Embeddable Fonts?

I downloaded some free for commercial use fonts from fontsquirrel.com. The licenses on the ones I want to embed state that they are not copy protected and are embeddable. However, when I go to place them in an edditable form field PDF file, the error message appears saying
"The selected font cannot be embedded in the PDF file because of licensing restrictions. If the PDF file is viewed on a system that does not have this font installed, Acrobat will simulate the appearance of the font. To preview the simulated font appearance, turn off Advanced > Use Local Fonts.
To avoid this situation, use a font that can be embedded in the file or a font known to be installed on all systems where the PDF file will be viewed."
Are the pre-loaded adobe fonts the only ones that can be embedded? Why would acrobat not allow me to embed a font which should be able to be embedded?
For reference, the fonts I am attempting to embed are LemonChicken and Learning Curve Pro both downloaded from FontSquirrel.

For a font to work in a form field, it has to allow editable embedding, which LemonChicken does not. I haven't checked the other, but it's probably the same.

  • Non-embeddable fonts and UTF-16

Our software allows the user to create text items, and choose a font for
them. The text may include any Unicode character (including those from
the supplementary planes with code points greater than 216), and the
font may be any of those installed on the machine.
We implement a Export-to-PDF operation which works fine with embeddable fonts, but we do not understand how we should do this in the case where the user's chosen font is not legally embeddable. The PDF specification says "If the TrueType font program is not embedded ... only predefined CMaps may be used". But there does not seem to be a predefined CMap suitable for arbitrary Unicode characters: all the CMaps which are described as accepting a UTF-16 encoding seem to be specific to either Chinese, Japanese or Korean.
We would welcome suggestions on how to proceed!

Oh - and make sure that you recommend that they contact the font foundry and complain! The more complaints they hear - it might actually get them to stop the silly non-embedding policies!

  • Embeddable Fonts for EPUB?

I'm using ID CS6 to create EPUBs. When I try to export anything other than the usual Times New Roman, or other basic fonts, the fonts don't show up in the exported EPUB.
For instance, I've tried using Minion Pro, Warnock, Lucida, etc. and all I get at the other end is either a bizarre substitution, or Times New Roman.
Every paragraph and character in my ID docs is assigned a paragragh or character style, which includes export tagging, and usually a class. I've had people on forum boards tell me I'm foolish for assigning classes, but how else are you supposed to distinguish between two h2 styles with different attributes?
Rather than place text from Word, which I've noticed imports a host of other problems on export, I copy the text into a simple text editing program, make it plain text, then copy and paste into ID, then apply styles to format. The embed fonts checkbox is checked when exporting.
What am I missing? What qualifies as an embeddable font? I should mention that I am viewing the epub in ADE. Could this be the problem?
Update: Just noticed that none of the character styles I've tagged as span are coming through either. The em and strong character styles work, but nothing tagged span will be properly styled in the EPUB. I even tried applying styling to characters without creating a style and it doesn't work. For instance, SMALL CAPS come through as small caps.

What are your export settings? Where are you viewing the EPUB? Have you cracked it open to see if there is a fonts folder? Does the CSS show the proper font.
Finally, nothing wrong with a class if it has a purpose. For main body text you can use a p tag without a class. If the first paragraph after an h2 has a special format you can use h2+p to create that stylinging in the css. Of course, this assumes a knowledge of CSS and the willingness to crack open the EPUB to work on it.

  • Embeddable fonts for epub Windows 7

    Hi,
InDesign (CS4 in my case) only allows embedding embeddable fonts in an ePub.
Looking at the Windows font folder, I see the following categories:
Blank, editable, installable, print and preview, restricted license.
Does anyone know which, if any, of these means that I can embed a font
    in an ePub?
    Thanks,
    Ariel

  • Error message: "Cannot extract embedded font..."

I have Acrobat 7.1  Professional with Windows Vista and until now have not had a problem downloading and reading any .pdf file.  Today I tried to download brochures from a company's product line web page (example: http://www.ulsinc.com/products/ils1275/) and got an error message stating "Cannot extract the embeddded font UOYPQY+MyriadPro-Bold.  Some characters may not display or print properly."
Well.that's an understatement.  Nothing but the images appear correctly.  All text appears as a string of dots.
I have combed your support pages looking for a solution to no avail.  The closest I came was a forum entry about this problem in Acrobat 8.  It points out that the problem doesn't occur in Acrobat 7.  I'm afraid it does.
All other .pdf documents both on my computer and on other websites download perfectly.
A friend tried downloading the files on his computer.  It worked perfectly.  No error message.  And all he has is Reader 9 (so do I).
I'm stumped.  Can anyone help me solve this problem?

