EMac won't start

My eMac won't start. Yes, I've checked to be sure it's plugged in.
Should I slap it? I've never struck any of my other children.

hi there. i would reset the pmu inside the emac. instructions should be in user manual. it is a silver button located beside the battery. make sure computer is completely off and unplug peripherals and the power cord from the back of the machine where it enters the power supply. you will have to lay the computer on something soft on its face and then take off back access panel. then you will have to ground yourself on some metal and then press the button counting "one one thousand" and let go. do not press it twice. it often will get a computer going again.[:)]

  • EMac won't start from optical drive

For no apparent reason, my eMac stopped recognizing the ethernet connection. So, after reading about this problem on the forums, I tried two suggestions: resetting the NVRAM and zapping the PRAM. This fixed the ethernet problem.
But, I now have a new problem. The eMac won't start up from the optical drive [hold C key during startup nor choosing disc in startup control]. The startup routine gets to the pale gray apple, but the little rotating spokes do not appear. Instead the gray apple seems to jump about a quarter inch to the right and it seems like a square image tries to appear. The routine freezes at this point and and the optical drive spins down. I have to unplug the eMac, and then restart from power button. At this point it starts up fine from the internal drive.
I tried zapping the PRAM again. I also removed the battery. There is no accessible PMU/CUDA button that I can find. At this point, I've run out of ideas.

    Thanks for the further suggestions.
I tried the fsck and it reported no problems. I had my doubts that this was a source because the problem of not booting from superdrive came AFTER the NVRAM reset, which is fundamentally a hardware modification. I boot periodically from Panther install disc 1 to do a repair disc and permissions routine. When I couldn't do this after the NVRAM reset, I could only conclude that this tweek had some direct effect on the Mac's firmware-based start-up routines.
There is nothing physically wrong with the install discs, they work perfectly in my other emac as well as my two G4 towers. So, I'm still at a loss as to what to do next. I can't reload the OS. And, I can do any hardware diagnostics. So I guess it's a decision of whether or not to spend the big $$ for Apple repair. These are classroom macs, and we have no tech support or $$.

  • 2004 eMac won't start in 10.3.9, is there a way to get 10.5 onto it from DL DVD-R?

    Hi folks.
I'm trying to set up this ancient eMac for my mom. It had been running 10.3 or something, but I seem tyo recall it being wierd in that I couldn't get Safari (of all things) to run on it. So the other day, I put it in target disk mode and used a firewire cable and an old iBook to erase the HD and reinstall 10.3 onto it, as well as run the 10.3.9 updater.
It won't start up. It stalls at the apple logo.
So I figured that since it's RAM is maxed I'd put 10.5 onto it. I OWN 10.5 but I cannot for the life of me find it. My only copy of 10.5 is a DVD-R I bought on Craigslist from a guy who represented it as a genuine retail copy (I disputed the transaction through Paypal and was baffled that they decided in his favor). Anyway, this eMac cannot read DL DVDs. I have an external optical drive that can, but the eMac will not start up from it.
I tried to install it from my macbook pro with the emac in target disk mode but the installer won't let me because it assumes the volume 10.5 is going onto is attached to an intel processor.
I know there's some trick. Can anyone help?
    Thanks!

I cannot find the eMac install disk, and I haven't been able to get it to start up from my 10.3 CDRm (holding down option or c), though I read something somewhere about these not being able to start up from system folders earlier than those they shipped with. I've dealt with this sort of thing several times before, and it always seemed to work to simply use target disk mode.
It definitely won't start up fromt the 10.5 DVD-R, and I'm pretty sure I tried putting the MBP into TM to use its optical drive as well, but it didn't work. But it's worth trying again, and I appreciate your input greatly.

