How can I view the sending internet router details (i.e. the IP address of the server that sent the email) for a mac mail message?

Select the message, and then choose View > Message > All Headers.
Show header details for all messages
Choose Mail > Preferences, click Viewing, and then choose All from the “Show header detail” pop-up menu.
You can customize the fields that Mail displays in header details. Choose Custom from the “Show header detail” pop-up menu, click Add (+), type the field name, and then click OK. To remove a field, select it in the list and click Remove (-).

    I have multiple email accounts set up on my iPhone, including one Work and one Personal account. I'd like for the iPhone to automatically reply to a message using the same account to which the email was sent (e.g., if someone emails me at my Personal address, the iPhone replies using that address) but I can't figure out how to do it.     I'm having the same problem; I've recently upgraded to the iPhone4 and I have two mail accounts on it: 1.) My personal gmail account and 2.) my work email which is using the imap version of google apps (it has our unique domain name instead of "@gmail.com") -
    So now, whenever I try to send an email from my work email it is delivered as though it was sent from my personal gmail account... +that's even if I choose to change the "from" field- in the drop down scroll menu+ ... I can see both account names and even if I choose my work email it is still delivered as from my personal - the only difference being that if I manually choose to "send it" from my work email a copy of the sent email is then delivered to my work inbox - yet it still lists the sender as my personal gmail account.
    This is very frustrating... My old 3g never had this problem so I am stumped as to what's causing this.

    I assume this is Apple Mail. Try this:
    Preferences > Accounts > your-first-account
    Select Outgoing Mail Server of account/name you wish to use and check Use only this server
    Repeat for other accounts.

  • Source ip address for icmp messages not what is expected

    We have a router that has interfaces in multiple VRFs.  One interface sits on an interface that is routed on the Internet.  Other interface sits on a VRF that is in a private address space and is used for WAN connectivity.  The strange behavior that I'm seeing is related to icmp messages coming off the router.  It appears that scanners hitting the Internet-facing interface cause the router to generate icmp messages (type 3) that are source using the IP address of the WAN-facing interface and they are routed across the WAN, into our data center and dropped by our firewall due to anti-spoofing rules.  Is this normal behavior?  Doesn't seem normal to me. Is this behavior something that can be changed via configuration?

    In a typical IP address spoofing attempt, the attacker fakes the source of packets in order to appear as part of an internal network. David Davis tells you three ways you can make an attacker's life more difficult—and prevent IP address spoofing. 
    As you know, the Internet is rife with security threats, and one such threat is IP address spoofing. During a typical IP address spoofing attempt, the attacker simply fakes the source of packets in order to appear as part of an internal network. Let's discuss three ways you can protect your organization from this type of attack.
    Block IP addresses
    The first step in preventing spoofing is blocking IP addresses that pose a risk. While there can be a reason that an attacker might spoof any IP address, the most commonly spoofed IP addresses are private IP addresses (RFC 1918) and other types of shared/special IP addresses.
    Here's a list of IP addresses—and their subnet masks—that I would block from coming into my network from the Internet:
    10.0.0.0/8
    172.16.0.0/12
    192.168.0.0/16
    127.0.0.0/8
    224.0.0.0/3
    169.254.0.0/16
    All of the above are either private IP addresses that aren't routable on the Internet or used for other purposes and shouldn't be on the Internet at all. If traffic comes in with one of these IP addresses from the Internet, it must be fraudulent traffic.
    In addition, other commonly spoofed IP addresses are whatever internal IP addresses your organization uses. If you're using all private IP addresses, your range should already fall into those listed above. However, if you're using your own range of public IP addresses, you need to add them to the list.
    Implement ACLs
    The easiest way to prevent spoofing is using an ingress filter on all Internet traffic. The filter drops any traffic with a source falling into the range of one of the IP networks listed above. In other words, create an access control list (ACL) to drop all inbound traffic with a source IP in the ranges above.
    Here's a configuration example:
    Router# conf t

    Internet service providers (ISPs) must use filtering like this on their networks, as defined in RFC 2267. Notice how this ACL includes permit ip any any at the end. In the "real world," you would probably have a stateful firewall inside this router that protects your internal LAN.
    Of course, you could take this to the extreme and filter all inbound traffic from other subnets in your internal network to make sure that someone isn't on one subnet and spoofing traffic to another network. You could also implement egress ACLs to prevent users on your network from spoofing IP addresses from other networks. Keep in mind that this should be just one part of your overall network security strategy.
    Use reverse path forwarding (ip verify)
    Another way to protect your network from IP address spoofing is reverse path forwarding (RPF)—or ip verify. In the Cisco IOS, the commands for reverse path forwarding begin with ip verify.
    RPF works much like part of an anti-spam solution. That part receives inbound e-mail messages, takes the source e-mail address, and performs a recipient lookup on the sending server to determine if the sender really exists on the server the message came from. If the sender doesn't exist, the server drops the e-mail message because there's no way to reply to the message—and it's very likely spam.
    RPF does something similar with packets. It takes the source IP address of a packet received from the Internet and looks up to see if the router has a route in its routing table to reply to that packet. If there's no route in the routing table for a response to return to the source IP, then someone likely spoofed the packet, and the router drops the packet.
    Here's how to configure RPF on your router:
    Router(config)# ip cef
    Router(config)# int serial0/0
    Router(config-if)# ip verify unicast reverse-path
    Note that this won't work on a multi-homed network.
    It's important to protect your private network from attackers on the Internet. These three methods can go a long way toward protecting against IP address spoofing. For more information on IP address spoofing, read "IP Address Spoofing: An Introduction."

