Embedded Video in Interactive PDF from Indesign (click to activate! grr!)

Hi guys
I am trying to put together an interactive PDF newsletter which has a video and a small slide show in it.
I am pretty new to this interactive element of indesign.
The video seems to have embedded fine (it is a FLV file), but when I view the PDF and hover over it I get a click to activate message.  While this is useful in telling the user to click on it, I would much rather it was nicely greyed out with the small play triangle in the middle and worked when the user clicked on that.
I guess my issue is a presentational one mainly.  Does this make any sense to anyone?!
Thanks

The way the PDF plays in Acrobat or Reader (this is what you're using, right?) is nothing InDesign has any control over.
So this really should be posted in the Acrobat forums. However, I don't believe there is any way you can modify this message, I'm afraid.

Making a interactive PDF from indesign, but it's too big. Tried to reduce file size in Acrobat, but it does not reduce file size.

Use the Optimize PDF command in Acrobat, it gives you more control. I think it's under the Advanced menu in Acrobat 9 Pro and File > Save As > Optimized PDF in Acrobat X Pro.
You might try playing around with different settings. You can also click the Audit Space button at the upper right to see if its from images or other things causing the file size problem.
Unfortunately, InDesign doesn't write interactivity in a very optimized way. You get better results with buttons, for example, creating them in Acrobat Pro and using the Duplicate command to duplicate them across multiple pages.

  • Embedded videos in Interactive PDF play sluggish

I have created an Interactive PDF using Indesign CS6. It is a 43 page pdf with a video embedded on 5 of those pages. When the final PDF is played on a PC, the videos seems to play sluggishly after watching a previous video. It seems there is some sort of background process going on once the videos play that hampers the playback of the next video. Has anyone else had this issue?
    Thanks,
    MD

    Thanks for your reply Dave.
The .mp4 videos are imported into InDesign and are controlled using one of the Skin options from the Media tab which allow the user to Play/Stop/Seek/Mute/Vol.
    The video sizes are 677k, 2.7mb, 3.9mb, 13.2mb, and 13.4mb.
Also, when I'm playing a video with audio, if I decide to go to the next page before stopping the video, the audio still plays in the background even though I'm on a different page. It doesn't look like there are too many options to choose from on the Media tab in InDesign so I'm wondering if there is something I'm missing to have more control over the video.
    Thanks,
    Michael

  • Interactive PDFs from InDesign

Has anyone created an interactive PDF with InDesign that has links to a specific page in a separate PDF? If yes, can you suggest where I might find good instructions to do this? I used Acrobat to create the links using relative paths and they worked fine as long as the PDFs were viewed with a browser, but when a reader downloads the first file from the web to their hard drive (making PDF "A" no longer in the same location relative to PDF "B") the links are then broken. So, I re-created the links in Acrobat using absolute paths for the links and the links work for me, but my client says they don't. Is there a better InDesign way to do this?
    Thnaks in advance,
    Suzanne Roberts

There are lots you can do. Unembed fonts for one. This would require using stock fonts like times, arial, geneva, monaco, etc. Optimized images in Acrobat.
There is plenty of info on the web. Check this google result from my search

  • Forms Warning with Interactive PDF from InDesign

    Hi all,
I have created an interactive PDF in InDesign CS5 with a series of buttons, and those buttons link to bookmarked pages within the document. These buttons are setup on one of the Masters. It seems that whenever I get more than 10 buttons on the master, I get the following warning when I open the exported PDF in Adobe Reader:
"Please Note: You cannot save a completed copy of this form on your computer. If you would like a copy for your records, Please fill it in and print it"
I don't have any form fields in the document that I am aware of. Is there any way to locate form fields if they do in fact exist?
Is there a limit of 10 buttons per master perhaps?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Glen

    Thanks Peter.
Is there a known workaround? I ended up using hyperlinks instead, I suppose there really is more than one way to skin a cat.

  • How can I keep the quality of an MP4 video high when I export an interactive PDF from InDesign?