Found this fix in Preflight: Under prepress, I selected my destination, which is sheetfed offpress (CMYK) and ran the analyze and fix. The updated file opened without the error message.

  • How to use opentype font in output designer

I have to use Kaufmannstd.otf font for my document but I am not able to add that in Presentment target. Any Idea?

The presentment target will dictate what fonts can or cannot be used.  Type 1 fonts (such as open type) are typically available in a postscript presentment target.  If you are set for pdf, the fonts will only show up in the font setup if they are in fact embeddable.  Perhaps the Kaufmannstd font is not an embeddable font.

  • Indesign CS4 - Export to SWF and font issue

    Hello,
How do you embed a font in an Indesign CS4 document when you are going to export it to an SWF file?
I have an Indesign CS4 document that uses a particular font.  This document is then exported to an SWF file which is then uploaded in our intranet website.  When users view the internal website, the SWF font uses a different font like Times New Romans.  I do not get this issue because I have the particular font used in that document installed on my machine.
Are there any work arounds for this issue other than distributing the font used in that exported SWF file?

InDesign should embedd fonts by default when exported to swf... may be you have some protected font in use? do you have problems with other fonts too? Quick and dirty workaround is convert your text to outlines... not good one but fast...

  • WMF format equations available/missing fonts not displayed/alerted

WMF format equations fonts are not displayed in the applications, If any fonts used on that equations is missing in the system the indesign will not show/alert any missing font warring to the user and the substitute fonts replaced automatically for the missing fonts, Because of this the output PDF comes with wrong fonts. How to fix the equation font missing issue in Indesign.
    Your suggestions are welcome.
    Required Details
    Indesign CS5.5
    OC - Windows XMP
    Equation Software : Math type
    Format: WMF

Best practice would be not to use WMF at all in InDesign.
WMF cannot embedd fonts, so the second best practice would be to use a WMF without live text.
Best would be to use ai or pdf files.
What other format can Math Type export?
// I did have a look on Softonic's web site. They write that Math Type can export EPS. Use that!
/// If you have also font embedding problems with EPS take care that you use fonts which allow embedding (not every font does) and put the EPS in the Distiller with some kind of setting without color conversion and make a PDF of it, then use this PDF. The PDF should be dcreated on a computer with the same fonts available which you have used with Math Type.

  • How do I solve the embedded font issue that ibook proofer does not accept?

I have several books I created in ID 6 and am now trying to prepare them to sell on iBookstore - and as others have noted ID creates a file for embedded fonts - I cannot find a way within ID to defeat this option when exporting to EPUB 3.0.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

In EPUB Exports Options/Advanced/CSS Options you could uncheck Include Embeddable Fonts.

  • Please share your PDF/UA-compliance experiences

I encourage others to share your experiences in remediating PDFs for ISO 14289 (PDF/UA) compliance. Let’s learn from each other’s experiences.
I am working with documents that previously passed the Acrobat checker and PAC 1.3 along with manual checks for WCAG 2.0 compliance – so, the documents were as accessible as I knew how to make them. Below are the errors that I am seeing quite a bit from the new PAC2 PDF/UA-compliance checker. The “fix” is not necessarily the best, just what I have found that seems to work. I am using Acrobat Pro XI.
    error: Font not embedded
fix: Tools > Print Production > Preflight > PDF fixups > Embed fonts
comment: This does not always work as some font licenses do not allow embedding. If you encounter non-embeddable fonts hopefully you have the source document and can use a different font.
error: Tagged content present inside an Artifact
fix: Open the Content pane. Open Artifact containers to find any content containers hiding inside. Drag the content containers to their proper place outside the Artifact container.
error: Alternative description missing for an annotation
fix: Add alt text to link tags.
comment: This seems an odd error. Some links benefit from alt text but others are perfectly clear without it. Seems like this should be a judgment call, but the Matterhorn Protocol insists on links having alt text.
error: Figure element on a single page with no bounding box.
fix: This error goes away if I tag the figure as an artifact, which makes sense. But if I then retag it as a figure and add back in the alt text, the error stays away.
comment: Seems odd. Even the Matterhorn Protocol PDF (http://www.pdfa.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/MatterhornProtocol_1-0.pdf) fails PAC2 on this point! This could be a rough spot in the PAC2 beta, not a real error, but is easy enough to “fix”.
error: DisplayDocTitle key is not set to true
fix: File > Properties > Initial View tab > In the Show drop down box, select “Document Title”
    error: PDF/UA identifier missing
fix: Create an xmp file that includes the required snippet of metadata (example: http://bygosh.com/files/pdfuaid.xmp). Then: File > Properties > Description tab > Additional Metadata... > Advanced > Append
comment: This should be the final remediation step, after the document is otherwise PDF/UA-compliant. To apply the PDF/UA ID to a document that is not compliant would be fibbing.

