I have been having a problem sending emails while on Wifi. I can receive fine. I do not have this problem if I turn 3G data back on.

Sending and receiving email use different servers and different settings. It sounds like you have only your carrier's outgoing (SMTP) server configured. You need to define a 2nd SMTP server connection on your phone to connect to your ISP's outgoing server. See: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1385

I have a slightly odd problem with my new iphone4 and the email app. It works fine with my POP3 account on 3G and my home router but not with my work network or BT openzone (available via O2). It works occasionally but 95% of the time it just times out and won't collecet email. Safari and the apps store work fine so the iphone is connecting to the network OK. Also I can't play youtube videos over these networks but can run other network services (safari, apps store, maps etc.) Youtube videos however play at home (via my router) or on 3G.
Is there a problem with the network drivers? Or the email app? Or am I missing something.

I had problems understanding this configuration too. My intention was to use the native email client but only with Wifi, not with packet data (GPRS, HSDPA etc...). When going into the config menu for >settings>incoming_mail I was also unable to indicate my own Wifi access point. Via trial and error I found the following workaround:
1) define a new Destination in the tools>settings>connection>destination.
2) Define your Wifi accesspoint there and check if it works via webbrowsing for instance.
3) In the Destination menu select is as default destination
4) In the email setup procedure use "default destination" for connecting to your server
5) test if this works by connecting to your email server
I don't know why the email connection setup feels/is buggy. I am under a t-mobile firmware version 11, waiting for update to 12.

Hi yes that works well when the new ipad hasn't been used. Trouble new one has been used for two months or more, has lots photos email etc etc. I am worried that these will go. When we did iPhone thru same process finished up with two of most things pics and emails. The emails alone were over 2 thousand and wife reluctant to delete them all. I would and just sort pics. Any other ideas

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Survey of intermittent email problems on edge

I have posted here before about my iphone having intermittent email problems. Usually when I am on the edge network it can sometimes take minutes before my phone downloads email. Sometimes it never downloads them at all. I have my account setup for imap and thought this may be do to the fact I have 100 email sub folders. However these are only for filing with no server side processing to file mail to individual folders. For the most part the issue is limited to edge network access but sometimes does happen when connected to wifi. Of the 8 or so people I have talked to who own iphones only 1 does not seem to have a problem like this. All 8 of us are on different mail servers also.
So I am curious how many others out there are regularly having issues pulling down email on your iphone? And if so is it limited to edge network access or when you are accessing your mail over wifi? Has anyone owned a blackberry and had issues like these?

I don't have a problem since I fixed it. I have 4 email accounts: 2 POP3, One IMAP and one Exchange configured as IMAP. I never have a problem retrieving email via EDGE or WiFi. Your problem description is too general to recommend a single solution, however.
Blackberrys cannot handle rich text email, so all messages are short and download quickly. On the iPhone if you have a message that contains HTML, graphics or MIME attachments they can be quite large - up to several megabytes. Clearly these will take a long time to download. The same email received by a Blackberry will only get the text version of the message, which is a couple of K.
If you are accessing an Exchange server and get "message could not be downloaded" errors, delete the account and recreate it using IMAP rather than Exchange as the server type.
If you are accessing a POP3 account and you have a primary computer somewhere powered on that periodically retrieves email the message will be removed from the server before your iPhone downloads it sometimes. The solution is to either shut down the mail client when away from the computer or change its options to leave messages on the server.
For IMAP you shouldn't see any of these problems, except that if you open a folder it retrieves messages in that folder AFTER the folder is opened; it doesn't sync folders automatically.

Had the same problem and trying to remember how I fixed it. Let's see...
Try this:
1) Settings > Messages > Receive At > Use your Apple ID for iMessage > make sure you are logged out from Apple / iTunes.
2) under "You can be reached for messages at:" > make sure only your phone number shows and no email address.
Hope that works, if not I just can't remember what else I did. However I got it working so that my tel number now shows to iMessage recipients instead of my email address.

Applecare Senior Advisor Txx Bxxx (I have his contact info in an email he just sent) just confirmed with me that the problem people are having with the App Store not loading is an apple issue with there servers, ITS NOT YOUR IPAD so don't go restoring it! It's not happening to everyone however but they are looking into it, its really hit or miss.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
This works for some users. Not sure why.
Go to Settings>General>Date and Time> Set Automatically>Off. Set the date ahead by about a year.Then see if you can connect to the store.

Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

My iPod Touch receives push email on my home network but is often unable to receive email via public WiFi. Does anyone know what is the reason for this?

Thanks for your reply. Why would the public WiFi sites block the port? It doesn't make sense.
No problem.
More than likely for security related purposes and if that isn't the case, I'm not entirely sure.
You would probably get a better answer by asking the people who are providing the Wifi. It could even be their ISP who is blocking the port.