  • EMac won't start; 'bong,' pause, 'click,' and dead

My eMac (Tiger installed) won't start up.  It makes the intial 'bong' sound and after a few seconds, there is a click and nothing else happens.  The screen remains black, no question mark, nothing.  It acted up previously in that, when the space bar was pressed to wake from sleep, it would shut down.  It always started up after that, though, until the final time it shut down and we went on vacation for a couple of weeks.  When we returned, it would no longer start.
One of my biggest objectives is retrieving certain files on the eMac.  I have an old blueberry iMac and an external hard drive, the original eMac disks, the Tiger disks and Tech Tool Deluxe.  Any suggestions?

USB 2.0 eMacs had a known hardware fault that is, today, essential fatal due to the expiration of an Apple program to fix it at no cost. The cost of repair without the program is equal to the value of a half-dozen used eMacs assuming a tech can find the parts. So we should decide up front if your eMac is among the affected models.
First use this article to locate your serial number and model variant:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2395
then use the serial number to find your eMac variant in the chart in that article. The hardware fault ONLY affects those with the variant name "eMac (USB 2.0)"
If yours is a "USB 2.0" please see if the serial number falls in these ranges:
    G8412xxxxxx- G8520xxxxxx
    YM412xxxxxx - YM520xxxxxx
    VM440xxxxxx - VM516xxxxxx
If it does, consider Roam's advice to pull the HD and not worry about breaking something. The rest of the computer may have some resellable parts but the logic board cannot be economically repaired today.

  • EMac won't start, help please

I am having two problems with my eMac. The first, much more pressing, problem is that it won't start. I was having problems installing the newest version of quicktime, so on the quicktime forums I read to Repair Permissions in the Disk Utility, so I did this, and everything seemed to go well, but when I restarted my computer, it would not load. It is stuck on a light grey screen with a dark grey apple logo in the middle. My keyboard won't repond to the point where i can't even open the disk drive. My second, much less urgent problem is that my disk drive doesn't recoginize any cd's, even ones that I have used with this computer before. this problem really means nothing at this point, since my computer won't start anyways.
If anyone could help me, it would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I tied all of the suggestions for my problem.
You see a blank, gray screen
    1. Make sure the latest firmware for your computer is installed. Check Apple Downloads for the latest versions. (Yes, it is installed)
    2. Disconnect all peripheral devices, except for the Apple keyboard and mouse. This includes ADB, serial, USB, FireWire, SCSI, and PCMCIA devices. If this resolves the issue, connect one device at a time, restarting after each one, until you've determined which device is causing the issue. (All are disconnected)
    3. Remove third-party hardware upgrades such as memory (RAM), microprocessor upgrade cards, and PCI cards. If this resolves the issue, add back one item at a time, restarting after each one, to isolate the issue. Note: Apple does not provide technical support for Mac OS X when used with third-party microprocessor upgrade cards. (Don't even have any third-party hardware upgrades)
    4. Start up from your Mac OS X installation disc and check the hard disk with Disk Utility or, if necessary, fsck. (CD-drive will not even open, so can't do this)
    5. If you are comfortable doing so, reset your computer's Power Management Unit. Specific directions are available elsewhere in the Knowledge Base. (Can't find how to do this on the anywhere)
    6. Additional tips may be available in this document. (Document also had nothing that worker)
I will be buying a macbook regardless after my income tax comes in, so I don't deem the computer as worthy of spending any money to fix, but this was a pretty expensive machine to just discard, so I would like to try to get it running again.

  • Did latest security update, now emac won't start

Hello, please help. I'm only have one mac, so I'm desperate. I have an emac running os 10.4. I just performed the latest security update (and itunes and quicktime) now the mac won't start. I get to the apple logo and the spinning/loading icon and it stays there forever. I started from my original disc and did a disc utility check, and everything is allright with the hard drive. It was working perfectly until I installed the update and did the required restart!

Hi OneDayMatt, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    I agree, but 3 points...
#1, When was the last time you saw truth in advertising?
#2, I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.
#3, Being in the Right in an accident may not be all you can do to save your behind!

