Emailing a group brings mail to a crawl

Since upgrading to Mavericks, I've experienced a number of issues trying to send Group emails. The most recent update (10.9.1) has compounded the problems. Whenever I attempt to email a group, it's almost as if mail locks up. I get the spinning beach ball. I simply have to wait until it stops spinning before I can resume typing. After typing a letter or two, the beach ball returns. . . more waiting. Surely this has to be a bug.
Is anyone else having this problem? Are there any solutions? After searching the communities, it's obvious that many are encountering significant issues trying to send group emails after upgrading to Mavericks. I'm now looking for an alternative mail application until Apple truly gets this fixed. Any suggestions?

Your email provider imposes a limit on how many emails can be sent at one time from your email address; the only way for you to know this limit is to ask your email provider.
But you shouldn't be sending group emails to people unless all the recipients except yourself are in the BCC field. Otherwise, not only are you likely to try to send email beyond the limit imposed by your email provider, everyone's email address will be exposed to everyone else, and that violates their privacy. At the same time, any of your recipients who are using Windoze have a system that may have various malware that can harvest those email addresses and use them to send spam, as well as leave you and every other recipient open to receiving spam.

In Address book, File / New Group. Give the group a name, and a new folder will be created. You can drag and drop existing addresses in to the folder you just made. You can have the same address in more than one group, which is most useful.

Sending an email to a group using Mail

Hi,
On my mac, to send an email to a group, I just type in the name of the group in my address book and all the emails pop up instantly. However, this doesn't happen when sending an email on my iPhone. Is there a way to send group emails using my iPhone? I have the address book synced so all my contacts and groups are in the address book on the iPhone the same as my mac. Thanks

Not directly using the Mail app, no. There are 3rd party apps that provide that function, for example:

You can use the "commadmin group search" command to list the ldap groups (if you have Delegated Administration installed/configured), otherwise you can use a directory ldapsearch to find the groups.

TS1627 Please Help. I received 4 emails from 1 person with the same message heading. The emails were automatically grouped by Mail. I replied to the latest mail in the conversation. Once sent the other messages in the conversation disappeared. I NEED THEM

Once sent the other messages in the conversation disappeared. I NEED THEM BACK! They all had very important attachments. I have tried looking for them in deleted items, even though I didn't throw any of them away, still cant find them. Never had this problem before. I'm pretty sure its a setting somewhere. Also tried expanding all conversations, no luck. Searching for the mails under the sent email address, no luck.
I'm sure they are not deleted but have somehow been hidden by Mail. Very frustrating.

I have found found out what has happened. I had requested a statement dating back to April 2012 from a supplier. They replied back with the latest statementof 2013 only but used the same subject heading as the previous monthly statements. Apple Mail automatically grouped these and I thought that they were sent altogether. As soon as I replied to the last email all other the previous emails ungrouped from the conversation leaving me lost as to where they had gone. They were all still sitting in my inbox but no longer part of the trcked conversation. I searched under the subject heading and all individual mails were all still there. (feeling stupid - )

Now Tony, I know you can't hear my tone on a forum post but I was not complaining, simply stating facts . This change brought several people in my office to a grinding halt in a long established workflow that is really rather simple (and I thought was already assumed from the original post above ):
1) Select a set of records in FileMaker Pro 12 and export only their e-mail addresses as a CSV file.
2) Open that CSV file in Excel.
3) Copy the column of e-mail address.
4) paste into the appropriate recipient field in Mail.
5) Send
If I were to complain it would be about Apple's typically opaque approach to updates. There is no granular explanation of why changes were made or even "what" changes were made.
Complaining is futile since Apple is Apple and is unlikely to change, but sometimes it is cathartic to "shout into the void" .
I had thought about doing something with a formula in Excel and your suggestion was simple and helpful. Again, however, it is only a workaround for a long established helpful behavior that Apple has inexplicably broken/removed in Mavericks Mail.
I, and the other posters here, would love to have the capability back rather than have to add previously unneeded steps to our workflows.
Ultimately we may add scripting steps to the FileMaker side to export the address lists with commas inserted already if Apple ends up having permanently removed this feature.

Mail 6.2 Can I make emails NOT group same senders emails together? Keeping read

Mail 6.2 major issues for business users. Can we make emails NOT group previous emails from the same sender together? (you know it lists all the previous under it). I have a number of customers who send us multiple emails per day. Because of the grouping, there are many times I cant tell what was read or not read. For instance, if I mark an email "Unread" to work on it later, that action just made everyemail in that group "Unread". Now I have the task of going through the last 20 emails and seeing what I printed/read already from that sender. Its contantly double work and confusion. In my office we have 4 of us with imacs all having the exact same issue in mail 6.2. So what gives? There must be a way to stop previous emails from grouping into the most current email from sender. I am grateful for any assistance as google and bing are not giving me anything useful.

SOLVED from another wonderful post! I am just sick how easy it was. In the "View" there is a tab called "Organize by Conversation" Simply uncheck this box and BAM its perfect just how we need our email set up as individual emails. Wonderful.

How do you send an email to group address with Maverick OSX?

Installed Maverick 10.9.2 and have problem sending emails to Group address's. I can add each reciepent one ata time but can not get the one click Group address to load like I could with OSX 10.7. Any ideas or help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for replying. I did a poor job of explaining my problem. With OSX 10.7, Sending mail from my Mac Pro I was able to add multiple groups to the send line. Using OSX 10.9 I can only add one group, it does not allow multiple's.
I tried the CC line as well as BCC to no avail.
As far as one click, I prefix all groups names with a key double character to keep them together. Now I can type that key characters on the Send To line and bring up the list of groups to select from ( my one click reference).. I use a double ZZ. After selecting the first group, keying ZZ quickly allows subsequent groups etc. to include in the same email. It worked with 10.7, not in 10.9?
Rather time consuming, having to send each group the same email one at a time.

after few days test in my lab, I can see that only email enabled group can be added as site collection admin using POWERSHELL.

