Emails addressed to me under different/aliased names unrecognised

Hi,
I have a family email account for me & my wife. We use one email address, but people sending email to us give us different names: ie
Jack Citizen <email@address>
Jill Citizen <email@address>
Jack & Jill <email@address>
Jack & Jill Citizen <email@address>
Jonathon Citizen <email@address>
and so on. Both our names are easily abbreviated in several ways. When I use "smart addresses" only one of these is recognised.
We have just one contact for us in the address book, which is given the name "Jack & Jill Citizen".
I realise that I can't control what people wish to call me, but I would like AddressBook to be able to say aha, all emails to <email@address> should be attached to "Jack & Jill Citizen".
I guess this is analogous to having email aliases.
Thanks for any suggestions you could give me.
Jack (& Jill, or whatever you feel like calling me. Feel free. Everyone else does.)

Hi Jack (& Jill)
Mail looks in the Address Book for a name only if no
name was specified by the sender. If the sender
specifies a name in addition to the email address
when sending the message, that name takes precedence
over whatever information you have in your Address
Book when displaying that particular message.
Yes, I understand this last paragraph: but the implication is that "Smart Addresses" functionality becomes frequently redundant. For "Smart Addresses" to function correctly, both the email and the Full Name need to match the contents of the address book. If there is a full match of both of these, Smart Addresses displays only the name, not the email, and this is the behaviour I want. {That is the sole purpose of Smart Addresses.} But if there is not an exact match of Full Name as well as email, Smart Addresses continues to display both the Full Name and the email. Furthermore, the contextual menu attached to the contact has the option "add to address book" rather than "open in address book".
What I have been finding is that when mail is constantly suggesting to me that I add addresses to the address book for contacts I already have. When I click on the recipient (me), it does not have the option "open in address book" but rather "add to address book". Smart Addresses successfully matches only a fraction of the contacts, when in fact all of them are already in the address book.
If someone sends me an email, I need to know whether I have them already in my address book, so I can add them if need be. Smart Addresses is designed to help me do this, by displaying the Name only, not the address, if it recognises the person. But in practice, Smart Addresses tells me that almost every sender is unknown; that's because I have entered their names as John instead of Jonathon etc etc.
The only partial solutions I have are to add senders will-nilly to the address book, and then use the AddressBook menu item "look for Duplicate Entries" or "Merge Selected Cards". But this is a terrible solution which frequently destroys contact integrity.
I also notice that when (in Mail) I add addresses to the address book, the generated contact is unusual; first and last names and "&" signs are confused for middle names and so on. This reinforces the need to minimise adding to the address book via the Mail program, based on Smart Addresses.
Am I making sense?
Jack.

  • How can I view/sort by email address not be the sender's name

These days people often send emails from different devices and sometimes their display name is different on each. When I receive an email from them it may have their display name, or if this has not been set on say their phone I just see their email address. But when I try to search or sort it does not look at the underlying email address just the display name and so it appears like some of the emails are missing. Is there any way to view messages by the underlying email address and not their display name or what has been saved to my address book.
    Thank you - Marie

This add-on lets you display the senders' or recipients' email addresses as a column in the Threads pane (message list):

  • How do I change my iCloud email address as it is different to my Apple ID which I recently changed?

I recently changed my Apple ID password however it didn't allow me to change my iCloud email address either so they are both different and I can no longer sign into iCloud, what shall I do to change the email address on my iCloud to the same as my Apple ID one?

You have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iPhone, then sign back in with the ID you wish to use.  If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, go to https//appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Tap edit next to the primary email account, tap Edit, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https//appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

  • My email is being sent under my mothers name!!!

So my itunes account is connected to my mothers credit card, and it has been for many years. I noticed only recently that when i send a mail, it shows that the mail is sent under my mothers name, but my own email address. I cant seem to find where i can change this and it is really quite annoying.

From the Mail menu bar, select
              Window ▹ Connection Doctor
Look for the disused SMTP (outgoing mail) account in the window that opens. Double-click it. Another window will open, showing a list of all the outgoing mail accounts. The unwanted one will be selected. Click the minus-sign button to delete it, then click OK.
If there's more than one unwanted account, repeat.

hello guys ...i need any help or suggestions, how can i change my icloud email address?? i typed a w rong name by mistake?? can i change it and retype the correct one? thanks ...your suggestio is higly appreciated.

That's definitely not supposed to happen.  You shouldn't have someone else's iCloud email linked to your ID.
You'll have to get iCloud support to sort this one out.  The only way to contact them is to start here: http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/.  You'll have to provide your iPhone serial number.  Unless it's within the 90 day free support window, or you purchased AppleCare, there will be a charge.  I suppose you can plead your case when they answer that you shouldn't be charged as you didn't set up this address and it shouldn't have happened with your ID.

  • My wife and I want to swap her 4s for my 4 while a take a short trip out of the country.  We use the same email address for itunes but different for email.  Can we just change our phone numbers and email addresses so we get our own messages?

My wife and I want to swap her iphone 4s for my iphone 4 while I take a short trip out of the country.  We use the same itunes account but have different email accounts.  Can we just change our phone numbers with our carrier and change email addresses on our phones so we get correct messages, with out disturbing our other apps?

