Email addresses hijack?

Contacts in my Address Book have received spam email apparently from my btinternet.com email address which suggests that my Address Book has been hijacked, although I am careful not to open suspicious looking emails.
I have since deleted the server accounts in Thunderbird which I was using and have transferred to Mac Mail for all new emailing activity.
Is it possible that my computer is now infected in any way?
Is there any further action I should take?
Thanks

I have heard of this happening on windows systems, but not within OSX, although it's probably possible.
Just Googled your query, and came up with nothing directly related. One thread in these discussions mentioned a log entry that could suggest this, but apparently the log message is benign. See the following thread: http://discussions.info.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10154166

• My email address has changed on iphone, but the orignal old email address keeps popping up for password and I cannot reset it as my old email address was hijacked and closed. How can i use my current email address for all iphone functions?

I have iphone4s with the operating system of 8.1. I changed my email address which was used to register my iphone due to hijacking. I am able to read all my emails using the new address. However, I can not download apps as it keep asking me to provide the password for the original registered email address. I do not have the access to the email address, so I can not retreive the password. I want to clear this mess by resetting everything, and register my current email address as the only one to communicate on my iphone. Please teach me how?

settings - app/iTunes store - sign out and sign back in with your new id.
Note - if your older apps needs an update it will use your old apple id and password, as Apps are tied to the apple id that was used to purchase it.
You can't merge apple id.

• TS3988 I changed my Apple ID to my new email address successfully for the iTunes and App store but it won't work for iCloud and it won't recognize my password. I read that this can't be done. How am I supposed to get into iCloud?

I changed my Apple ID to my new email address successfully for the iTunes and App store but it won't work for iCloud and it won't recognize my password. I read that this can't be done. How am I supposed to get into iCloud? I plan on getting rid of my old email address which is my old Apple ID so how is that going to work?

Same question Wish someone had replied!
I changed my Apple ID to my new email and now cannot find any way to access icloud. Unfortunately I had allowed icloud to hijack my airbook files, so of course I am afraid I will lose them tomorrow when I exchange my iphone for a new one and cannot keep an icloud account i cannot access. What a poor sync system! Really atypical for apple!

• Firefox seems to be prompting me w/ potential email address when i have to put in one for a user name, i don't know how to delete those and stop it...thanks for the help

Every time a box pops up in any kind of site where I have to fill in a user name or password, Firefox tries to prompt me w/ old email address and emails. I don't want that to happen and don't want those email shown...how do I delete those and keep that from happening?

Hi Irene,
You should always pay attention when installing software because often, a software installer includes optional installs, such as this adware. Be very careful what you agree to install.
Adware gets on your computer after you have installed a freeware software (video recording/streaming, download-managers or PDF creators) that had bundled into their installation this browser hijacker.
You can use the below steps to revert back to adware-less Firefox.
1) Reset Prefs
*Navigate to '''about:config''' in your Address Bar
*Press the "I'll be careful, I promise!" button to proceed
*Search for trovi and reset all prefs that pull up by right clicking > Reset
2) Remove any programs that you don't recognize or remember installing from your Control Panel (Start > Control Panel > Uninstall a Program)
3) Remove any extensions that you don't recognize or remember installing from Firefox.
*Firefox 29 and above:(Press the menu button ([[Image:new fx menu]] > Add-ons > Extensions)
*Firefox 28 and below:[[Image:Firefox Button Add-ons > Extensions)
4) Download ADW Cleaner to wipe out any remnants of the adware.

• Why have I lost my gmail email address twice since syncing my Nokia C3-01 phone with Firefox?

I originally had a btinternet email address which was apparently my primary Google email address. I had great difficulty obtaining a Google gmail address which eventually became my primary email address. My original btinternet email address became my 'recovery email address'. Since 'syncing' my new Smart phone with Firefox I have lost the use of my gmail address and Google now refers to the btinternet address as my primary email address - which I don't want!! I have already 'recovered' my gmail address once - only for it to disappear again subsequent to using my mobile phone. Please help!

I read a few more discussions on this problem elsewhere on-line with the suggestion that I had a bug on my computer that hijacked my email account to send emails elsewhere (not that I had any clue on how to discover that on my computer).
I followed the suggestion to access my email account on-line and change my password and make it stronger. I did that and was able to get my emails downloaded to my computer and other devices.
I'm pretty sure that my original problem started when I unsubscribed from the Calorie Counter on-line newsletter by pressing a link at the bottom of the email I received from them. A screen came up that said I was unsubscribed and then disappeared in a flash. The experience seemed odd and weird compared to other times when I've unsubscribed from something.
As a test I resubscribed to the newsletter and then unsubscribed. I was directed to one of CCounter's internal web pages and went through a couple of steps in order to finish the process... all very professional and obviously on the newsletter's website.
So the lesson I learned was have a strong password for my email and change it occasionally. And do the same for other accounts that are password protected.