I am making an Interactive PDF with embedded MP4 video using InDesign.  When I view the video in the PDF it has degraded the quality and the colour contrast is poorly affected.  I can have the video as a floating window but this gives a harsh black line around the video when it plays which is not acceptable.
Can anyone advise how to maintain the quality of the original video when it is embedded?

You can control the quality of the video (aspect ratio, pixel dimensions, frames/minute, etc.) by using the Adobe Media Encoder which comes with InDesign CS5 or later installations, including InDesign CC. InDesign only includes what you have placed and passes it on to the PDF file. There are no video quality controls in InDesign.
You cannot change the way Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader displays the MP4. If you don't like the way Acrobat/Reader handles display of a floating window, then you'll have to display it within the page. For more info, inquire in the Rich Media Acrobat forum.

  • How to export an interactive pdf from InDesign at a smaller file size.

I have a single page InDesign doc with a side navigation panel to the right of each page. This panel has interactive buttons created in InDesign.
When I export as an interactive pdf, the file size is over 27MB and I need it to be much lower.
I should mention that this doc was made from an original PRINT InDesign doc of facing pages, which was about 55MB.
When making it single pages for the interactive doc, the InDesign file size increased to 105MB.
Can anyone explain this and have any useful tips for saving the pdf down WITH interactivity working?
    Many thanks.

Okay - With the 15MB pdf, when I go into the PDF Optimizer dialog box, it's telling me that the Fonts are using 40% and the Acrobat Forms are using 29%.
Anyone know of a way I can reduce either of these???
    Many thanks in advance!

  • Interactive PDFs from InDesign 5.5 - hyperlinks not working at all!

I'm creating hyperlinks the way I always did in CS4 (type tool - hyperlinks panel etc) but when I export to PDF either through the new interactive PDF option OR the old print option switching on the interactive check box none of my hyperlinks work in Acrobat. I've checked the Adobe help menus and I don't seem to be doing anything wrong. Does anybody have any ideas? I've got 12 catalogues I need to make into interactive PDFs this afternoon and it's just too slow adding the interactivity in Acrobat (not to mention that if I have to edit any content I'll have to re-do all the interactivity each time). HELP.

I have found a way around this of sorts. Rather than right-clicking to bring up the hyperlinks menu I have to use the hyperlinks panel and specifically use the shortcut at the bottom of the panel. The dialogue box that pops up is slightly different to the one I get when going the long way round. I'm still kind of baffled, but it does seem to work...

  • Updating interactive PDFs from InDesign 6

I designed a form in InDesign 6 and exported it as an interactive PDF. Can I revise the Indesign version and export it again without losing the additional formatting that I originally did in Acrobat Pro? For example, I altered the size of some boxes but don't want to lose the additional steps I did in Pro. Can I import the revised form on top of the existing form, so to speak?

You can use the replace pages which will replace on the artwork and leave all of the buttons and fields as is.

  • Creating Interactive PDFs from InDesign

I have been researching using PDF to display database drive data merged into a PDF online.  I have investigated http://www.asppdf.com/ and http://www.aspose.com/categories/.net-components/aspose.pdf.kit-for-.net/default.aspx that provide solutions for using PDF to create dynamically merged data into a PDF.  Is it possible to use InDesign to create a PDF that would allow the ability to replace say a empty checkbox with a checked checkbox based on a database sotred value for that exact checkbox?
    Thanks!

The problem has been solved and here was my solution:
    TO PLACE AN IMAGE
The process to add an image is to give instructions to the end user to copy and paste the image to their clipboard using a word processor or other image software and then select Tools/Comment & Markup/Stamps/Paste Clipboard Image as Stamp Tool. Next, click and drag on the PDF where the image should go. The image can be resized and moved around easily.
    IMAGES NOT PRINTING
The solution for this was found on a different thread:
In our case, we noticed that Standard 9 was saving documents so that when the print option was select the default option selected for Comments and Forms was, "Documents and Markups."
Simply changing this setting to "Documents," as with all previous version of Adobe resolved our printing printing problems.
Hope this is helpful for all of banging your head against the wall like we were.

