Embedding a font in a PDF

How can I embed a font in a PDF file generated by the Report
Server 6i?
Taanks.

All this information has been very helpful, thank you. I discovered we had a bad FontLib path in our workspace and corrected that - thanks to the previous poster for that tip. We also realized that the fonts we are trying to use were not actually in the FontLib and we then moved them in there.
I am now encountering two new issues:
1. When we try to print to PDF using the Olympian fonts Documaker Studio is crashing. Before we moved the fonts into the Fontlib, it didn't crash, but used the default Helvetica font in creating the PDF. After we moved the Olympian fonts into the Fontlib we experienced the crashing. It's possible that we have a bad font file. I will probably open a ticket for this issue unless others have ideas about why it might crash.
2. When we try to print a document to PDF written in Stone Sans, it doesn't crash but also doesn't use the Stone Sans font, but rather Helvetica, one of the Adobe defaults. I did verify that the font file exists in the FontLib.
I should also mention that both Olympian and Stone Sans in our environment use font files that are font families, rather than a single file for each font point size.

• How to embed the needed fonts in a pdf file

Dear Sir/Mam,
We had purchased licenced version of adobe acrobat x pro
We are facing issues while embedding the font in the pdf file
Please find the below mentioned requirement
Requirement:
We have a pdf file (template) with some static images and static text in it
We need to populate dynamic data in the pdf file for this we may use text boxes
We need to set the font name for the text box and embed that font in the pdf template (Eg:Font to be used in textboxes is "RotisSansSerif-Bold")
Queries
Please let us know how to embed the needed fonts in the pdf file?
Once user exports the pdf file, even if user doesnot have the fonts installed in his system the text need to be displayed in the same fonts, how to acheive this?Eg:if we define "RotisSansSerif-Bold" as font in the textboxes, after exporting the data the text need to be in the same font.
Note:
Fonts will only installed in the application server and not in the client system
The mentioned requirement need to work on below mentioned specifications
OS:Windiows-XP, Browser:IE
OS:Mac osx, Browser:Safari

There is a similar post just a few away from yours. I will suggest what I would try. Open your job settings file (press or print preferred to get all fonts) and then select the properties and the font tab. At your font to the always embed list and you will likely need to uncheck the subset box. Then save your job settings (give it a name that is meaningful to you, you can not use the settings file you started with as they are read only and I do not recommend changing that). Maybe that will do the job. Of course that is for the creation of the PDF, I forgot you were talking about a form. You might check the form field properties, but I suspect you have already tried that. Guess I don't play with forms enough. Others may be by to answer.

• Is ID exported PDF considered non-editable? (In the case of view&print embedding permission fonts)

Hiya!
I am a graphic designer and I use InDesign 5.5.
I have a question about font embedding when using the InDesign's export as a PDF in "print" format feature.
Many fonts allow embedding into digital documents only for the purpose of viewing and printing.
In addition to this the font EULA's mention that the embedded font may not be used to edit the document.
Is it possible to create a non-editable PDF with embedded fonts?
Is choosing PDF export option "print" the key here, or embedding the fonts as a subset?
Isn't it still possible to edit PDF in Acrobat with touch up text tool? Or use some third party editing program?
OR Is a PDF file - with fonts embedded as a subset - non-editable as such, or at least considered to be non-editable enough?
Or is it just that the file doesn't really have to be non-editable, but it must not be edited...
How do I ensure that? Do I even need to ensure that?
Whole thing seems so controversial.
Hope someone can shed some light into this!!!
-Ahlax-

