Embarrassed

I was actually embarrassed this weekend as I tried to show off my new iPad. The constant Wi-Fi connectivity issues caused pausing and disconnects on web pages, videos, the app store, etc.. How do you explain this to someone you want to impress? It wasn’t easy.
My Linksys WRT610N provides good coverage throughout my house. The 5GHz band on the router is N only, and 2.4GHz was set to mixed. Every device and laptop I’ve had connects everywhere with no problems.
The iPad connected to 5GHz / N just fine, but quickly began dropping the connection from only 50 feet away. Switching to 2.4GHz / mixed was better, but instead of dropping the connection, it began pausing. Again, it ranged between frustratingly slow, to unusable.
Ironically, I had to pull out my cheap netbook in order to browse the Apple forums, where I quickly found out I wasn’t alone! I tried several different things that were suggested, such as restarting /resetting the iPad, and resetting it’s network setting to default, but nothing helped. Finally, the partial solution for me was to disable mixed mode on my router. I changed the 2.4GHz band from mixed to G only, and suddenly Wi-Fi is relatively fast and solid. However, I’m still seeing fairly wild Wi-Fi signal strength fluctuations on the iPad.
Also, get this… The application eWiFi is installed on my iPad. eWiFi is a third party Wi-Fi finder. Where the iPad Wi-Fi settings don’t see wireless N in my home, eWiFi does! Very, very odd.
The changes I made are obviously only a temporary measure. Something is wrong.
How can a company like Apple manage to ship the iPad with such a defect? Amazing.

I am there with you! I was bragging about the device and showing it off, trying to make it sound like my $700 was very well spent and justified, and I could not even pull up the Apple website. How humiliating since the first time it happened it was with the person who said "Wait, because Apple always seems to have problems on their first run."
Also I'm so sick of the snarky, comments from those who aren't having this problem. If you have nothing constructive to add that actually fixes the problem then I don't understand why you need to post here telling us how great yours is working....and speaking down to us as if most of us have no clue how to operate our own wireless networks & devices.
Furthermore, with how horrible my iPad has been acting at home, in restaurants, and at work I will be returning my iPad not taking my brand new device in for troubleshooting. I expect, anything I buy to be and operate perfectly especially when spending this much money on it.
My roommate has an itouch, and it is shameful that she has no problem using her $200 device everywhere we've been since (with Wi-Fi) Saturday while just set there repeatedly trying to connect/reconnect. Seriously did apple really put a better Wi-Fi card and/antenna in the $200 itouch than they did in my $700 iPad?

    - every day at some stage(s) I have to switch computer off as Firefox has got very slow/sticky/freezes.
    I'm not techy by any means, but I can only thing of un- and re-installing to hopefully start with a clean slate.

    I have had this problem before and had to reinstall an earlier version of firefox.
    The error console has a long list of errors, many of them end with: does not implement nsIObserver. Is there a way to send the information on the error console to firefox support?
    Redownloading Firefox 4.0 will fix my problem until I either close firefox or turn off my computer. The problem recurs when I open firefox again.

    I am online everyday. I turn on my computer and click on the Firefox icon. A web browser appears but not with my Yahoo! homepage. Instead of seeing my Yahoo! homepage I see a screen that says, "Well this is embarrassing." I read that the problem is due to a recently opened tab. It gives me the options of either restoring all previously used tabs from the last time of use or starting a new session. If I choose to restore previous tabs, I am further given the option to select which tabs I want restored and which ones I don't want to restore. I always choose to start a new session because all previous tabs consist of work that I have completed in the past (whether it be yesterday or the day before). I, therefore, have no interest in restoring a tab that contained an article about our current economic situation for example. As previously stated, I choose to start a new session every time I receive the "Well this is embarrassing" error message. When I choose this option, I am brought to a fresh tab with no information regarding work, articles, or entertainment from yesterday or some time in the past. I wish to have an explanation as to why this happens. I do not go on any malicious web sites or anything of the sort. This happens every single day. The automatic error message that appears is "Well this is embarrassing." For Firefox to say "Well this is embarrassing" is not close to the response it should give.

    1. Update firefox to the latest version 2. and disable real player in menu->addons->plugins.
    Recent crashes of certain multimedia contents (this includes Youtube videos, certain flash games and other applications) in conjunction with Firefox 13 are most probably caused by a recent Flash 11.3 update and/or a malfunctioning Real Player browser plugin.

Because of this problem, I've had to even add special code letters before people's names to increase the chances of Siri getting it right, which is only about 70% of the time.

    That is not a feature of Siri. Submit your feedback requesting such a feature directly to Apple using the appropriate link on the Feedback page:

    Well i tried the Microsoft Malware and everything is fine on this end and you are still crashing on me so with that said,i am giving you one more day to resolve this issue if i still get crashes from you i am sorry to say i will have to try another company as my browser and see if i have an issue with them if i don't,i will not be reinstalling Firefox again if i do,then it may be another issue so i will have to see but i have no Malware here but thank you for your response anyway...

  • Adobe Reader - Continued Vulnerabilities - Embarrassing

    It is simply embarrassing that Adobe can't stop releasing products with so many security vulnerabilities.  Do to the latest vulnerability in 9.1, our organization of over 5000 employees will never use your product again.  Additionally, the news is spreading quickly about all the vulnerabilities in Adobe and sooner or later no one will use it or move to another solution.
    In my opinion, the only thing that developers should ever work on again in Adobe Reader is security!  We don't need new features -- all users want to do is simply view PDF files!  This should not be a hard product to secure, and it doesn't need to be 138MB to install.
    I would understand is this was an incredibly complex application to secure like a Web browser, or email client.  But this is just a program for one simple purpose -- viewing PDF files!  Focus all efforts on securing the product and nothing else.  There is no excuse for another Adobe vulnerability.
    I am a software engineer and understand that programmers are human, but the repeated flaws in your software is simply embarrassing!

