EMac won't recognize SuperDrive after Safari 3.2.1 Update

Hello, I have the original 700MHz eMac and I had updated Safari to 3.2.1. When I had restarted, Safari quit itself after 2-5 mins. Then my SuperDrive (HD-DVD-RW+-RDL/CD-RW) had all of the sudden, disappeared. I tried restarting and it still didn't show up in System Profiler, Menu Bar's Eject menu, Disk Utility, and when I put a disk in there (Manually), nothing, tried downgrading Safari, nothing, I tried Zapping the PRAM, still nothing, tried safe boot, nope, tried with the disk still in there, booting with C key, Option Key, mouse button, nope...then hmmm...There was this folder that appeared out of nowhere, named "501.249789158" with 8 items in it. Don't know where it came from, where it goes, what its for, or what it does. It just got there. Whats worse is that the drive works in other machines (PC) and this is my only Macintosh. So Windows Machines don't read Mac OS X Tiger Boot Disks (10.4.6). I'm extremely frustrated Any help anyone?
Matt Knice

Hello,
I fixed it!!!!!!! Yes! Ok. Well I don't have an earthly clue to what the folder did, or where it went or came from, but the SuperDrive (TSST Corp HD-DVD-RW+-RDL/CD-RW) was not the Apple Shipped Drive. So I put the original Apple Shipped Drive (Pioneer DVD/CD-RW) ComboDrive back in there and it actually came up! So then I got my Mac OS X 10.4.6 Tiger (Retail) Install/Restore DVD and put it in there so fast that I put it in upsidedown and was scared that it wouldn't work when I saw that it never mounted on the desktop. So then I ejected the ComboDrive, and saw that it was upsidedown, and said F**k I'm an idiot!, and put it back in there (once more) and it mounted and so I did a clean install with the ComboDrive, then when it finished, I put the SuperDrive back in and it was actually recognized! Then I did another Clean install so that it saw that it was the main optical drive, and it too, worked!!!
Well, Thanks for your help guys. I appreciated it. Alot!!!
Cheers!
Your fellow eMac User,
Matthew Knice

I'm using OS Extended 10.9.5.  I don't know what the original version of iPhoto was.

Have you run the iPhoto Library Upgrader? You need to direct it to the location of your old iPhoto Library by clicking the "Choose Library" button in the lower right corner of the panel you are seeing when the upgrade starts.

  • Itunes won't recognize iPod after installing MediaMonkey..

    Hi,
I recently switched from Itunes to MediaMonkey, and I'm very happy. But my girlfriend still uses iTunes. And now her iTunes won't recognize neither her or my iPod when I connect either of them. Windows and MediaMonkey recognizes them perfectly. iTunes just comes up with this error message:
"The software necessary to communicate with iPod isn't correctly installed. Install iTunes again before installing iPod-software."
I've tried uninstalling and re-installing iTunes a number of times. I even tried uninstalled MediaMonkey, but nothing works..
PLEASE HELP ME, I'M GOING INSANE HERE =(

Have you tried working through the steps in this article, in the order listed?

  • WoW won't recognize keys after update

I just installed 10.5.6, and now WoW won't recognize ' as a usable key in the game. So if I want to use it to make the character auto-run, it won't do anything. I can still assign the key to something, but the game itself won't register its use. Works on my MacBook which I haven't upgraded yet, doesn't on my iMac.
Anything which might screw with this in the update?

Hi, I have a similar, though not exactly the same issue, I'm using the DVORAK keyboard layout.
I had my "wasd" keys mapped to their DVORAK alternatives ",aoe" respectively. They no longer work and if I try and remap them in the "Key Bindings" interface, they strangely come out as "wasd".
Also if I want to open chat in game, I have to type the '/' key, which is under normal circumstances my 'z' key. Once in-chat it's fine and I can type using DVORAK again.
This is ever since the upgrade to 10.5.6. It might as well be a WoW issue, not a OSX issue.
I'm not the only one with this problem - see my post on the WoW-forums:

  • Computer won't recognize Nano after downloading updated ITunes

I updated ITunes and my Video IPod works fine, but my husband's IPod Nano (1st G) now does not exist as far as my computer is concerned. The Nano works fine and charges when I hook it up to the computer through its USB cord, but my computer won't recognize it. Could this be a problem with the new ITunes update?