Hi there
Sorry for hijacking your thread as put by Dahveed. However I have resolved my issue so I thought I'll share it with the rest of you.
I checked for the error 3194 in youtube and I found some good videos that tell you how to resolve the problem. The issue I was facing was the actually (I know because I have resolved it now) the communication between my computer and apple server which can be fixed as following (if you are using windows):
There is file in following directory:
C:\Windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts
The file normally has no extension and it is in file format. You need to open it and make sure that every line that has apple server id starts with "#". In my case one of the line started directly with the ip address and then gs.apple.com.
Perform your restore/update after that and hopefully it should be resolved (mine did).
Cheers

• I am getting bulk junk mail and the sender is using my email address. How do I stop it?

They do not come into my main account, only through Thunderbird. I email myself sometimes, so I cannot make a filter to block myself.

In most cases, someone has acquired your email address and is simply pasting it into the "From:" box when he builds and transmits his spam messages. He hasn't "hacked" your account, and he isn't sending from any equipment you have any control over. Changing passwords almost always has zero effect, since he isn't logging in as you. Have you ever found any of these messages in your Sent folder?
You started a thread, then posted a reply in a separate thread. It's easy enough when you get an email notification of a reply to your thread, as the link in the email will bring you straight here.
If you want to add to your own thread, look in your "profile" here on this forum to find a list of your previous postings. Or bookmark your thread in your browser.
John99 has simply joined your two threads together to help anyone trying to help you.
Since you have no control over what any 3rd party does on his own computer (or more likely, an "owned" or hijacked computer) you can't stop him.
Anyway, why bother with a filter if the bad messages are being placed into Bulk or Spam? Your email provider's anti-spam system would appear to be doing its job. And if they aren't labelled as Spam or Junk, don't be afraid to do so yourself. Good spam and junk filtering is bit more sophisticated than just looking at the ostensible "From:" address; it will also be looking at IP addresses and checking against blacklists for known spam sources, and using heuristics to identify patterns.
Plus what finitarry said. ;-)

• Someone is using my email address and sending virus emails how can I stop this happening?

Someone has hijacked my address book and is sending virus infected mail using my email address to other people in my address book. How do I get rid of this hacker from my Mac, and how do I prevent this happening again.

Your mail account has almost certainly been hacked on the server, not on your computer, unless someone has had access to the latter.
Log in to the mail server's web interface and change the password. If you use the same password for any other accounts, change those passwords too, and make them all different. Internet passwords should be random strings of at least 10 characters. You most likely don't need to, and should not be able to, remember them. They should be saved in your keychain and backed up with the rest of your data.
One way to generate a secure password is the following. Triple-click anywhere the line below to select it:
openssl rand -base64 10 | cut -c-14 | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected line to the clipboard (command-C). Launch the Terminal application and paste into the window that opens (command-V). A string of 14 random characters will appear in a TextEdit window. Use that string, or a substring, as the password. To generate another random string, press the up-arrow key and then the return key with the Terminal window active. You can then quit Terminal.
If the compromised account is on Gmail, then changing the password may not be enough. Follow all of Google'sinstructions to secure it.

• Email address deleted!

Well I am staggered by this - my wife's very long term email address which is on a sub account of mine was hijacked and used as the Sent From email in a spam situation.
NOTE: not a virus on our computer at all, just someone copying the address and inserting it in the SENT from section when they send the spam from their computer. I've been in IT for 10 years and this is a very common spam tactic - you'll know when it happens as you'll start getting bounced emails back from people you've never ever contacted before. Usually it fizzles out after a few days when they move on to using someone else's email address.
After a week of talking to BT I'm told that nothing can be done as they have now permanently deleted the email address and it can never be used again!
As a very long term email address you will understand the havoc this causes!
AND NOT OUR FAULT WHATSOEVER....
So in other words be very wary about relying heavily on a BT email address as you could lose it at any time through no fault of your own!
And once its gone that's it, you will instantly lose any incoming emails with no retrieval option.
That is just ridiculous BT.... I was asked if I wanted to set up a new similar named email for her - em, no thanks, have gone to GMail.

Hi. Welcome to the forums.
As you say, the email account was spoofed in a spam run, and nothing can be done.
Frankly why did you contact the BT support team ? Did you ask them to delete the email address ?
I believe that most, if not all, the calls to the helpdesk are recorded, so if you know the time and dates of the call - perhaps you have see if the Mods can find out what was said. If you didn't ask for the email address to be deleted, then it was done without your permission.
As it was a sub account, typically if deleted by the user, it will be in a state of limbo. Emails to it will not fail, but will be lost. However after 110 days I believe now, (it was 90 days), the email address becomes availablle again. It is only primary addresses that are permanently deleted and not made available again (though I it's possible they may becomre available after 7 years. I've not been able to find out).
So - if the deletion was done in the usual manner, even by the support people, the address can either be re-instated, or perhaps the next best scenario be available to choose after 110 days from deletion.