  • My emac won't start up

my emac wont start up it goes to the grey screen with the apple but there is no spinning gear i have 10.3.9 installed and i can get it to go to the firmware screen by holding in the power button but i have no idea what to type in there to make it load if i type mac boot it does nothing but sit there with the grey screen and white apple...can anyone help me to get my puter back up and running?

How much free space was there on the hard drive when the Mac was last used? Had it given any warnings about the hard drive being full?
Begin by unplugging all peripherals other than the Apple USB keyboard and mouse. Continue with the step-by-step suggestions in Your Mac won't start up in Mac OS X. If you have your OS X Install disc at hand, you can boot from that disc and run Disk Utility from the Installer Menu, selecting Repair Disk on the internal hard drive. Minus the OS X install disk, you can as advised use the Unix file system check utility fsck. Both are described by FSCK.
You maight also try to Start Up in Safe Mode. Hold the Shift key down until the grey screen / Apple logo appears, then go read a magazine or something --- it can take upwards of 20 minutes for Safe Mode to finish running a faceless variant of Repair Disk in the background. That time was for a 40 GB HD with about 26 GB on it; if you have a larger drive, it could take even longer.

  • [solved] emacs won't start

I'm interested in learning some lisp and it seems like emacs+slime is the way to go (even though I perfer vim).
Seems like there is something weird with my configuration somewhere, because it won't run.
    $>emacs
    emacs: Invalid visual specification `DirectColor'
    $>
I'm not entirely sure what to change, I tried adding "Emacs.visualClass: TrueColor" to /etc/X11/app-defaults/Emacs but it doesn't seem to do anything.
Edit: meh. Forgot that you have to reload the .Xdefaults

I did search. Ok, I suck at choosing the best search terms. I searched again, as you advised, and the answer in this thread https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=89043 did the trick. Apologies for not finding the obvious. And, as always, thanks for the assistance.

  • EMac won't start after replacing RAM

    I bought a 512mb ram to install it, so it'll be 768mb.
I stupidly took out the original RAM first before installing both RAM. The ejector tab just wouldnt fit in snugly to the side of the ram.
After starting up the emac, i get a "toot" sound and two flashes, the flashes repeats after a few seconds.
I'm not sure whether it's because the RAM did't fit in properly or whether i fried something.
    I appreciate any help.
Sorry if my english sounds weird, it's not my first language.

In addition to roam's usual excellent advice, make sure you have the right RAM for your model eMac. You can use eMac: How to locate the serial number and identify your model to check the model, use Crucial to check the required RAM specs, and eMac - Do-It-Yourself to review the installation steps (the movie links usually seem ike overkill but could be handy here).
You can also refer to Power On Self-Test Beep Definition.

  • EMac won't start from startup install disk

    Aloha gang,
Our school purchased 25+ seats volume license of 10.4 last year and to date I have used 15. Most upgrades have gone on without a hitch but today I'm trying to upgrade some eMacs (same models as I have previously upgraded without problem) and it will not start up from the disk no matter what I try. I've tried:
    * putting in the disk, clicking on install, clicking on restart so it restarts from the install disk
    * putting in the disk, starting the computer and holding the C button
    * putting in the disk, starting the computer and holding the option button to choose the install disk
None of those have worked. All that happens is the grey screen with the darker grey apple and the spinning thingy beneath it. I thought it might be that I was being impatient so I started it again, went to eat lunch and when I returned it was exactly where I left it. Any suggestions?
Oh yeah - I have tried using the original purchased media as well as backup copies of the media in all instances.
Thanks for any help you can give, gang!

