Email crashed, revealing hidden Library folders. Prgm Now Aborated!

Email Crashed after hanging forever to send an email (on my home network) then switched to finder and popped open three folder windows of forbidden (System Library) contents. I have no other problems.
I have screen captures showing activity monitor with email crash details, system and email logs from Console,
I also have the system log as a PDF + Email Crash.hang FILE I am unable to find an app to open and read?  If anyone can possibly take a look and let me know why the crash, It may shed light? I went to Genius bar. No Help there. At the nearby Apple Genius Bar, the App refused; when setting filter rules, to show COLORS, that was last in the filter list (spam patrol); the GUI was aborated eclipsing (not showing) the very last slot in the RULES WINDOW that I set to color.  The COLOR selection was grayed out when the PLUS will clicked on the last filter item (because it was set further down but setting a new color option was not displayed thanks to the now screwed up program (Apple Mail).
It was impossible to select a color in the list of rule actions - UNTIL WE RE-STARED MAIL? Everything came back to normal?  DO I need to do complete a system reinstall, or can I just install the Mail program somehow? I'm on a MacBook Pro Retina w 16 GB RAM, 70 GB Memory left,  out of 500GB, running sys 10.9.5 .
Thanks for the assistance?  I would appreciate interaction via screen sharing to debug if possible?
Peter

If you have a major problem with a system installed application, it is best to simply reinstall the entire OS using recovery which will place a new install over what you have. If you want to be 100% sure not to leave any correupt 'leftovers', the only sure way is to erase and reinstall from scratch. You might want to try to figure out why Mail crashed though - how large was the email you were trying to send? To how many people? Have you rebuilt your mailboxes lately - that might help? Depending on your ISP/email provider, most set limits as to the size of an email/attachment and the number of recipients (as well as how many in an hour or day, etc) - these are all measure to not only discourage spam, but to preserve the bandwidth available for everyone.
PS Could you explain what you mean by "aborated"? I am not familiar with this term.

  • Accesing "hidden" library folders from a Time Machine Backup?

My iMac crashed (apparently permanently) while attempting to install Mavericks.  I do have a Time Machine Backup, thank goodness.  However, my iWeb "domain.sites2" file is in a "hidden" directory within the "library/application support" folder.  How can access it from the backup drive itself -- since I haven't got my new/repaired iMac back yet to restore it to??
(BTW, I'm ASSUMING that these hidden directories will be restored to the new machine when I do a restore from my Time Mahine back-up, right???)
    Thanks!
    Tony

You should be able to just restore the photos.
First though, you might consider making a backup of the drive that has the photos on it. I would get another external HD (anything except WD will do), and use CarbonCopyCloner to clone the drive.
What you would do to restore the photos is just click on the drive that has the Time Machine backups on it, and navigate to one of the backups or the MobileSync folder. In TM the backups are arranged by date; I'm not sure about MobileSync. Then you just open the backup and navigate to the photos, and drag the folder with the photos to your desktop.
I am sure the people at your local Apple store would help you.
    Sorry for your loss.

  • File Library Organize Library Reorganize files  Now can't locate music.  How do I get my music back in the playlists.  Still all in folders in music file??  HELP!

I recently downloaded iTunes 10, found my library and things looked great..........UNTIL.....I clicked on the reorganize files box in the 'Organize Library' window.  Now all my music has a little ! next to it and says it cannot locate the song.  I have all the music still in the folders but iTunes not being able to locate it.  How do I get everything back the way it was??

if I set up another library, will that affect my ipod?
You will be given the chance to sync that iPod when it is connected if the iPod is set to sync automatically; if you choose that option, the music will be erased from the iPod. If not, you can transfer purchased content from the iPod and add additional music to it. Click here for more information.
If I set up another library, do I go to that one when using my ipod.
    Yes.

Working on a MAC with a Kobo.  ADE won't let me read DRM books - 4.0 crashes when opening library books (EVERY. SINGLE. I have wasted hours on this and I'm getting really annoyed.

Thank you! This worked. But now I copied my files back, which was successful. But the last file did´t work. I even loaded this file from the bookstore. When I try to load this file, ADE crashes and gives me the following report:

  • Recieved email from WHICH with [Request ID :##55675##] : in the subject heading is crashing my THUNDERBIRD when I move the email from INBOX to local folders

Recieved email from Computer Help at WHICH magazine with [Request ID :##55675##] : in the subject heading is crashing my THUNDERBIRD (and other programs) when I move the email from INBOX to local folders. The only work-around found so far is to shut them down with task manager, as they wont otherwise close.
However if I move the Reply with the same subject heading from my SENT box to LOCAL FOLDERS I dont get the problem.
Hav I found a faulty software trap in the base code.
Thunderbird is up to date and it is on a 64kb intel i7 quad processor 8G ram desktop using windows 7 latest update.

