Emails deleted on server and on iphone

I have noticed in the past two weeks that emails on my iphone are disappearing-they download only to be wiped out by new ones. Emails on the server seemingly do the same, even though I just changed the settings to never delete yesterday in an effort to stop the auto delete. I can't seem to figure out the problem and it is a problem since I rely on my iphone to receive and answer emails- Anyone have a solution?

OK that explains it then.  When an email client like Outlook, Windows Live Mail or some other is set up using POP3 in the account, by default it will download anything from the Inbox on the server to your computer and then delete it from the server.  That's why the phone can't see them---because when you check your email with Outlook it grabs the emails.
If you want to be able to see your email and work with it on more than one computer or other device like a smartphone or a tablet, you need to set the account up in each one using IMAP.  Which by the way is now the default for Comcast.  That just happened over the last few months.  Before that the default was POP3.  Here are the settings for IMAP--------------------
http://customer.comcast.com/help-and-support/internet/email-client-programs-with-xfinity-email/
The phone  is probably already using IMAP, but check it anyway.
POP3 is an older protocol, and was intended for use by people using only one computer.  And at any rate, POP doesn't support local folders.  It only works on the Inbox.  In IMAP you should see everything from any device.  Anything you do to an email on one device/computer is reflected on any others with the same account enabled on it.
I have no idea why Comcast would tell you to use POP, since they are now recommending IMAP as the preferred protocol.

You can go into settings, mail, contacts and calendars, and set your mail to only download the last 50.
When you actually set upthe account, you can go into any available advanced settings and see if that can be set to new mail only. Unfortunately, every mail provider had slightly different things they'll allow you to tweak, so you just have to play to see what you can do.
For example, when I set up my Yahoo, I have different things I can tweak than I do on my Hotmail account, so some accounts allow more ability to tweak than others.

Have you check the Yahoo forums to see if the Yahoo server is down?

  • IMAP email deleted on desktop remains in iPhone inbox

Seems like people are seeing a variety of email problems with the new iOS 4. I flipped through the first 6 pages or so of topics and did not see my particular issue.
I am using my university IMAP email service. If I read and delete email using the Apple Mail client on Mac OS 10.6.4, it still remains in my iPhone inbox, showing as unread. I am using iOS 4 on the iPhone 4. I also have an iPad, and using the same mail settings, the iPad inbox syncs fine with the IMAP server. On my previous iPhone 3G, everything worked fine. I did notice similar behavior with the 3G after my iOS 4 update, but I sold that phone soon after, so I wasn't able to test this fully.
I have tried killing the Mail background process, restarting the phone, hitting "load more messages" on my iPhone, refeshing in the inbox, deleting the mail account and re-entering manually, syncing the mail account from my Mac or entering the info manually on the phone. Nothing has resolved my issue.
Interestingly, I also use another IMAP client as well, from FastMail.fm, and I do not notice the problem here. Maybe the bug only manifests itself with certain mail server software.
Anyhow, it looks like another mail bug in the new iOS. Anybody else noticing a similar issue?

they are not blank emails, they just look blank. I just got hit by this yesterday accidentally clicked on am email sent 12/31/1969 and its been a bain. It vanished but later I found it lurking in my drafts folder of my 3G iPhone updated with 4.1OS. It changes dates when you try to delete it. And in one case, it changed its message to show the first line of javascript code. It's installing something or trying to. First line reads $(window).load(function() {2 3 initial... so I assume its starting some initialization process and that its malware.
I am using gmail. Computers seem fine, iPhone is weird. I changed passwords to something the iPhone wouldn't know. I did so on two different computers. And that seemed to stop everything. Ok, it stopped my phones email connection. Till I could figure this out. Or I thought. For last night when on the phone a call got interupted. I called back, no big deal, dropped call, but when I got off the phone I noticed I had an email. Something had come in. It arrived during the minute of that dropped call. It was a nice email announcing the birth of friends first child. Wonderful news. But it shouldn't have shown up on the phone.
Since then I've been to see the Apple Genius' bar, the drafts folder that would not delete, cleared itself out magically before I arrived at Apple, but I have pictures of it and that line of js in my camera. Due to the range of odd behaviors the OS has been reinstalled. Good. Then I restored my phone to a backup version. Fine. And now, with right password set up, it intermittently tells me it does not recognize the password and then try again and its all good and then its not. Some folders update with the time stamp, others don't. I can send but I have not received in the 50 minutes even tho I've sent myself test emails from other devices. Also noticed, I cannot deselect my drafts folder, nor that it is backed up on some other server. Is this normal?
What is this thing and how can I kill it?
But, whatever it is, its not blank, it just looks blank.
Open to suggestions / insights. Would prefer not to completely rebuild from scratch.

