Email address replacing first name in To: field

Hi All,
We have noticed two different users have sent emails today to two different recipients where the first name is replaced by the email address, for example:
An email is written to John Doe whose address is [email protected]
The email is then sent with the TO: field displaying:
To: [email protected] Doe <[email protected]>
when it is supposed to display
To: John Doe <[email protected]>
Both users affected run different versions of OSX, one running Snow Leopard and the other running Mountain Lion. We have checked the Address Book and Previous Recipients lists for both users and neither show any contacts with odd display names.
We understand that two incidents isn't a big deal however we have noticed different mail clients will save contacts based on how they are displayed in the To: field and would like to prevent this from happening again. Thanks

This is less about MX records than it is your mail server configuration.
Quite simply, your mail server doesn't know that it's supposed to accept mail for johnbutzek.com, so when it sees such a message it assumes it's supposed to relay it to another server, or bounce it if the sender isn't authenticated/trusted.
Changing the MX may be valid, but it's not going to fix the problem. If the MX record points to this server all you'll get are 'MX points back to me' errors in the postfix log.
Instead, you need to tell postfix what domain(s) it is supposed to accept mail for. RIght now it sounds like you have it set for 'server.johnbutzek.com' and that's your problem. Change it to 'johnbutzek.com' and your problem should go away.

  • When emails arrive they arrive as email addresses and not names

When emails arrive they arrive as email addresses and not names from my contact list.
    What gives?
    Thanks

ok well I think I can confirm your theory by the fact that the few names that do show up are from PCs (where people's names are always entered in).
Generally, most people enter their name in the Name field for their email account settings with the email client used on their computer, but not always. This is entirely up to the sender and is not required.
90% of everyone else on my contact list is using mobile phones where names are not used like they are on PCs or smart phones.
The very same applies to the email client used on a cell phone. I can remove my first and last name from the Name field for my email account settings, or I can enter Allan or ALLAN only and if I use ALL CAPS for my first name or for my first and last name, the name I've entered in the Name field will appear in ALL CAPS when the email is received. If I remove my name from the name field, my email address will appear only with all sent messages.
This must mean that you too must have a lot of no name emails coming in right?
Nope, because the overwhelming majority of people that send me email have their name entered in the Name field for their email account settings with the email client used on their computer for accessing the account and with the email client on their smart phone.

  • How to find the email address by display name

    as title,
i can get the display name from the to, cc, bc edit box,
then i need to get the email address,
current i use object API to query: GWAccount->GWAddressBook->GWAddressBookEntrie->get_EmailAddress,get_DisplayName
but i find it is really slow when there are many contacts, example 10000.
so is there any other effective method to get the email address?

First off, you are not really doing:
    GWAccount->GWAddressBook->GWAddressBookEntrie->
    get_EmailAddress,get_DisplayName()
    are you?
If you enter the full line, it will read in all
of the entries each time it is called.
You should break each part into an object:
    gwAccount
    gwBook
    gwEntries
I'm not sure what you are doing.
Are you trying to compose an email?
If so, why are you not using Recipients.Resolve()?
Are you trying to get the recipients from an email?

  • HT201493 How do I change an email address to a name for friends I am following?

Does anyone know how I can update email addresses to actual names? I have deleted and reinstalled the app with no luck.

If you remeber the password to that Apple ID then follow these steps
1 - Make sure you have an email address that is NOT an Apple ID
    2 - Go to AppleID.Apple.com
3 - Where it reads Manage Apple ID - Sign in
Once you are signed in want to make sure the email address you are wanting to use is NOT set up as a "Recovery/Rescue" email for this account.
[To check this - Main page where you see Primary ID - below do you see the email address you want to use listed towards the bottom? Yes - Delete / No - Good ./. If made any adjustments "Save" Next on the left select "Password & Security" - Answer your security questions you set up "if you have any" then scroll towards the bottom and check to see if you see the email address you want to use. Yes - Delete / No - Good] <-> Also you can change your password on this page as well. Any adjustments made "Save"
Once this is done go back to the main page where you should read "Primary ID" and change the email address that is showing to the new email address youo want. "Save" Done
I learned this not to long ago and worked for me. Hope this helps you!

  • Why Address Book email addresses without first&last name stacked up under random names when moved to Lion?