I posted this elsewhere, but perhaps it fits best here....
I am having this same issue, except in my house, we have 2 nanos- 1 is recognized and 1 is not. Hopefully someone can figure out what's going on.
(both nanos in my house are less than 4 months old)

  • ITunes not running after Safari and Quick Time update

HELP NEEDED!!After updating to the latest version of Safari and Quick Time, i got this error message the next time I started my computer:
"AppSyncNotifier.exe: The program can't start because CoreCoundation.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."
I tried to open iTunes but I can't. I tried to uninstall so I can reinstall but it I got another error message that said I do not have the rights to uninstall, etc. I am the only user of this computer and I have admin rights. This PC used to run on vista but I recently upgraded to Windows 7(x64) and I encoutered the same problem - i could not uninstall/reinstall iTunes because "I do not have permission"
After upgrading to Windows 7 iTunes was running okay until the Safari and Quick Time update.

PLEASE HELP!!! PLEASE, PLEASE, OH PLEASE!!!!

What a strange collation of errors. Taken at face value, each of the three suggests a different problem. Working on an Occam's razor sort of principle, that one underlying problem is going to be more likely than a perfect storm of three different problems at once, I think we'd better try checking on troubles with administrative privileges first.
Let's try doing a "run as administrator" on an iTunes uninstall first.
Download and save a fresh copy of the itunes installer to your desktop.
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Now right-click on the iTunes64Setup.exe file you downloaded and select "Run as administrator".
Since you've already got that version of iTunes installed, you should eventually get to a dialog asking you to repair or remove iTunes. Select Remove.
Does that go through without the "Windows Installer" message?
If so, reboot the PC and then try another "Run as administrator" of your iTunes64Setup.exe. Does Apple Application Support get installed for you properly this time?
Thanks again b noir. Unfortunately, this suggestion did not work. When I did what you said, there was no option to "remove". I see the iTunes thing on my control panel-programs window, but it's no longer in the program (x86) folder on the c:/drive. iTunes on my computer is like gum stuck to my shoe. same goes for bonjour. Please be patient some more. Do you have any more suggestions?? I'm planning to get me an iPad but if I can't get iTunes to run properly on my computer I'm having second thoughts about it now.
    Thanks!

  • Windows 7 won't recognize my iPhone now that I've updated to iOS 7.1

What's up here?  I use a Windows 7 machine and used to just plug my iPhone in and get all the photos and video off of it via "my computer".  Now my desktop won't recognize my iPhone and the phone keeps asking me to trust the computer which I've said "yes" about six times now.  I don't use iTunes and don't want to as it doesn't work well with Windows.  None of this happened until I updated to iOS 7.1 and hey apple, give us an option to roll back please!!

That's what's throwing me.  I don't use iTunes and don't even have it installed.  I just plug the phone in via a USB cable, or did anyway before iOS 7.1 and it worked fine.  I manually pulled my photos and videos off to my hard drive.  Now I'm trying to download iTunes and it just keeps saying "thanks for downloading iTunes" yet it hasn't even begun to download.  All my own fault.  I didn't listen to myself "if it ain't broke don't fix it" i.e. don't always rush to update to the lastest iOS.  Heck I still use Windows XP on my desktop and have for 13 years.  It works fine and I see no need to change it.

  • OS X slow, laggy after Safari 4.0.5 update

Short: My late 2007 MBP has been working flawless until safari 4.0.5 update.
    After, OS X is laggy...
After the update everything seemed fine, but after i've been working for a while, OS X acts laggy.
Applications and such, opens fast, but doing any graphic intensive like, moving windows, open dashboard (not really graphic intensive but...), playing the game Braid, or any Open GL game for that matter is pure torture.
The funny thing is if i change my display resolution from 1440x900 to 1280x800, then back again, everything is back to snappy old OS X that i'm used to for a minute or two, then the laggyness is back again.
This all started after Safari 4.0.5, i've never experienced this before.
I've tried to run a few system maintenance tools like onyx without any success to my problem.
    I reinstalled OS X 10.6.2 update - no luck
I Reinstalled my whole system from scratch. Worked fine until.... Safari 4.0.5
Anyone else having the same problem?
My MacMini's working fine, same goes for my buddys MBP unibody first model.