To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try one of the following:
*Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
*Restart the operating system in '''[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safe_mode safe mode with Networking]'''. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode Windows 8], [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7 Windows 7], [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-vista Windows Vista], [http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx?mfr=true" Windows XP], [http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564 OSX]
; If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.

  • Iphoto library folders

Why is it when you mess around with the folder names & change them they dissapear from iphoto? I'd like to organize my iphoto library folders better then having to search multiple numbered folders but when I start renaming then it's no longer in iphoto.

Yes, that is what I am saying.
I can tell you though, if you upgrade to iPhoto 6 you will be happier.
In iPhoto 6, the name you give your rolls is also reflected in the Finder.
When I import dated folders of photos I make sure I give the folder a name like
"12/25/2006 Christmas" or 7/04/2006 Fireworks". So if I need to find a photo, it is there in the Finder under the Year with the same roll name.
You can rename your rolls now, though the new name for the rolls won't be reflected in the Finder until you install iPhoto 6 and upgrade your library.
I can also tell you that I keyword all my photos. In iPhoto preferences under keywords, I add the new keywords I need. After each import I keyword all my photos.
Using Spotlight to search for a keyword will give me all the photos with that keyword. I can then find the photo in the Finder by Control clicking on the photo in the search window and scrolling to "reveal in Finder"
There are lots of more little tricks so ask away if you need more info.
To get you started, here is some stuff I put together for iPhoto 5:
--First thing to know and remember is this...Do not drag any images, folder of images into the iPhoto Library in the Finder. Images have to be imported into iPhoto within the application. Do not scan images and save them into the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder. Save them to another location such as the Pictures folder or even the desktop. You can then import them into iPhoto.
If you have already put files/folders in the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder then you will also find out that if you try to import them into iPhoto you will get an error message. No worry, just drag them to the desktop and import from there.
--All images that you import are shown in the library view. You can choose how you want to view, by rolls, by date, by rating, etc. When you put images in an Album, slideshow, book, etc, you are actually just putting pointers to those images in the library. You are not adding more images. If you delete an image from the Album it will still be in the library. If you delete an image from the library it is deleted from iPhoto's database (the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder) and your hard drive ONLY after you empty iPhoto's trash. (unless you have it backed up somewhere else)
--You have a folder of images on your hard drive and want to import them into iPhoto. Drag the folder of images into an open iPhoto Library window and the folder of photos will be copied into the library, resulting in a new roll with the name of the folder. You now have two copies of those photos, the ones in iPhoto's database and the ones on your desktop. You can keep the ones on your desktop that you just imported as backup or you can delete that folder. You can also drag a folder of photos into an empty space in the source column and a new roll and album will be created at the smae time for those images in the folder. The album will have the same name as the folder you dragged into the source column.
-- you scan a picture/pictures and save it in a folder. You cannot scan directly into iPhoto or the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder.
You want all your photos in iPhoto so you import them into iPhoto.
Now you have two copies of that picture/pictures, so you can delete the originals that were in the scanned folder and keep the one/ones that were imported into iPhoto.
-- You download pictures from your camera into iPhoto.
There is now one copy of each of the pictures. (DO NOT HAVE IPHOTO DELETE THE IMAGES FROM YOUR CAMERA! DELETE THEM MANUALLY WITH THE CAMERA-if something goes wrong with the import and they are never imported and then they are deleted from the camera you might end up losing those images)
--You want to change something about a picture you imported, such as
cropping it or changing the size, or changing the orientation.
Once you do that to a picture, you now have two copies of the picture
in iPhoto, the original and the edited one. The edited one will be in the library organize view. The original is packed away in an Original folder in your iPhoto Library folder under the date of the roll. You can always revert to the original by control clicking on the photo and choose "revert to orginal" You will not have this choice if you used iPhoto Diet to get rid of the Originals.
(a quick note on cropping within iPhoto...when you are in edit mode, you automatically will be in the crop mode with cross hairs to highlight the crop area. To finish cropping you must click the crop button and then go back to library view and your cropped picture will be there.
--You want to use Photoshop or another graphic program to edit a picture in your iPhoto library.
You can open up prefs for iPhoto and choose
For iPhoto 5--"when double clicking on
photo" ..do" choose "other" and select Photoshop. Now you can edit all
pictures in your iPhoto library in PhotoShop by double clicking. If you save the photo with the same name and as a flattened file it will be saved right into iPhoto and you will see the changes. If you don't want to save it into iPhoto then do a "save as" and save to the desktop. You will then have the original photo still in iPhoto and your new edited photo on the desktop.
For iPhoto 6 (from the Apple Help Menu)-Have you ever used PS as the external editor set up within iPhoto Prefs?
    From the iPhoto Help menu;
"Choosing what happens when you click the Edit button
When you want to edit a photo, you can have the photo open in iPhoto's edit view, in a separate window, in full-screen view, or in another application.
    To choose a preference:
    Choose iPhoto > Preferences.
Click General at the top of the Preferences window.
Under Edit Photo, select one of the following options:
"In main window" opens the photo in the main viewing area.
"In separate window" opens the photo in a separate window.
"Using full screen" opens the photo in full-screen view.
"In application" opens the photo in another application you choose.
To open a photo in its own window when "Main window" is selected, press the Option key when double-clicking the photo.
To open a photo in edit view when "Separate window" is selected, press the Option key when double-clicking the photo.
Note: Any video clip you imported into iPhoto will always open in QuickTime Player when you double-click it."
    And...
    "Editing photos in another application
You can do many editing tasks in iPhoto, such as rotating and cropping a photo, changing a color photo to black and white, adjusting exposure and contrast, and reducing red-eye. If you want to make other changes to a photo, you can open it in another image-editing application, such as Adobe Photoshop.
To edit photos in another application:
Set your preferences to open photos in another application when you double-click them or click the Edit button. (See Related Topics below.)
Double-click the photo to open it in the application.
Edit the photo and save it using the same name and file format.
The changes you made to the photo will be visible when you return to iPhoto.
IMPORTANT: When you double-click a RAW-format photo, iPhoto creates a copy of the photo in JPEG format, which opens in the other application. To edit the photo in its original RAW format, drag the photo from the iPhoto window to the Finder, and then use the other application to open it. (If you previously used iPhoto to edit the RAW photo, select the photo and choose Photos > Revert to Original before dragging it to the Finder. This way, you can edit the photo using its RAW data in the other application.) If you want to import the photo back into iPhoto, you must first save it as a JPEG or TIFF file."
--Or, with iPhoto open, you can drag a picture from the library window
to your desktop (you see a + sign on the pic you are dragging). You now
have two of the same picture, one in the iPhoto library and one on your desktop. You can open up the one on your desktop in any graphic program and work on it. The one in iPhoto stays the same. You can also share/export the picture/pictures to your desktop or folder to work on them or do batch processing, etc. You will still have the originals in your iPhoto Library.
--Or, you can open up the ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library/folders and option drag any
picture out of the folder to your desktop. Notice that you will see a plus sign while dragging the photo. This is copying the file to your desktop
I would advise anyone not to do this as they might forget to use the option key and drag the photo out. Next time you open iPhoto the photo will be missing.
-The one option you will not find within iPhoto is to resize photos. iPhoto wants you to keep all full size images within iPhoto to give you the best size for printing or using for other applications. You can however go to Share>export (for iPhoto 5) or File>export (for iPhoto 6) and choose the naming scheme, input the dimensions and export to the desktop to use for uploading to a web space or emailing.
--to email a photo set up your email client in iPhoto Preferences. Once done, just select a photo/photos and hit the email icon in the toolbar.
If you use a web based email, then you need to export the photo to the desktop and upload it from there.

