EMac won't boot into OS 9

I have the retail version of of OS 9.2.1 which I was able to install and then update to 9.2.2 It runs classic fine, but when I try to boot to os 9 it boots and then the screen goes black. I started it with extensions off and narrowed it down to the nvidia drivers and have tried replacing/updating/bribing etc. But I get the same result. I then wiped the hard drive clean and tried an install disc from a Powermac G4. It installed OS 9 just fine but then it had no audio through the speakers or earphone jack. I tried the control panel and it seems to think the speakers are working fine. I booted into OS X and sound work under classic. I don't have the original install disc, and am at a loss as to what to do. If anyone has any help they can offer, it would be much appreciated.

According to apple-history.com, the minimum OS for the 700MHz eMac is OS9.2.2.
This will put it in a similar vein to my MDD, that in theory you need the original install disc to get OS9.2.2 installed.
Note that it may not just be OS9.2.1 + OS9.2.2 Update. There are more than a few special video / audio / hardware drivers that were needed for the eMac. I checked many years ago for my MDD, there were about a dozen control panels / extensions in the MDD install version of OS9.2.2 that had later versions than an OS9.2.1 + OS 9.2.2 Update installation.
This is no comfort to you, but with an OS9.2.1 + OS9.2.2 update installation you might get most things working, at least until you can source a replacement set of discs.
There have been posts here that suggested the MDD could boot from and install an OS9 system from the true retail OS9.2.1 disc (white background, gold 9), but then that installed OS was not bootable. You would need to find a way to install the OS9.2.2 update. Sounds like you've managed all of this, but ended up with no video.
Best consolation I can see is that OSX will be pretty decent on a 700MHz G4.

Yosemite install won't boot into any mode

Really sorry if this has been covered before but I spent a good time searching and couldn't find any existing posts with symptoms to the same extent.
I've got a 2008 iMac 27" and have the latest version of Yosemite installed (10.10.1 I guess). I upgraded to Yosemite probably 2-3 weeks ago and everything has been fine. Then yesterday when I woke it up from sleep it effectively froze - no mouse or keyboard input. So I did a reset by holding down the power button, and when I turned it back on it went to the apple logo boot screen with a progress bar that gets to just below 50% and stuck there. I've restarted quite a few times and left it running up to six hours and still it doesn't boot.
Now this is similar to the issue here - OSX Yosemite won't boot after install on mid 2010 iMac - except I am unable to boot into any mode, and the only startup keys accepted are the P-RAM reset. It won't boot into recovery mode (command+R), safe mode (Shift), startup drive select mode (Option), diagnostics mode (D)... nothing
I've booked into a Genius Bar appointment when the Apple stores reopen after Christmas, but I'm hoping that is a last resort and to be honest I'm unsure what they can do for me except to say it's a lost cause.
Are there any suggestions on what could be happening and why it's ignoring the startup modes? I would have suggested the keyboard not being recognised except the P-RAM command works perfectly, so it's obviously seeing it. I'm a little scared that because it won't let me into a boot device menu (which must operate independent of any HDD) then there's an issue ahead of that in the boot sequence, so possibly the motherboard is shot...
Sorry if I seem a little desperate. I had a HDD crash two years ago to the day (great Christmas present Apple) and it kind of puts a dampener on things.

Factory fresh Thinkpad T440 won't boot into preinstalled Win8

As the title already tells,
my company orderd new Thinkpads with preinstalled Win 8.
So I packed one out and pressed the power on/off button but the Thinkpad won't boot into Win8. Right now it hangs in the screen where I can choose from which option I'd like to boot (network, SSD etc.)
So I decided to take another one but it has the same problem.
I have no clue what I can do about this problem.
Has anyone a suggestion for me what I can do now ?

Check if the HDD is detecting in the BIOS.
If yes, then perform “System Restore” to reinstall the Operating System.
If it is not showing in BIOS, try reseating the drive.

I've have run Disk Utility. After Verifying the disk it said it needed Repairing - so tried doing that and got the message " Error: Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files" I have got Time Machine but haven't backed-up since Dec 12...Can I use "Restore" to copy the MBP HD to an external HD and then re-install Lion?

