Email question and a thought

I have (lately) begun my day by clearing all messages off the 3 servers I use for email after I'm sure I have downloaded everything locally to my main desktop computer. I use the get info option at the bottom of the mailbox pane in Apple Mail to clear all messages off the servers. I check the titles of each email that I might want to leave there and delete the rest. This seems to make email checking from the iPhone when I'm on the road go much quicker. If I have everything I want downloaded locally is there any risk in doing this manually. I have certain accounts where the messages are left on the server for varying amounts of time because I may be on the road for a week and want them when I return.
Also since I get email on three devices, my iPhone, my iMac and my MacBook, how does each device "know" that a particular email hasn't yet been downloaded to it. Is the previous header info on each email stored on each device and does it then compare what it has to what it gets and either does or does not download the message? Or is this info on each server itself.
Thanks for your help.

As with any other email client used to access a POP account, the iPhone's email client includes a setting for a POP account for when to remove downloaded messages from the server. In your situation, you want this to be Never for the account settings on the iPhone. Go to Setting > Mail. Select the POP account and then the Advanced button. Under Settings at Delete From Server, select Never. This must be done for each POP account - there is not a universal setting for all POP accounts if you are accessing more than one.
This information is not stored on the server for the account and is based on the message. With the Mail application on your Mac, each POP account has a file named messageuidsalreadydownloaded which is available in the POP account named folder for each POP account at the Finder level at Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder.
There must be something similar on the iPhone but there is no manual way to access such a file on the iPhone.

  • Got my apple TV TODAY! few questions and my thoughts

After watching the keynote and seeing the new itunes rental system i decided to go out and buy the appletv... I wanted to jump the gun and get it before the update comes out... Anyways, few questions
    1) I don't think this is possible but is there anyway to stream a DVD playing in my computer to apple TV? I understand Apple TV uses quicktime, and quicktime can't play DVD's so I am thinking it is not possible.. Am i correct? I really hope I am wrong on this one though ahaha.. I know i can rip then convert but that takes way too much time...
    2) I have read conflicting answers to my next question, the apple support article states that you can already stream rentals from itunes to the appletv but that is not possible yet.. Am i correct? just want to make sure my appletv isn't messed up... According to the apple website the unit needs the upgrade so I assume I am right here too...
    3) last, anything else i need to know or that you might think i would find useful when it comes to appletv??
I love apple and have been a long time apple user... Appletv didn't float my boat at first and was a pretty lame and expensive device i though... HOWEVER, take 2 seems to be a very nice step in the right direction.. FIRST, no monthly subscription fees like netflix and tivo while still being able to rent and pay as you go without using a computer (This netflix feature is coming late 2008 when their box releases).. I think i am going to love the new integration with web gallery!
There are still some features i would like to see in apple TV and i will be submitting feedback about them ocne the update releases, but this step and price drop warrants a purchase imo..

I had the same idea... I felt that 40 GB would be plenty especially b/c i plan to use it mostly for rentals... But it also gives me "Insurance" incase the appletv becomes huge after the update and apple decides to release a new generation in the next year or so or if i decide i actually do need more memory.. I won't feel as bad buying it knowing i only spent $229 on this one.. but i would be pretty upset with myself if i purchased the big model and never used the memory or if apple released a new generation in the next year....
BTW, if you purchase it at a reseller, make sure you take an apple add with you.. they may not have rolled the price back.. Circuit City was like that, i had to show the apple home page to get it for 229

  • HT204053 I just got my new iPhone and I had a iPod that had about $40 on it and I can't remember the answer to my security questions and whenever I send the email it never comes. So I was wondering if there was any way that I could make a new apple I'd an

I just got my new iphone and I gave my phone the same apple ID as my iPod. Then I added $40 to my iTunes thinking that I could buy songs freely. When I went to go buy an album it said that I needed to answer some security questions to complete the purchase. So I clicked yes and it brought me to two questions that I totally forgot the answers to so I hit the link that said if you forgot your answers click here. I clicked it and it brought me to this website that you see all your information about your apple ID. So I went to privacy and security and the same two questions were there. I tried and didn't succeed. I even sent myself the email and I have been trying this for days on end and still never received any emails about those questions. So I thought what if I create a new apple ID then mabe I could transfer ONLY the money over, is this possible??  Because I would hate to see forty dollars go to total waste.

Funds cannot be transferred from one Apple ID account to another.

  • Change security questions and email.

