Embedded font - blurry quality

I have embedded a font in flex3, with size of 8px, advanced
antialiasing true, sharpness: 100. It is not rendered very clear.
It seems to be a little bit blurry. Does anyone know if flex3 is
rendering all of the fonts how they are?
Or maybe the developers need to work more and to fix the
quality in next versions of flex?
This is my code:

• Embeded fonts question

Can anyone asnwer the following regarding embedded fonts in a Flex 4 application (component):
1. Is the font file the same for Macintosh and Windows-based machines?
2. Do embedded fonts look as good as system fonts?
Thanks.

I'm not sure I understand #1. Data from the font file specified is copied
into the SWF and used by the player to render fonts on all platforms. The
OS is not handed the file to do the font rendering.
Embedded fonts are the only way to guarantee consistency between platforms
and machines. If someone doesn't have the font you want to use, on most
OS's you will get some approximation of the font. Embedded font display
quality is not controlled by font-smoothing options on the user's machine.
You should see what a non-embedded font looks like when rotated on XP with
font-smoothing off.

• Converting Embedded fonts in Word 2010

Need help converting Word 2010 doc to pdf. Doc has an embedded font that is not installed on my computer. Tried doc in PDF complete and the font converts to PDF fine, but the quality output is a little blurry in heighest print quality. Is there a way Acrobat XI Pro can convert so I can get a sharp quality readable document?

I am assuming the font is embedded in the WORD file. I would hope that just printing would include the font unless it is not licensed for embedding (something that MS might likely ignore, but Adobe does not). What version of Acrobat are you working with and what OS? You can check for embedding in the document properties font tab (ctrl-D).

• Why do PDFs created with some print presets show the error message "cannot extract embedded font."

Whenever I create a pdf from InDesign using a press-quality preset, I get an error message upon opening the file. The error message says that an embedded font cannot be extracted.
InDesign indicates the font is not present in the file.
In Acrobat's properties, the font in the error message is listed and shows that it is not embedded, and that the actual font is unknown.
Running the "embed fonts" from preflight fixups doesn't help.

Found this fix in Preflight: Under prepress, I selected my destination, which is sheetfed offpress (CMYK) and ran the analyze and fix. The updated file opened without the error message.

• Fully embedding fonts in PDF

Hi,
I had a piece of information but I can't seem to find it anymore so I have to ask ...
This is about understanding limitations of fully embedding fonts in a PDF (from Indesign Server). Actually it's about one limitation in particular. I know fonts with licensing issues or fonts that are marked "embedded not allowed" will not be embedded. Also, there is a threshold that I need to set.
So, I recall reading somewhere that Indesign will not fully embed "standard" fonts. Is that correct and what is this standard fonts category?
Oh, reading through some posts, I noticed lots of people and experts ask why does one need fully embedded fonts. That's a good question and I don't know the root reason but in my case it seems that some regulatory agencies (in the life sciences/pharma domain) require PDFs with fully embedded fonts.
Many thanks
Cristian