2Ghz Macbook won't boot into OS

I've had it (white 2GHz MB) for a month, and wasn't expecting something like this to happen so soon, if at all. I've had other problems with my PC laptops, but nothing this..weird and unexpected. I got a Mac just so I wouldn't get such weird and wonderful problems such as this.
I was just browsing on the net, nothing special, I bookmarked a page in Firefox, and then the screen comes up telling me to shut down and restart. Did that, had the apple logo come up, think for a few seconds, then the restart screen came up again.
Ever since then, when I try to turn it on, something (I'm assuming it's the hard drive) whirs up for a second, the apple logo comes up and the intro sound goes, and then it shuts down. Then it repeats this process, with the HD whirring up, intro sound going, apple logo appearing, then shutting down. The first time through this, the white indicator light turns on, but after the first shutdown, it stays off. I can stop it from cycling through this by holding the power down until it shuts down, but that's the only way that seems to affect it. Trying to turn it on again only makes it go through this again.
I'm planning on bringing it into the store when I can, but I live several hours away from the nearest. I guess I could send it in too, but I don't want to be without my laptop for a month or more if it's something that would just require the right input of keys or something simple.
Help would be greatly appreciated.
2GHz Macbook Mac OS X (10.4.6) won't boot into OS, weird problem

I've now tried inserting the install disk, but what I had assumed was the HD seems to be the disk drive instead, because now it seems that it is pushing the disk out, not allowing it in.
The only added RAM was instore when I got it, upgraded to 1 gig. No recent applications that I can remember. I don't think I did anything different with it at least for quite a few hours.
I don't know what a bad battery would have to do with it, it was fully charged, and does the same thing when the AC isn't plugged in.
I've been very happy with the laptop and Macs in general until now. Everything's run beautifully, I haven't been getting discolouration or anything, there's a bit of a whine but it's quieter overall than any computer I've had before. It's just a really, really odd problem (that seems to be isolated, from what I've seen looking around). Unfortunately, this problem is making it totally unusable for the moment.

EMac won't boot of restore CD

I have an eMac running Panther that won't boot up (I don't remember what os version number).
Recently I bought my Mac a new ultra thin keyboard. This keyboard requires a new driver to run the Mac specific function keys. I downloaded the driver, installed it and it didn't work, so following these instructions: (http://www.tuaw.com/2007/08/26/fix-those-aluminium-keyboard-woes/) I tried reinstalling... with woeful results. My eMac will no longer go past the grey apple screen with the spinning wheel. Sometimes (not always) it ends up on the grey no entry sign.
I have tried to reboot off the eMac Install and Restore disk (no.1). It doesn't work, just ejects the disk and carries on (so I cannot run "archive and install"). I have tried booting holding down "C", ALT, CMD-OPT-SFT-DEL and have even tried to boot off my disks for earlier OSX versions (10.2 and 10.0.4). No luck with anything.
I was able to make the Hardware Test run but it found no errors.
I have reset PRAM and I still couldn't boot of the restore disk. I tried booting with CMD-V, both before and after resetting PRAM. Previously I got about 15 lines of text and then the machine stuck on "still waiting for root device". After resetting PRAM I get about 200 lines, but all saying "can't determine" or "couldn't alloc" or "can't generate" or "can't find" or "cannot resolve" or "did not complete" up until it gets to "IP Firewall loaded" at which point it freezes.
So I have run out of ideas... can anyone suggest what I can try next, or how I can finally get my eMac restore disk to boot up?
(I also tried to save my files by connecting my MacBook and using Target Disk Mode... but although I was able to connect ok, all the folders I need to copy have a 'access denied' icon next to them... so I couldn't get that to work either... very frustrating!)