    Hi Wendy,
The requirement that all links include alternate text in the Contents key is frustrating ...
To the best of my knowledge, no current AT makes use of the Contents key alt text
No current tool makes it easy to create and configure the Contents key. To do so manually with a long set of links such as a table of contents is time consuming.
In a well-written document, link text is often quite clear in context, and alt text provides no benefit in terms of accessibility. This is almost certainly the case with a table of contents.
So, you have to make a choice. You can ...
Ignore this particular PDF/UA criterion and somehow live with the resulting scolding from PAC2.
Apply regular alt text to the links. This makes PAC2 happy but PAC 1.3 unhappy.
Patiently wait for the opportunity to shell out big bucks for a new tool that automates setting the link Contents key, like the "coming soon" PDF Global Access (new version of CommonLook with a new name) from NetCentric.
Bite the bullet and set the Contents key for each link tag manually. It is a bit intimidating at first to delve into the innards of the tag structure and make changes, but you will quickly gain experience and comfort level. This is the best solution if  you, like me, obsess with making both PAC2 and PAC 1.3 say "Pass". Just be sure, as always when working with Acrobat, to save early and often to a new file name, in case something goes horribly wrong.
If you choose the last bullet, the PDF/UA Reference Suite includes example TOCs. As to what should be entered for "Value", for external links I typically use the title of the target page. For TOC entries, following the examples in the PDF Reference Suite, the Contents key value mirrors the text of the link, for example "Chapter 1: Introduction".
    Hope this helps.

  • Incorrect images from .indb file export to ePub in Indesign CS6

I am having problems exporting images to ePub and get a different result from the same file depending on whether I export directly from the .indd file or from the .indb file.
When I export to ePub from the individual chapter (.indd) file, everything is fine and the images appear in the correct locations where they have been anchored.
When I export via the book  (.indb) file, images are being replaced with the incorrect file in the resulting ePub.
Looking at the HTML, it seems not all images are being exported from the .indb file and when the image is missing, Indesign is substituting the next available image from the alphabetical list in the images folder so I'm getting incorrect images peppered throughout the book.
Any idea where I've gone wrong and how to fix it? I've produced several ePubs with images and never come across this before.
More details on how I've set up the files and any other info I think might be relevant below if needed.
    - I'm using Indesign CS6 (8.0.1)
    - I'm producing an 11 chapter book.
    - Each chapter is a separate .indd file for ease of editing.
    - These 11 files have been added to an .indb file for export to ePub.
    - Images are all anchored to their captions within the text.
    - On Export to ePub settings for images I have selected to insert a page break before the image and that settings apply to anchopred objects.
Nothing else is selected (I don't want to preserve appearance from layout.)
    - I'm using the Articles panel feature for order of content.
    - In the original file supplied, the images were placed as .tiff images. I saved them to jpeg and relinked them using the "relink to folder" and "match same file but this extension" options.
    - No links are flagged as missing.
    Any help much appreciated.

The solution points to how, it appears, the book panel export is functioning: each file exports a set of tags referenced to itself; file01 adds a "1" to its tags, and so forth. What I was able to do was use a file referencing all of the tags in the style suite in two ways:
    first, I exported to an epub the single file, creating a fairly clean CSS, which I then extracted and renamed;
    then, making certain that file was the "source" file in the book panel, I mapped for export all of the tags, being careful to be certain each tag/class combo was same as in renamed clean CSS;
    I synchronized the whole shebang;
I exported to epub, adding my clean CSS as an external style sheet, selecting only "include embeddable fonts".
    Bingo!