They are not on the the phone, they are on the server, which the phone show you
In other words, you only see what is on the server through the phone

  • How do I get Outlook Email from Exchange Server configured on iPhone?

My business email is hosted on MS Exchange Server via Outlook and is distributed to my networked PC and VPN home PC and laptop. My IT manager has enabled IMAP on the Exchange Server. I am unable to get my email account on the iPhone to receive or send mail through my Server. My domain names have been entered in the format "exchange.[domainname].com, and my user ID and password has been input for both incoming and outgoing email. The iPhone cannot seem to talk to the server and retrieve or send mail. Does anyone know what to do on the iPhone to be able to communicate with the server? (I am aware of the various limitations of the iPhone vs. Windows Smart Phones in terms of being able to use Microsoft Push Email and to be able to synch calendars, contacts etc. with a corporate server and/or multiple computers. Hopefully Apple will license ActiveSync for the iPhone to provide for this functionality, as recently rumored on a few blogs.)

Thanks for your response. I've used the path that I had successfully used for years with my Windows Smartphone to no success. Neither advanced Apple telephone support nor my IT guy could get this to work. I have implemented a workaround to have my server automatically forward my emails to a new Yahoo account which then pushes to my iPhone. Definitely an unsatisfactory and incomplete solution, however.
Editorial comments for Apple: Windows ActiveSync was so much more sophisticated in terms of being able to deal with server-based email, contacts, calendar and for users with multiple computers - i.e. office, home and laptop. I would have expected Apple to introduce something at least as functional and sophisticated or to licence ActiveSync. My user capabilities are substantially downgraded in these areas with my new iPhone and absent a quick software upgrade or licence of ActiveSync I will be unable to function productively with my iPhone. While we're at it, Apple, with my multiple email accounts set up on the iPhone, which is a great feature, I have no easy way to tell in which account to find a new email. I am forced to update the inbox in every single account to try to find where my new mail is going - some new mail indicator next to the account name (as opposed to showing how many unread emails exist with each account) needs to be implemented. The phone hardware, other than the batter - which doesn't even last me for the full course of a workday - is great, but software has only gotten to about 75% of where it needs to be.

  • HT204053 I'm a pc user who just got an iphone. How do I set up an email for my pc and my iphone?

Help! I have no idea what I am doing. My daughter (Mac Person) told me to go to mobileme but it said it was expired and sent me to cloud.

To set up iCloud, see http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/
If you already have an email address you use and just want to add it to your iPhone go to settings-mail, contacts and calendar- add account.  Provide the account information and it will do the rest.

  • How do I stop my iphone from deleting emails from the server and visa versa

I have the iphone 4, recently my phone started sending email info to the server. Meaning it deletes emails from my hotmail account if I delete them off my phone and visa versa. I know there is a setting under advanced setting, I don't have that button. I showed someone in the apple store and she said it was a software issue and to wipe my phone and back it up from my back up, this didn't help anything, neither did re setting the settings. I don't even have the spot in the settings where I can put in the pop3 information. This is a new thing my phone started doing and I don't understand why I don't have the same setting buttons as everyone else. Any advice? The only other thing I can think is wiping my phone and starting over but I don't want to lose the data in my aps
I'm on the newest software version, this started happening just before I did that update.

POP3 settings won't appear if an IMAP service can be found. Basically, you're going to have to set up the account with bogus information so that the phone can't find the server by itself. Then, when it can't, you'll be presented with the advanced settings where you can set it up as POP3 and enter the settings you want to use.
POP3 is considered pretty much obsolete these days. The whole point of IMAP is to allow you replicate the server based mail store completely so that all information is available across all of your devices. If you don't want things crowding your in-box, but don't want to delete it entirely, why not just set up folders and move things where you want them to be once you read them?

  • Recover emails deleted on server that are still on iPhone?

We are using Outlook at work, and I accidentally and permanently deleted just about everything from my inbox.  I immediately put my iphone into airplane mode, so my all the emails are saved on my phone, but gone off the server.
I was able to recover some of the emails through the web access mail server, but not all.
Does anyone know of a way to push the emails back to my server inbox from my iphone?  Other than forwarding every indididual item?  I would like to keep the sender as original, and there are something like 400 emails..
    thanks!