you didn't import your old prefs and bookmarks back?
When Safari launches, it caches your bookmarks and writes them into a new folder. And that lets Spotlight start indexing.
Maybe you have something connected to your system that is causing problems, interference, or router (see notes, Apple mentions a fix for Linksys, why? and are there other router-related issues?)
At least a clean install (I would have done so on a spare hard drive) rules out any 3rd party extensions, plug-ins, and such, yes? Any update to a browser tends to work best if the old cache and sometimes prefs are removed and create a new profile.
I still think a good clone that you can boot from beats a fresh install from scratch any day of the week.
Maybe zero or 7-way write erase the entire drive at some time (best done before using), though even that isn't a guarantee to find, let alone map out, weak sectors. And no, it isn't done automatically by itself or something.
With only one post (now two) it is always hard to know the level of troubleshooting expertise. Restoring from, and having backup clones, should be a standard practice.

Give me an uninstall programs feature, please! Create a restore point; and, rollback driver updates, and make this a modern OS. Or maybe 10.6.2 isn't ready for prime time. It is sluggish on my quad-core Mac unlike any prior version that ran on it (10.4.6 thru 10.5.8). Maybe it didn't get enough testing, or it was but works best on future update to the system.
I've seen users with trouble with Safari that: can't be duplicated, couldn't be resolved, both Mac and Windows versions. But my bet is something is left out, not mentioned.

  • Help! Superdrive won't recognize ANYTHING after a forced shutdown!?

I was watching a dvd, and it froze up about 25 minutes in and the little rainbow wheel was up for about 10 minutes and I was in full screen so I couldnt do anything. So, I held in the button and forced it to shut off (with the dvd in). Now after that I started it back up only to find it wouldnt recognize the dvd, and just spat it back out after about 5 seconds or so (I couldn't hear it reading anything at all). I tried multiple times, 2 other dvds and a burnt music cd, it won't read anything anymore...and I just burned a cd earlier today and everything was working fine and I also had to put other cd's in that worked fine prior to this shutdown....Can someone please help?? Is there a disk reset or anything??? Any help is greatly appreciated! I also restarted and tried, shutdown and let it sit for the night and still nothing....please help!

That doesnt work I verified and repaired permissions via disk utility, but that did absolutely nothing. It is still taking in the disk, and I can hear a faint beep about 2 times and it spits this disk out after about 5 seconds. I cannot put anything in the drive, it just spits it out after a couple seconds. Everthing worked fine before this one thing happened....Is there anything I can do?

  • Won't eject DVD, won't recognize Superdrive

My son's iBook G4 is refusing to eject a movie DVD from its Superdrive; it has played this DVD repeatedly without problems before. There doesn't seem to be a manual eject hole. Things I've tried that haven't worked: eject button (in normal operation, after sleep, or after loging out); rebooting holding the eject button; rebooting holding the mouse button; iTunes eject; command-shift-1; running "eject cd" from Open Firmware (it responds "can't open the eject device"); running drutil tray eject from Terminal. When I put an eject icon on the menu bar, it reads, "no drives." DVD Player won't run, and reports, "There was an initialization eror. A valid DVD drive could not be found." The System Profiler doesn't list the DVD drive. Neither does Disk Utility. When I run disktool -l, or df, or druttil list (from Terminal), none reports that the DVD drive exists.
    Any advice? Thanks very much.

Turns out the Superdrive was dead. Ah, well.

  • Emac won't recognize external hard drive

Had a problem with my emac freezing. After running apple hardware test and repairing disk permissions without any changes I decided to backup eveything and reinstall OSX. Although this solved the problem, I cannot get the emac to recognize the 160GB lacie external hard drive where all the backup files are stored. Any suggestions?

