Embedded W8 Product key in YOGA BIOS

Hi guys,
I had posted something on this before but that thread had gone off track so i wanted to start a new update.
For users with a YOGA wanting to go to W8Pro with a clean install - the Propack works because it sees the W8 core key in the BIOS and is designed to upgrade from there. Buying the W8Pro upgrade will not upgrade in this way. Here's the scary part, buying a W8Pro System Builder full DVD and doing a clean install doesn't work either!  All the previously mentioned installers aside from Propack detect the key in the Bios during the install and simply install W8 basic with the OEM key from Lenovo. It's Propack or nothing, unfortunately.
If you're wondering why i care - I wanted a copy of W8Pro that allows a clean install.  Not just on the YOGA but on whatever machine i'm using at the time. In other words i want to own a full copy of the OS i use(crazy huh?). Propack will clean install only with a key embedded in the BIOS (which only an OEM can do) or an existing w8 install.  Microsoft screwing the non-enterprise IT folks as usual.
If I'm wrong about something here, please let me know. I'd love to find a way to tell the installer to use a different CD key, but so far it seems to pull the embedded and move on without any options.

That really isn't true... Me and the guy that helped me in the other thread proved that it can be done without the pro pack... Yeah its a little more work, but if you have msdn and have access to a lot of the weird versions, but not the retail pro-pack; then it is your only solution without dropping $65...

  • Yoga13 Embedded Win8 Product Key in BIOS

The windows 8 key embedded in my YOGA13 is preventing me from doing a fresh install of Win8 Pro.  I believe the W8Pro installer is not prompting for a key because it checks for the embedded one which makes it fail due to key/image mismatch.  I'd like to know how to work around this but really i'd like to know how a user can see/change the embedded Win8 core in the BIOS.  I don't see any options like this. Thanks.

Oh my god I have been stuck on this issue for the whole first two days I've had this thing... Been on the phone with msdn, 10 different departments at MSFT, 2 chat sessions, an email, 3 calls to Lenova, read everything I could...
This problem sucks... I have the Win 8 N (Multiple Editions) X64 edition and I've been trying to do it on a bootable usb, and it always installed as the regular edition with their key pre-activated...
Msdn chat at least tried to help... The phone people just pass you around every 10 seconds... Lenova was the worst though... All I wanted to know is if there was any way to wipe the embedded key off the computer forever, and she couldn't ever understand that... She kept saying she could get me the key... I don't want the key... I want the key gone... She couldn't get that... She said she would send me new disks for $69.99... That is sweet of her...
    REALLY???? cAN'T BE SERIOUS!!!
Hardware transferred me to software that transferred me to hardware... The call dropped each time they transferred... Terrible customer service... Just horrible...
I can't believe I didn't think of it earlier, but the Windows 7 idea sounds interesting... Since I have an rtm disk from msdn I'm still not sure it will work... I'm worried I'll go through the time and end up with it recognizing their key again...

  • Windows 8 not picking up embedded product key when installed with WDS

Ok so here is my setup.
Server 2008 R2, running WDS and serving various images.
the Windows 8 image is a vanilla boot.wim and install.wim imported from a system builder iso.
If I burn the ISO or extract it onto a USB drive, then the install process picks up the embedded Windows product keys no problem.
If I deploy the same thing via WDS, the setup wizard asks for the keys, ergo, is not picking them up from the UEFI firmware. Is this an inherent limitation of WDS or am I doing something wrong?

    Hi,
As it has been a while since you post the question, whether the issue still exists? Have you tried to entered the product key in unattended file? If issue still exists could you share the unattended file with us?

Sir Huffer, you used windows 7 to install. Our **bleep**ing company technician used windows 8 pro to reinstall on my pavilion ultrabook 14-b109ex when he messed up with its shrinking of c partition and did not made a recovery disk. I read elsewhere that it reflushes the firmware bios and thus changes the embedded original windows 8 home or basic to windows 8 pro cracked version compared to installing windows 7 only. Is it true that bios embedded original product key windows 8 is reflushed by windows 8 pro cracked version? Or is it true that only a desoldering of the bios can change the embedded product key by resoldering new physical bios chip? If windows 8 home can be flushed away for good by windows 8 pro where on earth can I find my original bios embedded product key. Some say the sticker is on the power supply, but wouldn't want to check because I just bought this ultrabook and have just used it for a month or two. The way it goes is that this would be a classic example of paying for a product key and throwing it out for nothing. I don't think hiding the product key is an advantage for everybody, there's always an exception. And if there's just a paid version for getting back my product key, what's the use of having a one year warranty? Thank you for hearing my grudges. At least it relieved me a lot, even there's no solution to my problem anymore.