    nalani:
Thank you for indulging my ignorance and so graciously enlightening me as to your situation.
It seems to me that the difficulty you are experiencing has to do with individual computers not responding appropriately to the discs from which you are trying to boot them. The disks themselves may not be the issue at all, since you have previously booted other computers from them.
My first suggestion would be to check the computers themselves to see if they have issues that need to be corrected. If those computers are running previous versions of OS X and you have the install disks for them, see if you can boot from them and run Repair Disk. I would also check for hardware issues by running the appropriate Apple Hardware Test disk. BDAqua's suggestion to Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck is appropriate, especially if you are unable to boot from an install disk to run Repair Disk.
BDAqua's other suggestion also has merit. That is, using one of the computers that will boot the disk as Host, boot the recalcitrant computers into Firewire Target Disk Mode and run Repair Disk and if everything checks out OK, do the installation in that way.
No one is questioning the legality of what you are doing. It is just that most of the users who post have a single user or family license at best, so your licensing situation is a bit rare around here.
Please do post back with an update of how things go if you attempt any of the suggested approaches.
    Good luck.

  • Emac won't start up and tech tool doesn't recognize my hard drive.

My emac's been running slow and crashing. Today it got to the point where I couldn't even use the finder when I started up. I tried to start up from tech tool and did so successfully. It recognized my hard drive and I ran the tests and repairs, but during one of the tests it got hung up. I restarted the computer and now all I get when I start up is a little folder in the middle of the screen with a question mark. I started back up from the tech tool cd, but it doesn't recognize my hard drive anymore. I'm really scared I've lost everything. I could sure use some help! The emac is running Tiger.
    Jane

    jamech,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
What version of Tech Tool where you using? If it was an older version, incompatible with OS X 10.4 Tiger, that could actualy make things worse --- see Only use Mac OS X 10.4-compatible disk utilities with Mac OS X 10.4 volumes.
The version of Disk Utility that ships with OS X 10.4.2 and higher is more capable than earlier versions. Try booting from the Tiger install disc, then open Disk Utility from the Installer menu and see if you can run Repair Disk on the hard drive. Refer to Using Disk Utility and fsck. Take note of any errors reported and post back with the results. If errors are reported repaired, re-run Repair Disk until you either get a clean bill of health or a report of unrepairable errors.
When you get the Mac running from the hard drive again, you'll need to determine why it was running slowly in the first place. Anything reported by Repair Disk is of interest here. You could try using a third-party utility such as OnyX to clear caches and logs, and to make sure the maintenance scripts are current (there's a timer in Tiger than will force the scripts to run if you normally have the Mac shut down or in system sleep overnight; the timer is based on elasped time and isn't exact).

  • EMac won't start up, only gets to "Starting Network File System"

Would appreciate any help. I'm a novice. Have a 4-year-old eMac that offered updates for Quicktime and iTunes. I let it go ahead. Got to a point where it said to close iTunes before continuing update. I did close iTunes and OK'd to continue update. Right away the monitor became shaded it and said to restart. Now when I turn it off and try to restart, it makes the start-up sound and the circle clicks around and then suddenly stops. Then the blue line fills in until it gets to "Starting Network File System" and then becomes shaded again saying to restart. I did some research and tried holding down the option key while powering on. Now I have a Macintosh HD icon with a blue X, as well as a 3/4 circle w/arrow and a straight line arrow. Any help would be very, very much appreciated. Thank you. kcorbett