External hard drive spontaneously unmounted? Try these tips:
NEW FIRMWARE: Try updating your external hard drive's firmware, which is available from your drive manufacturers Web site--or just use VersionTracker's (www.versiontracker.com) search function to find it. Be sure to back up your data before applying the update, and carefully follow the manufacturers instructions.
OUT OF iSIGHT: If you're using an iSight camera while you're using a FireWire drive, the camera may be interfering with the drive's ability to stay mounted. Try temporarily disconnecting your iSight and moving it to a separate FireWire port. If you have multiple FireWire devices, try using a FireWire hub.
POWER PROBLEM: A faulty power adapter could be causing your drive to unmount. Your drive may not be getting enough juice to stay on, causing the drive to turn off and thereby unmounting it from your Mac. Alternately, the power adapter may not be providing a steady amount of power, causing your drive to turn on and off. Try replacing the adapter. If you can't get a replacement adapter from the hard drive manufacturer, try your local electronics store. Just make sure the adapter you choose has the same connector and input/output voltage. you can find the input/output voltage on the adapter itself.
    Cheers!

  • ITunes won't recognize IPHONE after new computer loaded from TM...

    Hey all:
I had an unfortunate meltdown of my reliable 5 year old macbook and the logic board fried; luckily I was able to save the HD and when I bought my new macbook pro (wow, what an upgrade) and loaded it from the drive via 'transfer' on initialization, my ITUNES could no longer recognize either my IPHONE or my IPAD; I can still see the backups in the preference pane, but have been unable to have ITUNES acknowledge their presence. Any idea? Thanks
    Ger

Additional details. I plugged in my phone, it was recognized and syncing as expected, but was stuck. After about 30 minutes I stopped the sych. That is when my problems occurred a few days ago. I have rebooted, re-installed, followed the directions on apple support - including the 6 step uninstall and the stuff following msconfig.

  • Disk Utility won't Recognize HD after DiskWarrior Freeze

    Hello,
Thanks for reading ... all advice and help is much appreciated.
My Powerbook (G4 1.67 15" - OSX 10.4.11) experienced a system freeze. After a forced shut down and reboot all I was getting was the grey apple screen, but no loading wheel. I tried booting in Safe Mode, didn't work. Using Apple Hardware Test I found an "Invalid Memory Access" error. I've experience this before and DiskWarrior had helped in the past (this may have been the wrong choice this time). I know my memory wasn't the issue (tested in a different machine).
I used DiskWarrior (v4.0) to rebuild the HD (again...likely the mistake). After getting hundreds of errors, the rebuild froze (for hours) and was stuck on the spinning ball. After a forced shut down, start up led to a flashing globe and an unknown volume icon.
When I boot from my OSX install disk and choose Disk Utility my HD is not listed (just my cd/dvd drive is listed). My HD isn't listed in Startup Disk either.
Have I permanently corrupted/damaged my HD volume? Any advice on how to proceed?
Thank you very much for your time and help. I really appreciate it.

I'm gonna take a stab in the dark and say your install disc is dirty. Give it wipe over to remove any fingerprints and try again. if you can't get the install disc to recognize your hard drive your hard drive may have failed, which would explain the other events you mentioned. Try cleaning the disc, insert it, shutdown the computer by holding down the power button, then restart while holding down the 'C' key. Then, try to repair the disc via the disc utility on the install disc. If the disc still can't find the hard drive then, unfortunately, it's new drive time.
As for the corruption: I fear an OS reinstall will be your only savior.

  • JavaScript won't recognize applet after using HTML Converter (please help)

    Hello friends,
I used JavaScript to call a public method from my swing applet, which returned a string. It functioned correctly until I used the HTML Converter (a utility available from this web site, which converts the <applet> tag into <object>). Now it doesn't recognize the applet.
    Here's the JavaSript code:
    function getText(field) {
    field.value = Editor.getText(); // worked fine before converting
// "Editor" is the name of the applet, used in the applet/object tags
    Here's the applet method:
    public String getText() {
    return "whatever";
Now JavaScript sends an error "'Editor' is undefined"
Any tips will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Yes, the applet loads. Here's the address: (the applet is not finished, but it functions correctly)
http://www.lordofthewebs.com/test/test1.asp - before using the converter
http://www.lordofthewebs.com/test/test2.asp - after using the converter
The "getText()" menthod works in IE 6.0, doesn't work in netscape (I haven't gotten to this issue yet).
