Emails in imported mailboxes are void of content

I just got a new MacPro with Leopard. My old G4 was too messed up to use Migration Assistant so I copied all my mailboxes to a drive and then imported them from this drive into my MacPro email. The G4 was running the latest version of Tiger and I was using Mac Mail on both. I see all the emails in the mailboxes but when I click on them, they are empty. There is no content in the emails I imported.
What is the deal with this and why does Mac Mail have to be built into the OS in such a complicated way? I remember when you could easily see your separate iCal Calendars and copy them around easily. Now that's complicated too. Why?

If you actually see the messages displayed in Mail, then perhaps you should rebuild your Mail index like this:
1. Quit Mail if it's running.
2. Go to ~/Library/Mail and delete the Envelope Index file(s).
3. Restart Mail and wait for it to import your existing messages; then check to see if the problem is resolved.

  • Imported mailboxes are emptyo copy my mailboxes from G4

I tried to copy mailboxes from G4 Powerbook OS X 10.4.11 to G5 OS X 10.3. The mailboxes all imported OK to the "imported" file and al the files and sub mailboxes are there but none of the emails are in them. In Home/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/Imported on the G5 all the mailboxes are present and show the correct file sizes but in Mail programme no emails are present, just empty pages
    Can anyone help?

Why would you be trying to import mail from 10.4 to 10.3? The mail formats for both versions of Mac OS X are completely different, so it's no surprise there's no email there. You would need to convert all your mail from 10.4 to the mbox format, then use the Import feature of Mail on 10.3 to import those messages.
To do that you need to use emlx to mbox converter.

  • Imported Mailboxes are Empty

I just bought a new iMac and wanted to import all my old Mailboxes from my G4 Mail into my new version of Mail.
When I go to import, I select OS X and then select all the mailboxes. It appears to work fine, it imports without error, and then all the mailboxes appear in Mail, but when I go through the different folders, they're all empty. Every one of them. And when I quit mail and then restart. They're gone.
Anyone have any idea what's happening?
    Thanks.

    Hi Dave,
Thank you so much for responding so quickly. I have been told that Apple users are so helpful on this site! Tis true! I'm not sure what data format you are referring to (sorry, I'm a bit of a techie novice). The instructions I read on Move to Mac (on the Apple website) said to copy my Eudora folder and then use the import command to import messages. As I said, when I did this the mailboxes show up, but they are all empty.
I did use the Eudora Mailbox Cleaner and it transferred all of my mailboxes names (without the .mbx extension, which is nice) as well, but the folders do not contain any messages. I think perhaps I might be copying only part of the files I need, but I can't locate other Eudora folders on my machine. It just seems strange that it would transfer the mailbozes but no messages.
    Any thoughts?
    Trish

  • Emails in local mailboxes disappearing

I have a POP account and I'm accessing it only from one machine, my G5 dual 2GHz with 8GB RAM. Since I switched over from Eudora over the weekend, Mail.app has caused no end of headaches for me.
Occasionally, emails stored in various "On My Mac" local mailboxes have seen fit to just vanish, leaving what looks like a blank mailbox. Rebuilding the mailbox doesn't work. On the occasions that the emails do show up as a list, when I click on any individual email, it displays the infamous "The message from <Name> <[email protected]> concerning <Subject> has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it." message (which shouldn't be happening since the emails are already stored locally on my hard drive--this is a POP account after all and nobody has access to it but me and I'm only using one machine to access it). I have to re-import the emails using Mail.app's built-in menu option to do so. I cannot use the "remove the Envelope Index" trick because, in total, I have in excess of 560,000 emails in over 460 mailboxes that I need access to when searching for emails on a certain topic and having Mail.app reindex everything takes something close to 5 hours. I cannot be down for 5 hours. I have already run "Repair Permissions" using Disk Utility and have gotten a clean bill of health.
Is there anything I can do to make sure that my locally-stored emails just display their contents and not give me the dreaded " The message from <Name> <[email protected]> concerning <Subject> has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it." message or just display blank mailbox(es) and not have to rebuild the damned thing(s) all the time? Why is Mail.app so fragile anyway? I've used Eudora for decades in POP mode and have never experienced the problems that Mail.app has given me in a mere weekend.

