Emacs erc and freenode

is anyone having problems connecting to freenode with erc in emacs? i get a 'no route to host' error... connecting to undernet is not a problem so it doesn't seem to be an internet connectivity problem.
i've tried on ports 6665, 6666, 6667, 6668

i'm using irc.freenode.net
today i managed to log on... must be some sort of bug in my connection or something...

  • Printer Sharing with eMac, iMac, and iBook not working

Hello, everyone. I hope you guys can help me out with this:
I have an Epson Stylus CX4600 hooked up to my eMac via USB. My eMac prints fine with it. The eMac is getting its internet via an Ethernet wire going downstairs into my Linksys Router, which sends my Shaw internet to my iBook, my iMac, and my eMac.
I want to allow the iMac and iBook to access the printer over the network directly, so I can just print from those computers and have it come out the eMac printer.
I've looked at many articles on this. So far I've installed the drivers on all computers, plus they can all network to each other over File Sharing, so they are connected.
But I haven't been able to print yet. The most I've been able to do is get the files I try to print from the iBook and iMac to show up on the eMac, in its printer queue. Only it didn't show up for a LONG time. And when it did, the jobs automatically stopped and everytime I clicked start, it would automatically switch back to stopped again. The files would not print.
At this point, I want to get the iBook connected to it first. If I can do that, I'll try the iMac. But the iBook is first priority. I've tried making it connect to the Printer using IPP (IP Printing), and the result was... what I explained in the above paragraph. I also tried just ordinary Printer Sharing, but it said something close to this:
"Unable to locate eMac.local, Unknown host."
That hardly makes sense, because at that time I also tried getting the iBook connected to the eMac over File Sharing which worked. For some reason, the "eMac.local" and "iMac.local" files don't show up in my Network thing when I connect to them, or even when they're not connected. HOWEVER, I think they did at one point. I could swear I saw "eMac.local" and "iMac.local" in the Servers folder in the Network section of the iBook at one point. But it's no longer there.
Please help. I've described my problem as well as possible. What a long post. If there's any way to make my eMac, iMac, and iBook be able to print through my Epson Stylus CX4600 at any time directly, then I'll do it.
    Help!

Yes. I did say that my eMac, iMac, and iBook are all
connected to the internet and networked to each other
over the Linksys router. I believe the router is
still on factory settings because we never really
"set" or programmed anything with it.
Mac OS 9.2.2 on the iMac, Mac OS X 10.4.8 on the
    other two. IP addresses?
192.168.1.100 is what I would use to connect to the
    eMac from the other computers.
This is the eMac's IP, correct? Did you type it into Network, or was it assigned by the router's DHCP?
192.168.1.101 is what I would use to connect to the
    iBook from the other computers.
This is the iBook's IP, right? Again, fixed or DHCP?
192.168.1.102 is what I would use to connect to the
    iMac from the other computers.
    Same for this IP.
The iBook, as I've said, is wired. No wireless
    connections to speak of.
Okay. Now, if the router is handing out IP addresses via DHCP, what range was it configured for? My Linksys, for example, is configured to hand out IPs in the range 192.168.0.10 to 192.168.0.254. It has the IP 192.168.0.1, so the IPs 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.9 are available for me to hand out as fixed IPs. If I was to hand out 192.168.0.100 as a fixed IP, the router's DHCP server would have a potential problem, as it might hand out that address too, and only one device can have a particular IP address on a particular network. If your router is handing out 192.168.1.100, .101, and .102 via DHCP, you could and probably do have a conflict if you've got those addresses set up as fixed IPs. In particular, if you have anything else on the network, including Bonjour-enabled devices such as printers, you're likely to have a conflict.
Best way to resolve a conflict, if any:
1 set all the Macs to either DHCP, or if fixed IPs are required, to a fixed IP outside the range of the DHCP range on the router. (Or you could just turn off DHCP on the router.)
2 check the router to be sure that DHCP is set the way you want it, and the DHCP pool is what you think it is.
    3 shut down the Macs.
4 turn off the router, wait 30 seconds, turn it back on.
5 turn the Macs back on, one at a time.
On my Linksys, the way to set the DHCP pool is simple:
1 log into the router. (My router IP: 192.168.0.1. Yours would be 192.168.1.1.) Hit the 'Setup' tab. Verify the gateway IP. (Should be the router's IP. If it's not, something very strange is happening.) Verify the start of the DHCP pool. Verify that DHCP is on (or off, as you want). Verify the end of the DHCP pool. (My start is 192.168.0.10, and there are 245 IPs in the pool, so the end is 192.168.0.254. If I changed the number of IPs to 200, the end of the pool would be 192.168.0.209, and I'd be able to set the IPs 192.168.0.200 to 254 as fixed IPs if I wanted.) If your router allows for IPs to be reserved, you can set up reserved IPs for one or more of your Macs. (A reserved IP is an IP the router holds for a specific device. The network card in each computer has a specific MAC address; if that address is registered with the router, then every time that computer is turned on and connected it will get the IP that was reserved for it... so long as that IP is in the DHCP range and DHCP is turned on. Think of it as a fixed IP without your having to actually fix the IP.)

