Email over wifi

Hi
I was in a pub recently with free wifi, so I browsed a few web pages no problem, then decided to check my sky email which is setup up in messaging on my N95-8Gb. The email application said to disconect and re-connect, which is a bit of a pain. So after disconnecting I tried to reconnect under the sky account in messaging but it wouldnt' work, perhaps because the pubs free wifi needs a login. This is the first time that I started thinking that perhaps the iphone is better...
Just wondered if I am doing something wrong or perhaps it really isn't that good ??
Cheers
Steve

It is because of the forced login page.  The iphone would have had the same issues so it's no better in this situation. Some of the free wi-fi's are also strictly internet only, email is blocked.
You will have to use web based email, such as skys website to check email though wi-fi that forces a log in page. If that is not a an option you will either have to use free wi-fi that doesn't force you to log in or pay your provider for a data tariff.
Was it Burnley weatherspons by any chance?

  • Exchange Emails over WiFi

For the last 3 days or so, I'm not able to get my exchange emails over wifi on my mac and iPhone 5 (mail app). The home wifi is working just fine as i'm able to connect and get all the other mails from gmail and hotmail but when it comes to my exchange account, I get an error 'can't connect due to network error'.
Although, I'm able to get my exchange emails over cellular data connection both on my mac and iPhone. Please suggest.

    Hi Razmee,
Thanks for the reply. I've tried that but my IT guys are a nocturnal bunch of grumps. It's not officially a work appliance, therefore not officially their problem. The fact I spend my own dollars to improve my efficiency and contactability is lost on them.
    Cheers

  • Can't get email over wifi at home, but can at work.

Okay, I think this is a problem with settings on my time capsule, but I can't figure out what. On my iPhone 5 and wife's iPad I can get email over the cellular network and over wifi at work. I can't get email over wifi at home, get a can't connect to server error. Also had a friend, who uses the same ISP, try with his android phone - same error, but works over wifi at his house. Since I can get email over cellular and wifi at work, I'm fairly confident that I have the server settings correct. Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    Rob

Was facing a similar issue with my friend's iPad (Latest one). Forcing the DNS Server to 8.8.8.8 (I think Google's DNS servers) fixes this issue. I had faced something similar on my iMac a long time back. Something a little strange about how Apple products do a DNS lookup? Not sure if it is an issue with the response time of the DNS servers as well..
In any case, the good news was changing it to 8.8.8.8 worked.. Luckily the iPad's network configuration tool allows you to navigate to the pane where you can see the DHCP supplied IP addresses and just go to the DNS field, delete what was present there and force it to this address.
The difficulty in coming to this conclusion was the fact that the browser works fine for all the sites we had tried. It is mostly the apps that had trouble, and the App store also was inconsistent in reporting details..

  • Email over wifi at work

I'm having some issues getting email to work on my iphone over wifi. When I am at home, everything works using my wireless network. When I'm at work however, Safari, Youtube and Google Maps work great (really fast actually)...however my email (which is set up for gmail) won't connect to the server.
Basically it stays stuck on "checking for mail". Sometimes it will stay there indefinitely...other times, after a few minutes, it will give a message about the connection to pop.gmail.com failing. It also won't send email. It stays stuck on "sending..." for a few minutes then says "Cannot Send Mail. The connection to the server smtp.gmail.com" failed."
The main difference between my wireless network at home and at work is that in order to use the internet on my iphone at all at work, i first have to go to an internal website in safari and enter a user name and password. I did ask one of our IT guys and he told me that wireless account is in the DMZ so it shouldn't be blocking any of the ports.
I don't get much (usually none at all) signal for at&t in my office. However, if I go somewhere that I get signal and turn off the wifi, everything works fine. It sort of sounds to me like it's trying to use EDGE just for email, but really I have no clue.
    Any ideas?

