Email opens at startup

When I start or restart my MacBook Pro, the Mail app launches. I do not have "Open at Login" checked in the Dock, nor do I have Mail in the list of startup items in System Preferences.
Why is this happening, and what can I do about this?
Thanks,
Nicky

I'm assuming the startup items in system preferences you are referring to are the ones found under the accounts tab. If so, navigate to Macintosh HD > System > Library > StartupItems and see if the mail application is listed there. If it is an alias, delete it. If it is the actual application, move it to the applications folder. A similar folder can be found at Macintosh HD > Library > StartupItems. Again, make sure you're deleting an alias and not the actual program. To be safe, move the contents of those files to your desktop, then restart your computer and see if the Mail application still opens.

This is probabaly caused by the resume feature. When you log out, uncheck the box that appears.

  • Photoshop Elements opening on startup, despite having shut it down prior to closure.

I am running Elements 13 on a MacBook Air O SX Yosemite version 10.10.
After installation I encountered the following issues.
    1)       Elements 13 Organiser application opened ok and transferred my photos from iPhoto.
    2)       Elements 13 Application opened o.k
    3)       Elements 13 Editor opened o.k
But latterly, when opening Elements 13 application after 1 second, the screen reverts to another copy of Elements 13 Organiser.
I have attempted to check the Installed files, to check if they are in the right location, cannot see any apparent issues.
Additionally on Start-UP  Elements 13 starts automatically despite having quit the programme prior to closure.
Maybe if I completely re-installed Elements 13 the problems might go away.
Your earliest response would be much appreciated.

    Barbara Hi!
    Thanks for your quick response.
Sorry for the confusion regarding 2 Copies of Elements 13 Organiser.
What I intended to say is as follows:
On my Dock, after installing Elements 13, there are three adjacent Buttons for the Elements 13 Application from left to right:-
    1  Elements 13 Organiser
    2  Elements 13
    3  Elements 13 Editor
    MY ISSUES ARE:
    1  Elements Organiser  opens o.k.
    HOWEVER:
2 Elements 13      (To import work from the Elements Organiser),  the following happens:
This section of the application opens only briefly, (1.5 seconds,  headed appropriately  Elements 1  (But immediately reverts to a repeat copy of the Elements Organiser screen) which is activated by Button 1
    Button 3 Elements 13 Editor (opens) O.K.
P.S   Initially the application was working O.K
Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Kind Regards
    David A Hullin

the screen reverts to another copy of Elements 13 Organiser.
What do you mean by this? There is only one copy of Elements 13 organizer installed on any mac.
I would start by deleting the preferences and the saved application states for PSE:

  • Open firmware startup disk by default

I have an iMac which by default always goes to the open firmware startup disk screen. How do I get rid of this? I have tried zapping the PRAM, reinstalling the OS and a different hard drive. There are no problems w/ the functionality of the computer or the software and there are no symptoms to say that there is anything wrong w/ the computer. Just want to get rid of having to hit enter at the firmware startup disk screen every time I turn it on. Any suggestions please.

Mark, it appears that the defauly startup mode has been changed on your Mac.
Probably the easiest way to get back to normal is using a utility. I use the free utility OnyX. In OnyX go to Parameters>Login and at the bottom of the pane you can change your Mac's default startup mode.

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased.

  • Why can't I open all my emails, open attachments or send photos on my ipad anymore

Why can't I open all my emails, open attachments or send photos on my ipad anymore. Sometimes it takes awhile for an email to open, other times they open without any incident. I can't seem to be able to email any photos anymore.

It sounds like you have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them.
Pages 5 can not open Pages '08 files at all. You will need to Export the Pages '08 files to Word .doc/x or use Pages '09 to open the Pages '08 files and resave them.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 older Pages files can not be opened in previous Pages.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Note: Apple has removed over 90 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

How to keep finder in mountain lion from opening at startup.?

    Now you got me thinking....
One can set things up so Finder can be quit like any other application.  In Terminal:
    defaults write com.apple.finder QuitMenuItem 1
    Then relaunch the Finder.
I guess it might be possible to make a an Applescript or Automator application which runs at start up and quits the Finder.

  • Can't have multiple emails open any more??

Until the "upgrade" (which appears to be worse in every sense), you could have more than one email open at a time in tabs, and easily move between them.  This feature appears to have been removed and so you can now only have one email open at a time, which is a real nuisance!!  Is there a fix or setting change for this?

Perhaps this won't work for everyone? I just read Marshal's post:
"you CAN switch tabs back on, but not in settings - the button in there seems to do nothing. BUT, top right of the posts list is a dropdown menu called View - if you switch tabs on there, they come back."
As I recall there was no tabs option in my dropdown menu until I selected tabs in settings, so it might vary according to what device and/or browser is used.
Or maybe things have changed since ‎21-04-2015?

Right about the time the Apple logo shows up, both trays open.  Maybe 5 minutes later they close.

  • Finder window opens on startup - alternate cause

I just had this problem come up, and it took quite a lot of digging to find out why. I thought I would post the cause of my particular problem and it's solution as a reference for others who have been unsuccessful at stopping a finder window from loading at startup.
For reference, here's what I tried that didn't work:
    - Looked for the Finder listed in Preferences>Accounts>Login Items (wasn't there)
    - Deleted User>Library>Preferences>com.apple.Finder.plist, restarted the dock, restarted computer.
    - Changed background wallpaper (some said this worked for them)
I noticed in the Login Items something called "gstlauncherdaemon". As it turns out, this is part of the GimmeSomeTunes app. It causes the app to start when iTunes is launched. Well, apparently, it's also causing a Finder window to open on startup. You can disable this feature in the GimmeSomeTunes preferences. Personally I wanted to keep this feature, but couldn't stand the window. So I deleted the app and it's associated .plist file with AppZapper. The "gstlauncherdaemon" is no longer listed under Login Items and no window showed up on restart.
Hope this helps some who have been going mad over this like me. So if you've recently installed this app and are having a similar problem, it may very well be the culprit.

thanks for sharing this. I've seen a number of posts by people struggling (unsuccessfully) with a finder window opening at login. I don't know if any of them use GimmeSomeTunes but this is certainly something to consider.
