Email rebuild

I have just got around to putting tiger on my laptop and opened up email and had two problems.
1) most of my imported "in" emails gave " has not been downloaded from the server. you need to take this account online in order to download it" My email prefs are to delete from the server now so how do I get them.
2) I accidentally hit rebuild on one of the mailboxes and all the files disappeared Where have they gone

I was worried about updating my laptop from 10.3.10 due to previous nightmare with tower. this time I installed from disk without using easy install and followed thru installation. The first thing I opened was mail and followed the option of importing my old emails. this seemed ok until I opened one of the account inboxs to read one only for it to tell me I needed to log on to server to retrieve it again( problem 1 as stated above). thought "rebuild" seemed a logical step( problem 2 as above) Since last posting I have updated 10.4.6(as supplied on disk) to 10.4.10 and this has made no difference (the crazy thing is the only reason I put tiger on[old 10.3.10 was fine]was so I could use newer isync to connect to internet via sony ericsson w850i for when I am working away. Luckily, my outbox is still intact. All the probs. I have seen in this brilliant forum relating to similar only seem to trouble inboxs. It is nice to know people don't only watch out for the sports on Saturdays.

I suggest you use table alias every time:
The alias is specified in the FROM clause after each table name.
Table aliases make your queries more readable.
Then gather statistics your tables:

Modifying local.cf

I'm trying to add whitelisting to our spamassassin config file which should be an easy task. What's happening instead is everytime anything is added to the local.cf file on our 10.5.7 server such as
+whitelist_from *serverexample.com.au+
I get:
May 23 10:30:20 ods1 ctl_cyrusdb[54035]: DBERROR db4: unable to join the environment
May 23 10:30:31 ods1 deliver[54062]: connect(/Volumes/X-SERVE Mail RAID/mail/imap/socket/lmtp) failed: Connection refused
May 23 10:30:34 ods1 deliver[54068]: connect(/Volumes/X-SERVE Mail RAID/mail/imap/socket/lmtp) failed: Connection refused
Its all fixed once I remove the line and rebuild the mail database.
There's no typos in the information I'm adding as its a cut and paste direct from our 10.4.11 local.cf file that I modified for our previous mail server.
Permissions on the file are fine.
Anyone know a work around to adding blacklist and whitelist information or having similar issues?

Sorry, my typo on here with the missing @. Typed the sos on here when I was unable to get mail working after another try just using
whitelist_from *@server.com
Prior to making the local.cf changes there were no unusual errors in the mail access or mail logs and it all worked fine. After modifications and restarting the database, only errors. Three times I've made those modifications and three times the database has corrupted when the mail was restarted. Making modifications through ServerAdmin app works fine, unfortunately white & blacklists can't be done in there.
The last time I had to rebuild, delete all queued emails, rebuild again then do
+sudo postsuper -r ALL+
to get the mail to startup again. Almost like spamassassin is corrupting messages its sending through to the queue.
This is from a standard 10.5.7 install, no upgraded spamassassin or postfix etc. The only non-standard item is that the mail database and store and on a raid volume instead of in /var

ps. I'd like to thank you for your posts on here. They've been the saving grace on many of the osx server issues I've had over the past few years and many weekend nightmares have ended well because of them.

Was unable to see that attachments were attached on emails I had received. On one of the hlep things it said to rebuild so I did no everything is gone. Not very coputer savy so I know I screwed up something. The email on my iPhone works fine. Help

I was having trouble with my eamil. Just receiving it on my computer. I could see it and get it on my iphone fine. Then I could not see that people had sent me attachments. It was noted in the email but no sign on the letter that one was attached. So looking in the help section I was told to rebuild. Now I can't get any email at all. The email still works on my iPhone. I know I have done something stupid but I don't know how to fix it. Needless to say I am not computer savy at all.

There is nothing wrong with the OS update.
Delete ALL your email accounts.
Restart Playbook
Put the accounts back and ensure they are all set with PUSH ON. Manual (push off) will burn battery.
Similarly delete your wifi connections and add back when required.
Turn off wifi is not connected to wifi.
Any "hunting for connection" in email or wifi will burn up battery.

I can receive email but now can't send or reply-rebuild Macmail? Need help

I receive email ok but all of a sudden I cannot send email or reply to email using Mac Mail. The error message says----
Message could not be delivered and will remain in outbox,
The sender address xxx@xxx was rejected by the server.
Someone said to delete macmail program and then rebuild it.
How do I save my mail in my mailboxes and special folders and address book before deleting current macmail program?

