Emails from desktop to iPhone 4. How to get folders appearing?

I have set up my iPhone 4 to connect to my personal email account however the desktop email folders don't appear in my iPhone and any email sent from my iPhone doesn't appear in the sent on my desktop. Is this a setting I am missing on the iPhone, something to do with how I set up Outlook on my desktop or something to take up with my ISP? Any guidance/assistance would be appreciated

If this is a POP account, the folders (which are local to your PC) do not transfer to the phone, and there currently is no way to add any on the phone (look for this in iOS 5).
IMAP account folders exist on the server and are mirrored by all clients including the iPhone