• Email Address Compromised

I have received "From: [email protected]
Subject: Returned mail: see transcript for details" in my mail box today. The sender of the undeliverable mail is using my email address with another name apearing before. "From: Jeremy <*my address*@mac.com>". This has happened three times this morning with three different names preceeding my address. How are hackers able to send an email using my address as the sending address via .Mac? Do I need to worry, or just delete an ignore the [email protected] messages.
Thanks. Brad.

Doubtful anyone has hacked your computer or email account.
Sounds like a spammer has hijacked your email address only using it to appear as the sending email address for bulk spam mailings.
For many email accounts, there is nothing preventing someone from entering any email address in the email address field for the account preferences to appear as the sending email address for a message. Spammers use bogus email addresses to appear as the sending email address for their garbage and sometimes hijack a valid email address.
In addition to my .Mac account, I also access a POP type account provided by my ISP with Mail. Going to Mail > Preferences > Accounts under the Account Information tab for the account preferences, I can enter your email address in the Email Address field for the account preferences which will appear as the sending email address for a message sent with this email account or I can enter your email address as the Reply To email address.
Unless an ISP or email account provider prevents entering a different email address in the Email Address field when sending a message with an account they provide, there is little you can do.
I had the same occur not long ago with an old Earthlink email account. I forwarded some of the bounced messages to Earthlink. The bounced messages should contain the sender's computer IP address.
I suggest contacting .Mac with this information but other than that, there isn't much you can do.

• Email address change--how does this affect laptop and nook?

I use my Adobe ID only to authorize my laptop and Nook. I need to change my email address which seems easy on the FAQs, but how do I then reauthorize my laptop and Nook? And, if I do this, are all my existing library books unreadable since they were downloaded by what the Nook thinks is a different user? I'm almost sure I won't be able to return any books in ADE on my laptop, but I can live with that if I can still read the books on the Nook.
Thanks in advance.

The sync process with iTunes transfers the email account settings (for your chosen accounts via your iPhone sync preferences) from the Mail application on your Mac to the iPhone's email application.
The iPhone is running OS X and the iPhone's email client can be considered a mobile version of the Mail application.

Hi,
I would guess this is an AIM valid Screen Name such as an Apple issued @mac.com account.
I would also guess you travel to other countries.
There have been several posts about @mac.com names and people who travel and use their Screen Name elsewhere having the name Suspended.
Can you Log in here https://settings.aim.com/ ?
Is this where you saw the Suspended message ?
For AIM issued name the answer is to change your Password as this tends to prove you own the account.
This does not work for Apple IDs used as AIM Valid Screen Names as AIM can't tell when the password is changed (They can only see it when you log in)
AIM's Suspended Account page has an email ([email protected]) on it to contact if your account remains Suspended.
However you need to be very clear that you have an Apple Issued Name and that you know that resetting the password that works for AIM Names and that you would like them to reset the account.
More recently this has been a sticking point. It seems the Contact you get does not always know about the agreement that AIM recognises Apple Issued IDs as Valid Screen Names and that the AIM servers can only view the passwords at specific times (or at least confirm them) so you changing it will make no difference and that they have to step in manually.

• I am trying to change or add the email address which is attached to my itunes account. I keep getting a notice saying email address is already verified for another Apple ID. Im sure its one of my devices. How can I get my current email address added?

My itunes account is attached to an email account that I no longer have and cannot retrieve. I have been having trouble with purchases made to my itunes account and want to view my purchases. The support center said that they would email me the purchase history. However, I don't have that email address. When I go to change my email address to my current one, I get a message in red saying that "the email address is already verified for another Apple I.D." I'm sure it is one of my devices as we have 4 ipods and 2 iphones. How can I get my account to use my current email address? If one of my devices was registered using my current email address as it apparently was, do I need to figure out which device that is and remove the email address from that account? I'm so confused. I just want ALL my devices to use my current email address. I need to replace the old email address with my current one. How do I do that?
thanks for any assistance.

Your best bet would be to try resetting the password to the account that you would like to use via iForgot
Once you log in to that account change the email address to anything, it can even be fake its just a placeholder
After you do that you will be free to change your old email address on your appleID to the new one that is now free to be used as it is no longer attached to the other account.

• In Thunderbird, I cannot send email. I am asked to enter an email address in Mail and Newsgroup Account settings but when I click on this option, nothing opens.

I can connect to Thunderbird and receive email. However, I cannot send emails. When I press send (either from replying to an email or entering an email address manually) I get the following error message:
Sending of message failed.
No sender specified. Please fill in your email address in the Mail & Newsgroup Account settings.
When I click on the menu option within the email message Tools/Mail & Newsgroup, the message minimises and the programme returns me to my inbox. There is no Mail & Newsgroup setting on the mail programme.