That you can boot off the Apple Hardware Test CD tells us the optical drive is OK. You have the original OS X discs that came with the eMac, which certainly should be able to boot the machine. The most obvious explanation for being able to boot from the AHT disc but not the OS X Install disc would be if the OS X Install disc is defective. Do you recall if you ever booted from the bundled OS X Install disc before? Does the disc show any smudges or scratches when viewed at an angle under a strong light? A more certain test would be to put the eMac OS X Install disc into the MacBook to see if the MacBook can recognize and read the disc.
If the eMac's OS X Install disc does appear defective, there are a couple of things to try. First is physically cleaning the disc; you can rub it with a soft lint-free cloth using distilled water (look in the auto section of grocery or drug stores) --- distilled avoids any trace chemicals or sediments in tap water --- or using the cleaning solution and mechanical disc spinner from any commercial CD lens/disc cleaning kit (I've used Phillips brand cleaning kits for some time). That should work well for smudges or any buildup of grime on the disc. If using a commercial CD lens/disc cleaning kit, use the lens cleaner for a pass or two in the eMac, just to improve the signal-to-noise ratio when trying to read th OS X Install disc.
If cleaning the disc doesn't help, you can try a couple of things. A phone call to eventually reach a live operator at the Apple Store or AppleCare will let you ask the person on the other end to check if there are any bundles disc sets available for your specific eMac model (you'll want to have the info in eMac: How to locate the serial number and identify your model handy). Such disc sets are sometimes unofficially available long after the Mac model with which they shipped goes off the sales catalog, and are available for a fairly modest charge.
Otherwise, you'd want to find another set of OS X Install discs that will work with your specific eMac model and let you do an Archive and Install to preserve your mail and other user data in place (which is easier than copying all user data to the MacBook, doing an erase & install on the eMac, and then dragging your data back from the MacBook). Finding an eMac-specific (gray label) set of discs on someplace like eBay would be least expensive but most time-consuming, and you'd need to make sure you get the right model eMac discs. It would be more certain of the results to get a retail (black label) OS X Install disc. Panther 10.3 of the same or higher dot version number as the eMac shipped with will work. It may or may not work to use a non-eMac model specific gray label Panther OS X Install disc if you afterwards use the Mac OS X Combo Update 10.3.9 on the eMac.
It might be easiest to just get the retail Tiger OS X 10.4 discs (still available by calling the Apple Store last time I'd heard), especially if you qualify for the educational or federal government/contractor purchasing discount. Upgrading to Leopard may also be an option with your eMac, but Tiger is fully mature and has lesser CPU and memory demands than Leopard. If you do go for the retail OS X disc route, be sure to run Disk Utility > Repair Disk from the Installer's menu --- Disk Utility in Tiger 10.4.2 and later is significantly more capable than DU in earlier versions.
And, come to think of it, upgrading to 10.4 would also eliminate the conflict with the keyboard function keys software that started all this in the second place (first place being the spilled chocolate milk on the original keyboard; just be grateful it wasn't small inquisitive peanut butter and jelly smeared hands trying to insert a CD into the optical drive).
Good luck! This is certainly an aggravating experience to go through for what should've been a two minute job of swapping keyboards! (If it helps any, from experience I can tell you that before you know it, instead of worrying about your children with computers, you'll be worrying about them with cars.)

EMac won't boot up

I have an eMac, OS 10.4, that won't boot up. It's stuck with logo of Apple and little spinning gear below. I tried booting up from System CD holding down C key, but after 1st disk I get a message that says there was an error and to try again. I try again and get same message. I'm thinking it may work if choose the option of erasing entire hard drive and starting over again. However, I'm reluctant to do this because my children have valuable pics on the HD. Any ideas?

When does the error message come up when you try to boot from your OS X 10.4 Install DVD? "After the first disk" suggests you may have the 10.4 Media Exchange set of CDs; if you can boot from the first one, go to the Installer menu and select Disk Utility to run Repair Disk on the internal HD.
If you still cannot boot from the OS X Install disc, try booting into single-user mode and running the file system check utility.
Repeat Repair Disk or fsck until it reports no problems.

Won't boot into safe mode

My 2012 iMac 27" was randomly rebooting itself, while in Sleep. I assumed this was due to the cheap 32 GB memory I bought, but before I could change it back to the original memory, to test, the Mac booted into Safe Mode (I assume - a progress bar showing at the bottom of the boot screen, below the Apple logo), and did not get further than a half the way, and then shut down. I swapped the memory to the original 8GB. I tried booting again, no buttons held down, as then it wouldn't get further than a quarter of the way. Further attempts to boot do not work, even when holding down Option to choose the boot disk, pressing Shift for Safe Mode, or Option-S for Single User Mode. I assume it's trying to boot in Safe Mode, but failing?
I also tried using a good Mac with the bad Mac as the Target Disk boot mode - the good Mac does not see the bad Mac...
I have an external DVD drive, but that isn't an option as I can't go into boot drive select mode. What are my options, apart from sending the iMac back?