    You’re welcome.
Disabling the junk filter was meant just to identify the problem. It’s clearly not an acceptable solution. If the junk filter is crashing on you, try resetting the junk filter database (Preferences > Junk Mail > Reset) and re-enabling the junk filter. If Mail starts crashing again, proceed as follows to thoroughly get rid of all the files used by the junk filter, so that Mail creates them anew:
    1. If you have a .Mac account and .Mac synchronization of Mail data is enabled either in Mail > Preferences > General or in System Preferences > .Mac, disable it before proceeding.
    2. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/.
    4. Locate LSMMap2 and move it to the Trash. This file stores information about what does and doesn’t constitute junk, and allows the junk filter to learn. Deleting this file is what Preferences > Junk Mail > Reset does. The file was called LSMMap in early versions of Mail; delete that as well if you see it.
    5. Locate any MessageRules.plist (Mail 2.x) and/or MessageSorting.plist (Mail 1.x) files and move them to the Desktop. This is where Mail stores all the rules, including the rule that governs what the junk filter does.
    6. Locate DefaultCounts and move it to the Trash. This file keeps statistics about the number of messages that have been marked as junk, either automatically by the junk filter or manually by the user.
    7. Look for the account folders. The name of each account folder starts with the account type (POP, IMAP, Mac), followed by the account username and the incoming mail server. Open each of the account folders, locate the Junk.mbox or Junk.imapmbox folder within it, and move it to the Trash if present.
    8. Go to ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/. Locate any Junk.mbox mailboxes there (their name may include the account name in parenthesis), and move them to the Trash.
Note: Steps 7 and 8 may be unnecessary. Also, messages in Junk mailboxes with an .mbox suffix are stored locally and will be lost forever as a result of doing steps 7 and 8. If there is a chance that you have legit messages there that you want to preserve, either try skipping those steps, or move the messages to another mailbox in Mail first, or move Junk.mbox to the Desktop (to be imported back later) instead of to the Trash. Junk mailboxes with an .imapmbox suffix aren’t a concern because they are stored on the server and Mail would rebuild them automatically.
    9. Open Mail. As a result of removing the rules file, the junk filter will be disabled now. You may want to either shut down the Internet connection before opening Mail or take Mail offline immediately after opening it, to prevent Mail from downloading anything until the junk mail filter has been enabled again.
    10. Go to Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail, enable junk filtering and configure it however you wish. I recommend choosing Automatic mode and leaving all the other options checked.
    11. Go online again if you went offline in step 9.
    12. If the problem is fixed now and .Mac synchronization of Mail data was enabled at the beginning, enable it again, go to System Preferences > .Mac > Advanced, click Reset Sync Data, and choose the appropriate options to reset the Mail data stored on the .Mac server with the data locally stored on the computer, i.e. sync data must flow from the computer to the .Mac server.
If the above solves the problem and you don’t have any rules you’d like to preserve or recreating them is not a daunting task, the files moved to the Desktop in step 5 can be deleted.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

