Email Trouble post Yosemite Install
Hi, since installing the latest Yosemite my email accounts on my mac mobcap pro have stopped working, I've reinstalled etc, but outgoing mail just sits in out box, any ideas or is there a setting that needs to be readjusted since installation.
Incomming email arrives, outgoing just sitsThanks
I am totally in agreement with you. I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Yosemite on the recommendation of a "genius" at the genius bar and have had nothing but trouble ever since. I do not have a business but just want to be able to normally send email. The SMTP outgoing mail is the culprit. It works part of the time and then all of a sudden it won't work. I have spent endless hours with my service provider, I have combed the internet "helpers" out there who say to do this and that and for the most part, the mail just hangs in the outbox. My latest combination was to click using the TLS Certificate "Apple" option as well as not checking the "allow insecure authentication" along with the 465 port using SSL. Problem is I don't know how long the mail will be able to go through with these preferences checked. All of this frustration should not have to be. What was wrong with the old email? It worked fine. Seems like Yosemite email should be functional before touting this new system. I am a believer in Apple, thinking that they are the best of the best, but I'm losing my faith. When folks pay more for an great computer they should expect it to work. I am so disappointed.

MacBook pro suddenlink email issues after yosemite install.
After installing yosemite on my 15" MacBook Pro I have had issues with my suddenlink email account. I went through all the settings yesterday with a sudden link representative and did find a port was wrong and corrected that on my outgoing server. However I never could update my password successfully using Preferences, Account, Password. It would let me save it, but would not actually change it, as confirmed by the connection doctor. So reading some other threads here I went to my provider and changed my password there, to make sure everything was correct. I updated the passwords on my iPhone and iPad, and both accounts are working correctly (they always have been working properly). I deleted the sudden link account from my MacBook, and reinstalled it with the correct new password, it was working fine all day yesterday and then this morning when I got back on my MacBook, I have the triangle exclamation point symbol next the sudden link account again. Tried re-entering the password via preferences tab and no luck, verified with connection doctor that I couldn't connect, it gave me the same error, verify password and username is correct. I deleted and re-installed with correct password, and it works again. Any suggestions as to why this is happening?
There's a sequence of steps in the support article for each of several possible scenarios of a connection failure in Mail. Please describe in detail what happened when you followed the applicable sequence all the way to the very end, without skipping any of the steps. That's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem.

Date problem post Yosemite install
i have been using excel for my accounts for several years but since upgrading to Yosemite the VBA date function does not seem to work as it used too
my excel version is 14.4.5
entering into sheet1 a1 the value 03/11/2014 (UK Date format)
sub play()
MsgBox (Date)
MsgBox Range("a1")
MsgBox Range("a1").Value2
End Sub
message box date returns 03/11
message box range returns 03/11
message box range... Value2 returns 41946
on the previous mac version i would get the full date 03/11/14 apart from the last instance
What I'm i doing wrong?
Thank youHi Bernie
Thanks for the reply, indeed changing the region setting to USA gives a full date function in US format
However changing region back to UK date will display only dd/mm
albeit if i enter MsgBox Day(Date) & ("/") & Month(Date) & ("/") & Year(Date)
I get the full dd/mm/yy
Yes i can get the answer by recoding and reformatting the print reports i just can't understand why date does not dd/mm/yy in UK region
Again thanks for your time, if you get chance other ideas would be welcome -
My computer is running slow after Yosemite install -but in the Mail program, when I open an email and then open the attachment -all is good -when I close the attachment the Mail program goes away, and I have to reopen it in my Dock -every time.
I tried this, but no luck. I went to Previous System>Users. There is nothing inside the "Users" folder, so I hit a dead end.
I can find my new e-mails -- those that came in since I re-installed the system -- in my NEW system (which I did to see if I was correctly understanding the advice), by going to Users>Home>Library>Mail>POP account name>Inbox.
Let me add a new question: I am running PhotoShop C3. It opens OK, and I can use it, but when it opens I get this message: "One or more files for Adobe Application Support folder are missing. Please re-run the PhotoShop installer."
I don't like re-installing working programs if I can avoid it, because it always seems to lead to other issues. Any idea what files are missing, and where it/they might be in the Previous System folder?
thanks