  • Emacs 24 and e17 incompatible?

I am trying to run light and fast, so am trying enlightenment 17, xfce4, openbox, etc.   I really like how e17 works.
However, when running emacs 24 and it's versions in aur) I have encountered some problems I do not really understand.   It seems that emacs just doesn't work right, has serious problems with the rendering?   I cannot put my finger on it, and I have never encountered such a thing in the last almost 20 years of using emacs.
Therefore, I am using xfce4 most of the time, and have not encountered any such problem in the last week.
Can anyone shed light on this problem?
    Alan D

Perhaps it's somehow due to emacs 24 using gtk3 by default. You can try recompiling it to use gtk2 to see if that helps.

  • Have an eMac, Powerbook and a macbook, how do I make it work?

    Hi
My eMac is running 10.4.11 so I can't subscribe to Netflix Canada with it. My macbook is running the same OS and I'm supposed to be able to subscribe but I don't know how to hook it up to my tv sets.
My Television sets are non hd - the old style with S video and RCA inputs.
So, if I got a Apple TV how would I hook it up to my tv sets and could I stream it through a Powerbook G4 or my macbook.
A little background is that my husband is very ill and is using my Powerbook bedside to watch movies. I just can't find or get out to get that many. I'm hoping to find a way I can stream Netflix to both our rooms through our computers.
Oh, my eMac is in the livingroom and I would like to know what I need to link it to a TV with S video or RCA.
Your help would be much appreciated

You need iTunes 10 to run AppleTV. You need minimum of OSX 10.5 to run iTunes 10.

  • I have a eMac PowerMac4 and use quarkXpress (v 5) and filmaker pro 6 (v 1) and will be purchasing a new iMac soon. Will I have problems using these programs?

I currently have an eMac and will be buying a new iMac soon and need to use the QuarkXpress (have v. 5) and FileMakerPro (have 6 v. 1) software for a current formatted newsletter I produce. While I can get the latest version of FileMaker pre-installed by Apple, Quark is no longer available at Apple. If I purchase QuarkXpress 8 (I have read there are problems with v. 9), will I be able to add my current files to the iMac and have everything work?  Thanks.

I found that the QuarkXPress (v. 5) has the ability to Export and Save As....
I tried save as, but didn't see any way to have it saved as anything other than the Quark.
I also have found this in a apple forum:
This solved my questionRe: Will Quark 7.5 work with the new Lion upgrade?
Aug 31, 2011 7:35 AM (in response to machttps)
Have just installed Lion and Quark 7.5 works well plus Adobe CS3 with the Java Run updates etc very pleased with the new Lion from Appple.
I don't understand how this poster could get Quark to work on Lion, I thought I read Quark requires rosetta to run it (or maybe the Fix for the end of August took care of that). However, this person had the 7.5 already, but I can only upgrade to a certain level while in Tiger, so this apparently is where the problem arises (?).
I also have come across a disc to update Quark to 5.01, but that's not much I suppose.
    Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

  • Online backup for eMac?  And what about Skype?

I recently had a bad crash. Had to do a clean install of OS X 10.4.11.  For some reason Carbonite won't serve the Mac community. . Anyone know of a good Mac alternative?  Also I lost Skype. Same question. What version of Skype will work with this old eMac?

    Hello, as far as Skype...
    http://mac.oldapps.com/skype.php?old_skype=32
And as far as online backup I really don't understand that wish, unless...
You have 20 MB/Sec Fiber Optic upload speed
You'r enot aware that a Firewire Drive will cost likely less than a couple of months of unlimited backup.
& there are free apps to backup or clone, which will leave you able to continue with your work within a minute or two...