    bjadk,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
If Apple Hardware test is reporting RAM memory errors, no amount of reinstalling, or Disk Warrior, or anything else, will help. The install and repair attempts, sabotaged by bad RAM, would actually corrupt the hard drive worse on each attempt.
Do you recall how much RAM was in the eMac? Did you get RAM size reports from AHT? Check the RAM slots on the eMac by opening the access door on the bottom (see eMac - Do-It-Yourself). If there are two DIMMS, pull the one in DIMM slot 1 (that'll be the one on the top if I recall correctly). Removing the bad RAM may leave you with too little RAM to actually run the eMac; you can check your eMac model and use that info to order good RAM from Crucial.
Yet another potential problem comes to mind. If the Mac is three years old and hasn't been used much, has it been largely turned off and either unplugged, or plugged into a surge protector that was itself turned off? It the Mac hasn't been able to draw a trickle current while nominally turned off, the PRAM battery could be drained, which can also interfere with starting up and using the computer. You can use a voltmeter to check the battery while in the battery holder and replace it if it's more than 0.1v below the nominal 3.6v value.
When AHT gives the RAM a clean bill, use your OS X Install disc to boot the computer and again try Repair Disk and/or use single-use rmode to run fsck (per Using Disk Utility and fsck). IF Repair Disk/fsck report making repairs, repeat that step until it either reports no problems found or unable to repair, since one directory error can mask other errors. As already mentioned, DiskWarrior has an excellent track record of making repairs where Disk Utility could not.
If Disk Utility or Disk Warrior repair the disk, you can proceed to an Archive and Install (you'll need 5 GB or so free space on the hard drive to do an A&I; if space is tight, use the Installer options to select language support for only the language(s) you actually use).
If no utility can repair the disk, an Erase & Install with the one-pass write zeros option selected could recover use of the drive, by forcing the drive to update it's record of bad disk sectors to avoid. This would lose any data and programs for which you don't have a backup or install discs, through.

  • EMac won't start and 3 beep sound and light flash

My eMac suddenly got problem these days.
Last night, eMac can boot and login. Suddenly, the monitor cant display property. Then, i enforced to power off. Later, trying restart it. eMac cannot start up and breeze 3 beep sound and flash power light.
I checked support forum. It claimed that "3 beep - no good banks". Actually, i dont understand what it is. What i can i do??

    KY18,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The three beeps mentioned in Power On Self-Test Beep Definition means that during the startup test of RAM, the Mac detected that there are DIMMs physically in one or both sockets, but that neither DIMM is functioning electrically.
It's unlikely but possible that one RAM DIMM may have suddenly failed catastropicaly, far more unlikey if you have two DIMMs installed. A more plausible scenario, considering your mention of display problems, would be if the eMac were plugged directly into a wall outlet, or into a low-cost surge protector whose MOV hardware had degraded and failed (the status LEDs on low-end surge protectors are essentially worthless). If there was a power surge while you were using the computer, that could have blown out the RAM (and potentially damaged other hardware as well). Surch brownouts or surges are usually evident in the effect on room lights, clocks, and other elctronic devices plugged into the power outlets.
As a longshot, you can try pulling the RAM DIMMs and then reseating them in the slots, making certain that the thumb clips holding the DIMMs have snapped fully into place after reseating them. Check the RAM installation instructions at eMac - Do-It-Yourself.

  • EMac won't start - clicks, fan turns on briefly

Got a used eMac 800Mhz G4 from my neighbor which is going to be my daughter's first machine. Worked fine at first, but needed a PRAM battery replacement to hold the time. Then a few days later, flickered and turned itself off after 5 minutes of being on. Now, pushing the power button results in a few muffled clicks and the cooling fan turning on briefly.
Any thoughts out there? Is the power supply history?

    steergear,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Was the replacement PRAM battery itself fresh and fully charged?
In this case, it may help to carefully reset PMU by firmly pressing the PMU reset button next to the battery holder once for about one second. See step 6 of eMac: How to Replace the Backup Battery (800 MHz and up ATI graphics model eMacs have the PMU reset button on the opposite side of the battery holder than the 700 & 800 MHz nVidia graphics models).

  • Safari won't start on eMac

I have an eMac running 10.4.11 with Safari 3.1.2 on it. Problem is that ever since Safari upgraded to version 3, I have not been able to run it. When I launch it, the icon bounces a few times and then I get an error that the application crashed and an offer to report to Apple.
Firefox works fine, but I want to run Safari for my kids with the parental controls.
I have deleted the pref files, deleted all the accounts other than the main account, repaired permissions, updated Safari, reset the firmware, and tapped my toes, but nothing has worked. I suspect it has to do with a plug-in or add-on for Safari that may no longer be compatible. I searched my applications folder but don't recognize anything that may be offending. I would reset Safari, but since it won't start, I can't do that.
    Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!