    Thanks, everyone!

  • Streaming video in interactive pdf

I have read everything I can on this subject, and although it looks like I should be able to do it, I have so far been unable to make it work!
My dilemma: Creating an Interactive PDF from InDesign CS6, and I would like to include links to various streaming video's throughout the pdf.  I would like them to run within the pdf (as a floating window), not pop out to the users web browser.  I would like people to be able to play them, and then play them again if they need to listen again, aka, loop, I guess.
My attempts: I have created the Play button (to launch the video) in InD and when I exported it to PDF, I tried to set the video up there.  I had minimal success with that route.  I've also tried to do the whole thing directly in InD, including the link to the video, but had no success.
I have downloaded two different replacement Flash players and tried to make both of them work, but with no real success.  However, I fully admit that I am not as technically savy as what they expect, since I really don't get the whole "do this in Java" part.  I tried to copy their script stuff in and replace my info where I saw it fit, but apparently there is other things going on that I am not getting.
Help!  If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.  Or even if there is somewhere you can steer me to learn how to do it, I'll go.  So far, most of the stuff has been programmatically over my head, even though I'm not a new user to the Creative Suite, unfortunately, it's all been print.

First thing to say is that if you want the video to be truly "streaming" it has to be served from an Adobe Media Server platform using the RTMP/RTMPE protocol.
Assuming you have the URL of such a stream, it's easy to create the annotation in Acrobat Pro. If you want a floating window and a 'play' button, this is the simnplest workflow as there's no scripting involved - but you need to create an image that will act as the button.
Use the Add Video tool to draw a region on the page which will be where your 'play' button sits.
In the Insert Video dialog there's a "Select file or insert URL" field at the top - in there, type the full URL of your RTMP stream.
Click "show advanced options" and select "Create poster from file", then open your image of the play button.
Set the playback style to "floating window" and enter the dimensions of the stream.
    Click OK.
If you already have the graphic for the play button as part of the PDF page itself, you can use a different workflow:
Use the Add Video tool to draw a very small region on the page which will be where the video poster sits (it has to exist but you want to hide it somewhere...).
Set the video options as before and click OK.
Use the Add Link tool to create a link region around the play button shape on your page.
Set the link to "Custom Action"
On the Actions tab, set the event to "Multimedia Operation (Acrobat 9 and later)", choose your video from the list, then in the lower area choose Play.

  • Embedding font problems (when exporting from InDesign to PDF)

A message alert is shown, when opening a pdf - after exporting from InDesign: Cannont exctract the embedded Font Frutiger.
We have uninstalled the frutiger font and installed an open type. But the font is not embedded anyhow..?
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks very much.
    Jane

I don't know if you need help scripting this, but...........
If you can not re-create the PDF from InDesign using the OTF,
In Acrobat, highlight the text with the acrobat touch-up text tool, right click and go to properties. You should be able to assign the OTF font running on you system, and select the embed option.
If not, this is why PitStop is an indespensable (sp?) tool.
    Best of luck

  • Anyone know how to export a PDF from InDesign so it is "click to go to next page" instead of "scroll to go to next page"?

Anyone know how to export a PDF from InDesign so it is "click to go to next page" instead of "scroll to go to next page"?

I don't use the latest InDesign, but in the past ID's options for exporting to PDF did not allow setting how a PDF should be viewed once exported.  However, these settings can be adjusted in Acrobat through Preferences: check out Page Layout and Zoom under Page Display.

Thanks for the reply. I got the IT to upgrade to 5.5 and it now works. Rather an annoying bug for CS5 though

  • Playing video in Interactive PDFs

When I embed a video (.mp4, .flv, etc) and export to an interactive PDF in Indesign, I keep getting asked to download the newest version of Flash player (which I already did) and the video won't play. Any suggestions?

Are you playing the video in Acrobat? If so, I'd ask in the Acrobat forums. It's not really an InDesign issue.