Email links in Notebook after rebuild

I have been using Circus Ponies' Notebook for a while and have numerous links to emails scattered throughout the notebooks. I create them by dragging the header line from mail.app to the insertion point on the notebook page. This creates a link which, if clicked, will open the original email in Mail.
This works well, but I am concerned as to what would happen if I had to rebuild my email account or one or more mailboxes. I am using one email account in mail.app and it is a MobileMe IMAP account.
Any ideas what would happen to all those links if I had to rebuild?

Okay here's the deal. Acrobat Mac has never ever brought over links created in Word Mac.
Adobe claims there are no "hooks" in the Mac Version of Office Mac to allow creation of URL links on the fly.
Adobe Blames Apple and Microsoft. Microsoft blames Acrobat.
None of the companies will sit down together in one room and fix the %^&$ problem.
However you can get links from a Word Document into a PDF by any of the following methods.
Take the word Document unedited to a PC version of Word and create the PDF. The links will be hot.
Open the Document in Apple Pages the links will be hot. Export back to word format. The links will be hot. Make the PDF word Mac the links will be hot. Or while in pages create the PDF. Links will be Hot.
By opening the word document in Pages and the links being hot indicates the hooks in Office for links.
This proves that Office is functioning correctly. Okay after 15 years Adobe has proof its an issue with Acrobat Mac. Now get off your fat backside and fix it.
By going to Pages and the links work is proof the the hooks are there. And by not changing a thing and opening in Office2010 PC and the links are active when a PDF is made, also indicates the Word Mac document has the hooks.
The code for Office2010 PC and Office2011 Mac are identical so far as creating a document. There are some features not available in the Mac version that is in PC and the reverse is also true. and there are difference keyboard short cuts and command name in menus and on the menu bars and ribbon.
The problem is squarely Adobes Fault and they absolutely refuse to fix it else it would have been fixed 15 years ago, if they would not have been so stubborn and went ahead and fixed the problem.

Rebuild Mailbox - deleted all my emails

Hello all - I'm desperately hoping you can help me.
I have seemingly lost three years of archived emails that were stored 'On My Mac' in Mail.app
I have a mailbox (stored 'On My Mac') called Archive where I store all my read emails. I selected this mailbox and clicked 'Rebuild' in the Mailbox menu.
All my emails then disappeared.
I cannot find them anywhere on my hard drive. They also don't seem to have been backed up in my (twice weekly) Time Machine backups.
Any help you can give me will be hugely appreciated.

you do see that the structure inside ~/Library/Mail/V2/Mailboxes/ is the same as the folders inside Apple Mail?
look for the same folder inside the Library where your email disapeard and your going to see a folder with a name like this D9260F12-B465-4B3C-BFEB-601A12FB012C.noindex edit the name of the folder by taking off .noindex you should have something like this D9260F12-B465-4B3C-BFEB-601A12FB012C after that rebuild the folder, if done right you will see all the email inside that folder.

Rebuild Mailbox Lost Emails HELP

I inadvertently clicked Rebuild Mailbox for the main INBOX of one of my POP accounts, and have lost over 8,000 important emails. I saw a few posts by others who had experienced this, but no answers that were helpful. Three attempts to restore this from Time Machine have failed, though restoration of the OTHER main POP Account's lost mail seems to have succeeded.
Really? A simple command in a menu with no explanation or warning dialogue that you are going to lose major files?
I have gone into the hidden user Library and find an entry for that Inbox, but nothing within the folder makes any sense to me at all. A complicated string of characters as a folder-name (and, no, there are no .noindex extensions anywhere) with subfolders just consisting of many folders designated by single integers.
Please help.

I'll try and explain what I did more clearly. Following advice elsewhere I created a duplicate account of one which already existed and which I had been using. I named the account differently but it was a second account of an email account I was already using. The reason I did this was to try to set it up so that I could request a read receipt on an email to one person and I read on another site that this was how to do it. Upon finding that this made no difference and without having written, send or received any emails using the new duplicate account I decided to delete it.
Once I had deleted it I went to my email to find that the emails I had previously sent and received using the original account with the same email address had all disappeared.
I checked using finder for them and I can't see them.
I am new to using a mac so bare with me.

How to rebuild email database?

Server Admin has an option, but I would download mailbfr.
If you install mailbfr:
You can run rebuild a single user
sudo mailbfr -m user
Or reconstruct the entire database (often necessary when single user rebuild doesn't solve)
sudo mailbfr -f

"Rebuild" wiped out my emails!!!

After running the Rebuild process, my Inbox for my POP telus account is now blank. I had over 1400 messages in that mailbox before I ran Rebuild.
What can I do to get my emails back?