The email is simple. Just delete her email acoount on her iPhone and configure your account into the phone and then do the same for her on your phone.
The harder issue is that to switch the cellular phone service you will need to switch the SIM cards and the two phones do not use the same size SIM card.

  • How can I change my Adobe ID email address given my company has changed names?

Need to change my email as it is likely that I wont get alerts when the old one is switched off. Nor will I remember it to log in. This happens frequently as companies merge and separate so should be easy?

I just did follow Varjak's instruction, but it refused. I was asked to enter my Apple ID's email address which unfortunately is the same as my Apple ID. I created two different passwords for each Apple ID n primary email address when I set up my I tune account in the first place, however.
I do remember my Apple ID password because I have used it every time I installed new apps, but I completely forgot my password for the primary email address because I've never used it at all! I have another email address which I actively use it for all my email. I want to change my primary email address which happened to be my Apple ID as well to the one I actively use.
Because of the explained problem, I can't log in to Icloud as I have been asked to verify by following the instruction sent to my primary email address.
I would really appreciate it if any one can help me solve this problem.
    Thank you all.
    Suzy

  • How do I get my email address to not also show my name?, how do I get my email address to not also show my name?

I am trying to remove my name from showing in one of my email address.  How would I do that?

Open the Mail app.  Click Mail > Preferences from Mail's menu.  Choose the "Accounts" tab on top.  Select the account with the email address you wish to change.  There is probably a "Full Name" setting shown there.  Change it as you wish.

In outlook, when I input internal user id, it will be converted to email address automaticallyThis conversion in made by Outlook using the Outlook server repository.

somehow I have made an iCloud account that is not verified and is asking me to check an email address that is of that account and also incorrect. How do I change the name of this incorrect icloud account/email address?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If it's the iCloud email address that is incorrect, you cannot change it. If it's a non iCloud address, you can change it at My Apple ID

  • How to use same email address on iCloud across different devices?

I am setting up my iCloud ID, which I already have on my MacBook Air and iPhone on my new iPad mini. When I turn on iCloud, it asks me to set up a new email address at @icloud.com, which I don't want it to do. Instead, I want to use the @me.com email address I already have.
How do I turn on Mail on my iPad mini and get it to pick up the email address I already have?

    Hey pdenlinger,
It sounds like you are signed into a different iCloud account on the iPad mini, in my experience that would be the only cause. Be sure to double check what Apple ID you are signed into for iCloud, we'll want it to be your @me.com address.

When you setup your iOS device, by default the same Apple ID is used for iCloud services and store purchases (iTunes, App Store, iBookstore). However, if you want to use a separate Apple ID, you can set up the account you would like to use in Store Settings.

  • Keeping BT email address and using a different ISP...

Is it possible to do this with the new BT email service?
Someone on the BT Residential Customer Support Community Forum managed to subscribe to a premium BT email service, keep their existing btinternet.com address for a small fee, and then migrate to a different ISP.
Clearly, ISPs will discourage a lot their customers from migrating if they cannot keep their existing email addresses.
Might that also be seen as some form of unfair practice, in terms of restricting competition?

    Hi.
The Premium email service is not ceasing, otherwise "they" wouldn't be informing those on old legacy payg or basic email to either move the address to their BT broadband account (if relevant) or pay 1.60 to keep the address.
This service has been around for years.
Not sure your last comments are relevant - since it's up to the user to move as they wish. Obviously an ISP email tie-in is, however, relevant - but this doesn't stop BTinternet users from keeping their address if they move elsewhere (for that fee). I don't know if other ISPs have this sort of facility.
If people chop & change frequently, then it would make sense to only use a non ISP email address, e.g. their own domain, gmail, hotmail, (even Yahoo) if they so wish.

  • Recently created a new iCloud account, but want to use my previous iCloud email address (created with a different iCloud account)... help needed!!

    Guys,
I hope you can help me out on this, but I have a problem...
A few years ago I created an iCloud account on my old iPhone 4S.
Back then, I used an email address for iCloud registration that's no longer active.
Anyway, I also made an iCloud email address back then.
    - Now I have a brand new iPhone 5S (totally love it)... and I just created an iCloud acccount with an other email address than I used back at the time I had my old 4S.
But... now I would like to use the same 'old' iCloud email address that I used on my previous 4S iCloud account.
Since that previous iCloud account is linked to an email address that no longer exists, I don't know how to do this!!
    Can someone please help??

Each of you should set up your separate iCloud account on your own computer using your Apple ID. This gives you two independent iCloud accounts.
Note that an iPad is not a multi-user device. It can only be synced with one account.

  • Why does my email address show up as my contact name to people in iMessage?

Everyone says I show up as an email address. Is anyone else havin this problem or know how to fix it?

I did a reset due to poor battery life and have been informed that my email address instead of phone number is showing up.,,,,,,,,am on iphone 4s.
I have tried the above fix and it did not work.  Messages show receive at 2 Addresses one of which is phone number and the other is email address.  The phone number is grayed out and the address is highlighted. It does not provide me with the option to change it from email to phone.
Anyone have any ideas?  Thanks.  Right now I am very frustrated.  Had no issues with phone until upgrade.  Now battery does not last a full day and even with reset am now having battery issues plus this one.
    Thanks