Booting into the Recovery HD should allow you to effect repairs - that's the point of it, so it's a bit concerning that it won't allow you to. The Recovery HD is a partition on the internal drive that should allow you to effect repairs to the Macintosh HD, albeit part of the same physical disk.
I'm no expert, but I'd be concerned that the hard disk is on the way out. Do you have backup of everything - Time Machine or a bootable clone, perhaps?
Maybe have another try with Command+r. If it fails I'm not sure what would be the best next step - it depends if you have a full and up-to-date backup of your disk so that you can restore.
One of the options of the Recovery HD is to allow you to re-install the OS, which won't delete your data.
The more extreme step would be Internet Recovery which would involve erasing everything and re-installing via the internet.

Disk Warrior from Alsoft (not cheap) is another possibility for recovering damaged disks, although it's not a guaranteed solution.

HELP, K8N won't boot into bios or anything. need to reset board to default

I got playing with the MB and tried HT 5x, it immediately shutoff and now won't let me into bios to reset it, so i'm waiting to hear from MSI. I tried clearing CMOS and everything, the damn thing boots on for 5 seconds and goes off. Screen stays black. Has to be turned on from PSU as power button at front won't do it.
CPU: AMD64 3200+ (230FSBx11 = 2.5Ghz)

MEM: OCZ 3700 Gold Dual Channel (2x256 in slots 1 & 2)

Its not heat related as I've been able to run lots of tests and my case is open right now. It just won't boot at all, black screen and shuts itself off. All I need to do is get into bios to change HT back to 4x, but I can't. Any ideas to reset to default?

I tried having it unplugged for over 8hours while i was at work, tried taking the battery out, tried taking both memory out. It starts up (screen stays off) and then shuts itself off after 5 seconds still. I turn the power off, then back on at the PSU (the power button at the front won't turn it on or off) then it starts all over again.
My ABIT IC7 would reset to default it turned off and on 3 times in a row...why dosen't this board have something like that. arg. So anyone know how I can get this damn board to allow me into bios?

EMac won't boot to hard drive - Flashing Folder at Startup

I did have this eMac working with this Hard Drive months ago. Now I just get the Folder with the Flashing icon at Startup. So I installed OSX Tiger on a Firewire External Drive & it Works perfectly running from the FW HD. The Internal Hard Drive then shows up on Desktop. I run Disc Permissions & Verifications on the Internal Drive & everything comes up Perfect. It just won't Boot to the Internal Hard Drive. I even used Super Duper to make a Clone of the Firewire Hard Drive that is running, but Still I get the Flashing Folder with The Finder Face, when I unplug the Firewire Drive & attempt to boot from Internal HD. Any clue? Thank you in advance.

I run Disc Permissions & Verifications on the Internal Drive
Run Repair Disk on the eMacs internal disk.
If it passes then open the System preferences > Startup Disk and select the eMac's disk.

IBook won't boot into OS X

I was using my iBook the other day when the screen unexpectedly went gray, it then went into standby shortly afterwards and would not power up. A three-fingered and power-switch salute later, and I was back at the login screen, but it would not boot into my admin account on OS X after that -- just a blue screen (sometimes with the background image preserved).
A visitor account on the same machine boots fine.
I have been over the disk with DiskWarrior, repaired permissions and the drive with Disk Utility, reset the login plists (under single user command line startup) and done the other relevant tasks for 10.4.4 as detailed in

are no use because even when booting into safe mode, the OS won't start.
There are no accessories plugged in, no external drives, USB devices (inc keys) or networks wired or wireless. No software has been added in recent days other than a recent minor upgrade of the Apple Backup software that was released the other day. No new firmware is required.
The machine was working just fine and went on the fritz with no warning. It was sitting quietly for a few minutes having received no recent input from me or any outside source that could have precipitated the meltdown.
AFAIK I have exhausted the Apple knowledgebase on this and similar issues. I can find no other resources or clues on the net to fix the problem.
Anyone have any clues as to what the cause and, most importantly, solution is?