Email disappearing after rebuilding mailbox

I rebuilt a mailbox that had about 200 messages in it, and over 1/2 disappeared.
This was not because of upgrading from 10.3, I've been running 10.4 since it came out and have all the updates installed.
This is not one of my Inboxes, but a local mailbox that I created for sorting/storing messages.
I can go to Library->Mail->Mailbox->Messages folder and see all the messages there. If I double click one, I can view the message.
I've searched the forums here and tried the following that has been suggested for similar problems, but it hasn't worked:
1. Repair permissions w/ Disk Utility
2. Pull the mailbox itself to the desktop & import again (several times, after re-trying other points listed here).
3. Delete the Envelope Index & allow mail to import on it's own. (I didn't see an Envelope Journal).
4. View the permissions of a message in the folder that I can't import vs. one that I can view. They are exact.
5. Rebuild the mailbox from within mail.
The only thing I haven't done is completely reinstall Mail or delete the Library->Preferences->Mail plist. Mainly b/c I've got a lot of email addresses that I monitor, and that would be a major pain, that I don't want to undertake if there's any other option available.
What else do I need to try to get these messages back in?

i love all things apple, and i have done for twenty years.
but with respect, your build of mail 2.0 really could be a lot better.
moving my mail from 1.0 on an ibook g3 running os X 10.3.9, over to mail 2.0 on an intel macbook 1.83 running os X 10.4.7 has been a nightmare.
the discussion boards of many mac sites feature countless cases of people making the move from 1.0 to 2.0, with all their e-mails disappearing.
having spent two weeks reading the knowledge forums, and learning about emailchemy, plus all the complications which, even with that third party program, still exist in moving one's mail over from version 1.0 over to 2.0, are both massive and horrendous.
and that's for me, who has twenty years of finding my way around mac bugs.
but this one is the most difficult i've ever seen, as well as being one of the most widespread problems in a FULL VERSION RELEASE of an apple program, which apple has done nothing to resolve during the six months in which this problem has been widespread in the mac community worldwide.
so thank god for DAVID GIMENO GOST !
i'm amazed that apple still hasn't come up with a patch for moving mail from 1.0 to 2.0.
even now, while i've finally got all my mail back today, 95% is showing as unread, due to the last obstacles in the process, which i can no longer face solving.
i've also lost hundreds of red mail flags during the transfer :o(.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, guys:
we shouldn't need to be buying third party software to move our e-mails from apple mail 1.0 up to apple mail 2.0, and even then be faced by massive hurdles to overcome, which take weeks for someone who at least has SOME idea of what he's doing.
i pity all the people who read the numerous forum posts about how difficult it is to transfer their mail from 1.0 to 2.0, and simply give up on the spot, and have to start their e-mail history TODAY, unable to access their previous e-mail again - potentially now for ever.
because the ironic joke is that we can't even have an access copy of mail 1.0 on our macs to read our old e-mails, unless we hack that program out of the 10.3 cd installation set, which the gurus on your own web site recommend us NOT to do !
so what are we supposed to do, to access our old e-mail, which we can't open, even though YES, it is in our mail folder, and YES, we did full rebuilds of every mail folder, and YES, we trashed our mail preferences first.
e-mail is now at the very center of the average mac user's digital life.
a user's most important program should not require countless hours scrolling through the astonishing number of problems within mail 2.0, which the apple.com discussion boards evidence, with new problems being added every day.
please sort this out, and build a patch, for the sanity of the many people who love apple, but who are unable to access any of their old e-mails.
because i wouldn't wish the last fortnight on anyone else.

What do I do when the rebuild function doesn't work on my email? It still saying I have 108 emails left on one of my accounts even though there are no emails being shown...

I have Lion 10.7.5 and it says that I still have 108 emails on one of my accounts (Microsoft outlook live) even though there aren't any email being shown. And when I try to access my account on the Outlook Web App, there aren't any emails there either. I've tried the rebuild function and it doesn't do anything...what's my next move?

It's rude, obviously I know now not to do something like download something like that to my computer. It's not the difficult to figure out, and obviously I'm suffering the consequences for it now. So are you planning on helping me? Or should I not reply to your next reply if it has the word "crap" in it? I'm sure this whole discussion board was created to be used in a professional way, which is how I would like to keep my responses.

Rebuild in Outlook exchange email on iMac

I am getting the following pop up message in my Outlook on my iMac where I receive and send my work exchange emails:
"There is a problem with the Office database. To use the database, you must rebuild it using the Database Utility. The Office database stores
your personal information, such as the Scrapbook and Outlook messages and contacts. To continue, click Rebuild. After the rebuilding process is complete, close the Database Utility. Then the database will be available for your Office applications."
I have the choice of clicking "cancel" and then Outlook closes. Or I can click "Rebuild" but I'm afraid I will loose my work emails and work contact list in Outlook. Could this problem possibly be initiated by my company?
