Any help is much appreciated!!!

Hi,
According to your description, this issue only occur with Excel 2013 file that embedded Word 2010 file. There Word 2010 file also could open well with Other computer.
Thus, we may do more test. Please try to copy the content of Word 2010 file and paste to a new Word 2013 file. Then embed to Excel 2013 to test. If Excel 2013 could open it, I suppose there are some compatibility issue between Word 2010 and 2013. We'd
better use compatibility Check to check the content of these Word 2010 file.
If this issue still exist, would you like share us a sample Excel with embedded Word 2010 file through OneDrive if possible. I want to test in my environment.

• Adobe Reader for Android to play video embedded in a PDF document.

I am a medical teacher. A large part of my teaching is technical and skills based and I have a lot of teaching video material. I distribute my material to my students as PDF documents with embedded videos. They can presently only read this on their PCs. It would be wonderful if I could place that material in a 7 inch Android tablet in their coat pockets. They could review a "how to" video and text immediately before perfoming a medical procedure. It is so easy and fast to prepare a Word text document, convert it to PDF embedded with a simple cropped video clip. Also the original word document can be updated in moments and be converted into a fresh PDF with video in a minute later to replace the one on the student computer or tablet whenever. This makes the teaching material a living text easy to keep permanently up to date. To date I have not managed to find an eReader or Tablet that that I could play an video embedded in a PDF document. The problem is Adobe Reader for Android doesn't do this. Does anyone know of any other easy way to produce documents with embedded video that can also be read on a pocket size tablet or eReader? Is Adobe going to upgrade Adobe Reader for Android to this ability sometime? Is there any other PDF reading app that can play embedded video?

GoodReader ($4.99), ezPDF Reader ($2.99) and PDF Expert ($9.99) are well rated and support many more features.

• Issues embedding swf in pdf document?

I have created a small application to illustrate Snell's law as a flash file.
The idea is to integrate it in a online educational book and I have already done so with several simple animations.
This was to be my first application with user input other than start/stop buttons.
The application works fine in a browser or as a stand-alone flash file but when I embed it in the pdf file it doesn't execute properly, nothing happens when buttons are pushed to calculate the equations.
This is my first question here so I don't know how to add my application or an example of it embedded in a pdf document but I guess including them from a filehosting site could work?
The swf file:
http://www.filehosting.org/file/details/408159/Snells_Law.swf
The PDF file:
http://www.filehosting.org/file/details/408160/test.pdf
I used CS6 Flash professional to create the SWF file.
thanks in advance
edit: also including the original fla-file: http://www.filehosting.org/file/details/408478/Snells_Law_3.fla
By moving a piece of code up through the lines I have found that after line 377, nothing gets executed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I see no syntax errors and your code works well so there shouldn't be any issue embedding it. In Acrobat XI I get a preview of the plugin required to view the SWF and I must activate the plugin (very common on windows) by clicking on it. Once I do the SWF embedded in your document works for me, although it doesn't overlap the preview which is stretched to the size of the page whereas the plugin container is the size of the original document. So it works fine for me when viewing as a PDF and if you resize it down to its original document size it should overlap the preview properly. Plugin containers often require permission/activation (a mouse click), that's normal.
I was able to target 10.1/10.2 as the SWF export target rather than FP11. You may want to try downgrading your publish preferences to that which should reduce the overhead of the plugin container. Outside that I see no reason you should have an issue embedding this. I don't have a full copy of master at home to create the PDF to test (openoffice isn't really capable of it) so you'll have to test that yourself but the PDF you linked works for me.

• Fully embedding fonts in PDF

Hi,
I had a piece of information but I can't seem to find it anymore so I have to ask ...
This is about understanding limitations of fully embedding fonts in a PDF (from Indesign Server). Actually it's about one limitation in particular. I know fonts with licensing issues or fonts that are marked "embedded not allowed" will not be embedded. Also, there is a threshold that I need to set.
So, I recall reading somewhere that Indesign will not fully embed "standard" fonts. Is that correct and what is this standard fonts category?
Oh, reading through some posts, I noticed lots of people and experts ask why does one need fully embedded fonts. That's a good question and I don't know the root reason but in my case it seems that some regulatory agencies (in the life sciences/pharma domain) require PDFs with fully embedded fonts.
Many thanks
Cristian