  • New Apple user help re: emac g4 and OSX

I have always wanted and Apple Mac, but never had the time nor the money to consider until now. Well, at least I have the time - I purchased via ebay an emac G4 1.25MHz, 1Gig memory, 150 Gbyte hard drive, DVD combo etc. It came with OSX 10.5.8 installed along with ILife 08.
But no install or restore disks. I did not think that would be a problem until I started to browse this discussion group.
So - I can't afford retail version of OSX 10.5 and iworks/ilife (which I'd like).
My question is - can I install an earlier version of OSX - say 10.2 or 10.3, then buy the upgrade disks to 10.5 (which are much cheaper than the retail version)?

You don't need to erase the hard drive to instal a previous version of Mac OS X. Just do a clean instal/archive and instal.
Apple don't offer "upgrade" routes for the OS. You can upgrade for free via built in "Software Update" within the version you are running - ie 10.4 through to 10.4.11 - but there's no cheap option to go from 10.4 to 10.5.
At this point there is no real concern... only if you start to experience problems. (Sure, legally, you should have the disk, if you are using the software. In reality, people sell Macs with no disks, but software installed, and Apple are NOT going to come banging on your door like Microsoft because you're running their OS without the disk. There are no encryption keys for Mac OS. If Apple happily include their OS on all newly purchased Macs, it's hardly fair for them to say you can't use the OS on a 2nd hand machine.
That said - sure, if your system gets corrupted, you'll need an instal disk... as noted, you need a black labelled disk - UNIVERSAL INSTAL - or, an eMac 1.25GHz grey labelled disk. Thing is, from memory, the grey disks just say "eMac"... so if you buy one off eBay, it may not be the right one for your machine. So yes, a black label is best...
Because Leopard (10.5) is the last OS to run on these older PPC Macs, it still can be a bit pricey. But look on eBay etc and you may get a bargain.

  • How to Install emacs, openssh and start oracle database and get a connect?

As suggested by another poster, I installed the prebuilt appliance at [http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/community/developer-vm/index.html] and [http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/virtualbox/downloads/index.html] with the intent of running oracle database in a linux vm as a guest on windows 7 and connecting to it using JDBC from the windows host.
This is running but I don't know how to install other stuff. I tried "sudo yum install openssh" and "sudo yum install emacs" and "sudo service sshd status" and none of these worked (it could not find these packages). I could not get apt-get or app-get or aptget to work either. I was hoping that "uname -a" would tell me if this was fedora or debian or something else but no luck. What command do I use to learn the distro name?
How do I make ifconfig tell me what the ip address so I can use "scp" and "ssh" to get into the box? Ok, /sbin/ifconfig works and I see there is only a loopback address. Ack! How do I create a socket so I can ssh into this little beastie?
How do I disable the firewall or (better yet) punch holes in it so I get use JDBC and ssh, scp and samba from windows 7?
I tried firing up the SQL Developer 3.1 and getting a test connection with username and password of "oracle" with no luck. How do I get a test connection to work?
How do I determine if the database is running? If not, how do I start it and stop it and restart it?
    Thanks

There is no "oracle" account native to the database itself. This is just the default account that owns the application. Log on as oracle/oracle to the OS. (OEL) You can change the passwords of the sys and system account by setting your $ORACLE_HOME and $ORACLE_SID. Default SID is orcl on a database install. Also set a path to the oracle binaries in the form of $ORACLE_HOME/bin.
    Then sqlplus / as sysdba
Change passwords of sys and system using the following example.
    ALTER USER SYS IDENTIFIED BY [password];
    ALTER USER SYSTEM IDENTIFIED BY [password];
The supplied appliance runs oracle enterpirse linux. Not debain or fedora.
    Why do you need "emacs"?
I haven't personally load this appliance with Virtual Box but there has to be a readme file somewhere that details all the passwords and etc.

