Email attachments to Windows users

When I used to use Panther as an OS, if I emailed people with Windows machines I could simply attach a graphic or file in Mail, check "Windows friendly attachments" and when they got the email they could open the attachments easily.
Now, using Tiger and Mail, if I do the same thing with the attachments, the recipients tell me that the graphics and other attachments "embed" in their emails and they can't open the attachments. Only if I Zip the files can they open and use them easily. Is this something I can solve in Mail, or is the problem at their end? Is there any way I can just get back to attaching files as Windows friendly without having to Zip them?

You might try Mail Attachments Iconizer (http://lokiware.info/Mail-Attachments-Iconizer) and see if it helps.
However, some files and PC mail programs may still have problems.
Good luck. ...pt

  • Mail attachments to windows users

when iI send mail with attachments to Windows users, they can't click on the attachment to view it, they can only download the file. I am sending the mail with windows friendly attchments selected. Any ideas on how I can fix this??

I use a PC laptop running Windows XP at work and we use Outlook as our email client.
I have the PC laptop at home with me and I just sent an email with Mail on my PB to my business email address. I used RTF for message composition, inserted a signature composed with RTF and added a PDF file as an attachment with Send Windows Friendly selected.
I downloaded the message and attachment with Outlook and when opening the message, I was able to open the attachment from within the message by double-clicking on the attached file.
I searched for an available option or setting with Outlook that would prevent me from doing this but I couldn't find one.
Long story short, I did not experience the same as you are reporting so based on my test, this is not a Mail.app problem unless you are describing the problem in a way that I'm not understanding.

  • Sending Mail attachments to windows users

When sending Mail attachments (Jpegs) to windows PCs they arrive embedded in the message body, not as an attachment that can be saved.  Can I, or the recipient, do anything to rectify this?

    From Mail Help:
If Windows users have trouble with your attachments
Windows users might not be able to read attachments you send, the messages they’re attached to, or both; or they might see two files when you’ve sent only one.
    Try these solutions:
Choose Edit > Attachments > Always Send Windows Friendly Attachments.
Choose Edit > Attachments > “Always Insert Attachments at End of Message” to automatically have attachments inserted at the end of a message. Otherwise, some Windows recipients might not easily see all of your message because parts of it are put into attachments, which they have to open to read.
Use filename extensions, such as .doc for a Microsoft Word document, in the names of files you send to Windows recipients. This way, the files can be read by a Windows application.
If you send a file (for example, “MyFile”) to someone who uses a Windows computer, the recipient might see two files: “MyFile” and “._MyFile.” The recipient can ignore the file named “._MyFile.”
If you have a New Message window open, the Edit > Attachments commands don’t contain “Always” and they apply only to the message you’re currently composing.
If you haven’t set the default, click Attach in the toolbar of the New Message window and select the Send Windows Friendly Attachments checkbox.

  • Cannot access attachments from Windows users

Recently I've had a few emails from friends using Windows with attachments (usually daft videos or the like).
The message shows up in mail.app at being around 3Mb, for example, and in the mail list shows as having 2 attachments.
When I open the message it only shows 1 attachment (usually their little 10Kb signature graphic or some such), but not the main, large, attachment.
Anyone else experienced this, or found a solution?
    Steve

I assume that both machines are on the same home network, and that there are no external gateways/routers/firewalls etc. in the way? No wireless networks?
Is the Windows machine XP, or something else? What are the firewall settings on the Windows machine? Can you access any other FTP site from the PC?

  • Emails sent with Mail show as double for Windows users

I just restored my computer, and trying to go back to Mail instead of the bloated Outlook. However, I am having the same problem as before:
every time i send an email, the recipient always sees a single message with double the content. This means he receives 1 email, but the content (body of email) appears twice.
It looks like the email shows the HTML version first, and then you scroll down and see the PlainText version at bottom. This ONLY happens on my emails being sent to Windows users.
While it might not be bad for a single message or two, when we have long email chains it results in really really long email chains getting doubled and doubled. Its ridiculous.
Can anyone suggest a solution to this so that I can go back to using speedy Mail?

wow...well...ummm....sometimes people need more then plain text for business emails?
while that is a "solution" its not a viable option.
i need a solution that allows me to send html email so that windows users can view like a normal email, and not double content.

  • Cannot download email attachments windows 7 lion bootcamp MacBook Pro.

I cannot download or upload email attachments with windows 7 on lion bootcamp. Attached files such as xxx.doc,  yyyy.jpg, or zzz.txt  erroneously try to download as *icloud* and of course fail. By * I mean alphanumeric string. icloud mail tries to download perfectly good files as gibberish. On my mac lion side the mail function works fine. On the bootcamp side all non-icloud mail functions and browser functions work fine. I can easily send, forward, reply to and receive icloud mail. The only thing wrong is that I cannot sucessfully unload or download icloud email attachments.

You will have better exposure for your query in the Boot Camp forum:

  • After Leopard install some Windows users report my Mail messages as Phising

After having installed Leopard I can send emails from Mail but when I send replies to emails received from Windows users they receive error reports explaining my messages are Phishing and thus they do not open them.....
Since more often than a few years ago I am experiencing als sorts of problems similar to those of Microsoft users, I do not understand why Apple is still producing these Gates bashing tv-adds..... I hope though the problems are solved quickly, and trust that Apple will reimburse their customers for doing the work that should have been done by their software testing staff....