Multiple copies of email appearing in Apple Mail

Suddenly I am starting to see multiple copies of an email in me Apple mail client.
This seems to have started when I did the software upgrade earlier today - although I have no idea if this is a coincidence, or part of the problem.
fyi I am using Apple mail with a Google App mail account. This has worked perfectly for a number of years until today. When I look in my gmail account using the web client there is only one copy of the email.
Any ideas?

In general iTunes is slightly more liberal when it comes to spelling than the iPod. As the iPod enumerates the tracks it will see each different spelling as a new artist so it may list one album multiple times. The iPod also takes no account of the Album Artist field so tracks with guest artists may also be viewed as separate albums. Disk No. & No. of disks may also affect the order in which tracks are enumerated or grouped. For a given album the following terms should all have exactly the same values. Album Title, Artist (except for Compilations), No. of Tracks, No. of Discs. & Part of a Compilation. The Sort Artist & Sort Album fields take precedence over Artist & Album and, if used, should either have the same values for all tracks, or match with the existing values for Artist & Album on other tracks.
Normally selecting all the tracks from the album and overtyping the Album, Artist & Album Artist info. is enough to fix this issue, although once I had some weird extended character that refused to be replaced in certain tracks. In this case the answer was simply to add some random info. into each field, e.g. add X onto each value, apply the changes, then remove the excess text & reapply.

How to create a group in Mail?

I don't know how to add names to a group. Mail has a list of all people who have e-mailed me but I can't see it to move names onto the group I wish to create.

Note: if you add an email address to an Address Book member, and you do it by adding a second address called "home", and leave the first one "work" empty, smart mail box won't pick it up, and you'll wonder what's wrong. If the person has only one email address, make sure there is no empty email address item above it so the smart mailbox will find it.
Example: (wrong)

Example: (correct)
-          home jsmit(a)nothere.com
Also: Apple Mail lets your select "Sender is member of Group", to say "Family", but there are no HELP items in MAIL help that discuss or point you to the Address book to deal with groups.

Creating a new group in Mail

Is there an easy way to create a new group in mail (or I guess it's really the Address book) from an email I already sent to a group of people. I don't want to copy each name one by one if it's not necessary. Thanks, Jack

Each email address in the group is put in the To: field automatically when you put them all in the BCC field when composing the email. Nobody sees anything except their own email address.
I think you are mistaken there, Golden. If the To: field is blank the recipients in the Bcc field will see the To: as undisclosed-recipients - if they get anything at all; some ISPs will reject a message with a blank To:. I would agree with putting the target recipients in the Bcc, but when doing this I usually put my own address in the To: field.

10.5.3: Email sub-groups not working

Hi Everyone,
I upgraded my server to 10.5.3 the other day, and I have discovered a problem. In the workgroup manager I have groups that "mailing list" feature enabled. In these groups I have members that are both individual users, and also other groups. Ever since I upgraded to 10.5.3 members of the subgroups don't receive any emails when messages are sent to the parents list.
For example, I have a group called "ParentGroup" which has the members of "user1", "user2", and "ChildGroup". ChildGroup has members of "User3" and "user4". If I send an email to "ParentGroup", only users 1&2 get an email, and NOT 1,2,3&4 like it should be.
If I check my /etc/aliases file and look in the automatically generated section, indeed I see an entry like:
parentgroup: user1, user2
I can say with certainty that this issue stems from the upgrade to 10.5.3 and not a matter of just not waiting long enough for the script to update /etc/aliases.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Does anyone know what updates /etc/aliases? Is it a cron job, or a daemon that is always running?

Yes we are having exactly the same problem, and it was triggered by the upgrade to 10.5.3
I hope Apple proposes a fix to this soon. We have a large number of nested groups set up. The symptom is just as you described. Emails being sent to a group "mailing list" are only making it to users that are direct members of that group, not the inherited members from nested groups.
Quite frustrating.

Email to group cannot be sent

Hi all.
Problem with sending email to a group since installing 10.7:
This happens with a newly created group or with an old, existing group:
I add the member of the group (in Address Book), then go to Mail. Start entering the group name, Mail suggests likely hits, I pick the correct group.
Type email texte, etc..., hit "Send".
I get an error msg that states: "Cannot send message using the server name.of.server.here".
A bit lower in the (large) error msg, it states: "This message couldn't be sent because you haven't specified any recipients". !!!
In response, I've chosen "Try later", but, of course, nothing happens...
Anyone know what the problem is???
I'm going to send a copy to report the bug.

I would be genuinley happy if someone could tell me how to turn off this ridiculously repeating popup. One would think that after telling me about a thousand times that the response can't be sent, I really do get the message.

Creating a group e-mail

I am new at websites and created a website on iweb. The website contains a roster of individuals with each person's e-mail address. I would like to create a link (I'm not sure if link is the proper term) so that someone going to the website who would like to send a group e-mail to everyone on the roster can do it by clicking on the link rather than having to copy and paste each person's e-mail. I can't figure out how to do this. Can you help me?

You can do this in iWeb, I believe...
Just make your link (text, graphic, or photo) and then select it. Open up the Inspector and click over to the Hyperlink tab. Check off the "Enable as Hyperlink" box. Link to "An Email Message". Then in the address field just enter each email address separated by a comma. Enter an email subject if you want. That should do it.
I don't know if iWeb has any limits on how many emails you can list, but I just tried it out with 4 emails and it put all four emails in the To: field of a new email.