Ahlax,
There are several separate concepts here.
First, PDF is really a final form file format. It wasn't designed as an editable format for layout such as InDesign's .indd format ane Word's .doc and .docx formats. Although PDF files may be tagged with contextual metadata, typical content of PDF files contains no context in terms of words, sentences, paragraphs, columns, etc. It is simply graphical objects including text fragments, vector artwork, and raster images at a particular place on a page with specified graphical attributes (color, transparency, etc.). As such producing a full PDF file editor first requires definition of what it actually means to edit such a file given the characteristics of PDF files.
That having been said, Acrobat and various third party plugins to Acrobat as well as third party applications provide some degree of editability for PDF files, recognizing that such edits are definitely not at the abstractual level that you get with InDesign. You can “touch-up” text, but doing a re-layout is effectively impossible. In most cases, it is better (in terms of time, effort, and resultant quality) to go back to the source document, make the changes there, and then regenerate the PDF.
Fonts are a totally separate issue. Adobe products will not embed any font into a PDF file unless the font allows for at least preview and print embedding. For PDF forms, Acrobat requires a font to allow editability embedding. However for text touch-up and other edits, Acrobat never uses the embedded font. Such edits are only allowed if the user has the same font actually installed on their system.
In terms of forcing a PDF file to be totally non-editable, that is done by applying security to the file when you export the PDF file from InDesign (the Security tab) or in Acrobat Pro after PDF creation (go to the Security tab under Document Properties (Ctrl-D) to set such security).

• Embedding fonts in existing PDF

Is there a way to embed the fonts in a PDF? We often receive PDFs from outside sources that we don't have access to the native file. If the font is not on my system, I occasionally replace with a similar font, but it isn't always feasible. Any help would be appreciated.

>Is there a way to embed the fonts in a PDF?
Yes, and this is normal and recommended. You mean, though, I think,
embedding late in the day. The PDF Optimizer can do that.
> If the font is not on my system, I occasionally replace with a similar font, but it isn't always feasible.
The font would need to be on your system to be embedded, though.

• Embedding Fonts Into A PDF

Hi There,
I'm having trouble sending my files to the printers, my fonts is jumping...
How do i make sure that my fonts are embedded into my PDF file,
I'm using indesign cs5.5 Please can someone help me, I have distiller as well.
Thank You
Kind Regards

Can you check one of your problematic PDFs with Acrobat? Go to the Document Properties dialog and check the "Fonts" tab. That way you can verify if your fonts are embedded.
It's really straightforward: where Acrobat does *not* tell you a font is "(Embedded)" or "(Embedded subset)", that font is missing.
If you find you are creating files without embedding all fonts, you need to review your workflow. As I said above, you might have switched off InDesign's warnings for this.
Bear in mind it's also possible your PDFs are fine and it's your printer that needs to update.

• Embedding of fonts into PDF document

Hello people!
I need to create a PDF document that has text in different fonts(Arial Black, Courier New, Lucida Sans etc.) and languages(English, German, Russian etc.).
What is the best way to do this? How can I embed a font into a PDF document?
I am reading a PDF Reference documantation, but I have not found a good example of font embedding...
I would be thankful for an example or link to documentation or any other information that will help me to solve this problem.

>I have not found any free library for creating PDF files so I'm writing my own..
I would like to recommend that, rather than spending weeks or months
on getting fonts to embed (this is HARD) you look harder at the
available library. There are now dozens, and some are free, some are
even open source. Quality varies, of course.
http://www.planetpdf.com/ has a very big list of PDF tools, including
developer tools.
If you want to continue, realise that at points in this task you will
hit things which suddenly seem to make the job ten times harder than
before. Embedding fonts is one. Far Eastern fonts ten times harder
still.
> (The only library I found(for C++) was PDFLib, but it is not free)
Do a fair comparison of your months of coding time versus licensing
time.
>Adobe PDF Library is not free too(As I understand it)
Indeed not. From what we understand licensing is by negotation,
royalty based and never less than tens of thousands of dollars.
Frankly, too, it's not an ideal library for PDF creation.
>
>Yes, you are right! But almost every PDF doc is coded... How can I decode it to watch its contents?
Write a decoder. You are sure to need one as part of debugging your
own code at some point.
> Is there an example of font embedding in the documentation?
No, but it's just an extra FontFile, FontFile2 and/or FontFile3 key in
the FontDescriptor: not very interesting in PDF terms.
The key part is that you have to read and understand the font file
formats as well as the PDF format, because in most cases you have to
parse and may have to rewrite the font data. So if you want to embed
TrueType fonts, now is the time to read the TrueType font
specification (at least in outline, down to the level of the
individual tables: you can ignore the stuff about outlines and
rendering).