Man was I glad to find your post. I have been having the exact problem since yesterday using Network Sharing (wifi) from my imac to both my iphone and mbp. I thought it was a .mac problem because they have been having issues and .mac is the only mail account I have on iphone and mbp.
I had been using it successfully with all options checked in the advanced pane of the firewall settings, that is udp, logging, and stealth. So when I saw your post I turned off the firewall, sent a test mssg, and it worked. Turned firewall back on, sent another test mssg, and it still worked. Then it stopped working again! I posted in the ".mac on your desktop forum" earlier today and sent two mssgs to support.
I only recently learned of Network Sharing and was glad I wouldn't have to get an airport base station just to share wifi with my (then only) MBP. But with this and the fact that Network Sharing only allows WEP and not WPA I guess I will have to shell out the bucks.
Could Network sharing have a limitation of just one device? I never had a problem until I got the iPhone and started using it in addition to the MBP to receive wifi from my imac.
Basically it stays stuck on "checking for mail".
I get this with a home network where I'm using a
computer's built Airport as a wireless router (WiFi)
to share an ethernet internet connection (personal
web sharing). It turns out I can only get email on
the iPhone when the built-in Firewall is turned
off...not acceptable. I probably need to enable some
port, but enabling the available ports with the
built-in firewall does not help. Also found UDP
traffic cannot be blocked to get web access at all.
Might need a more sophisticated firewall, but will
probably just get a dedicated wireless router
(Airport) and then things should work ok. If that
    makes sense...

  • Can only send email over wifi?...

Anybody have any clues why this would happen? I get a message that the server is not responding if I try to send an email on the 3g network (Orange, France) but it works fine once hooked up to wifi. Sending an identical email at the same time with the computer over wifi goes through so it's not a timing issue.

Could be that you using your ISPs SMTP

  • IPhone 5 cannot send SMTP email over wifi

I am having trouble sending smtp email using port 587 over wifi, when the device has wifi off it sends just fine. The same issue occurs with my iPad as well. Issue occurs on multiple wifi connections. when i use a iPhone4 it connects and sends just find over wifi. Is this a known issue with 6.1 or iPhone 5 in general? the issue started about 2 months ago for both devices and there were no changes made to wifi network.

If your connecting from outside your mail server network you might need to authenticate
    Check your smtp settings
Have a look at your mail setting and compare to the device that's working

  • Can't send email over wifi

I can receive email over wi-fi, but not send. It works fine over 3G. It's a pop account.  Any help is appreciated.

Who is the email account provider for this email account and does the account have an authenticated SMTP server - authenticated with a user name and password as is required to check for any receive email?

  • Cannot receive email over WiFi on some networks with Z10

I am experiencing some issues with Z10s and recieving emails on certian wireless networks.
The phone connects to the networks properly and can access the internet through WiFi, but email messages do no flow when connecting to some wireless networks.
The phone is connected through a BES10 server and works poperly over the cellular data and some wireless networks, but it seems that certian networks it will not connect.  I run one of the networks that they cannot connect from.
Any insight on this issue would be great.
Also iphones, older Blackberries, andriod devices all work correctly on this wifi network.  It is only the z10 that does not.
    Thanks.

  • Can't access email over wifi with iPhone 5, iPod Touch, or iPad

All was working fine, then suddenly stopped.  Get message "Cannot Get Mail The connection to the server failed.", followed by "Cannot Get Mail The mail server "imap.yahoo.com" (or "imap,gmail.com) is not responding. Verify that you have entered the correct account info in Mail settings." message.  Email works on cellular connection on iPhone; not an option on iPad or iPod Touch.  I've tried verifying settings, resetting all devices, deleted and reinstalled email accounts (yahoo and gmail).  No luck.  Any suggestions?

I got this error for my Gmail, and Hotmail accounts but not for my Exchange account at work. It seems to be a problem on Apple's side since it affects multiple mail systems.

You need a DATA service enabled by your carrier to be able to send e-mail via thier network.  Do you have a data plan with your carrier ?  If so - is it enabled ?
Can you access internet thru your network (not wifi) ?

  • Bbm not working over wifi out of country. Same with email.

I am in the us and have turned off my data and mobile network and enabled wifi only. I was able to use bbm and email no problem over wifi but all of a sudden even though I'm fully connected to wifi with good signal, my bbm is not working at all and I'm. Not receiving emails. Please help!