Often in Snow Leopard I would add an email address to my address book wihtout filling in the name fields. For example, Iif I got an email from [email protected], I would "add to address book but never fill out the card completely with the first and last names. The card showed with just an email address. Just left it as the email address. I never had any problems doing this and it always showed up as a single email address on a single card. Oh woe is me! When I moved to Lion I now have multiple unrelated email addresses under some of these "email only" cards. These seem to be the folks who were cards as an email address w/o first and last name fields. Not only that, I have multiples of the "email only cards" and each one has a different set of mutliple "email only" addresses under it. But, at least one of the "email only cards" just has the desired email w no other info. Can I fix this other than manually?
I now have a disaster of an Address book.

ok, I've spent some time doing various scenarios.
I have managed to replicate one scenario which does as you say.
If my contact in the address book:
With name details as Peter Foo
    email address: [email protected]
where there is an inserted space before the name peter, of course this is not instantly noticeable, but it is as if you hit the space bar just before typing the email address.
Then when I use the Contacts Sidebar in a Write message, it will add the email address like this:
    Peter Foo <" peter"@somewhere.com>
    which of course in invalid.
but in the address book, if highlight the contact, in the section below the email address in blue -if I click this to send an email the email address is printed exacly with the space and it will send as if nothing is wrong.
So i'm asking you to check those email addresses which insert incorrectly via the Contacts sidebar. They only do this for me if there is a hidden inserted space at the start of the email address.

  • Can I address to the "Smith" family if I have a first name in the field

Hi I am trying to make some labels for christmas cards.
    If I have a file:
    first name: Peter
    last name: Smith
Can I address the label to say:
    The Smith Family?
    with address book?
    Thanks,
    Anne Z

I tried the Pearlabelizer. Despite it's obvious advancements on Address Book's printing to labels, it's got disadvantages too:
    Pro
Does print specifics of Address Book data to sheets of labels.
Does add to the labels globally.
Does insert specific text dynamically to imported/printed groups (SmartGroups or Groups) equally. An example 'The Family' + [last name] is a good one!
Does begin printing the first page in a specific spot/label, reusing a partial sheet.
Does format the font of label.
    Con
Does not import a group/smart group to a page (from Address Book 5.x in Snow Leopard).
Does not format an entire page at a time, rather each label one at a time, even if all labels selected.
Does not delete a single label shown on a page. Must start over 'New'.
While I like the app/utility/add-on to Addressbook, the limitations mean that I may not use it regularly. I'll let the author know about this in the hope he'll continue onward to a 1.0 release. It's at 0.6 now (and not ready for primetime). I'd say 3 1/2 stars...

  • Change an email address to a name in find my friends app

I have 7 entries on find my friends. All are the first names of my friends except for one. That one is an email address. I haven't been able to figure out how to change the entry to a name. Is there a way to do it? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Darlee
    iPhone 6 iOS 8.1.2

    Are you referring to iMessage?
If so - it is probably because that friend has enabled sending messages / starting conversations from their email
You can toggle that off or on from
Settings - Messages - Send and Receive

  • EWS Managed API: Email sender name incorrect if loading properties of multiple emails and several emails have same email address (but different names)

    Hi,
I have an issue using the Exchange Web Services Managed API. I'm essentially implementing an 'inbox', and am essentially using two calls:
folder.FindItems(filter, view) with the view set up with the 'idonly' property.
The returns a 'FindItemResults<>' object containing a set of items.
And then calling service.LoadPropertiesForItems(items, props), where the props contains all 'first class properties', which includes the sender details.
Now, the inbox contains several emails from the same email address but with different displaynames.
E.g. There may be one email from "Bob <[email protected]>" and another email from "Alice <[email protected]>" and another email from "Charlie <[email protected]>" etc.
The issue is that in the information that EWS returns from the call to LoadPropertiesForItems, every email ends up with the same sender name (from the first one in the list)!
i.e. When I enumerate through the returned items, the item.Sender.Name will always be"Bob" for every email where Sender.Address is [email protected]
I have debugged this with a http sniffer just to ensure that it really is the EWS coming back with this information rather than anything in the managed layer.
Is this a known issue? How can I work around this (without querying every single email for the sender name individually, as that would be too slow)?
    Thanks

    Hi Venkat,
    Thanks for the reply.
The scenario is that the client receives emails from a (3rd-party) automated system. The email address from this automated system is always "noreply@<blah.com>", while the display name is used to differentiate the actual sender.
I suspect that this kind of system will likely become more widely used, and so for us will increase in priority (obviously its a priority for our client already)!
Just for the record, if this is a known issue do you have a bug number or equivalent for it? (I tried to search but couldn't locate it).

  • Why can't I set up an apple ID alternate email using my first name and last name?

I am trying to set up an alternate address to my appleID using my first name and last name.  It keeps saying it is "rejected" but it gives me no reason.  I thought maybe someone was squatting on it, but when I try to send a note to it, it says that it isn't a valid address.  Does Apple prevent you from using an iCloud device with your name?  Seems odd since it allows other combinations of my name.