On behalf of Adobe:
(1) For both InDesign “PDF export” (including InDesign Server) and Illustrator “save as PDF” functions, most but not all of the .joboptions file font embedding options are totally and utterly ignored. The options that are ignored are the Embed all fonts, Embed OpenType fonts, Always embed, and Never embed. Those options are observed by Distiller and the PDFMaker components of Acrobat.
(2) These applications will attempt to embed all fonts referenced by the document, regardless of the settings of the .joboptions file. The only reason why a font would not be embedded in a PDF file would be if (a) the font was unavailable (i.e., not installed on the system) or (b) the font's embedding permissions do not permit embedding for at least preview and print privileges. Thus, if you use the so-called Standard .joboptions (strongly not recommended for any graphic arts purposes), even the base 14 fonts (four faces each of Helvetica, Times, and Courier along with Symbol and ITC Zapf Dingbats will be embedded if your document references them.
(3) The subset threshold value of 0 (zero) may effectively cause all the glyphs of a font to be embedded in some, but not all cases. This will work for many if not most Type 1 fonts and some smaller TrueType and OpenType CFF fonts. Note that embedding all glyphs in a font is not the same as embedding a full font. For OpenType and TrueType fonts, InDesign and Illustrator never embed all the tables of the font. Such unembedded tables include those used for pair kerning, advanced OpenType features (such as ligatures, alternate representations, contextual alternates, small caps, old style figures, etc.), and extended metrics.
(4) There are plenty of bubbameissas out there with regards to the benefits or liabilities of either fully embedding or subset embedding fonts. What is true is that: (a) Acrobat never uses the embedded font for text editing - you must have the font installed on the system in order to do such edits. (b) Subset embedding or not is totally irrelevant to what a RIP does when rendering text, either for PostScript or direct PDF RIPs. Neither subset or full embedding is any more reliable than the other and the specifications of PostScript and PDF do not permit the RIP to replace the embedded font with a font with a similar name - urban legend notwithstanding!!!! (c) Third party plug-ins to Acrobat or applications that claim to allow you to edit PDF files with embedded fonts may be illegally letting you do so if the embedding permissions do not permit embedding for editable embedding or installable embedding - most fonts do not provide such embedding permissions and since the fonts are missing metric information, such editing may be somewhat lacking in quality or features.
(5) In fact some very non-tech-savvy organizations have posted requirements for full embedding of fonts in submitted PDF files (I have personally seen one such requirement by some international bureaucracy). They can post such bone-headed requirements based on limited understanding of PDF and PDF workflows, but that doesn't mean that anybody actually provides such PDF files. If in fact you run into such requirements, I would appreciate it if references to same can be forwarded to my attention by private message on these forums.

• Placed PDF (with embedded fonts) reports fonts not available!

Hi,
Can anyone tell me why Illustrator CS (I know it's old) should report Fonts missing when the PDF I have placed has definately got the fonts embedded.
The PDF was made in InDesign CS4 using the default [High Quality Print] setting. If I look at the properties of the created PDF it lists all the fonts as being embedded subsets.
I know I can get around this by outlining the text but I shouldn't have to.
Thanks
Simon Kemp

So, Illustrator will always require the fonts present and will disregard any embedded fonts?
That's pretty much it. Remember: Illustrator is not a PDF viewing program. It wants to let you edit the document. PDF is essentially a document exchange format and not really intended for editable content (beyond the extent Acrobat enables). Font designers want you to buy their products if you're going to be doing anything other than reading the text.
The link-place-flatten trick is good to have in your bag of tricks, but I am not alone in recommending you do not blindly outline all type. Aside from making it nearly impossible for an output service provider to make a possibly necessary last-minute correction, you will not get the proper hinting with very small type. Moreover, if you're dealing with a large amount of text, you'll end up with huge files.

• PDF optimiser - Embedded Fonts.

Hi,
I'm looking at optimising my PDF files to make them smaller but retain quality. I've looked at the embedded fonts and found 2 different fonts. If I remove or unemded one font, would it change the other text to the embedded font? The file I ave is a large map, and I've edited the text I will use but would like all text to be the same, would the embedded tool do this for me? If not what would happen if I unemded a font?
Thank You

If its a Font family not associate with the original document Go ahead and remove.
Also you can remove all but one copy of a given style of font.
say you have 5 copies of ITC Benguiat Book, 3 copies of ITC Benguiat Bold, 2 Copies of ITC Benguiat Italic
remove all but one copy of each. Must have one of each style you have
If you had the above fonts (example) and also had a copy of Helvetica , or New times Roman and it wasn't used in original Document Remove them.
To be on safe side I would save the optimized version with a slightly different name. That way if it doesn't look right you will have original to fallback on.