    Hi i just got my first Blackberry. Only had it for one week and i think i messed it up. My wife has one and i wanted to input her address book into mine without loseing my info. I hooked both Blackberry s to the computer and use the desktop manager to import the info. I used the tranfer to a new Blackberry device option and i thought all was well until i looked into my address book and saw all my contacts where gone. I don t care about that there wasn t many of them and i can easily replace them but what is bothering me is her email address appears on the screen when i scroll over the email message inbox and its on the top of the email page. I get my emails not her s so its just the header in need changed so if anyone could help it would be great.

    The link for the word 'HERE' directs to a Evergreen School District page, which outside of Mobile Me and/or Aperture. Your school district network might be intercepting the request from Aperture and displaying the 'network authentication page' that you see, instead of the email. I would get with the IT department to see if they can help you get around this.
    Have you also tried using the 'Tell a Friend' feature from another network location, like starbucks or your home?

  • Archiving a Smart Mailbox to a RAW Message Source using Automator?

    In MAIL I can set a smart mailbox to say get emails from ("any" recipient contains [email protected])
    But in Automator when I use the Filter messages in mail I can't be that broad with my selection, I can only select sender, and not ANY recipient. Be that someone cc'd with that email address, the sender or reciever.
    One way around this is allowing Automator to select a Smart Mailbox from MAIL to do the selecting.
    But I can't get Automator to select a Smart Mailbox.
    What I need to do is take my Smart Mailbox content and every X# of days, for my needs it would be 7 days, export out last X# of days, again for me its 7 days, worth of emails as a RAW Message Source and append it to an existing RAW Message Source file in a specified folder.
    Or if appending to an existing file is not possible then create individual files but name them something like, Weekending_10_282006, where the date in file name matches the day the script was run.
    Then place this to always run on a Saturday.
    I am using this to backup messages for specific projects at work. And I would like to use it to backup emails from my cousin who is serving overseas in Iraq.

  • Blank incoming email messages - only in Mail

    There's some email lists that I subscribe to, with automated earthquake and volcano information, and recently the emails are blank, when I view them using Mac Mail. However, if I check my email with a browser, I can see the content of the message. If I look at these emails in Mail with the Raw Source, they are still blank. Does anybody know what is up? Someone thought perhaps a newer version of Mail is pickier about html. I've not found anyone else with the same problem in my office, and I don't see a mention of it on the discussion boards.

    First off, view the Long Header details (from Mail, choose View > Message > Long Headers; from MobileMe Mail, the gearbox button (list of actions) > Preferences > Viewing > Enable "Show Long Headers"). This exposes a whole lot of heretofore invisible data.
    Making sense of it is another issue, but I think I may have found something (from a Mac user, to boot) that seems to hit the nail right on the head.
    Robert Vaessen has a very extensive, scholarly post, dated January of this year, about this very issue on his site at <http://www.robsworld.org/blankemail.html>. The post is detailed, technical, and certainly worth reading for anyone who is concerned enough to have sought out this discussion thread. But to cut to the chase, here is his conclusion:
    +"It is my opinion, (based upon more than ten years worth of fighting spam, ten years of running web sites, and extensive research) that these blank emails (in my experience), and millions like them are part of a growing spam problem. These blank email messages represent part of a spammers whitelisting effort. Responses which generate bounce messages permit the spammer to refine his/her recipient list, while the ones that get delivered are marked as valid addressees. These lists are then used by the spammer in his/her own campaign, sold to other spammers, or both."+
    He recommends (and provides some how to's for) reporting the emails back up the food chain as the best thing we can do to help cauterize the bleeding. What I'm wondering now is if we can somehow (SpamSieve, maybe?) set our Macs to bounce anything from the offending servers, so that our address becomes 'dead' to them.
    I'm also pursuing this with MobileMe support—it seems that everything to do with MobileMe is now being handled outside of AppleCare, and the only path is online chatting with them. I'm also curious as to why my MobileMe account seems to be the only place these are surfacing; i.e., are my other accounts' servers already bouncing such messages, or am I just not seeing them? If I get anything helpful from MobileMe, I'll post it here.