The BlackBerry servers in Europe have been experiencing some problems over the last couple of days.  That's why you've been unable to connect to any of the BlackBerry services.
Glad I could clear things up for you.

  • Email won't send over wifi

i can send email fine over wifi, but when i send an email i have to turn wifi off before it will send. i dont get an error message or anything, it just says sending at the bottom of the screen with the little circle. the same thing is happening with my ipad. any ideas? ive done everything ive found on the internet but nothing has worked. it is my college's wifi and it worked fine in the spring if that's any help.

I'm having the same problem. However, the original post was not concise. Here's what I think they meant--
When using WiFi, receiving email works fine; however sending email does not. The outgoing item seems to hang in the Outbox and never goes. It's happened consistently to me on my new phone (5s). I can cause it to send by disabling WiFi for a moment. This is getting tedious.
I went into my mail configuration and checked my settings. They appear fine. The free version of Yahoo! doesn't not include the use of standard POP3 protocol and they've wired some sort of back door into the iPhone's mail client. You'd have to pay Yahoo! to get an SMTP server address and use normal POP3 protocols. I'm OK with this as it's obviously Yahoo's attempt to lure iPhone customers.
Meanwhile, I've deleted my Yahoo account configuration on my phone and set it up from scratch. That didn't work and I still have the same problem.
As a prediction, I'm thinking this is some sort of problem with the mail program's proprietary access to Yahoo's promotional mail service and not a configuration problem. This is not the user's fault, it's something else IMHO. I'm finding it odd that turning off my WiFi allows the mail to finally get sent. This last time, I had to turn off and turn back on Airport mode also.
    Very weird.

  • Can't send email over EDGE from hosted gmail domain. Works fine over WIFI

I'm trying to send email from my google apps hosted doman over EDGE network.
I'm using port 587, SSL, authentication: password.
Works fine over WIFI but edge network rejects it every time.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Ben

I'm running into the exact same issue. However, I am running my own mail server and not going through Gmail. On wi-fi, everything works fine. On Edge, I receive the error message indicating that the server is not responding, unable to connect to server, etc. I spoke to Apple support and they just walked me through the settings and said that they did not know what was wrong and suspected there is something wrong with the phone and wanted me to take it to the retail store to have them look at it and possibly send it in for repair. When I spoke to ATT they said that they are not experiencing any disruptions in the Edge network and that they also suspect it is the phone. I personally do not believe it is a defective phone. I upgraded my phone a couple of days ago the 1.1.2 firmware and within 24 hours later I started having this problem. I also tried setting up a connection to my .mac account and experienced the exact same thing there, so I know it is not isolated to my mail server. Funny thing is, I can access the internet over the Edge network just fine, so this has something to do with either the mail ports being blocked somehow within the Edge network or has to do something with the Mail Application on the iPhone which is not recognizing or not able to connect through the establised Edge connection. Maybe there is some sort of firewall on the iPhone that is blocking those ports? If anyone from Apple or ATT is listening, please investigate! I do not want to mail my phone in for repair when it is a perfectly good phone and may be able to be fixed with another firmware update.

Our CEO has an iPhone and an iPad. Everytime he is at the Baltimore Washington Airport (BWI) he is unable to send or recieve email over 4G or wifi. Everything else seems to work just fine over wifi or 4G LTE. Has anyone ever seen anything similar? is this malware?
Both devices are on Verizons 4G LTE network. Both devices do have some of the same APPS installed. Can this be a case of him connecting to a rogue wifi network of a hacker that may have installed malicious code on his devices when he connected? That would explain why only his devices have the same exact issue only at BWI airport.

Something similar I've experienced. I was once having to use a AT&T hotspot and the iPad simply refused to access my mail via the mail app. But if I used safari I could get it.  So the internet was working, but my supposition is that something with the hotspot's firewall messes with mail exchange.
next time your boss is at BWI, do you guys have a web interface? (for example if I wanted to access my work mail I could get them to set it up via the mail app and exchange, or I could go to a certain web address and access my mail that way via safari)
He could try using safari and the web interface if you have it.
If it's something in the hotspot's firewall I doubt it's anything that can be changed.