There's nothing you can do on the phone to fix it. If the IT department can't (or won't) restore your mailbox to a previous state, about the only thing I can think of it forward all of them to yourself (with the phone offline) then take it back online, which should allow the messages in the outbox to send.
Many organizations either don't back up the active mail store or refuse to use it for anything other than disaster recovery for legal reasons.

  • Emails deleted in exchange and advanced mailboxes stay on ipad and iPhone

Hi I am having issues with emails that have been deleted from outlook (exchange profile) remaining in the inbox in the iPad and iPhone which is confusing at times.
    Any advIse would be appreciated.
    Karl

You can access an Exchange account and a MobileMe account at the same time with the iPhone's Mail application and with the iPad's Mail application, but over the air syncing for contacts and calendar events with both are kept completely separate on each device. You can view business and personal contacts and calendar events combined or separately, but you can't sync MobileMe contacts and calendar events with your Exchange contacts and calendar events or vice-versa.
If your Mac is running Snow Leopard and accessing the company Exchange account on a personal computer at home is not against company policy and supported, you can access your Exchange account via ActiveSync with the Mail.app on your Mac, which will provide syncing of Exchange contacts with the Address Book and syncing of Exchange calendar events with iCal. Apple licensed ActiveSync from Microsoft for use with the Mail application on the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, and with the Mail.app, Address Book, and iCal with Snow Leopard and beyond.

  • Deleting email messages from server and device

I had to wipe my 8830 due to a major sync problem but I no longer have the option to delete from the server when I delete email messages. I checked the user's guide and throughout my device. Where do I find this setting please?

Ok, here is the Knowledge Base article relating to your need.
    http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB13509
From your MESSAGES folder > Menu > Options > Email Reconciliation > Message Services.
If those settings are not present on your device... you probably have some Service Book problems (as in not present or corrupt).
Do this: First, look at Options > Advanced > Servcie Books and delete ALL service books releated to any email account.
Then, with the BlackBerry device powered ON, remove the battery a few seconds and then reinsert the battery to reboot
     Then do this:
    1. Options > Advanced > Host Routing Table > Menu > Register.
    2. Resend your service books from your carrier BIS site.
    http://www.blackberryfaq.com/index.php/Where_can_I_log_into_my_BIS_account%3F
    3. With the BlackBerry device powered ON, remove the battery a few seconds and then reinsert the battery to reboot

  • How to stop emails deleting automatically from gmail on iphone 4s

Emails are deleting every 3 days needs to change the settings however cant find them!

Go to Settings > iTunes and App Stores and set the option for "iTunes Match" to OFF. Then do a hard reset by holding down the Power and Home buttons until you see the Apple logo.
FYI, there is no matching from an iOS device.

  • Checking for new email deletes all previous messages from iphone 3g

After receiving any email, the device is removing all email from all local folders. The remove setting is set to 'never', 'ask before deleting' is set to 'on' and it is set to show 75 messages. There is nothing in the trash, sent, or main inbox.
I can see a test email for about 5 minutes. if I resynch or turn the device off, and and then check for new email, the old email is removed. No trace of it anywhere.
It didn't do this originally. It just started in the last few days.
    Thanks.

I suggest deleting and recreating the account.

  • My deleted emails on iPhone 4s are not being deleted from server

I'm facing a problem with my iPhone 4s when deleting emails. Unfortunately, they are not being deleted from the server. I tried setting the account in pop and imap with settings to delete from server and trash ticked. Still they keep on appearing in Outlook which is a double work to do. Please advise.

I'm no expert by far, but have had issues with this before.
IMAP should allow your iPhone to remove messages from the server.
But have you made sure both the iPhone and Outlook are connecting via IMAP?
If your iPhone does remove the messages from the server, but your computer is using POP, then the computer may download the email before it is removed form the server by your iPhone.
This was my issue, that my computer had already downloaded the message, and POP does not check later if it is deleted.
If you delete a message from Outlook does it disappear on the iPhone?
Alternativly you may need to check the email server settings.
    Who is your email provider?
They may be able to check if IMAP allows you to remove emails.

  • Can I use use the same server as my iPhone ?

I don't want to have to delete the same messages on iPad that I already deleted on my iPhone. I tried changing server to match iPhone server, didn't work, any ideas?

If your email provider allows you to use IMAP, rather than POP3 to connect to their mail servers, do that.
IMAP stores all the email on the server and accesses it directly, so it is "in sync" across every device or computer you access it from.
Delete, read, send, forward or whatever an email on one device and it will be exactly the same on all others.
As you haven't mentioned who your email provider is, I can't give any more specific setup instructions.