No, the issue has been with us all the way through the versions of Leopard -- it is not new to SL and Mail 4.x.
I have not yet tested Mail 4.x for this aspect, but in Mail 3.x, if you used RTF, but only one font, and sent an attachment, Mail would automatically convert to Plain Text. Two or more, it would not. Forwarding was often problematic because multiple fonts were in use, and Mail could not convert to Plain Text.
The issue has always been specific to Outlook and Outlook Express users -- that might extend to the Windows Mail in Vista as well. The same message sent to someone using, say Thunderbird on a PC, including Vista, and no problem.
The MS email clients do not handle Rich Text they receive very well, and when they send in RTF, it is with a proprietary version of RTF that gives some people trouble, although not users of Mail or Entourage.

Not sure what you mean by soft copy attachments. But to help ensure Windows users have no problem coping with attachments from Mail Control+Click on the attachment that displays as an inline image and select 'View as Icon'. Also, in Mail>Edit>Attachments make sure 'Always send Windows-friendly attachments' is ticked.

  • Windows users are not receiving attachments sent out of Mail

I am a consultant. I use Mail in Snow Leopard. Software is up to date.
Our business uses Microsoft Exchange Server 2003. All other consultants in the company are using Windows. In Mail I connect via IMAP. It has worked flawlessly until recently.
Recently, my corporate clients (various clients not related to one another nor using the same email server) have complained that they are not receiving my email attachments. It is not universal. It is inconsistent, even with the same client. Sometimes the attachments are there and sometimes not.
I have verified two things. 1) That the attachments are present in the emails in my outbox. 2) That the emails leave our server with the attachment (I accomplished this by contacting our Microsoft Exchange service provider and giving them examples, which they tracked down and verified that the emails left them with the attachments.).
Our service provider suggested that Mail is adding something to the email that is causing Outlook (the common denominator is that the clients receiving the emails are all on Outlook) to strip the attachment. Or, the antivirus is stripping it. Something about the Mail email is causing Outlook or some antivirus software to strip the attachments.
Has anyone else encountered this? Is there something that can be done?
Right now I've had to go to Thunderbird in order for my attachments to be received. I'd rather stay with Mac all the way, but I cannot trust that my clients will receive attachments.
I'm hoping that when our company changes to MS Exchange Server 2007, that the problem will go away, since Mail can interface with the 2007 version directly. But, until then, I would really like to stick with Mail, if I can find a work around.
    Thanks.
    Matt

I am now having exactly the same problem.  But here is a new wrinkle.  ALL the persons having the problem you describe - that attachments are stripped off - are using cox.net as their e-mail provider.   I am not saying that all cox.net mail users are having the problem, but those having the problem are among the cox.net e-mail users.  None of my recipients using aol.com, yahoo.com, gmail.com, verizon.net, zona.net, etc. are having any problems.  Only some of the cox.net e-mail users.
I suspect but have not checked that they are all PC users (I use a Mac with Mail) and, now that I have become aware of this thread, I will check if they use Outlook.
It started a few months ago.  I had no problems before and now this, with the same people.  Obviously something must have changed but what?
Please let me know if you have found anything more about this - or even a solution?  :-)

  • Lion-Windows users cannot see attachments

I just upgraded to Lion, and now some Windows users cannot see/find attachments. I did all that was advised (clicking on the "Windows user friendly" list), but to no avail. I sent to several Windows users and no one can see attachments with the new Mail program. Also, one of the most important icons in the Mail toolbar ("Add Attachment") seems to be missing. This sometimes helped in previous Mail versions when sending to PCs, but I cannot locate it in Lion. Looks like I will have to use Microsoft Office Outlook for email. This is too bad, as I like the other features the new Apple Mail program has, but must use a trustworhty email program.

    Scott,
The issue is one I am chasing, and is due to Lion's change to not send Plain Text (apparently).  Although changed in the Compose window, when reviewed, it will have been sent with HTML, anyway.
While the actual problem is with MS and Outlook or Outlook Express, the work around once was to use the command to Make Plain Text before sending.

  • Windows user having trouble reading attachments since 10.4.4

Has anyone else experienced problems sending attachments (specifically Word docs) to Windows users? I have experienced this only since the latest batch of updates. I have checked my settings and 'Windows friendly' is the default for mail. I have also sent the docs I have had trouble with to an old mac and this works fine which leads me to think its 10.4.4 as the cause?
    Help!!!!!!!!!!!

As I have emailed, in part:
Well, this Mac friend is not all right! Please tell me the exact method of creating this document, and the version of Word being used. It is not recognized as a valid format by any of my applications that should open it. Also, tell me how you are connected to the internet.
    and
Placing the cursor over the attachment, reports it to be of the type octet stream. This is most often seen when an exchange server, or some other MS program is involved, and working improperly.
Also, try switching off windows friendly setting and sending to me again. Does the document open properly when you open the message sent to me in the Sent mailbox?
Try sending me a JPEG, or other type of attachment -- this might help to check for a transmission error. This does not appear to be simply a Mail problem.