• Remove an embeded font from a PDF

Hi Guys
I have a bunch of PDF's where I need to remove a sertant font due to Copyright reason.
When I use the PDF optimizer and unembed the font, it replaces the font with another all over the PDF, but when I open the optimized PDF and check the properties, it still says that the font is
embeded.
How can I completly remove the embeded font? and is there a way, where I can choose the substitude font?
Another solution would offcourse be, to transform all the text to pictures, but the quality is simply to bad to use.
I am using Adobe Pro IX for Windows 8.1 (64 bit)

Why do you think it's still embedded?
It will appear on the File Properties > Fonts list because it's defined as the typeface to use in preference when rending the file, but unless the entry says it's embedded, it's only a reference to the name.

• Aliased Embedded Fonts

Is it possible to embed a font in Flash and have it displayed as though it was a device font? In other words, can embedded fonts be aliased?
Using the bitmap-text option doesn't work, Flash tends to screw up a lot of the character spacing. I haven't found any pixel fonts that mimic Arial, Verdana and Tahoma accurately. Setting the stage quality to low does alias the fonts but they become fragmented.
Using device fonts is an option but, as far as I understand, some browsers/operating systems will take it upon themselves to anti-alias the text.

Because some common device fonts below a certain size aren't very legible when they are anti-aliased, and some fonts including Verdana and Courier New just look horrible when anti-aliased, most developers would know that. Device fonts below a certain size aren't anti-aliased in Flash on Windows (not sure about Mac) but I would like to embed the fonts to ensure they are available regardless of the operating system. I know this is an old problem with Flash but I was hoping the new text rendering features in FP10 would have solved the problem... I guess not.

• Embedding fonts in Bridge (Photoshop CS5)

Hi folks!
I'm sorry for posting but I still have trouble with creating PDF via Bridge.
I have sveral PSD-Files (CS5 made) using several image- and textlayers.
Now I want to create multipage-PDF using Bridge that comes with PS CS5.
Works fine so far but Bridge does not embed those fonts used in the PSD!
Seems to me Bridge just merges all layers to one pixelbased image and saves it in PDF-format.
But that's no good deal!
In CS2 there was a much better solution in PS2 allowing to create multipaged PDF with embedded fonts.
Is there any chance to embed fonts with Bridge?
Plz don't tell me to use Acrobat or InDesign because I'm only using PS CS5.
Thx!

The problem is that i need to embed fonts, by this fontFamily="Arial" you can set font name which you want, but if i set font name which is embedded it won't work, like : fontFamily="ttf"
the embedded code is :
[Embed(source='/Resources/majallab.ttf',fontName='ttf',mimeType='application/x-font',embed AsCFF='true')]
var font1:Class; //This is only used to compile the code
I use Flex SDK 4.5,
what can i do ?
Thank you in advance,

To use embedded fonts in a Flex component, the fontFamily for the component needs to be set to an embedded font that is in the same SWF as the other embedded fonts in the TextFlow. See my blog for more details

• How can I create a PDF with embedded fonts (not a subset of the font) from Excel?

I need to create PDF's from Excel spreadsheets. The PDF needs to have embedded fonts but every time I create one it only has a subset of the embedded font. I have tried setting preferences in the Acrobat add in (unchecked the "Subset Embedded Fonts" option and also tried with the Subset Embedded Fonts checked but the percentage set to only 1% in an attempt to force full font to be embedded.)
I also tried opening the resulting PDF with Acrobat Pro XI but could not figure out how to add the font in.
A method to accomplish the results from either tool would be great.

Anna;
Unless you can add those fonts to your system via the Font book and then substitute them in iPhoto, you'll have to either user the available fonts or create your own pages, 8.5 x 11, in an image editor like Photoshop Elements and use them on pages that are one photo per page. Other's have done that with some success.
If you has PS or PSE create an 8.5 x 11" canvas at 300 dpi. Then you can add your photos, add text (if PS can use the text), and create your own layout.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