I can receive email via 3g/edge and wifi . The problem is only sending email.
I have setup SMTP with login and password, with SSL, with pass auth and port 587
I try with port 465 and i have the same problem with 3g/edge , but no problem with wifi.
Any help please?

ok. i found the solution.
The problem is not in the iphone, the problem was DNS resolution in the server side.

I have a huge problem with an email...last night at 430am an email from my hotmail address was sent via my blackberry to my wifes email.....now she thinks it was intended for someone else and that I was intending to email someone else....how ever I did not send any emails at this time and was in fact asleep...I'm 99% sure it was an email I sent her awhile back and somehow was just sent and delivered days later. But I need to prove it...how can I trace it...its not in my blackberry messages sent folder...I really need to somehow prove its an older email and I did not send it..well at least not at 430am last night...please if anyone knows how I can trace this...do I go through blackberry...hotmail....verizon...is it possible...

did you really look at the headers of the email that your wife received ?
there are several lines, certainly more than 30.
one indicates the server that received the email from your device, then 5 or 6 from one server to another, then the 2 last ones should be the ones on the email provider of your wife.

Problem getting WiFi to accept my password

Hey All. Just got my new Kin TwoM tonight! Yay. Like someone else said, I had to call Verizon to get it activated. Wouldn't work online. 1st Tech Support couldn't get it programmed manually, but Tier II got it programmed. That took a good 30 minutes. Now I'm trying to get WiFi working. I turned on Wifi and it's detecting my home network, but it won't recognize my password. Keeps saying it's wrong. Now it's an easy password for me to remember, but I figured I better double check my password that I have written down and filed away, and I do have the correct password. It's all numeric, and I thought maybe I was using the letter O instead of a zero, but the zero is up in the top row with all the numbers so that's not the problem. I then went into my router to make sure I didn't go and change the password at some point, but the password is what I've had it set to for years and what I'm trying to get the phone to accept. Anyone else have a problem getting WiFi to accept the password? My router is a Dlink. The phone is showing it as WEP, so I thought maybe there's a problem with the phone and WEP and maybe I should try another encryption. Or do I have to allow access in my router or something?. I went in and disabled the password on my router and the Kin was able to connect fine. I enabled the password again, re-entered it on my phone and it won't connect with the password. Any other ideas? Oh this is frustrating. I finally got my phone wifi to connect to my home network once by manually adding my network, but I couldn't seem to get it connected again when I try the same way. When I was connected, I still couldn't open any webpages, but it did download my email. BUT...it wouldn't open any email unless it was text only. I was wondering if it was because I turned off Data Services in my Verizon account. I thought you had to do that so that you wouldn't accidentally connect to 3G when there was no WiFi. I did try to renew my IP, but no change. I tried manually connecting to my home network another 10 times or so, and I finally got it to connect again, and I can now access the internet. The wifi on this phone must be VERY buggy. That's a real dissapointment since the phone has so many great features. I suppose it is possible that my phone has an faulty Wifi. I'll see if I have problems connecting to wifi elsewhere. I did try at work yesterday and couldn't get connected, but I wasn't sure how good the wifi was at work so I didn't really worry about that. I am NOT going to mess with the wifi connection to my home network now that I finally got it connected. Hopefully after I turn off wifi, it will be able to reconnect the next time I turn it on. One can hope anyway!

Email problems with BB synched via BES. No email notifications and can't send replies.

This isn't a question, but more of a public service announcement for those like myself that manage to screw up their email settings. I recently had problems with my email in that I would not get audible or visual notifications of new email and I couldn't send replies although I could forward and create new emails. The problem is that I am using Desktop Manager on two PCs and only one is configured to access my corporate email account, the one that is redirected to the BB. The default settings of my Desktop Manager installation was to synchronize the device date and time automatically when connected to the PC. Connecting my BB to my home machine would cause the email problems. I had to wipe and reactivate to fix my problems.
So, if you want to use the BB on two PCs and one is not configured for the email account going to the phone... disable the auto synchronization option BEFORE connecting the device to that machine and launching Desktop Manager. It would also be nice if the Desktop Manager installer had an option to install on a PC that is used for backup/recovery and application loading only. The installer had two options IIRC and your choice was that the BB is used with BES or with a personal email account.

Internally, your invites are processed by the server.
If an outside sends a new invite to you, the server doesn't know about it until you add the event to your calendar app.
You'll find settings in Mail and Calendar apps (depending on client OS) to automatically add invites to the Calendar.
So to sum it up.
Internal users, processed in real-time directly by the server
External invites, must be processed by the client app, and depending on OS/Settings, could require manually adding or acknowleding. Also.. in 10.7/10.8 you will see an inbox tray in the Calendar app, your invites may show up there (and you'll need to click to ack)

Sounds like the device was dropped at some point and damaged as a result.
Take it to Apple for evaluation and a replacement.