  • How to get sideload product key in order to deploy windows store app into Windows 8 pro and windows RT

From where can i get the Windows 8 sideload product key and the process how to get it .please explain in detail .

I was able to resolve my issue once I worked with Microsoft Professional Services.  Here are the steps needed to deploy a Windows 8 Store app for anyone else looking for help on this.
Create your app package in Visual Studio
        https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/jj874388.aspx
Create an app certificate using PowerShell as administrator, here is one way to do it.
        https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/jj835832%28v=vs.85%29.aspx
Install the app on the device
        https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/jj835832%28v=vs.85%29.aspx
Ensure Device has the correct GP settings
        http://blogs.technet.com/b/scd-odtsp/archive/2012/09/27/windows-8-sideloading-requirements.aspx
Install the application on the device
Refer to Sideload the app for user section
        https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/jj874388.aspx
    * If you run your app now you should get an error, this is because you have not installed a Sideloading Key
And the missing piece of the puzzle What is a Sideload key and how can I get one?
    * Documentation on this is confusing so here is what I needed to know and found out
Sideload key is a product key that is needed to be added to the device so that it can use Windows 8 apps that are not from the Store
It is not a requirement to have the machine joined to the domain or have Windows Enterprise installed on it. In my case my target was a Windows 8.0 Pro tablet.
You do not need Windows 8.1 to use sideloading it will work on Windows 8.0 as well
You can purchase a key from a Third Party Distributor but you will need to know what to ask for
Ask for a Windows 8 Sideloading Key, Sometimes referred to as a Windows 8 Embedded Sideloading product key
They cost about $100.00 a pop but they sell them as a Volume License so the minimum you can by is 5.
However in my case it turned out that my company had an Enterprise Sideloading License, I just needed to know who to ask and what to ask for.
Once you get your xxxxx-xxxxx- Slideloading key from the distributor here are the steps to installing it on the device (Section 2 Step 3)
        http://blogs.msdn.com/b/micham/archive/2014/05/30/sideloading-store-apps-to-windows-8-1-devices.aspx
Once I installed that my application worked.

  • Windows 8 product key

I have a satellite c55d-a5120. A virus wiped my hard drive and I need to reinstall windows 8. I have a windows 8 cd but it will not pull the product key from the bios. Nore can I finde the key in the bios. HELP!

    Satellite C55D-A5120
    Downloads here.
Eagle is exactly correct. The product key for that model is burned into the UEFI.
But if you install a retail version of Windows 8.1, you'll need to install essentially all of the drivers and utilities at the download site above to make your laptop work as designed.
I don't have the time and would opt to order recovery media from Toshiba. Scroll down to Get Recovery Media here
See the instructions in the section Restoring from recovery media, which begins on p. 56 of the User's Guide.

  • Thinkpad Yoga - Clean install with Win 8.1 disc and embedded product key

    Hello everyone,
I purchased a Thinkpad Yoga that comes along with Win 8.1 and embedded product key.
Will it be possible to plug-in an external drive and install Win 8.1 from a Win 8.1-disc? BUT I don’t want to use the key that comes with the disc, but the key embedded in the bios.
This is my girlfriends Windows 8.1 disc and license. Nevertheless I could use it for the clean install.
But I'm not sure, if the original key from my Yoga will work then.
    Thanks
    Hutson

I guy on Youtube made a rough tutorial.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lI8AnNBIlLQ
    Englisch subtitles available
In the comments he suggests, to download the Iso with anouther win-8.1-key - no matter which one - and to install the system clean. In his opinion the system will get the key from the hardware. He is writing, that there is just a universal iso. So it's no problem to download an iso with another key, even if your system is a Home-Edition and you download it with a Pro-Key.
    I will try this.

