Embedded videos in many websites won't open.

I have found that the embedded videos on many but not all websites won't open now when I'm browsing in Firefox. I am running 27.0.1. I have Adobe Flash Player installed so that's not an issue. As some examples of non-openers: Embedded videos in some of the news articles on Yahoo!'s home page; videos on the davidlynchfoundation.org site. I tried disabling the "Adblock Edge" add-on, but it didn't change anything. In many cases, their is a big empty space in the text where the video should be, i.e. there isn't any indication that there's a video there. In other cases, I click on the visible start icon, but the screen of the vid just goes to black.
When I switched to Safari, all of these embedded videos opened without a hitch. I'd rather continue with Firefox, but will have to switch to Safari if we can come up with a "fix" for this problem.
I have a MacBook running Snow Leopard. This is a new problem which I haven't experienced with Firefox previously.
BTW: I have only minimal tech skills.
Thanks for any advice/help you can provide.
Dave

Hi Yogidave,
It sounds like the videos are not loading properly. If there are not video controls, but there is a space for the video, this means that the item is loading, but the player is not loading.
In understanding what you tried:
I tried disabling the "Adblock Edge" add-on - it looks like this is no longer in the list of add ons that you have in the troubleshooting information, when you took this out, do the videos still leave space in the page where the video should be?
The examples you used: Yahoo homepage and the davidlynchfoundation: I know the latter uses an embedded youtube video with has its own video player that uses flash, as well at Yahoo. (I am not sure if all the videos are flash in Yahoo)
Since this is the case, can you please check your extensions to see if you have Flash installed or if you have it disabled? If so, please turn it on and visit the sites that are giving you issues to see if this resolves the problem.
This article has pretty simple instructions how to install the player if it is not there[[Install the Flash plugin to view videos, animations and games]]
The only other test I can suggest is to see if another type of embedded video does the same thing. For example, if you have netflix or hulu, see if those video players do the same thing.
I hope this helps. (also I tested those pages in beta and it loads just fine, you are not short of watching videos again in firefox)

why all videos from Chinese websites cannot be opened after the Remote Desktop Client Update 3.8.2 v1.1??

That's not a thing that can happen. Your problem with videos is unrelated to the Remote Desktop Client Update 3.8.2 v1.1.
There were several OS updates recently as well, which could have affected video playback though.
What application do you use to play the videos?
Are the videos streaming from the internet or are they downloaded first and then played?
what format are the videos? what file extension?

• Embedded videos from various websites no longer load

embedded videos from various websites no longer load. i just get a black mini screen with no controls. they do load when using other browsers and this only started within the last few days

i just tried safe mode and that makes no difference. the videos that do not load are ones embedded in websites such as the huffingtonpost etc. the website loads as normal. when i click on an article with a video the article appears but the area where the video usually appears is just a black box. typically that box contains a "promo shot" and video operating controls. recently this area is just black. this happens on numerous news type websites. when i use safari as my browser everything works fine

• How can I prevent embedded videos from playing automatically when I open a webpage?

When I go to a web page, such as when I click around to different stories on msn.com, there is often an embedded video. Sometimes it is a commercial. Sometimes it's something else. But it just starts playing all by itself, which can be loud and startling. I'd like videos to play only when I select them. Is there a way to make it prevent the auto-play?

You can look at: Stop Autoplay: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/1765

• I have three problems with Firefox 3.6.8 that 3.6.9 hasn't fixed: 1) Firefox has stopped responding to any and all javascripts, 2) Firefox won't play any embedded videos, and 3) Firefox won't let me open up new windows.

Every new link has to be opened in a new tab, or nothing happens. No matter how I try, I can't open more than one window with Firefox. Worst of all, if I surf the Internet for more than an hour, all these problems have a cumulative effect and Firefox simply crashes. I'd uninstall 3.6.9 and reinstall 3.6.6 (which gave me no problems) if I could only figure out how to save and export all my passwords and user IDs first -- that's way too much to have to input again from scratch!!

Do you have that problem when running in the Firefox SafeMode?

• Youtube website won't open.

Hello,
I'm using macbook pro osx 10.8.2. all software updated. flash player uninstalled and re installed (50 times). I have another macbook air and iphone here using the same wifi where youtube works just fine. same exact problem with ethernet too.
To be clear, all websites are working fine Except youtube and 'youtube' videos on other sites (facebook) won't play. vimeo opens and plays just fine. Here's the rub, the network internet settings on both macbooks are identical.
I've tried extensions and 32bit and even running a tracerout. . . . it just keeps going.
Any help would be appreciated.