The recommended mailbox size limit for Tiger Mail is
2GB. Do any of 460 mailboxes approach or exceed this
    limit?
I thought this artificial limit was removed after Panther? You're saying that it still exists? I sort my mailboxes by years so they are stored in this hierarchy:
<Topic> (contains current messages about <Topic>)
    - <Topic>-200x (contains messages about <Topic> in year 200x so there could be many mailboxes at this level; when 2007 ends, I will have a <Topic>-2007 mailbox which I will move all email about this topic into, leaving the <Topic> mailbox only containing current emails for the year on that topic)
Now, this 2GB limit, is it just for the *.mbox folder or for just the Messages folder or for any hierarchy? When I do a "du -k" in some of my hierarchically filed mail, e.g., ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/Apple Lists, I get this:

Which, as you can see, totals out to around 1.26GB for the ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/Apple Lists hierarchy and none of the individual .mbox or Messages folders exceeds 2GB. And some of the above folders have been the ones exhibiting the vanishing emails (i.e., they are there when I look at something once and then they are gone the next time I try to look again in those mailboxes). I've even experienced the disappearing mailbox phenomenon in mailbox hierarchies which, in total, do not exceed 500MB for all subfolders.
The "has not been downloaded from the server" error
message is not accurate and indicates what is called
an "overstuffed" mailbox issue which means the
mailbox has approached or exceeded the recommended
size limit or the mailbox has some corruption.
Oh crap. Sigh. I never had this issue with Eudora which has a 32767 email limit regardless of size of individual emails, attachments, etc.
Using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. All
imported mailboxes are located within an Import named
folder located within the Mailboxes folder - Home >
    Library > Mail > Mailboxes > Import > imported
mailboxes - which appear as folders at the Finder
level and include an .mbox extension.
Within any .mbox folder at the Finder level is a
Messages folder (which contains each message stored
in the mailbox as a separate .emix file) and an
Info.plist file. Any other folders and file names are
left over from the import process which are not
needed by Tiger Mail but are not deleted after the
import process is complete and can sometimes cause
    problems.
Does "Rebuild" delete the Info.plist and recreate it?
There is also a Eudora mailbox cleaner utility which
    may be helpful here.
Yes, this is what I used to bring my mailboxes over from Eudora. It doesn't work very well and I'm in contact with the developer who has given me a beta to try and it's a little better.
    Do you sleep? ;~)
Rarely. I sometimes get by on 4 hours a night.
This can be done before you go to bed which will be
completed in the morning when you wake.
I was assuming that the "Remove Envelope Index" trick was to be used when in dire need, not a nightly event. Are you saying that it should be a nightly event? Sometimes it doesn't even complete, leaving some mailboxes in the same state as outlined in my original post, whereupon I have to do the "Import Mailboxes from Apple Mail" trick from within Mail.app itself but this gets old fast since I have to move the contents from the Import(-x) hierarchy to its "proper" place in my mail hierarchy and then wait for it to "rebuild" which takes a while but nowhere as long as 5 hours. Maybe 20 to 30 minutes. But multiply that by a couple of mailboxes and my day is shot.

  • Where do imported mailboxes get stored

I used a PST converter to convert my PST files to .mbox and imported those into MAC mail but after looking around, mailboxes are stored in the user/library/mail/mailboxes folder but that doesn't exist so I don't know where my imported mailboxes are currently being stored.
    Thanks

You can sometimes get the URL to the .SWF (flash) file by examinig the "Activity Window" in Safari.
Once you have your hands on the direct URL to that file, you can dump it into a HTML link tag, save as HTML and use it to download the file.
    Example:
in Textedit, open a new file, put this in it...
    This is the link
    then save as whatevername.html
Just double-click the new HTML file, Safari will open it up. Then CTRL+Click the link, and select "Download Linked File".

  • Side mailbox area in disarray

I just imported mailboxes using Eudora mailbox cleaner from TBird to Mail, but the mailboxes aren't arrayed as I would like.
If someone could tell me how to add a screen grab to a message here, I could better explain my problem with a picture...