  • Windows 8 - Can I upgrade BIOS without loosing embedded product-key?

On machines with Windows 8 pre-installed, the product-key is embedded in bios.
So... what happens with the product-key if I upgrade Bios?
    Can I be sure I don't loose the product-key?

The product key should remain intact.  If it doesn't, it is a bug and Lenovo would need to correct it while the machine is under warranty.
Updating a BIOS for a machine not under warranty isn't advised.

  • Product key for Windows 8.1 in Yoga 2 Pro

How can I find the product key for Windows 8.1 in the Yoga 2 Pro?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi mpweinberg,
     Welcome!
Since Windows 8, OEM preinstalled operating systems store and encrypt the product key in the uEFI or BIOS firmware chip.  The product key is no longer on the COA sticker to help prevent theft. Whenever you need to reset or reinstall the same operting system on your OEM PC, the product key will automatically be applied and activated. Have you tried running Belarc Advisor? I believe that will show you the product key along with other important information about your system. http://belarc.com/

  • Win 8 product key and a pre-installed Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13, how to get it?

    Hello
I live in Finland and I have read previously that these Windows 8 product keys are now linked somehow with motherboard´s BIOS systems, so we actually don´t need to know our product codes anymore.
Well, in some cases we do need to know them.
My Windows asked me once if I want to install a new version to get some new features, the same procedure can be launched by going to your Control panel, selecting System and selecting the top option where it says you could update to a new version to unlock new features.
This requires a 25-digit Windows 8 product key. Which we Yoga 13 owners do not have, as it is somewhere in the BIOS, hidden from us.
How can I give my product key to this field if I do not know it?
    1. Called to Microsoft
I tried contacting Microsoft Finland about this, but their automatic phone service stated it was none of their concern as it is a pre-installed system, and therefore I need to contact Lenovo straight. I tried to get a person to talk to, but I got none. Always an automatic service. I called to their switch (is this the right word?) to ask if I could get a person to talk to, but the number she forwarded me to always got to an automatic robot, again.
    2. Lenovo Customer support
Well, Lenovo directs customers to this forum from their customer service web page, so I hope some Lenovo employee can finally answer this question, please. I value customer service, and getting an answer from another forum using customer is not really customer service when they suggest using some 3rd party software to maybe get your windows 8 key with a method that may not be the most fancy way if asked from Microsoft. Lenovo Finland in Espoo (near Helsinki, contacts here: http://www.fonecta.fi/yritykset/Espoo/792365/Lenovo+Finland) has a phone number that hangs up every time you try to call it, I tried 4 times. This is getting awkward, you know.
    Thank you,
    - Tapio

When they ask for that key, they are expecting an upgrade key to something like Windows 8 Pro or addition of a Media Center Key. They don't expect you to use the same Key you are already using. It won't work.
Anyhow, take a look at this:

  • MSI GT70 0ND-622AU - Accessing BIOS/Finding Windows Product Key

    Hi,
Looking for answers to the following questions on my MSI GT70 0ND-622AU please.
    1. How do I access the BIOS? There's no "Press blah for setup" prompt when powering on. Only an MSI screen.
    2. How can I locate my Windows 8 Product Key. There's no stickers on these laptops including under the battery. I'd like to install an SSD as the primary drive and assume I'll be needing it to install the OS.
    Thanking you in advance

Per Microsoft's new rules, the key must be embedded inside of BIOS, which will only activate with matching edition.
You can use http://rweverything.com/ to check your ACPI -> MSDM to find out what your key is.
However, if you still cannot activate your OS then you will need use recovery DVDs to restore the OS back to the stock one.

  • Dell Windows 8 bios based product key Reinstall problem

I recently purchased a Windows 8 Dell Inspiron and i've been a victim of a special type of virus that block me from booting windows 8. I can't even get to the windows login page. I tried to reinstall using a bootable windows 8 ISO file which i found on the net.
During the install process it asks me to enter a product key, but given dell bios based embedded product key how come it doesn't retrieve it automatically?
Do i need a specific dell recovery/ install disk which will retrieve the product key or am i just doing something wrong??