Real trouble trying to install Catalyst Legacy
I'm kind of in trouble trying to install catalyst-total-hd234k package from the AUR
using yaourt to achieve this, enabled the xorg112 package to downgrade, tried pacman directly and makepkg, same result
It asks a lot of dependencies conflicting with catalyst drivers, so I accept to remove before downgrading to 1.12
It goes through like if nothing was up after downgrading, package installs without any error
Following the AMD Catalyst wiki page in here leads me to have a black screen after reboot
EDIT 2: Process of reproducing the problem I'm facing
- I enable the xorg112 repository on top of every other in /etc/pacman.conf
- Downgrade xorg with
# pacman -S xorg

let me paste form the grill:
I'm pretty sure that you didn't update catalyst-total-hd234k to version 13.1-28, because there I fixed conflict with ati-dri.
Comment by doblerone (2014-12-17 19:15)
During the last update, apparently there are some conflicts between catalyst-libgl and catalyst-total-hd234k. The suggestion is to remove catalyst-total-hd234k.
Comment by Vi0L0 (2014-12-18 08:14)
You are probably using libva-xvba-drivers which from yesterday depend on catalyst-libgl, i will add it to provides array after getting back home
Comment by Vi0L0 (2014-12-18 21:50)
13.1-29:
- added catalyst-libgl, opencl-catalyst, lib32-catalyst-libgl and lib32-opencl-catalyst into provides array to satisfy libva-xvba-driver (and maybe other that will come in the future) deps;
- added linux 3.18 support (i cannot test it actually, i can see it compiles fine though)
Comment by K3pler (2015-01-05 12:43)
Planning to replace my ultra outdated x1950pro for a less outdated hd3870 lol.
And using this driver i probably need to downgrade xorg-server from 1.16 to 1.12 from the aur, right???
Thanks for your work VioLO

Building fglrx module for 3.17.6-1-ARCH kernel ...
Ok.
Add nomodeset to your kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst , ie.:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/sda1 ro nomodeset
You can use the tool 'aticonfig' to generate an xorg.conf file.
--------------------- ^^^^^^^^^ --------------------------------
fglrx was added into /etc/modules-load.d/catalyst.conf
atieventsd (needs acpid pkg) on systemd:
systemctl enable atieventsd
systemctl start atieventsd
For more info and troubleshooting visit:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI_Catalyst
ATTENTION!
To enable 'automatic re-compilation while system shutdown/reboot'
testing feature run these commands as root:
systemctl enable catalyst-hook
systemctl start catalyst-hook

- Then, I re-enable catalyst-hook (and optionally atieventsd) to be able to build modules at end and start of pc
$ sudo systemctl disable catalyst-hook
Removed symlink /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/catalyst-hook.service.
$ sudo systemctl disable atieventsd
Removed symlink /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/atieventsd.service.
$ sudo systemctl enable catalyst-hook
Created symlink from /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/catalyst-hook.service to /usr/lib/systemd/system/catalyst-hook.service.
$ sudo systemctl enable atieventsd
Created symlink from /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/atieventsd.service to /usr/lib/systemd/system/atieventsd.service.
- Afterwards, I blacklist the radeon module for it not to interfere with fglrx:
Added "blacklist radeon" on the nano prompt below
$ sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
- Then I generate the xorg.conf file, and get the output below with '# aticonfig --initial'

My MacBook Pro's internal SuperDrive has stopped recognizing CDs/DVDs after Yosemite install
After upgrading to Yosemite, my MacBook Pro's (early 2011) internal SuperDrive has stopped recognizing CDs/DVDs after Yosemite install. It takes them in and will eject them with the keyboard button, but they will not mount. Disk Utility shows the SuperDrive and shows the inserted media, but will not mount the disk. That button is grayed out. Please help! I still have training libraries and music I access on such media. Thx!
UPDATE: I discovered some forum posts about a similar issue with Mavericks that recommended re-installing the system to fix the problem. I realized that I rarely restart my computer unless there's an update that requires it, and decided before undertaking a full re-install of Yosemite to simply restart my computer again. THIS WORKED! The SuperDrive is now mounting CDs and DVDs. Not sure what the issue was, but if anyone else has this issue I hope this will save you hours of frustration.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -

