TalkTalk (Tiscali) say there is no problem with their server because I have checked and can send emails with their webmail.

No that is not it:
Open Mail>Preferences>Accounts, the first page has this on it
If you click on the server name in the box (gmail in your case I assume) it opens and reveals this:
If you select Edit SMTP Server list you get this:

My wife’s iPad was not downloading Yahoo mail, although her iPhone was. Both used IOS 8.2. We tried deleting the account several times and troubleshooting all of the other settings. The problem appears to have been that allowing the IOS to automatically create the account on the iPad resulted in the wrong settings for the incoming server. The following procedure, pieced together from two websites, fixed the problem for us. So far, so good.

On the iPhone, tap Settings.
Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
Tap your Yahoo account, then delete it.
Tap Add Account.

Ensure IMAP is selected.
Enter the following incoming mail server information:

Is there a way in aperture to make pictures black and white but still leave color on some objects. for example, having a picture of someone holding a glass of red wine and having everything except the wine black and white?

A couple of ways this can be done
- non destructively:
Use the Color adjustment to reduce the saturation of all the colors you dont want,
and leave only the saturation of the saturation of the color you do want.
Use the Ranges to more selectively choose the right color you want to leave.
- destructively:
Use the Dodge&Burn plug-in from Apple.
Set the brush to Desaturate, choose its strength and size appropriately.
Then just desaturate all the area's that need to be desaturated.

My iPhone shows 1.0GB of memory used by Mail. I've emptied all mailboxes and folders but still show 1.0 GB

After upgrading to iOS7, I noted my iPhone 5 shows 1.0GB for Mail in the Usage list. I've cleaned out all mailboxes and folders but still show the Mail app as using 1.0 GB. Am I missing something?

In any case, I'm posting this to help others. I can't say with certainty what fixed this for me, but my hunch is that deleting (and then re-adding) the iCloud account on BOTH my iPhone and iPad had something to do with it. Or maybe it was launching/syncing via Mail.app, and/or giving it some time. Or maybe those prayers had something to do with it after all.
The funniest part about all of this is that my whole iPhone backup (with small Camera Roll) takes up 3.6 GB and my whole iPad backup (with even smaller Camera Roll) takes up 1.4 GB... so I'm still right up against that 5 GB quota, and will still end up paying $20/year for the extra 10 GB of space anyway. If only for elbow room, and if only for peace of mind.

Problem: how to reset clients so that they re-connect to a OD Server

I have a problem with our Open Directory clients (running 10.5.x and 10.6.x)
Due to a hardware failure I needed to re-install our MacOSX Server system. I decided to start over with a fresh installation of OSX 10.6 Server and completely new settings, since I wanted to migrate our server from 10.5 to 10.6 anyway.
The 10.6 server installation seems to be fine, but I am running into one problem:
Our client computers were set up to connect to the 10.5 server via the "Directory Services" app. The clients were set to have some managed preferences, like using the Software Update server on the OSX server system; this worked fine with our 10.5 server, and when I initially set up the client systems to access the 10.5 OD server via Directory Services, an auto-configuration started on the client systems, setting up e.g. iChat and Software update to communicate with the server.
Now in my new installation, this does not happen anymore on our existing systems. To me it looks like the clients still think that they are configured correctly by the server (the IP address and the name of the server did not change). But even when removing the server from Directory Services app on the clients and setting it up again the screen asking if the system should be set up to use the services does not come up again.
Is there a way to reset the client computers into a state where they think they were never connected to a Open Directory server, so that they re-launch the auto configuration when connecting to our server system? Or is there something I am missing on our server that needs to be configured to set up clients to e.g. use the Software Update server? The Software Update server is running on the server, and the users are set up to use the SU server, but the info seems not to move over to the client systems…

Maybe you can try this.
Here is a workaround:
1) In the Utilities folder, open Keychain Access. In the System keychain, find and delete the three com.apple.kerberos.kdc entries - a certificate and a public/private key pair generated from that certificate.
2) In Terminal, run 'sudo rm -fr /var/db/krb5kdc' - this will destroy the local KDC database.
3) In Terminal, run 'sudo /usr/libexec/configureLocalKDC' - this will regenerate the local KDC database, including a new certificate and SHA1 hash.
4) Bind the machine to OD.
I use this when i install an new image on an new Mac and have to bind it to our OD server (in our new image this not necessary anymore)

My hard disk is full. I already moved lots of photos from other folders on the hard disk to other external hard drives, so there are a lot of question marks in Lightroom. So, are those photos still taking up room on the computer hard disk? I want to move everything I have in Lightroom off of the computer to another external hard drive, in hopes that will free up space. You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots. Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.

You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library. Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

when opening firefox, the connection goes to www.aol.com, and the eror states it cannot establish the connection. I am not comfortable with on-line banking to leave the firewall off, and this was never a problem until last night.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

I get repeated messages in Safari:
Cannot open page because:
1) cannot find server - "mymsn.com"
2) not connected to the internet
I am, in fact, connected because I can go to another URL and it will open.

It is saying that it cannot open the page for one of the 2 following reasons.
1) cannot find server - "mymsn.com"
2) not connected to the internet
If 2 is incorrect then it must for reason 1
Try MSN.com instead.