    Hello amg1957,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
If you're trying to add an alternate email address to your Apple ID account, the email needs to be an existing valid email address.  To configure an alternate email address with a valid existing email, please follow the directions below.
    Alternate email address
You can add one or more alternate email addresses for use with Apple services such as Game Center, FaceTime, Find My Friends, iMessage, and OS X notifications.
Go to My Apple ID (appleid.apple.com).
Select “Manage your Apple ID” and sign in.
    Add an alternate address:
Select Add Email Address, then enter your alternate address. Apple will send a verification email to that address. Didn't receive the email?
Follow the instructions in the email to verify the address.
    Edit an alternate address:
Select Edit next to the address, then enter the new address. Apple will send a verification email to that address. Didn't receive the email?
Follow the instructions in the email to verify the address.
Delete an alternate address: Select Delete next to the address.
Manage your Apple ID primary, rescue, alternate, and notification email addresses - Apple Support
    Take care,
    Alex H.

  • Associate email address with other name

  • Email address format group2%name@server.tld

    Morning.
A friend of mine has established an email distribution list on GMX. The address has the format:
    group2%[email protected]
Mail.app is not able send messages to this address. All other participitants of the list do not use Mail.app and have no trouble. But me, the only Mac user, can not send messages to group2%[email protected]
What's Mail.app doing? What must I do to communicate with this group by Mail.app?

    Hi,
Following is my understanding, please correct me if there is any misunderstanding.
We have a user Will Smith, and need it changed to
[email protected] via creating Email Address Policy.
If [email protected] has already existed in our org, it should be changed to
    [email protected] .
Based on my knowledge, we can use %xg Variable Paramenter to change to
    [email protected] .
However it cannot automatically change to
[email protected] if the [email protected] has already existed in our org. It means that the Email Address Policy has been changed.
To prevent duplicate addresses, we can apply some complex Email Address Policy, some like 3 letters of first name and 3 letters of last name via '%3s' and '%3g' Variable Parameters.
Maybe some scripts can achieve the goal. I suggest asking the Script Center for help, so that we can get more professional suggestions.

  • I plugged in my husbands iphone 4 into my laptop and synced it to my laptop and phone with my apple ID. Now his phone has my email address and my name and my contacts on it! big booboo  How can I change it all back to him!?

I plugged in my husbands iphone to my laptop and synced it to mine.  I used my own apple ID. Big mistake.  Now he has my name, email address, contacts etc on his phone and lost his... how do I correct this?

You'll have to set up his mail account again. To change the name, follow this article: iTunes: How to rename your device
After that right click on it in the device list and choose backup. A manual backup will be made, no sync process is included. When the backup is finished you should find it listed in iTunes/Edit/Preferences/Devices

  • Why can't I copy contacts' email address from their name card in lync 2010

so here is the issue I have, when I need to copy someone's email addresses or their phone numbers, normally I will find them on lync, move the cursor on them, and their name card will show up, then I move cursor to their email address or their phone numbers,
right click it, there will be an option to "copy", right? but sometimes, right clicking doesn't work. that copy option just won't pop up, this issue happens randomly, I need to restart lync, then it will work again. Also, there is one thing
that's weird, after I restart lync, whatever I have copied in the clipboard will disappear, like if I press ctrl+c to copy something from word, then this issue happened, I restart lync, I can copy information in lync name card again, but all that
content I copied does not exist in clipboard anymore, I press ctrl+v, there is nothing coming out.
this is not a big problem, but it's really annoying, does anyone know why this issue happen and how to permanently? I tried to reinstall, does not work.
this issues happens with both lync 2010 32 bit on 32 bit win7 and lync 2010 64 bit on win7 64 bit.

    Hi,
Please try to delete Lync user profile and information in registry.
The path of Lync user profile: <user profile>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Communicator\
The path of Lync information in registry: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Communicator\[email protected]
Please also make sure Lync client update to the latest version.

  • An incorrect email address I put in the BCC field has repeated itself infinitely and blocked outgoing messages. I can select but not delete the long list from the Warning. What can I do?

I put an incorrect email address in the BCC field of an email. A 'Warning' dropped down where the address was repeated until it fell off the bottom of the screen. No closure button at the top so I can't close it. I can select all the repeat addresses but can't delete them. I can't shut down or restart the computer because Mail can't close. Any ideas, please?

Aha! Pressed escape button and managed finally to close the Warning. Phew! I could then erase several hundred repeats of the mistaken address from the BCC field. Sorry to bother you all. Hellen.

  • Email address as screen name

I know it's not Adobe's or Jive's fault if someone uses his/her email address as a screen name to these forums, but in my ignorance I would think it should be very easy to prevent this from happening. As this suicidal practice seems to be becoming common amongst recent newcomers, couldn't something be done to prevent it?

OK, so if your current Apple ID using your AOL Username (like johndoe), then you need to log onto Manage your Apple ID and EDIT that AOL Username to a valid email address: Apple - My Apple ID
If you have an AOL email address (like [email protected]), and you are not using that as another Apple ID, you can change the AOL Username Apple ID to that. Otherwise, you can change it to any valid email address (which you will have to verify when you change to it).
Hope that clears it up. Post back if it doesn't!
    Cheers,