On behalf of Adobe:
(1) For both InDesign “PDF export” (including InDesign Server) and Illustrator “save as PDF” functions, most but not all of the .joboptions file font embedding options are totally and utterly ignored. The options that are ignored are the Embed all fonts, Embed OpenType fonts, Always embed, and Never embed. Those options are observed by Distiller and the PDFMaker components of Acrobat.
(2) These applications will attempt to embed all fonts referenced by the document, regardless of the settings of the .joboptions file. The only reason why a font would not be embedded in a PDF file would be if (a) the font was unavailable (i.e., not installed on the system) or (b) the font's embedding permissions do not permit embedding for at least preview and print privileges. Thus, if you use the so-called Standard .joboptions (strongly not recommended for any graphic arts purposes), even the base 14 fonts (four faces each of Helvetica, Times, and Courier along with Symbol and ITC Zapf Dingbats will be embedded if your document references them.
(3) The subset threshold value of 0 (zero) may effectively cause all the glyphs of a font to be embedded in some, but not all cases. This will work for many if not most Type 1 fonts and some smaller TrueType and OpenType CFF fonts. Note that embedding all glyphs in a font is not the same as embedding a full font. For OpenType and TrueType fonts, InDesign and Illustrator never embed all the tables of the font. Such unembedded tables include those used for pair kerning, advanced OpenType features (such as ligatures, alternate representations, contextual alternates, small caps, old style figures, etc.), and extended metrics.
(4) There are plenty of bubbameissas out there with regards to the benefits or liabilities of either fully embedding or subset embedding fonts. What is true is that: (a) Acrobat never uses the embedded font for text editing - you must have the font installed on the system in order to do such edits. (b) Subset embedding or not is totally irrelevant to what a RIP does when rendering text, either for PostScript or direct PDF RIPs. Neither subset or full embedding is any more reliable than the other and the specifications of PostScript and PDF do not permit the RIP to replace the embedded font with a font with a similar name - urban legend notwithstanding!!!! (c) Third party plug-ins to Acrobat or applications that claim to allow you to edit PDF files with embedded fonts may be illegally letting you do so if the embedding permissions do not permit embedding for editable embedding or installable embedding - most fonts do not provide such embedding permissions and since the fonts are missing metric information, such editing may be somewhat lacking in quality or features.
(5) In fact some very non-tech-savvy organizations have posted requirements for full embedding of fonts in submitted PDF files (I have personally seen one such requirement by some international bureaucracy). They can post such bone-headed requirements based on limited understanding of PDF and PDF workflows, but that doesn't mean that anybody actually provides such PDF files. If in fact you run into such requirements, I would appreciate it if references to same can be forwarded to my attention by private message on these forums.

• Embedding image in PDF works fine in CS2 but not CS3

When we create a PDF from CS3 with the images embedded and then open it on a CS2 machine it warns us about the fact that the file was created in a newer version of illustrator and then opens the file.
When we try and open the file on a CS3 machine it tried to relink the files and will not display the embedded images (they must be there as they are there when opening it in CS2)
Is there anything we can do to sort this?
Thanks
Danny Seager

I don't have AI 13 (CS3), so I can only take a guess at this.
>If we open that file in illustrator CS2 then we get a warning about the file being created in a later version but it opens fine and keeps the images embedded. - this works fine.
AI 12 (CS2) opens the AI 13 file because it was saved as a PDF. Saving as a PDF always embeds images because PDF was intended primarily as a READ ONLY document format. You don't have to have the original fonts and linked images -- they're all there in the PDF.
Try saving your AI 13 file as a native .ai
without PDF compatibility. What happens when you try to open that in AI 12?
I'm going to guess you saved your PDF out of AI 13 with Illustrator editing capabilities intact. That's of no use (or potentially troublesome) to AI 12, so it just uses the PDF portion of the file. AI 13, on the other hand, sees the editable AI portion of the file and elects to use that instead. (It assumes that because you saved with AI editing compatiblity, you'll want to avail yourself of those capabilities.) That means you'll have to have on your system all the original linked images, fonts, etc.
Does that make sense?
Try saving out your PDF without the AI editing option. What happens when you try to re-open that in AI 13?
Why are you saving to PDF if your intent is to re-open the files in AI?

• Dial a phone number embedded in a PDF document ...

Hi,
I cannot press on the phone numbers in my PDF document on my iPhone. Is it possible to dial a phone number embedded in a PDF document by pressing on it ? Is there a work around for that ?

No you can not do this.

• Can Preview recognize hyperlinks (embedded URLs) in PDF docs?

I've been trying to research this online but I get conflicting answers. Can Preview recognize hyperlinks (embedded URLs) in PDF documents? If it can, then how are those created?
I am using Adobe Acrobat Professional v7 (on Windows) and Preview doesn't appear to see the links I've created. Acrobat Reader on both Mac and Windows works fine.