Officially you should contact Dell to get a Dell Reinstallation USB/DVD.
If you reside in the US you can fill in this form:
    http://lt.dell.com/lt/lt.aspx?CID=266887&LID=4921161&DGC=SM&DGSeg=DHS&RED=301&DURL=https://www.dell.com/support/diagnostics/us/en/19/nondiagnostichome
If you don't reside in the US your only choice is to call Dell Technical Support.
Unofficially sometimes end-users are having issues procuring media. Especially those who reside outside the US as there is NO ONLINE MEDIA REQUEST FORM for non-US customers.
Theres been some complications with media (mainly because of Microsoft who messed it up big time).
For instance the Windows 8.1 retail downloader and .iso media rejects Windows 8.0 product keys and vice versa. For the Dell OEM media I'm not certain if the same problem exists. The .iso you found on the net might not be a reliable installation source.
In the meantime you can try installation using the generic product key here:
    http://www.heidoc.net/joomla/technology-science/microsoft/70-windows-8-direct-download-links
Then you can try using RWEverything to view your Windows 8 product key:
    http://forums.tweakarena.com/showthread.php?t=226
Finally you can select change product key to the one you found with RWEverything and attempt to activate.
There have been a few that have reported such a procedure to work but I have not tested this as I don't have an OEM license.

  • How to find win 8 product key in bios

hi just got hp envy 17 model 7255dx,but i was using different dv7 before new one,and i had ssd hard drive which i just wanted to format from the scratch because of different hardware on previous mashine,so i have now only ssd hard drive installed and i install trial win 8 in order to activate later so there is no sticker with the product key any more on the back of the laptop,i read someware that key is in bios so how i can find he key?
edit: i tried belarc advisor and he gave me the product key but when i type in order to activate the windows i get a message  the product key you entered appears to be default product key and cant be used to activate this edition of windows please enter different key

Well hp is no help at all I was on the phone with Microsoft and hp had both remotely hook up to my laptop to no avail, and had several chats with hp and Microsoft support on line. Support runs on a script and if your issue is not on that scrip they are reading from good luck!  Here is what happened with my laptop, Product name: HP ENVY TS 17 Notebook PC, Product number: E4S14UA#ABA, Serial number: {Private Information Removed} windows preinstalled. I updated to windows pro to get media center and worked fine, and reformatted with the disk I ordered from hp and worked fine 2 times. Went and up dated to windows 8.1 and I did not like it could not uninstall it so I reformatted with the hp disk once more, well then the lap top would not activate  and to find out the key was blocked by Microsoft, called Microsoft once more and they said they block keys once in a while, and then they give new keys to people who purchase a key from them, and that I needed to get one from my pc manufacture which is hp. In the numerous chats emails ect. hp could not understand that concept, and was down to repeating themselves in chat, copying what they just typed and pasting it in the chat box lol I do not know if they were not thinking or that's all they had.  When hp had started to copy and paste  repeat text in chat I told them I was done stick me with a fork and ended the chat. The reply person sent an email saying I would have to send my laptop in and they would have to take it apart and work on the system board for a key just a key. So I saved them money on shipping and tech support, I paid 119.99 I think it was may been 119.00 and send hp several notices to pay, I will try a few more times I have the address to their billing in CA  and will send a few there. If I get no place I will take them to small claims court, and if hp wants to pay someone to show up and loose for 119.00 then great. With the new key laptop works fine. Good luck with hp lol.

  • Blocked Win 8 Bios product key

    Hi,
I bought a new Dell Inspiron with a Bios Win 8 product key.  the problem is that for some reason, this key is blocked.  Dell gave me a new key which works but every 15 mins or so, the msg to activate windows comes up.  When I checked in system,
I can see that Windows somehow goes back to the blocked bios key.  I have to activate it every 15 mins!! How can I solve this? Can I replace the blocked bios key with the new key I have which works?
I tried Formatting (factory state) with recovery disks, through the Dell recovery console and also through the Windows Control Panel.  All to no avail.
    thanks
    Nick

    Hi,
you need to get Dell to fix this, as the manufacturer of the machine, they have the necessary OEM tools.