    You’re welcome.
You appear to be confused by the names of the mailboxes. The imported mailboxes are named that way simply because that’s how they were named originally, but imported mailboxes are like any other custom mailboxes you might create manually yourself and have no special meaning as far as Mail goes. You can rename the imported mailboxes if you wish or move the messages they contain to the predefined account’s Inbox, Sent, etc. if that’s where you want them to be.
Here’s a more thorough explanation of how mailboxes are supposed to appear in Mail:
    1. Instead of grouping mailboxes by account, Mail groups mailboxes by purpose first, regardless of whether they are stored locally or on the server, then groups by account the mailboxes that don’t serve a specific purpose in Mail. If you have more than one mail account, each has its own Inbox, Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk mailboxes, which appear under the respective group showing the account name instead of the real name of the associated mailbox in the filesystem.
This has the advantage of letting you choose at any time, and independently for each mailbox, whether you want to look at your Inbox, Sent, Trash, etc. mailboxes as if you had just one of them shared by all accounts (i.e. an aggregate), or look at each of the corresponding individual mailboxes separately.
    2. Each mailbox under a pre-defined group is associated with a mailbox in the filesystem whose name may or may not be exactly the same as the name of the corresponding mailbox group. By default, the name of the actual mailboxes in the filesystem associated with Sent and Trash, for example, would be Sent Messages and Deleted Messages, respectively.
    3. The association between a mailbox in a pre-defined group and the actual mailbox in the filesystem is fixed for POP accounts, but can be changed for IMAP accounts by means of Mailbox > Use This Mailbox For or the corresponding Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors > Store messages on the server setting.
    4. Mail may defer the creation of a pre-defined mailbox until actually needed to store messages there. Also, in some circumstances Mail may be unable to create or locate the actual mailbox in the filesystem (see #10 below for an example), but the association does still exist in those cases from a logical point of view, even though Mail may be unable to display or store messages there.
    5. Each and every mailbox appears once and only once in the mailbox list, be it (1) under one of the pre-defined groups with an icon that conveys its purpose and the name of the account it belongs to (if you have more than one mail account), or (2) with a generic folder icon and the real name of the associated mailbox in the filesystem if it serves no specific purpose as far as Mail goes. Under no circumstances can the same mailbox appear both ways; it’s either one or the other, depending solely on whether it serves a specific purpose in Mail or it’s treated by Mail as a generic mailbox like any other.
    6. By itself, the name of the mailbox is no indication of whether it serves a purpose in Mail. If it appears in Mail with a generic folder icon, then as far as Mail goes it’s a generic mailbox like any other, no matter what its name.
    7. For IMAP accounts, a mailbox with a generic folder icon can “disappear” and become associated with one of the pre-defined groups as a result of changing the corresponding Store messages on the server setting in Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors or doing Mailbox > Use This Mailbox For on it (server-stored mailboxes only). This, in turn, would cause the mailbox being previously used for that purpose to become dissociated from the corresponding group and “appear” as a mailbox with a generic folder icon.
    8. In addition to the account-specific mailboxes that appear with the account name under each of the pre-defined groups, Trash and Junk may also have an “On My Mac” mailbox. This is where messages deleted or marked as junk are moved if they were previously stored in a custom “On My Mac” mailbox or in a locally stored mailbox associated with an IMAP account (i.e. a mailbox for which Store messages on the server has been turned OFF in Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors).
    9. Generic mailboxes that don’t serve a specific purpose as far as Mail goes (i.e. mailboxes that appear in Mail with a generic folder icon), appear below the pre-defined groups. In principle, “On My Mac” mailboxes (i.e. locally stored custom mailboxes) would appear as top-level folders, whereas server-stored mailboxes would appear grouped under a globe icon for each IMAP or .Mac account. However, if there is no need to differentiate between “On My Mac” and server-stored mailboxes (e.g. because you only have one IMAP account and no custom “On My Mac” mailboxes), Mail will display the server-stored mailboxes as top-level folders instead, just as if they were “On My Mac” mailboxes.
    10. Some IMAP accounts use a NAMESPACE feature that Mail doesn’t handle properly and that causes server-stored mailboxes to appear as subfolders of the account’s Inbox, even though they really aren’t — see “Can't create folders, only subfolders of INBOX” in the Courier FAQ, for example. Those IMAP accounts require INBOX to be typed in Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > IMAP Path Prefix for Mail to handle them properly.

    Ok Thank you.
    I wont worry now.
Just maybe dig in deep and delete the deleted mails that are still around and that will hopefully clean it up a bit.