I don't have any documents that I can test straight off, but I know Preview is limited when it comes to some of the advanced features of PDFs and you have to use Acrobat Reader for those. This might be another of those.

• Why video does not play when embedded in a PDF when viewed in Windows 8?

I have a situation where video must be embedded within the PDF document and it was working for us using older versions of IE and on 32 bit machines and using acrobat X. When the same file was tested on Windows 8 it looks good and behaves well except the embedded video does not play. The same video (.mp4) will play on the new OS if it is not embedded in the PDF.
Is this because the PDF is looking for a 32 bit flash player? Am I doing something wrong and/or is there a fix for this situation?

Are you watching the pdf file from Adobe Reader?
Windows 8 by default has a diferent reader for pdf files that does not support rich media elements.

• Need all fonts embedded in my PDF.

I converted a word document to pdf through pdf pack. How can I get the following fonts embedded in my pdf: arial MT, arial MT bold, and arial MT italic? Thanks.

Hi Cyn Tarr,
You can embed fonts using Adobe Acrobat.
PDF Pack cannot accomplish this.

• Opening an external PDF from a SWF embedded in a PDF. Is it possible?

I have created a PDF that contains an embedded SWF file that was created in InDesign. Is there a way to open a different pdf when the user clicks on a link? The "Open File" button command works in an interactive PDF, but not in a SWF file embedded in a PDF. Is there a work around, or a better way to do this?

Thanks for the response, this has been one of my fears in using flash. The reason we are doing it is that firstly, it allows for using multistate objects, and secondly, it causes the entire file to be preloaded at the opening of the file, making it run much more smoothly. In a file with lots of objects being turned on and off with buttons, an interactive Pdf tends to be very slow and buggy. I'm hoping I haven't hit a dead end in this and am open to any suggestions on how to work around the issues.

• Embedded SWF in PDF, "form" text transfer to said SWF

Thanks in advance for your help.

How to have a SWF (embedded in PDF) load a form text field: "value" ?
Objective: given;
~ SWF is embedded in a PDF
~ form field in PDF = "name1"
Coding task;
how to script the SWF's text field so that it can use the PDF's form text field
while embeded in the PDF (that has a form field / "value").
many thanks

ActionScript in the SWF has direct access to the Acrobat JavaScript model through the ExternalInterface object.

• Flex application embedded in a PDF performing a LC call

Hi,
I have a Flex application that is embedded in a PDF as a navigator which is supposed to invoke LiveCycle application deployed on a weblogic server using SOAP endpoint. The web service call seems to work fine if I run it from Flash Builder but once it’s inside a PDF, it would appear that the web service call is not reaching the application deployed on the Document Service server. The same application, however, does work if the server is deployed on JBoss.
I was wondering if anyone has suggestions on how I should go about troubleshooting.
Thanks, Lilliam.

Hi,
Creating a new project it's
- File -> New -> Flex Project
- Application Type -> Desktop
Setting this will create the descriptor file and create the WindowedApplication as the root. This application will startup in a native os window.
Here is an example of creating a simple os child window;
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<s:WindowedApplication xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx">
<fx:Script>
<![CDATA[
import spark.components.Window;
protected function button_clickHandler(event:MouseEvent):void
var window:Window = new Window();
window.title = "Hello Window";
window.width = 200;
window.height = 200;
window.open();
]]>
</fx:Script>
<s:Button label="Open Window"
click="button_clickHandler(event)"/>
</s:WindowedApplication>
The documentation will guide you the rest of the way.

• How to play embedded video in PDF

Hi, does anybody know if it's possibible to play embedded video in PDF. We created PDF's with embedded MP4 content that plays nicely in Adobe Reader Win/Mac version but not under Android.

We are sorry, this is not yet supported in Adobe Reader on Android.

• Can I get the formula in a cell of the embedded spreadsheet?

Hello,
With the Xcelsius SDK, is it possible to retrieve the actual formula in a cell of the embedded spreadsheet at design time?
We've tried several IPropertySheetProxy functions, with no luck:
proxy.getBindingAddresses(id) gives [Sheet1!R1C1]
proxy.getBindingDisplayName(id) gives 'Sheet1!$A$1'
proxy.getBindingValues(id) gives the result of the evaluated formula
proxy.hasFormula(id) returns true
Is there a way to retrieve the formula itself, as a String, e.g. "=B1-A1" ??
Thanks,
Sam

View (menu) > Show Formulas List
OR
Press option-command-F
will show a list of all formulas and their locations.
Clicking any item in the list will select that cell, bring it into view, and show the formula in the entry bar above the working area of the window.

Barry
