Embedded file as an icon in Word to PDF
When we send proposals to customers, our standard policy is to send them in PDF format. The proposal template is a Word document. However, on occassion, we need to embedd information Word documents into the proposal as an icon in the template. When the proposal is converted to PDF, the embedded document cannot be accessed. Is there a way to do this? Right now, we are send these particular proposals as protected Word docs, but would prefer to send them as PDF files. Sample doc attached.
There's no embedded document in the PDF. Just the image of the icon.
However, you can attach the Word document to the PDF, and it might even be possible to launch it by clicking on this icon, but that requires some scripting knowledge.

The installation of Acrobat trial version for 30 days seemed to succeed but after making a pdf file I could not save it into my own libraries on my computer. In the first case the system told that the trial time is over! How come? I had just installed it. Then I tried again, but now the system is requiring a "serial number". Then it said that I can find it there and there. I tried to log in there but it did not accept my password which I had just used. Ok. I changed the password and it was accepted by Adobe. But I never got any serial number anywhere. Then I tried to install Acrobat through another way. I have had Adobe Cloud and Premiere already for years. I tried to load Acrobat through there. I succeeded, but same problem again: "The trial time is 00 days". Then I also noticed that my old Adobe Reader has vanished somewhere. I could not open any pdf files I have received and opened before. I tried to re-install the Reader. No success because "the trial time is over" !!! What should I do? Maybe I can try to ask my friends to change the Word files into the pdf-versions but I need my Adobe Reader!
Hi, Ashish,
I do not understnd what means through CC package under exception folder. I
think I went to Google and found this page:
https://www.acrobat.com/en_us/free-trial-download.html . After the
installing, which seemed to be successful, I brought in a Word file and made
the exchange into pdf. It seemed to be ok, but I could not save it anywhere
into my own libraries or maps. The system told me that the trial time is
over (!). Then I went into my Abobe Creative Cloud because I have already
Premier Pro and Premeir Pro CC. Through the list overt there I tried to do
the installation again. I do not remember anymore what I got in the first
place, maybe it was the same Your trial time has 00 days or something like
that. Then I was asked to get the serial number I clicked the button but
the reply was the same Your trial time has 00 days, or maybe there was
some other demands before that. Impossible to remember anymore.
Then I also noticed that I dont have Adobe Reader anymore; I could not read
any pdf files I had before. Everytime jumps up the message Your trial time
has 00 days.

Indesign/Acrobat PDF - embedded link file(word, excel, pdf)
Hi,
In the microsoft word, we can embedd, the pdf, word or excel files as link, so that when you click the embedded file (for eg. if you click the pdf icon of embedded file in word, the pdf file will open, as same as the word files and excel files will open) . There is will no seperate link files will be there. (so from a word doc embedded with pdf files and excel files will be opened from the word itself)
Is there any option to do like this in Indesign or Pdf, where we can embedd the Link files inside the indesign, without linking the files from the hard dirve or server.
Any idea about this? You people understand what i am trying to say?Acrobat Pro has an Attachements navigation panel that you can add (embed) files that will open in their native application when clicked to open.
InDesign can do something similar... you can embed files via the Links panel... you can also edit original (but you might need to unembed it first.
Not on a computer with InDesign right now, I will check tommorrow. -
Convert .doc file with embedded file(s)
Dear all,
I have around 1 million documents that need to convert from .doc / .xls to PDF, and I've found that some .doc files embedded with other files into it, like a .doc inside another .doc, or .xls inside another .doc, for those files, after converted them using LC PDFG, the embedded files will become an icon image, is there any methods to convert those documents so that the embedded files are also "attached" inside the result PDF? Thanks!
Regards,
BearyungHi Joel,
The feature you are looking for, is currently not available in Acrobat.
But you can create an interactive link (to open Word/Excel) using Acrobat. Please look at the following link:

Reasons why Reader couldn't open Embedded file?
Installed the Writter in my computer. With file attachment tool, I embedded a file into a pdf file and send this pdf file to a colleague with only Reader installed in the computer. But he couldn't open the embedded file, why?
In other words: your file associations are messed up. See http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/change-file-open-program#1TC=windows-8

Can this be done?