  • How to fix email crash in iOS 7

Since my ios7upgrade me iPad and iPhone email crashes frequently usually immediately after launch.
Seems to be aggrieved acted by selecting email messages to delete.
Google search didn't seem to indicate to me many others were having this problem
I'd like to rollback to iOS 6 but don't know how to
    Any suggestions either way?
    Cb

    THANK YOU!!
While I am also unsure what this "fix" is for, it resolved a problem I have had for months with iTunes and the Music app in iOS7.  I have about 4,500 songs in my iTunes library and before buying my iPhone 5S I had a Samsung Android phone.  Google music worked PERFECTLY and would always add anything from iTunes to it's library without a second thought.
However, after I setup my iPhone and got used to iOS7 I realized the Music app was only showing about 1/3 of my music. I turned off iTunes Match, I turned it on, I reset my phone, I tried everything.  My iPod Mini and iPhone would only show a portion of my iTunes library even when a cloud icon was next to a song.
I ended up downloading and using a Google Music App for iPhone which (here we go) could see all of my music. However, it drove me crazy that I had to use this 3rd party app when Apple and iOS7 should have worked and showed me every song I owned.
Well, after weeks of searching online for a solution on a whim I used the one above just to see if it had any effect. Sure enough, IT WORKED. How it worked, I have no idea. What was wrong, I have no idea. But within a few minutes ALL of my iTunes library is now visable on my iPad and iPhone using the proper iOS7 app and I was able to delete the 3rd party one.
    Amen!

  • Drag'n drop attachments from emails crashes Mails

    I just upgraded to 10.8.2
When I opened Mail it said it needed to rebuild the database. Ok, fine by me. Afterwards mail opened neatly. But when I dragged an attachment to the desktop the attachment got 'stuck' to my pointer. Meanwhile OS X went into overdrive and my mac got really hot.
Eventually I just killed the mail process in Activity Monitor. The attachment then vanished and my pointer, and OS X, returned to normal.
    - I REALLY NEED MAIL TO WORK PROPERLY -
Does anyone know a quick fix for this sticky problem?
    Thanks a Quadrillion,
    C.

The solution appears to be to erase your Mail's index file and let Mail rebuild it.
    1. Close Mail
    2. Go to homefolder > Library >  Mail > V2 > MailData and look for 'Envelope Index'. (to see the hidden library folder in the 'Go' menu you need to press the option key (alt)
    3. Delete 'Envelope Index'. No worries, this does not contain your mail files.
    4. Now restart Mail. Mail will ask you to re-import your emails. Click OK. This can take a long time depending on the number of mails you have. Took over an hour on my macpro and it needed two runs.
    5. done. You can drag and drop as before.
    C.

  • Backing up hidden Library folder in Lion?