  • Emac beeping and not starting up

Hello everyone. I have an emac that is about 7 years old. Recently it began to have issues. They began with the computer not coming out of sleep mode and needing to be restarted. Shortly, when I restarted it, It would beep like a bomb was going to go off and then it gets a gray screen with a folder icon in the middle which changes between a smily face and a question mark. I've read through the other topics and I've checked the serial number. It's not within the danger zone there and I've also tried to start it in safe mode but that just changes the beeping a little bit.
My next idea is to change the battery and see if that helps. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance

I will have to look into getting a hard drive and doing it myself. I'm not scared!
Be aware that there are two variants of the eMac. Keep this in mind when looking for takeapart instructions. The later USB 2.0 eMacs have some case differences from the originals that are important to know. It's quite easy to trash the power switch when reassembling if you don't have the correct instruction sheet.
Also be aware that there is a group of eMacs with near-fatal logic board issues that may not work properly when you try ot boot from an install disk. This article has a list of serial number ranges that can be affected:
    http://www.apple.com/sg/support/emac/repairextensionprogram/
If your eMac falls in these SN ranges, the problem could be the logic board and not the hard drive. The program that fixed this issue free expired in June 2009 so you would have to pay for a repair. The cost to fix this (requires new logic board) greatly exceeds the value of any eMac on the used computer market.
So don't run out and buy a hard drive until you checked that range of serial numbers. If it falls in that range, we can suggest a way that might confirm the logic board issues (bad capacitors).

  • Old 700mhz eMac, airport and Windows

    Hi,
My mam has decided that she would like to get to know how to use my old eMac. I have installed it downstairs and she is getting on great.
However, the next step is to get it connected to the Internet. I want to get a wireless router and an airports, plus a couple of wireless cards for the remaining 2 PC's. My questions are as follows
Can I still get hold of an original airport? Can only seem to find airport extreme on the website?
Will this integrate OK with a standard wireless adsl router and windows network?
Need to get this sorted, cos my mam wants to start using email and chat so she can talk to her sisters more, and also wants to start using my old iPod! what have I started?

    Mark,
Re original Airport cards and alternatives, refer to Henry B., "eMac airport undead?" #8, 11:11pm Oct 18, 2005 CDT
Having set up both types of networks, I can confirm that setting up an Apple Airport Base Station is way easier than setting up a Windows one. The two will, however, play together nicely once everything is actually configured.
One thing to watch for: newer WiFi Access Point (WAP) (AKA base stations) offer more advanced encryption options then the WEP available in the original Airport hardware and software, such as the WPA standard. As far as I can tell, the Airport software available for th 700MHz eMac running 10.2.8 only supports WEP, so set the WAP accordingly. Be sure to note the WAP password in hex format as that's what you'll need to enter in the 'other' computers (whether the 'other' is the Mac or the PC). It'll be easier to set up a WAP firsr without any password just to make sure you can access the WiFi network, then add the security features such as passwords and hiding the WiFi network's name.
You can get a 802.11g WAP; that's backwards compatible with the slower 802.11b WiFi standard supported by the 700MHz eMac and original Airport card. Henry B.'s suggestion in the referenced thread of a wireless bridge could circumvent that bandwidth bottleneck. Note that in practice the greater bandwidth of 802.11g is only pertinent if you set up say a shared folder on a WinXP PC and share it witht he local network (including the Mac) and use it to share music or perform large local transfers --- the throughput bottleneck for Internet access is still mostly determined by the cable or DSL modem's bandwidth.
p.s., Hope you're ready for you mother discovering how to forward e-mail to you!

  • Transferring Files Directly Between G4 eMac (Tiger) and Intel iMac (SL) ?

I believe the answer is you can't, but I am just double-checking.
When I had a G3 iMac and a G4 eMac, each using Tiger, next to each other I could connect them via ethernet and transfer files across.
The purchase of an Intel iMac (in place of the G3) two years ago made this impossible.
    Has anything changed?
    Is it still impossible?
Currently I have to put files on an external Hard Drive or USB 2.0 Memory stick to move them from one computer to the other.
Needless to say, this is rather time-consuming and fiddly.
Incidentally, I am looking for a cheap (as in "free") solution, not one costing a small fortune.

Well, I would try the Internet Sharing method first. And if you run it from your Intel Mac (wireless, right?), you can share out your internet connection to the other Mac. What'll happen is, that will effectively turn your iMac into a router for the purposes of the eMac.
So, after connecting the cable, on the iMac, go to System Preferences - Sharing - Internet Sharing - and share the internet from your Airport connection to "computers using Ethernet". Click Start.
Now, on the eMac, go to System preferences - Network - Ethernet, and let us know what IP address you're getting. Hopefully it'll be something like 192.168.2.2. The iMac will be the router at 192.168.2.1 and you should be able to connect to that address using the Finder. Your iMac will still have its regular internet connection.

  • How can I use the "gcc compiler and emacs editor" in Solaris 8 for Intel?