  • Imported Mailboxes from Mail, but Emails Didn't Import

I am upgrading from a Mac with OS X 10.3.9 to a faster Mac with OS X 10.4.8. In doing so, I'm trying to get my Mail emails from one computer to another. I went to LIBRARY / MAIL / MAILBOXES on the old computer and copied that folder into the same spot on the new computer. Then, in Mail, I:
    • selected FILE / IMPORT MAILBOXES
    • checked "Mail for Mac OS X"
    • found the appropriate mailboxes in LIBRARY / MAIL / MAILBOXES
    • had them all checked to import, and
    • seleced "Choose"
This successfully imported all of the mailboxes. Unfortunately, it didn't import any of the emails. I saw on another posting that a bug in Mail causes the LIBRARY / MAIL / MAILBOXES folder to sometimes be a file rather than a folder, but that doesn't seem to be the case here. Any thoughts about how to get all of my emails imported?
    Thanks!
    G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Not sure what the problem is, but you did it wrong. You shouldn’t have moved the mailboxes to be imported into ~/Library/Mail/. Why did you do that? Actually, you shouldn’t have tinkered with the contents of ~/Library/Mail/ at all, amongst other reasons because ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/ is precisely where Mail would create the mailboxes resulting from the import.
Quit Mail, move the Mailboxes folder out of ~/Library/Mail/ (e.g. to the Desktop), and start over, i.e. import the Mailboxes folder that’s now on the Desktop and post back with your observations -- you may want to get rid first of any unnecessary folders that Mail may have created there.

  • Imported mailbox messages are empty

    Hi Cliff,
I haven't tried this on 10.6.x yet, so not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems in 10.4.x/10.5.x...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup),  it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move this folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.
If that doesn't do it and you can afford to redo all your Rules, try these & reboot...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist.backup

  • All e-mails in my mailboxes have been deleted.  All the mailboxes are still there but the content in them...GONE.  I tried the time machine

All e-mails in my mailboxes have disappeared.  The mailboxes are still there, but no content.  I think my behaviors were set to delete them after a month (i since tuned it off).  I tried to go to time machine and it has never been "on".  Can someone please help me retrieve ALL my e-mails that were in my mailboxes? Thank yoU!

It depends on your Mail Preferences Accounts Mailbox Behaviour settings.  If your settings for the Comcast mail account are somethikng like this you would find them in your Mail Trash folder and then you would simply move them back to the correct folders.  If you had not activated the Trash option for deleted messages and they are also no longer on the Comcast server, then they are probably erased from your system.  Using the Trash option gives you some breathing room in case you accidentally or mistakenly delete messages.
Look in your Mail folder in a Finder window.  Click on Home, open the Library folder and then open the Mail folder.  Would be nice if there’s something there to recover but I don’t think so.

  • "Import Mailbox" not available after installing Leopard - no email

The first time I opened Mail after installing Leopard. It found my accounts and folders but nothing was in them. Everything I've read says to "Import Mailboxes" from the Library, however that option isn't available to me. (it is in shadow). Should I re-install Leopard? Is there a way to re-install just the "mail" rather than the whole operating system?

Restarting the MBPr a second time after the update resolved the issue for me. I was updating from 10.10.2.
Prior to resolving this, the symptoms I experienced were a loss of the Bluetooth icon in System Preferences, and no option to search for Bluetooth devices in both the Mouse and Keyboard menus. The Bluetooth icon in the top menu bar also had a squiggly line going through it, and when clicked reported Bluetooth not available.

Have no idea whether this will help or if it's even what resolved my same recent imap problems that involved primarily *GMAIL imaps*, but it seems to be helping.
First, make sure all imap accounts are dragged up to the very top of the inbox/accounts list: *imaps above pops*
(Any IMAP accounts that have multiple folders should be at the top of the imaps).
Second, go into Mail > preference > accounts > [ each imap account ] > Advanced Tab
Above the box for the Port is *_IMAP Path Prefix_:* Type in INBOX
(reminder: If it's gmail, make sure your port is 993 and Use SSL is checked.)
Hope this helps. so far this is what seems to have helped w/mine (i have other problems such as zero results in my smart mailboxes--they no longer work).
I also have a different imap account not google/gmail and I don't use INBOX in the path prefix on that one and it has always worked just fine; the problems started with gmail imaps.
i'll be interested to know if it helps anyone else.
(Note: I manually synchronize the gmail IMAP accounts because having the auto synch box checked also seems to cause problems but your experience may vary)
    cheers!
now if anyone can tell me why after all these years apple has not fixed the lookupd / dns / network bugs that result in this (among other similar failures)

  • EMPTY IMPORTED MAILBOX

    Hi,
just moved some emails (3700inbox, 1900outbox) from Outlook (via Thunderbird), and experiencing some problems: when directly importing the .mbox file into Mail.app 300 emails are lost, though the rest are correctly in the imported mailbox. I have also used Eudora Mailbox Cleaner, as suggested, but even after "rebuilding" imported mailboxes, they are empty, without a single email.
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks,
    xavier