I have most of what I need here, but I’m missing 2 important pieces.
#1) I want to copy/paste from all PDF files in a folder and paste the copied data into a single Word file.
It works fine if I have ONLY Word docs in my folder. When I have PDF files and Word files, the contents of the Word files are copied in fine, but the contents of the PDF files seem to come in as Chinese, and there is no Chinese in
the PDF, so I have no idea where that’s coming from.
#2) I want to extract all embedded files (in all my Word files) and save the extracted/opened file into the folder. Some embedded files are PDFs and some are Excel files.
Here the code that I’m working with now.
Sub Foo()
Dim i As Long
Dim MyName As String, MyPath As String
Application.ScreenUpdating = False
Documents.Add
MyPath = "C:\Users\001\Desktop\Test\" ' <= change this as necessary
MyName = Dir$(MyPath & "*.*") ' not *.* if you just want doc files
On Error Resume Next
Do While MyName <> ""
If InStr(MyName, "~") = 0 Then
Selection.InsertFile _
FileName:="""" & MyPath & MyName & """", _
ConfirmConversions:=False, Link:=False, _
Attachment:=False
Dim Myshape As InlineShape
Dim IndexCount As Integer
IndexCount = 1
For Each Myshape In ActiveDocument.InlineShapes
If Myshape.AlternativeText = PDFname Then
ActiveDocument.InlineShapes(IndexCount).OLEFormat.Activate
End If
IndexCount = IndexCount + 1
Next
Selection.InsertBreak Type:=wdPageBreak
End If
On Error Resume Next
Debug.Print MyName
MyName = Dir ' gets the next doc file in the directory
Loop
End Sub
If this has to be done using 2 Macros, that’s fine.
If I can do it in 1, that’s great too.
Knowledge is the only thing that I can give you, and still retain, and we are both better off for it.Hi ryguy72,
>>When I have PDF files and Word files, the contents of the Word files are copied in fine, but the contents of the PDF files seem to come in as Chinese, and there is no Chinese in the PDF, so I have no idea where that’s coming from.<<
Based on the code, you were insert the file via the code Selection.InsertFile. I am trying to reproduce this issue however failed. I suggest that you insert the PDF file manually to see whether this issue relative to the specific file. You can insert PDF
file via Insert->Text->Object->Text from file.
If this issue also could reproduced manually, I would suggest that you reopen a new thread in forum to narrow down whether this issue relative to the specific PDF file or Word application.
>> I want to extract all embedded files (in all my Word files) and save the extracted/opened file into the folder. Some embedded files are PDFs and some are Excel files.<<
We can save the embedded spreadsheet via Excel object model. Here is an example that check the whether the inlineshape is an embedded workbook and save it to the disk for you reference:
If Application.ActiveDocument.InlineShapes(1).OLEFormat.ClassType = "Excel.Sheet.12" Then
Application.ActiveDocument.InlineShapes(1).OLEFormat.DoVerb xlPrimary
Application.ActiveDocument.InlineShapes(1).OLEFormat.Object.SaveAs "C:\workbook1.xlsx"
Application.ActiveDocument.InlineShapes(1).OLEFormat.Object.Close
End If
And since the Word object model doesn't provide API to save the embedded PDF, I would suggest that you get more effective response from PDF support forum to see whether it supports automation. If yes, we can export the PDF as embedded spreadsheet like code
absolve.
Hope it is helpful.

Is it possible to convert a Word document with embedded files?
I am using Acrobat 8 Professional and have tried converting a word file, which contains embedded word, excel and pdf files within it. The document converts but the embedded files are not accessible. I have tried converting the document using print and also the 'Convert to adobe' button in
Word.
I saved the embedded files separately is they are, i.e. Word, Excel, or pdf and also saved them all as pdf's and then manually inserted them into the converted file using the Link button. I can open the embedded files, but when I send the converted document to others, they cannot open the files. Has anyone found a solution or maybe it's not possible with this version of Acrobat.
Thanks.Hi uois21,
Would you send your document as an email attachment?
I will check it from my end.Please add the link to this forum post for reference.
I have sent you my contact details on your email id.