  • Converting word 2003 document to pdf

I need to convert a word document to pdf to load to the lulu
web site which is a book publishing site. They have specific
settings like embedd fonts but no subset embedding. For images use
zip compression and 300 dpi. I have set all of these in the
distiller and from word I print to Adobe pdf. My file size is 384MB
in word and when converted it is 5876MB
What can I do to decrease the file size? The only fonts being
used are Times New Roman and Arial. When I open the word document
with Adobe Acrobat Professional and save it is considerably
smaller, however I am not sure what settings are being used.
Printing to a printer, I can click the adobe distiller and select
the settings and save with a specific name. I do not know how to
choose particular settings when opening a word document in Adobe
    Acrobat and saving as pdf.
How do I tell what settings in Adobe distiller are creating
the HUGE file size? Thank you.

Meantime - if you animate regular text and use STATIC font,
    you don't need to embed
anything. Make sure text is not set to DYNAMIC.

  • PDFA and Extended Rights

Our company is switching to pdfa standards for the purpose of archiving.  We have several forms that the public uses that are currently fillable forms with extended rights turned on so that users with only reader can save the form.  Can someone tell me if pdfa documents, can be forms and if they can have extended rights for reader, or can reader save/print the document as pdfa?
    Thank you
    Paul Washburn

Some of the replies so far aren't entirely accurate, so allow me to clarify:
Firstly, fillable PDF form fields are permitted in PDF/A-1 and PDF/A-2 documents under the ISO 19005 standards, provided they don't use XFA (dynamic form fields created in LiveCycle). Normal text fields, etc. created in Adobe Acrobat are fine, provided the font used within any text fields can be fully embedded. You can't certify a document with a signature as that applies encryption.
When a conforming application opens a PDF/A file with form fields, it is required to open the form in read-only mode, and display the entered data as page objects rather than interactive fields. This is what will happen by default in Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader when PDF/A Mode is active (blue message bar).
If you turn PDF/A View Mode off under Preferences>Documents, the form fields return to being editable. There is no need to flatten the form in order to save it into PDF/A format.
It's not completely trivial, as there are some common issues you can fall foul of. One is with the base-14 fonts (helvetica, times roman, etc) which are part of Acrobat (and used to be in Reader), but are not necessarily installed on your operating system. These cannot be embedded after the fact as there's no 1:1 match with the font names on your computer, so if you have a text field that uses "helvetica" (which is the default) and you try and save to PDF/A, you'll usually get a failure. Running the Standards panel under Preflight in Acrobat Professional will reveal it's the font embedding that stops you, so during construction of the form you must make sure that you use embeddable fonts for every field, or use Preflight to change them after receiving the returned form. There's also a hassle with checkboxes and radio buttons due to the way Acrobat internally stores data about their appearance.
Adobe Reader cannot save a "normal" PDF document as a PDF/A file, and unless a PDF document was originally created with PDF/A in mind it's almost impossible to convert it to PDF/A-1a retrospectively. However you can create a PDF/A-1a file (for example using the PDFMaker plugin for Word), bring that into Acrobat Pro, turn off PDF/A View Mode, add the form fields and save it as a non-PDF/A file again, applying Reader Extensions as necessary*. You need to do this as the PDF/A View Mode in Adobe Reader takes priority over the presence of fillable forms, so your recipients won't be able to fill anything in.
*For reference, a Reader Extended file can also be PDF/A compliant - it's just not very useful because the blue bar beats the purple bar. If you can convince everyone working with your forms to disable PDF/A View Mode, you can keep the entire workflow as PDF/A so you don't need to process the files you get back. Reader can't make a normal PDF into a PDF/A, but if it's already compliant, saving a copy with filled-in fields doesn't break the compliance.
Once the filled form is returned and opened in Acrobat, you can re-save that "normal" PDF into PDF/A again. As the structure of the file was already compliant, and the only change will be the content of the form fields, it will convert just fine. The resulting PDF/A file still has an "editable" form in it, but with PDF/A View Mode active the fields will display read-only.
Here's an example of a PDF/A-1a file which is also a Reader-Extended form, after being filled in using Adobe Reader (with PDF/A View Mode turned off under Preferences>Documents). If you open it with PDF/A Mode active it'll be read-only, but disable PDF/A Mode and it's back to being a form again.