I installed Solaris 8 for Intel to my desktop computer.
After the installation, I found I couldn't use the companion software (the software CD included in the Multilinugal Media Kit for Solaris 8) - especially the emacs editor and gcc compilers.
I certainly installed the companion software to my computer. And I can identify that those softwares are
really installed to my system. In order to check out whether I installed them or not, I went to the "System Administrator" and opened the "Solaris Product Registry", in which I identified that all the files in
the companion software were succesfully installed in my computer.
However, when I open terminal or console box and tries to use those
software, the system responds that "there is no emacs or gcc."
Why I cannot use those things?
Did I install the companion software wrong?
    I really don't understand why I can't use them.
For your reference, I saw the directories "/usr/bin" and "usr/ccs/bin"
    too.
    In /usr/bin I typed
    #as
    and no such command.
    In /usr/ccs/bin
    #as
    and also no such command
was what I had as a response.
If I installed the companion software CD correctly and if they are installed somewhere in my computer,
where I can find them and how I can use those softwares?
Lastly, whenever I try to connect to my ISP via telnet mode, I see this
    message.
    "Try to connect ...
connected to ***.***.***.*** (IP address of my ISP)
    Closed by foreign hosts."
Is there any one who knows why this happens?
    Thanks for reading my question.

gcc and emacs install in /opt/sfw. You should change your path statement to include /opt/sfw/bin and should obtain the FAQ from sunfreeware.com. The FAQ answers all your questions.
I have installed gcc and gtk and am using both at this time.

  • Networking Tigerized eMac 700 MHz and PM 7200 OS7.6.1 - need help!

    Hello,
I've looked on the boards and hit up Google but to no avail so I thought I'd try to ask in this forum for the help I need in sorting out my problem.
I have an eMac 700MHz, and am trying to connect my old (but functioning) PowerMac 7200. I want to back up a few bits of data and then format the HDD and reinstall an OS on it before selling/tossing it.
I tried to do this using an Ethernet cable. On the eMac in the Network view, I'd get a greyed out image of the PM, but it tells me that I can't get anywhere as there is an incompatibility in Apple Talk versions being used.
The PowerMac is old and only has 16MB of RAM. I'm not keen to buy a copy of OS8+ just to transfer less than a CD-R's worth of old mail and docs. Would that it had USB, I'd plug in a thumb drive or my iPod Shuffle.
The HDD is also pretty full - maybe 40MB of the 500MB is free. I tried to use a CD-R in the drive that I'd burnt on the eMac, but the PM wouldn't recognize it saying that the thing was unreadable. Have standards changed that much?
What's frustrating about this is I bought it second-hand from an Apple shop in '99, but they didn't give me any OS discs. Back then I was a tad more naive about computers and such. Now I wonder how they got away with it, and if any of the software I might have otherwise received could have helped me.
Any assistance that can be provided - any at all! - would be most welcome. I'm trying to tidy up the house here since a cohabiting family member has become unwell, and it'd free up space I could use for other things.
    Thanks in advance,
    Hoopy
    eMac 700MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   640MB RAM

No need to change the name of the OS 9 System Folder since the folder order list doesn't matter. It sounds as if you need to re-bless the OS 9 System Folder, per the instructions under No "blessed" Mac OS 9 System Folder in Classic doesn't start, Mac OS 9 not installed or recognized.
You may also find OS X: How to Perform Mac OS 9 Clean Install useful. Some posters have noted problems with natively booting OS 9 after upgrading to Tiger, although I had no problems a while back when I booted my office Quicksilver G4 in OS 9 to try to get HP all-in-one drivers installed for use in Classic.
Cavet: when the 700 MHz eMac shipped, it was formatted to be a dual boot machine. If at any time since then you reformatted the hard drive using the OS X Install disc, there's a gotcha: OS X does not by default include the OS 9 boot driver. That has to explicitly enabled. If the OS 9 drivers are missing, I'm not aware of any way to reinstall the OS 9 drivers without having to reformat the hard drive, although someone in the OS 9 or Classic forums may be better able to help.

  • Emac Display Expanding and Contracting

I have a first generation Emac that I just bought used. The screen is expanding and contracting (left - right). Any suggestions on what this is? Thanks.

You may have a defective IVAD cable, a relatively simple part to replace. Such problems plagued only the original nVidia-graphics powered eMac 700 and 800 MHz models.
The characteristic symptomatic indicator of such a defect, however, is most commonly video shrinkage vertically, with the image collapsing from a full to half screen.