I have two problems: First, I can't remember my two security questions. I enter what I thought would be the correct answers and it is telling me it's not. Second, my step daughter "high-jacked" the account and changed all the email addresses to her, with the exception of the login name. I was able to get in, change the password, and delete her information. However when I went to buy something it said that because I was on a new computer I had to answer security questions. In order to reset my security questions it only gives me the option to send it to be changed to HER email address, which I obviously don't want to do.
Other pertinent information: I have had the account since 2008, back when I was the only one with an ipod. It's set up for my name, address, phone, email login, and credit card. She no longer lives with us, we have no contact with her, she does have an iPhone now, and I can see from the history she has been downloading many songs and apps since I last logged in.
All I want to do is be able to make purchases again and no longer want HER email to be where they resend my security questions, then allowing her to get back in and change everything back. Thank you!

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions. To do this, click here and pick a method; if that page doesn't list one for your country or you're unable to call, fill out and submit this form.
Once they've done that, you can change the rescue email address.

  • I have no "Rescue email" contact in order to reset my security questions and I don't believe I ever answered any security questions when I created my Apple ID for Itunes.  Someone kindly sent me Apple support link but to no avail!  Please Help me!

I have no "Rescue email" contact in order to reset my security questions!!  I've been trying now for 4 days to contact Apple/Itunes but I only get sent answers from a support team that say they cannot help me with my problem!!
The thing is that I can't ever remember answering any security questions and without a rescue email, I'm unable to reset them or even set them for the first time!!
I can't believe that no-one from Apple/Itunes can help me with this simple problem but unfortunately that is the case - Incredible, isn't it!!!
Would anyone know how I could solve this problem online???   Because each time I sign into Itunes, the same security questions reappear and reappear and reappear.  In fact I've got to the point where I feel like uninstalling Itunes and downloading an alternative.
    Many thanks

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; this can be done by clicking here and picking a method, or if your country isn't listed, filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

The Three Best Alternatives for Security Questions and Rescue Mail
    Try # 2
       1. Use Apple's Express Lane.
Go to https://expresslane.apple.com ; click 'See all products and services' at the
bottom of the page. In the next page click 'More Products and Services, then
'Apple ID'. In the next page select 'Other Apple ID Topics' then 'Forgotten Apple
ID security questions' and click 'Continue'. Please be patient waiting for the return
phone call. It will come in time depending on how heavily the servers are being hit.
    2.  Call Apple Support in your country: Customer Service: Contact Apple support.
    3.  Rescue email address and how to reset Apple ID security questions.
A substitute for using the security questions is to use 2-step verification:

I pressed where it says for them to email you your answers but I haven't gotten an email.  Is there another way to change or get the answers for the security questions?

If the email hasn't arrived after a few hours and isn't in a spam filter, you need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; this can be done by phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, or clicking here and picking a method, or if your country isn't listed in either article, filling out and submitting this form.

  • I forgot all of the answers to my security questions and when I set up my apple id I did not add a rescue email, I recently got a new iphone and I cannot purchase anything on it because it asks me to answer my security questions which i can't reset, help!

I forgot all of the answers to my security questions and when I set up my apple id I did not add a rescue email, I recently got a new iphone and I cannot purchase anything on it because it asks me to answer my security questions which i can't reset because I do not have a rescue email. what do I do?

this does not help. I have forgotten ALL of the answers to my security questions. I can NOT reset the answers to my security questions without answering two of the three security questions. The other way to reset the answers to these questions is for apple to send me an email on my rescue email addres which I DO NOT HAVE.

  • HT5312 I don`t remember setting up security questions and if i did i don`t remember the answers (all of a sudden I am now asked to answer security questions when I have never been asked in the past???) I have no rescue email either

I have been buying itunes for about a year and a half with no trouble and within the past month everytime I tried to buy music it keeps asking me for answers to security questions that I do not know the answers to as I don't even remember doing this when i started with itunes - AND I won't have an alternate recovery email as I only have one email.
I have attempted three times now to go through apple support to no avail as i keep giving them my phone number - no one calls (cause I am home each time the date I check off) and then I get an email saying we tried to contact you but there was no answer! very strange!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can only get reset info sent to a rescue email addres, which is not the same thing as an alternate email address - they are different settings/addresses on an account. If you don't have a rescue email address (and you can't add one without being able to answer 2 of your questions) then see if the instructions on this user tip helps : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4551

If you don't have a rescue email address then you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple to get the questions reset.
Contacting Apple about account security : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699
When they've been reset you can use the steps half-way down the HT5312 page that you posted from to add a rescue email address for potential future use

  • I send a reset for security question and do not receive an email

please help much appreciated for help.

You've checked the spam folder as well as the inbox on your rescue email account, and you've tried clicking the reset link again ?
If you can't find the email then you will have to contact Support in your country to get the questions reset.
Contacting Apple about account security : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699
If your country isn't on that page then try this form and explain and see what they reply with : https://ssl.apple.com/emea/support/itunes/contact.html
When they've been reset you could check that you rescue email address is spelt correctly in case you need it in the future : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5620
Or, if it's available in your country, you could change to 2-step verification : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5570