Word and Excel file and folder icons missing in File Open dialog box
Running office 365 on Windows 7 Pro: In Word and Excel, when opening and browsing for files in the file Open dialog box, all file and folder icons are missing. This problem does not occur within Windows Explorer.
Can you open Word/Excel files normally?
Go to File>Advanced>Disable hardware graphics acceleration
Start Office in safe mode to troubleshoot the issue:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-001/support/why-cant-i-start-my-office-2013-application-HA104011864.aspx
If the issue persists, do a repair for your Office suites in Control panel>Program and features>Office>Change>Repair

Is there a way to view embedded files in a Word doc that you have PDF'd?
We embed as objects different types of files (i.e, pdf, excel, etc.) into our word documents. When those documents are PDF'd, you cannot open the files as they become pictures. Is there anyway I can have the embedded files open in PDF as they do in the Word document?
You can embed PDF file in word document by converting PDF to Doc, for this conversion you need PDF to Doc converter.
Or you can also embed PDF file in word as image by convert PDF to Image and attach image of PDF page in Doc, for this conversion you need PDF to Image converter.
There are many PDF converter available on web that can perform this conversion like Adobe Acrobat, Nitro and Classic PDF etc. I am using classic PDF, it can easily perform both of above conversion along with many other features. It is reliable and afordable PDF software.

Blank/Generic Icons for Word & RTF files - a rant
I can't understand why such a simple thing can be made so difficult. If you have .RTF and .DOC files all set to open with Pages, then they have the blank/generic icon. Ofcourse you can change the icon manually but this isn't exactly a solution as you would need to do it everytime you create a new file.
What also gets me is that if you did happen to have WORD on your machine, and you still wanted .doc files to open with pages, the icon for those files would still be blank even though there's an icon right there on your machine especially for those types of files. The only way to get a word icon for word files is to have them opening all the time with Word.
This is the same with RTF files, textedit has an icon for RTF files, but because you want to edit them in Pages you have to put up with a blank icon because there isn't an icon for RTF files inside the Pages package.
I know Mac users tend to scoff at Windows users and vica versa. But, in this instance it's laughable that such a simple thing is made almost impossible to the average user.
It's not much to ask, the ability to specify that all .doc and .rtf files have X icon.I think the logic is that Pages doesn't ever "save" .doc or .rtf. Pages can "export to", but that's not good enough for some reason.
You cannot say: "This .rtf is a Pages rtf-file. I use Pages do open it and Pages to save it." The only thing you can say is "This .rtf will open with Pages, and then I will have to choose myself which format to save or export to."
One doesn't have to agree with that logic of course. -
How does Word open embedded files?
can Word in Office for Mac open embedded files?
Hi,
have you sent a public link to the other user who needs to make changes?. They wont be able to do this. A Creative Cloud Collaboration would need to be set up for the other user to be able to edit these files. Creative Cloud Help | Collaboration FAQ
I hope this helps.
Thanks

MacBook Air with Mavericks. I need to download agendas with embedded files. This is through an encrypted email account. My Mac is blocked from even opening the embedded files on line and I can't save any of this to my laptop. It works fine on my PC laptop. Help please. I know this is a problem for other people too, but would love the solution!
Gee, Pat, this is a real big help.
Nobody could possibly think anyone would ask for help without first trying to fix the issue oneself. Or maybe you do. I have opened the file and looked under security. I have changed it to owner-notebook (which is what the techs called me) and clicked accept but geepers it didn't work.
Maybe someone else has an idea.
Take Ownership of a File or Folder
The above should be a link. At least I copied and pasted the link. I did what was stated in there. It isn't like brain surgery. But it is not working. I ended up being able to open some pdf files after transferring them from one partition category to another. I wish it was that easy as you seem to think.
Thanks for the help. Have a great year. -
My mac is becoming too slow. It takes long to open word documents, pdf files or excel documents or even safari. Can anybody suggest something? I have tried to reduce the number of open applications, but does not seem to work.
Hi ...
Checked to see how much free space there is on the startup disk lately?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
Freeing Up Hard Disk Space - Mac GuidesFreeing Up Hard Disk Space - Mac Guides
If disk space is not the issue, booting in Safe Mode deletes system caches that may help.
A Safe Mode boot takes longer then a normal boot so be patient.
Once you see the Desktop, click the Apple menu icon top left corner of the screen.
From the drop down menu click Restart.
See if that makes a difference ...