• QT video on our website won't play (two issues, clearly described)

Sorry for the long post... lots to cover and I want to be clear.
ISSUE 1:
I'm building a website for a client which will eventually include dozens of short instructional videos dealing with music theory. I built a temporary QuickTime test file in order to begin testing the site. The test video features a short musical chord in the audio track and a simple logomark which appears and then fades out. The finished QT files will feature videos of musicians performing, plus related instructional content. The QuickTime test file was built in iMovie; the finished QuickTime files will be built in Final Cut.
The test video specs are: 240 x 180 pixels, H.264, 128 KBPS (let me know if you need more specs). I did not choose the "hinted" (prepare for Internet streaming) option when I exported the test video from iMovie.
When I test the temporary QT file using Firefox, it works as expected. Same with Explorer. A new window opens and the QT file plays normally. In Safari on my PowerBook, it's fine, too. In Safari on my old G4 tower, however, a new window opens and only the audio portion of the QT file plays: The video portion does not. The QT 'playback bar' jumps up the page (where the video portion should be) and plays the audio only.
Here's a link to a test page. When you get there, click the "WATCH A TEST VIDEO" link.
http://www.muzoracle.com/muzweb/watchittemp/videoconstruction.html
Both test Macs are running QT 7.2 and Safari 2.0.4 (419.3). I can't imagine why results are different in Apple's official browser on two different Macs... and why everything works fine in Firefox and Explorer. I've reset Safari on the buggy one. I've ditched QT prefs and even downloaded a fresh copy of QT 7.2. I've tried everything I can think up. No luck. I have no idea what Windows PC users might expect.
I'd appreciate reading the results others on this forum observe. The last thing we want is for visitors to have a frustrating experience when the site goes public. We want it to be seamless and we want it to "just work" (as Apple's Mac ads are fond of saying). Since we've settled on using QuickTime exclusively on our site, we already anticipate that some PC users will need to go download the free QT player (and we've provided links to do so)... that's about as far as we're willing to push people who simply wish to view our video content.
ISSUE 2:
Our ISP offers streaming content as part of its web hosting package. They have Darwin and Helix DNA set up to play various formats, including QuickTime (.mov) files. Although their upper-level techs assure me that it's all working on their end, none of the content we've created streams from their server to our Macs. They're all on Windows PCs. I spoke with a general-level tech support representative on the phone for about an hour the other day. She's on a Windows PC and could not get it to work. She was great... she knew her stuff and tried everything in her arsenal... working with permissions, moving things around in various directories, we tried both "hinted" and "non-hinted" versions of the file... nothing worked on any browser we tested.
On the test page URL listed above, you'll see a link that says "WATCH A STREAMING VIDEO TEST." Please click it and tell me what happens. On all machines we've tried - Macs and PCs - in Firefox, Safari, and Explorer - we get the same results: A QT window opens and displays a message saying "Switching transports." This message is displayed for about a minute and is eventually replaced by various messages, including "Not Found," "404" (which I assume means the file cannot be found), a QT logo with a question mark in it, "-3258: Disconnected," and "415: Unspecified Media Type," among others.
Grr. I've lost about 22 hours trying to troubleshoot this issue during the last five days... hours of my life, gone forever, which I cannot in good faith bill to my client. I'm losing sleep and money.
Thanks again for any tips and advice.

Nothing opens when that URL is opened in QuickTime Player.
True "Streaming" files require hint tracks be included in the file.

• Website won't open on firefox but will with internet explorer

Firefox tells me that the Foxnews website page can't be found.
I can open it in with internet explorer.
Is this a political thing because it just started a few days ago and doesn't affect any other site?

• PDFs on website won't open on mobile devices

We've a website currently in development mode which has PDFs for download. These open fine from a desktop, but on mobile devices we get "Error opening document, please try again".
The same PDF has been copied to another website and it does download to mobile devices successfully.
The links had "target = _blank" which I've since removed to see if the problem was caused by opening a new window. This made no difference. We have the same issue when opening the PDF by entering the full URL in the browser.
The only thing I have in [ISAPI_Rewrite] is "AddType application/pdf .pdf " to try and force it to download.
Kind regards

• Sometimes when I open a link in a new tab and then switch to the tab, the address bar clears and the website won't open.

Sometimes when I open a link in a new tab and then switch to the tab, the address bar clears and I'll have to re open the tab and hope that doesn't happen again. Sometimes this happens again and again. Most of the times if I just open the link in a new tab and don't switch to it, this won't happen. But as I switch too the tab, the text would disappear and the link wouldn't open.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