I have made the decision to switch to the Mail application from Thunderbird. The Mail application is version 3.5 and Thunderbird is version 2.0.0.17. I have been attempting to import the mailboxes from Thunderbird using the Mail instructions with very little success. Some mailboxes it will import all of the mail, others some of the contents and then some only the folder with no contents. There is no rhyme or reason why it works for some and not others. I have approximately 9000 emails within 120 folders on Thunderbird. I have tried importing them using the Thunderbird and Mozilla options in mail. I have also tried importing only one folder at a time with no luck and always ending with the same result for each folder. Also, Mail has repeatedly crashed while attempting the imports. Importing these mailboxes is critical for my long-term use of Mail. Any Help Offered would be greatly appreciated.

  • Missing "imported" mailbox???

    Hello,
I have just used O2M to import my old outlook emails onto my new MacBook...
But for some reason the importing of the .mbox files completes and claims to be located in a "imported" mailbox in mail.
The problem is that there is no such mailbox created???
    Can someone please help...
    Thanks,
    Dave.

The Mail Import Problem: (*The simple solution is in the last paragraph*)
Basically: (Import works fine, importing lots of O2M created .mbox files, one day, but the next day Mail's Import Wizard returns no errors at all, but never creates the Import folder (either in Mail's Mailbox sidebar, nor within the file system under ~/library/Mail/Mailboxes) and insuring that ~/library/Mail and all items under it, including ~/library/Mail/Mailboxes and its contents are all set for Owner: Read & Write, Group: Ownername, Read & Write, and logging in as an Administrator does not solve the "never created Import folder" issue).
    Detail:
O2M correctly created .mbox files from my Outlook 2002 SP-3 from my .pst default Personal Folders file. Then Mail's (at least my version 2.1.1 (752.3) for Mac OS 10.4.10) File > Import Wizard was able to read, and import, without errors, these .mbox files, multiple times, when choosing "Mail for Mac OS X" as the "Import Data From" choice. At least yesterday (11/09/2007) Importing into Mail worked without any problems.
BUT, even though it worked fine yesterday (11/09/2007), today (11/10/2007) after my Intel MacBook 13 inch 2GHz, slept overnight, I chose the same File > Import command, then as usual, "Mail for Mac OS X" as the "Import Data From" choice.
I browsed to my the .mbox file's folder, and Mail correctly showed the file it found inside the folder. I clicked the Choose button as usual.
Mail read the .mbox file, and as usual correctly displayed the name that Outlook used for it: "PersonalFolders_SentItems.mbox" and Mail put a checkmark next to it in column 1 so it would be imported.
I Clicked Continue, and the last Wizard panel appeared saying that "You will find your emails within the Import folder" but, Mail would never create the Import folder.
Trying the same process over and over again did nothing.
Note: when the Import Wizard is working correctly the creation of the Import folder occurs while still viewing this last panel of the Import Wizard, as you can see the Import folder appear in the Mailbox sidebar in Mail. Then, if the import process is lengthy, a dialog box with bar graph appears (although today, after solving the problem via using "Other" as the "Import Data From" choice, the blue bar graph appeared within this last gray Wizard panel, not in a separate white rectangular window with a blue bar graph, as I saw yesterday))).
    Solution is:
For some reason, Mail eventually gets confused and will refuse to import .mbox files if you choose "Mail for Mac OS X" as the "Import Data From" choice. The problem presents itself as running through the Import Wizard without problems, but on the last panel where it tells you that you can find your files in the Import folder, Mail never creates the Import folder.
The solution is if you run File > Import again and instead choose "Other" it will import your .mbox files without errors. In fact this was mentioned in an earlier post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3871199&#3871199
by John Sawyer1 (and confirmed by David Gimeno Gost who appeared to wonder how Mail could Import .mbox files using anything except the "Other" setting).
Users can get hung up on this because they've already confirmed that using "Mail for Mac OS X" works fine for importing .mbox files. So a day later, when the same Import Wizard stops creating Import folders they assume that they must be using the correct "Import Data From" choice. Apple needs to be less minimalistic with their Help Viewer documentation, and likewise within the Import Wizard (perhaps using yellow ToolTips mentioning the file formats that a particular Option button will be able to read when the cursor floats over each Option button).