Can't resize disk partitions after Yosemite install.
My disk has two partitions. I run Mavericks on the first, and recently installed Yosemite on the second. The OS works fine, but I no way to resize the partitions. I've tried booting into both Yosemite and Mavericks but the partition layout in disk utility appears locked with fixed partition sizes.
It now appears that I have two options.
Use the undocumented "resizeVolume" command in diskutil to resize the core storage volume in my Yosemite partition, or
Use the "revert" command in diskutil to revert from core storage to the default partition type and try my luck.
Is anyone else facing this issue of not being able to resize your disk partitions after the Yosemite install, and if so, how did you resolve this?
Thanks in advance.None of these worked. I had to resolve this the hard way.
Make a complete TM backup of the new Yosemite installation.
Use a bootable install DVD or USB drive, re-partition the disk and do a complete reinstall.
Recover the applications and data from the TM backup.
It took me about an hour and a half once I decided on this approach, not counting the hours wasted trying to get it working.
To give them credit, the TM backup and restore worked flawlessly and all my apps and data were back without a hitch.
However, reading the other posts in the forum and elsewhere it does appear that Apple has not done a good job with the disk utility in supporting core storage volumes, which is fairly ridiculous since Yosemite defaults to that without giving you a choice. -
unable to bootup after Yosemite install. have to keep shutting down from rear button. it does come on after a few times but then hangs at user login again. If you get in it is great. Seems faster than Mavericks but there is some sort of issue, bootup /login.
Knock on wood, this seems to have been my problem as well. I stumbled on this thread after dealing with this ridiculously-long boot times for the past several weeks.
I just reinstalled McAfee Antivirus and my Macbook Air booted up in less than 1 minute. No more hanging on the boot-up progress bar. No more hanging after I click on my user's avatar on the log-in screen. Bootup would often take 5+ minutes and sometimes never complete.
This has been SUPREMELY frustrating.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING YOUR RESPONSE!!! -
Files disappeared after Yosemite install
Hi there, I've had Yosemite installed for a few weeks now on my laptop (13-inch, early 2011 2.3Ghz Intel Core i5) and have only noticed today that many folders in my Macintosh HD>Home directory are empty! I found out when I was trying to setup a user dictionary in Word 2008 – when prompted to save this new dictionary, Word was unable to find the old path it used to use to save dictionaries in. When I went to Finder to see what was going on, I found that the folders in my home folder are just empty – e.g. Applications, Music, Movies (Cmd+I indicates they contain zero bytes, so they appear to be genuinely empty). What on earth is going on? Has anyone had this same problem? What can I do to 'restore' my files? Any help much appreciated, as I really need some of those missing files
Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
A folder window will open. Inside it there should be files with names as follows:
Envelope Index
ExternalUpdates.storedata
Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have longer names that begin as above. Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK. Typically, the process takes a few minutes, but it may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. In that case, you may be able to speed things up by temporarily adding your home folder to the Privacy list in the Spotlight preference pane. Remove it when Mail has finished importing.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results. -

It goes for many software, like ShareKit.framework, SceneKit.framework, NotificationCenter.framework, Preview.app, Calendar.app, Reminders.app etc. - all of them are Apple software. I get it like every 1 minute in log.
Google didn't help. What is it, what does it means and how to fix?..Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
First, empty the Trash.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it, then drag or copy it — do not type — into the Terminal window:
find . $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 -o -acl \) -exec ls -Odel {} \; | wc -l
Press return. The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
The output of this command, on a line directly below what you entered, will be a number such as "85." Please post it in a reply. -
Yosemite install won't boot into any mode
Really sorry if this has been covered before but I spent a good time searching and couldn't find any existing posts with symptoms to the same extent.
I've got a 2008 iMac 27" and have the latest version of Yosemite installed (10.10.1 I guess). I upgraded to Yosemite probably 2-3 weeks ago and everything has been fine. Then yesterday when I woke it up from sleep it effectively froze - no mouse or keyboard input. So I did a reset by holding down the power button, and when I turned it back on it went to the apple logo boot screen with a progress bar that gets to just below 50% and stuck there. I've restarted quite a few times and left it running up to six hours and still it doesn't boot.
Now this is similar to the issue here - OSX Yosemite won't boot after install on mid 2010 iMac - except I am unable to boot into any mode, and the only startup keys accepted are the P-RAM reset. It won't boot into recovery mode (command+R), safe mode (Shift), startup drive select mode (Option), diagnostics mode (D)... nothing
I've booked into a Genius Bar appointment when the Apple stores reopen after Christmas, but I'm hoping that is a last resort and to be honest I'm unsure what they can do for me except to say it's a lost cause.
Are there any suggestions on what could be happening and why it's ignoring the startup modes? I would have suggested the keyboard not being recognised except the P-RAM command works perfectly, so it's obviously seeing it. I'm a little scared that because it won't let me into a boot device menu (which must operate independent of any HDD) then there's an issue ahead of that in the boot sequence, so possibly the motherboard is shot...
Sorry if I seem a little desperate. I had a HDD crash two years ago to the day (great Christmas present Apple) and it kind of puts a dampener on things.
Happy holidays and I'm grateful for any help that anyone can offerHello there, semerton.
Great job on troubleshooting the issue on your own so far. The following Knowledge Base aritcle offers some additional steps to try for resolving your issue:

Bootcamp Wont Load After Yosemite Install
Loner T,
My bootcamp does not load after Yosemite install.
ThanksThis is the first part of the recovery procedure. In your case, you have two OS X versions, so standard layout is not usable.
Please install GPT Fdisk (aka gdisk) (http://sourceforge.net/projects/gptfdisk/) if you have not done so yet.
You need to use the following steps. If you see any error messages during the following steps, please stop and post back here with the error message. The following steps have values from your Testdisk output (and you can verify) in Steps 7 and 8.
Rebuild GPT5 using start/end offsets
Sudo gdisk /dev/rdisk0
P (print the full list of parts)
D (delete)
5 (part 5)
N (new part)
5 (part 5)
841717760 - Start offset in bytes (start point for Bootcamp part)
+135055353 (Size offset as opposed to End offset)
0700 (Windows part type)
P (print list of all parts just to see what changes will be made)
W (Write the new GPT)
Y (Yes! really write the new GPT)
This will delete and re-write the GPT partition info for /dev/disk0s5.
Reboot. Test that you can see the Bootcamp volume in Finder and see files in the Bootcamp volume. -
Downloaded and installed os x yosemite on iMac that was purchased originally with Mavericks. When power button is pressed I get start up audio tone and then the the black screen with the white apple symbol with the progression bar. The bar moves very slowly two about one third and then the mouse cursor appears and there it stalls for around two minutes. After the wait the login screen appears and it operates normally. This whole process before update would only take maybe 30 seconds.
If I try the web recovery process it will revert back to Mavericks any suggestions on what this might be. I do have an external Mac passport pro external drive that does have time machine enabled and has been there for months.
ThanksAfter spending a number of hours with Apple Care personnel I was connected with a supervisor and finally got the iMac to boot up on every attempt and in a reasonable amount of time. Login screen now comes on in 30 to 40 seconds and computer is usable within a total time of 1 minute to 1minute 30 seconds.
Here was the process. Tried to download whole operating system with reinstall from utilities menu at power on and at 7 hours progress bar stalled at one third the way. Reason, time machine external hard drive was still connected during process. Disconnected all external connections except power and tried download again. This time whole operating system downloaded in 15 to 20 minutes. Yosemite installed and rebooted automatically and booted to login screen, signed in then to desktop, but boot took around five minutes. Shutdown and connected all peripherals, i.e.. ext. HD, DVD, printers and tried to start. iMac stalled at 2 minutes into progression bar with white apple symbol before login screen. Removed peripherals and tried again and still stalled and would not boot.
What was done to correct is as follows. Started iMac in Safe Mode, cleared all items in cache from Macintosh HD/Library folder and System /Library folder, system start up items, launch agents, and launch daemons contents cleared, removed printers in system preferences, ran disk utilities verify and repair of disk and disk permissions. Shutdown and removed power from iMac. With no peripherals system then booted normally. Reconnected peripherals while iMac was still on and added printers back to system preferences and all is well.
So it seems only reasonable that the downloading problem was hindered by the time machine external hard drive, to which an Apple rep. agreed and the extremely slow boot up or stalled boot up was caused by items in the start up and launch folders. I will state here that I was using my ISP's anti virus software for the Mac which was in the launch folders and most likely was causing the boot up problems.