Sounds like the OS is starting just fine. Your login account, however, has some problems. I'm assuming you aren't using an encrypted home directory, so it is probably something simple like a corrupted preferences file for Finder or Dock or something.
When you are logged in as an ordinary user, navigate into the Admin user's home directory if you can. Go into the Library folder, then drag the Preferences folder out of the Library folder into the home directory. It should ask you to authenticate because you don't have permission to do that. Enter your Admin username and password.
Once the directory is moved, log out of the guest user and log back in as the admin user. You should be able to log in successfully. At that point, if you'd like, you can move individual preferences files from the old preferences folder into the newly-created Preferences folder (in Library).

Os 9.1 install on g4 10.4.9 won't boot into classic

I'm trying to install os9 onto the same partition as 10.4.9. I boot onto the os9 install disk, it installs just fine, will open in os9 just fine, but won't boot up in classic under 10.4. (sorry for the run on sentence)
I can get to the OS9 screen and then it stops before loading any extensions. I tried launching without extensions and that doesn't work either. I tried to update to 9.2.1 and it fails saaying there is a problem. I have done several clean installs of OS( but to no avail. Can you not install in reverse order? I was given this mac with 10.4 loaded so I don't have original disks for that. I hate to send it back to 10.3.9, I have those disks. Anyone have a suggestion? We still have a lot of OS9 programs we use and can't afford most of the upgrades to work strictly on 10. Thanks

I grabbed a system folder from another system with
10.4 and 9.2.2 and this boots up just fine.
Sorry, bad terminology. The osx machine will now start up Classic with out a hitch (no problems). i haven't tried to boot into os9 yet. I could never get the International Install to ever work as Classic.
As did your old OS 9 installation, as did OS X. It
was starting Classic within OS X (which is not
"booting") that didn't work. Does it work now?
Is there anything in the international edition that
won't allow this to work?
It may be that you'd need to have OS X set to use
International English in order for it to cooperate
with an International English version of OS 9, but
I'm not sure about this.
I did notice a BTree error in os9, but disk utility
said it was fixed. Not. Kept me from upgrading the
9.1 to 9.2.2.
Does this refer to the old OS 9 installation, and is
this problem now gone?
I haven't looked to see if the BTree problem still exists. I'm guessing it's not there since Classic started just fine.
It also told me to do a clean install. It was a
clean install. Says it can't modify the system folder
on this mac.
When you perform a proper Clean Install of OS 9, the
installer renames the existing System Folder
"Previous System Folder" and unblesses it. These are
the only changes made to the old System Folder — but
if it has been selected for use by OS X to provide
the Classic environment, it can't be renamed.
That prohibition (which is imposed by OS X) may
flummox the old OS 9 installer, which was written
before there was any such prohibition and before
there was any OS X.
So with the OS 9.2.2 that you copied from another
Mac, are you able to run Classic again? The downside
of copying OS 9 from another machine is that if you
ever want to boot (start up the computer from a cold
shutdown) into OS 9, or restart into OS 9 instead of
OS X, it may not work. Unless specific steps are
taken during the installation of OS 9 (from a retail
disc only) to perform a universal installation
(which will start and operate any Mac that can run
that version of OS 9), every OS 9 installation is
tailored to the hardware of the machine on which it's
installed, or for which the model-specific installer
disc was designed. That generally means that if the
System Folder is copied to a machine with different
hardware, it will be problematical — failing to boot
at all, failing to run reliably, or lacking drivers
for hardware components in the machine to which it's
been copied. If you aren't able to boot into the
newly-copied OS 9.2.2 even though it functions as
Classic, this is probably why.
See above for most of these answers. I've been running Macs since the MAC PLUS and have done many clean installs since. This problem just had me stumped compared to all the other problems I've encountered over the years with many different Macs. I'm not a PC guy or Unix guy so the newer OS X stuff is still a learning curve for me. Was my question answered - not really (but international version OS 9 vs non international OS X may truly be the answer). Is the problem resolved? I think so. Thanks for all the suggestions.