    From now on focus on security in your product and nothing else whatsoever!
    If possible I would like to know who specifically is responsible for the latest fault.  They should probably be fired.
    We need to start pointing our finger at specific programmers who were at fault for vulnerabilities and have a database to search for history of faults.  Maybe this is the only thing we can do to make people care enough to design secure software.
    This is an embarrassment and Adobe's programmers should be ashamed.

    I partially agree with this post, but I seriously doubt that an organization of 5000 employees can drop software just like that - and I also seriously doubt that a software engineerhas any say in whether said organization changes software at the drop of a hat...or vulnerability in this case. Why don't you get a job at Adobe and fix it?
    You should go to www.securityfocus.com and sign up for the notification on security vulnerability events...even Symantec has vulnerabilities in it that can be exploited...I signed up for ONE day before I got tired of the amount of email traffic generated.
    There's a vulnerability, there's a work-around for it to semi-block the avenue of attack. What Adobe NEEDS to work on is not just securing their product in a more organized manner, but also provide work-arounds that can't be changed by the end-users in a business environment. What's the point of creating a GPO to fix a setting when it can be bypassed on purpose or inadvertently????

    I am embarrassed as an iPhone owner that we still have no Flash support. This is ridiculous. I am sure there are some robot answers as to why this has not happened yet. Can anyone provide me with a REAL answer. This is ridiculous.

    Without going into a debate about intellectual property and what some describe as the paradoxes thereof.
    I clicked on your profile, and it mentions you work in "Marketin and Advertising". As such you are probably familiar with the restrictions that some companies have with using their logos on web pages, print media, etc.
    Flash is like one of those logos, and Adobe controls how it is used. The analogy breaks down somewhat, because they make it easy to create content with it, but instead control what is needed to read it. Kind of like you can use our logo, but only in a way that requires our decoder ring to view. They haven't set out guidelines that would allow anyone else to make a Flash player for the iPhone in a satisfactory manner. The current options from Adobe are either Flash Lite which is designed to work in the limited user interface of most cell phones, and doesn't have all the functionality of Flash, and Flash which is designed to have relatively generous resources available on a desktop or portable computer.
    So as it stands, Adobe has said you can either have it at less than 1/8 inch (Flash Lite), or it has to be bigger than 8 inches for larger media. The problem is it is either too small, and not full useful, or its too large to allow other things to exist.

  • I'm embarrassed to ask, but...

    I feel like a blithering idiot having to ask this question but when I post a question on the Discussion Board and someone replies to my post how can I reply to them?  I set no Reply link to click.  I've had this problem for some time but I've been too embarrassed to ask for the solution.  It's good to know I'm not the only blithering idiot out there though.  I just spent over one hour on the phone with Verizon tech support and after that hour of trying they couldn't figure out how to do they reply either.
    Would someone please tell me how to do this?

    I assume this is Apple Mail. Try this:
    Preferences > Accounts > your-first-account
    Select Outgoing Mail Server of account/name you wish to use and check Use only this server
    Repeat for other accounts.

  • NoClassDefFoundError  (embarrassed)

    I'm embarrassed to post this.
    I've written a couple of Java classes. They compile. They run.
    One class I can't test "standalone", so I've written another real small class to test it. This class, MyTestA, compiles just fine but when I go to run it I get the NoClassDefFoundError. This tester is in the same directory as the other classes.
    The full message is Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: MyTestA (wrong name: com/productmanual/MyTestA)I can see the the class file in the directory. Other classes work. I'm missing something here. Scanning other posts for this error didn't show anything. The code is short and compiles:

    This is a minimal explanation of packages.

    Then a statement to compile your source file named aProgram.java is:

    And a statement to run the program is:
    java myapp.aProgram
    (This can be issued from any directory, as Java will search for the program, starting the search from the classpath directories.)
    Explanation:
    Compiling
    A class is in a package if there is a package statement at the top of the class.
    The source file needs to be in a subdirectory structure. The subdirectory structure must match the package statement. The top subdirectory must be in the classpath directory.
    So, you generate a directory structure C:\java\work\myapp\ which is the [classpath directory + the package subdirectory structure], and place aProgram.java in it.
    Then from the classpath directory (C:\java\work\) use the command: javac myapp\aProgram.java
    Running
    Compiling creates a file, aProgram.class in the myapp directory.
    (The following is where people tend to get lost.)
    The correct name now, as far as java is concerned, is the combination of package name and class name: myapp.aProgram (note I omit the .class) If you don't use this name, java will complain that it can't find the class.
    To run a class that's NOT part of a package, you use the command: java SomeFile (assuming that SomeFile.class is in a directory that's listed in the classpath)
    To run a class that IS part of a package, you use the command java myapp.aProgram (Note that this is analogous to the command for a class not in a package, you just use the fully qualified name)

I would like to use a quicktime movie on my site but I don't know how many people actually have the plug in (I've ruled out flash for now). 1. Is it possible to have a pic in place of the movie for those who don't have the plug-in so that they don't get the big blue Q?

    You can always put a line saying that they need to have QT to see the movie and provide a link to get it, if they don't have it. So that if they get the big Q they will know. Everyone has at one time or other met that even with flash. I think people are used to it now. Beside it is up to us to educate the windows crowd. I provide links to firefox and safari on every page I make.

    This happens even though the last session was closed properly. Google is set as my homepage. I only have a Norton Toolbar.
    This is not only embarrassing but highly annoying - enough to consider switching to another browser. Please help!