Hi - need help with backups.
I'd prefer not to use Time Machine.  For the last however many years I've just been copying my Home folder (Documents/Music/Movies, etc) onto an external drive.
I know the Library folder is now hidden in Lion.  I know how to unhide it.
However, when I did the usual backup (dragging/dropping onto my external drive) the Libary folder IS there (I 'unhid' it before the backup) but there's *nothing* inside.
This might seem silly... but is the information still there but hidden?!
If my system crashed and I needed a file from my home Library -- (such as a .plist etc) -- where on earth is it?
Any recommendations of a good way to backup my system?  Again, I don't want to use Time Machine.
    Many many thanks!

Any recommendations of a good way to backup my system?
I don't use Time Machine either; instead I create a bootable clone on an external. This makes an exact copy (clone) of your current system on an external and you can boot from it if necessary. I use either/both Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper for this (I maintain two clones just in case) - you might want to check those out. My clone(s) have saved my b..... several times already when nothing would respond except to hit Option while booting up or restarting, which brings up the Startup Manager and your clone should be listed for you to choose.

  • How do I save photos from email to the photo library?

How do I save photos from email to the photo library? I've seen an online demo of users that hold their finger or thumb over the image for a few seconds and a "save photo" window option appears. That doesn't work on my 6-month old iphone. It's version 1.1.4 (4a102) ???? Help! Anybody with an answer?

Never mind. I figured out the 2.0 update. My system wasn't updating I-tunes...and the I-phone update option window was hidden behind some other system information. I figured it out. The download, install and re-synch took about an hour. Lots of horror stories out there about people trying to activate their new I-phones. Glad this worked for me!

iPhoto asked to upgrade library and has now come up empty even though my iPhoto file is over 130GB.  How do I get back my photos?   I am using OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 with Mavericks.   My iPhoto is 9.6.   I am very concerned as this file has all my photos for the last 15 years!

If the iPhoto Library is still 130 GB large, your photos are probably still inside; perhaps the library has a corruption.
Or the iPhoto Library is on drive, that is incompatible with iPhoto. Where is your iPhoto Library stored?
To check for a library corruption:  Ctrl-click or right-click the iPhoto library and select "Show Package Contents". This will show the folders inside the library package.
Are there folders called "Masters" or "Old Masters"?
If there is a folder "Old Masters", you are having a problem with recent bug, that corrupts iPhoto Libraries when upgrading. In that case, it would be best to restore your iPhoto Library from a backup you made before you upgraded to Yosemite.
Or, if no backup is available, copy the "old Masters" folder to a folder on your Desktop and create a new iPhoto library and import the Old Masters folder.
If there is no folder "old Masters" try to rebuild your iPhoto Library with the First Aid tools :
Make a backup copy of your iPhoto Library, but don't overwrite any older backups.
To launch the "First Aid Tools" hold down the options-command keys ⌥⌘ while double clicking your iPhoto Library.
Keep the keys held down firmly until the First Aid panel appears.
    Select  "Rebuild Database".

Is there anyone there? I hope there is someone who can you understand this problem and have the common sense to respond?
I open gmail. I want to save an email to one of my folders.
I position my cursor over the appropriate Folder icon or by choice, to the Trash.
The friendly finger pointing cursor icon changes to an arrow icon.
The hand icon allows me flawless access to opening and/or moving emails.
The arrow, however does not open the link.
On the Google menu bar the cursor hand with finger opens the links to Everett (my name), Search, Images, Maps and Play.
When I attempt to open the remaining links in the menu bar (YouTube, News, Gmail, Drive, Calendar and More) the arrow icon replaces the hand. The arrow icon does not work. It will not activate these links.  Nor does it open email messages in the Inbox.
Usually I reset, even reboot Safire and sometimes the problem goes away, then reappears.
Can you imagine if this condition should it happen to a tech savvy Google Support person? Perhaps one can share and make my problem go away.
I am considering dropping Google as my mail source. Unfortunate!

  • OS creating multiple user/library folders - need help

My computer has decided on it's own to revert back to it's original default settings causing me to lose all the changes that I have made, as well as forcing me to redo the set-up procedures for Mail, Safari and other browsers and applications. This is happening every day after I log off. In looking around for answers I found that Home/User is creating multiple libraries as I keep resetting the computer. I now have 8 library folders all with different contents. I'm sure this is why the computer is reverting to default. Do I delete the extra folders? How do I know which is the one to keep? The one with the most items? I was poking around the apps and other sections, but I don't remember moving or changing anything. I will have to start over again tomorrow and I will then have 9 folders. I would really appreciate someone to help me out of this dilemma.
iMac Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   I have DSL and had a phone line repair shortly before the problem started

It's the same with me. Just discovered, I have 15 additional users created. I'm most eager to learn why this is happening because I have not been able to 'auto login' using my own account.