G5 won't boot into Leopard

Hello everyone,
I've got a weird issue with my PowerMac G5 and Leopard. My 11 year old was experimenting with the GUI, and it's possible that he ended up interfering with the online OS update, or something along these lines (I wasn't there to see what he did). Or maybe it's a totally different issue. Right now the G5 won't boot. When powered on, it chimes, displays the large brown-ish apple, and stops dead in its tracks. I've tried unplugging it for 5 minutes, pushing the PMU reset button, resetting PRAM, but haven't made much progress. Same result when trying to boot off OS X DVD. When it was working, I noticed that it was having trouble keeping time, I thought the CMOS battery may need replacing soon. Can a dead battery be causing this issue, even after all the resets? When the apple is displayed, does it mean it tried booting the OS and failed, or did it not even get that far? I don't hear any sounds coming from the hard disk. Another oddity: about a minute after it's been powered on with the apple still up on the screen, it starts to sound like a jet engine spooling up. It's a gradual increase in fan RPM (power supply fans also) to the point that it becomes VERY loud and sounds like it's about to blow up. What's going on here?

I have more info... I was able to get the G5 into the boot device selection screen; when I tell it to boot off the hard disk, I hear the hard disk chirp, the G5 throws up the apple screen, and everything goes dead.
I also booted into the OpenFirmware (as suggested in another forum), and ran the reset-nvram command, followed by reset-all. Now when it boots into the device selection screen, I don't see the DVD at all anymore!

Canvio 500GB drive won't boot into system recovery

First a little background:
Computer is a Dell desktop PC running Windows XP SP3.
Portable 500GB USB drive is a Canvio model HDTC605XK3A1.
"NTI Backup Now EZ" has been used to do a weekly backup for almost a year.
The PC recently started running very slow so I decide to restore a full system backup from two months prior. To do a system restore you have to boot from the Canvio drive into Linux and do a full system restore.
Everything started fine but during the restore the process crashed. Now the PC won't boot on it's own drive or the Canvio. I then plug the Canvio drive into my laptop and the drive is not recognized. I manage to repair the partition table and the drive is now recognized but will not boot. I get a message stating "BOOTMGR is missing".
I can retrieve all the photos and documents from the drive, but there is genealogy software on the computer and the data files only get saved to the drive image files. You can not retrieve individual files from the drive image. You have to do a full system restore using NTI Backup.
The big question is how do I make the Canvio bootable again? Or, is there an ISO available to burn to a CD?

I managed to get the drive to boot by using Grub4DOS. Most of the incremental images seemed to be corrupt, so I had to go back almost a year.

Firewire card installation failed, now won't boot into os x

G4 gigabit dual 450 was working fine except firewire port wasn't so I installed a firewire port card. On reboot i got/get a nice startup tone but the screen stops on the grey on grey apple image... with the grey bar circle spinning, and won't move into os x. I tried the button switch (PMU? counted to 12) by the internal battery, but no change. HELP, please...

I installed YellowDog Linux last week. I deleted the installation, personal reasons, and tried to install this week.
Guess what happened? All three firewire ports are not working.
When trying to install YDL, the installation tries to load the ohci1394 driver and abends, dumps, throws and exception, whatever.
In addition, none of the 4 daisy chained firewire drives appear on the desktop. None of the additional 3 daisy chained firewire drives appear on the desktop. The firewire camera does not appear on the desktop.
So I broke the chain into a 15 feet chains, and distributed the chains over 2 external firewire ports. Four devices are on one chain, and two devices are on the other chain. The other firewire device was moved to the 12 port usb hub (this device switches b/w usb/firewire). The camera is off the chain entirely.
The following are the installed extensions on my mac:
IOFireWireAVC.kext
IOFireWireFamily.kext
IOFireWireIP.kext
IOFireWireSBP2.kext
IOFireWireSerialBusProtocolTransport.kext

pull the plug on all devices and power mac; waited an entire day to replug
reset-all = in open firmware
reset parameter ram
broke up the chain of firewire devices to 15 feet each, on each port
blew any dust particles from the firewire ports
lastly, reset PMU
the battery is problably less than 2 years old (my mac is 10 to 12 years old; it is my personal computer)
None of the above fixes restored my firewire ports. Therefore, I purchased a firewire card. All firewire devices appear within the finder.app.
I am not able to install YDL. YDL allows me to perform a multiple boot:
Linux
MacOSX
MacOS
OpenFirmWare
CD
NetWork
(for security reasons i do not perform all of these boots)
When YDL attempts to load the ohci1394 driver, it fails. I removed the new firewire card, now I am back to circle one.
I will now try the following solutions:
combo update
repair permissions
If this does not work, I will reseat my fireWire card and not install YDL.