• EMBEDDING POSTSCRIPT FONTS INTO PDFS

Used Quark Xpress 3.31 on Windows 98/Millenium/2000, made ps file, distilled to PDF. Worked great. All fonts embedded in PDF. Files worked great for prepress. Can't update Quark because of maths program I use that won't work on later Quark versions and can’t get math program upgrade. Trying to update to Windows XP. With XP postscript fonts will not embed in PDFs via Quark 3.31/Acrobat Distiller 4. Fonts will only show in Courier on PDF, although using Word same fonts will distill and show in PDF preferences/fonts list – so fonts are working. Have tried Universal Document Converter 5.3 as straight PDF converter. Fonts show on PDF but not showing as fonts embedded in preferences/fonts in PDF. Trying Adobe Acrobat Pro 10 but does not seem to work either. I think it is an issue with Quark 3.31 and later Windows platforms. Any suggestions out there on problem/solution? I may have to be stuck in the middle ages with software. Thanks

I may have to be stuck in the middle ages with software
People have the best experience when their application software, their OS software and their hardware are moving forward together. But you've pretty much just stuck with what you have for the past 16 years.
I'd guess that the problem is that QuarkXPress 3.31 (which came out in 1996, according to Wikipedia) is probably incompatible with Windows XP (which came out in 2001).
Either you stick with what you have or you'll have to replace all your software. Assuming you want to stick with QuarkXPress, you'll have to find new math software which works with a later version of QuarkXPress. This will then require you to probably upgrade your hardware and update your Windows software. Since you waited so long, this will take some work.

• Trouble with Preview not using embedded fonts in a PDF

I have a client I'm working with that is generating PDF reports for various organizations in various languages. They are using an Arial Unicode font but are using different encoding for some of the more unique languages. To ensure the report will be viewable regardless of installed fonts, they are embedding the font.
Most of the languages are showing up fine in preview, but three languages are giving me trouble. Specifically Greek, Russian and Thai which are using encoding EL8MSWIN1253, CP1251, and TH8TISASCII.
Basically the question is whether there is some toggle that will tell Preview to use the embedded font? Or something we can put into the PDF (the pdf is created using FPDF) that will allow a user to know which font/encoding they'll need to install in order to properly view the document? (I'm actually trying to figure that out myself...which font I need to install to get preview to view the document properly).
Thanks in advance for any help.

Actually, I got that example to work... here are the changes
I made...
<mx:htmlText>
You can vary the font
size,
color,
face, or
<font
size="18"color="#FF00FF"face="Times New Roman">any combination
of the three.
</mx:htmlText>
As I said above, I have found errors in the code of the help
docs... this is yet another one of them. Usually its spaces in the
wrong place, or no space at all, or missing ) or ], or a case
sensitivity issue.
If you got your custom font to display, that should work...
but then again.. what should work, doesn't always.

• Rename embedded fonts in a .pdf file

Is it is possible to rename the embedded fonts of a .pdf file?

You can safely removed the system times and helvetica.
http://www.jklstudios.com/misc/osxfonts.html
If you use iCal, Mail and a few other Apple programs that use badges on the dock icon you will get a substitute font on the icon, but having another helvetica will fix that. You need 1 Helvetica of any type or Photoshop will not launch.
The only fonts you NEED in OS X are Lucida Grand (used in menus), Last Resort, and Keyboard. The rest can be deleted. Apple says you have to keep Kana, but if you aren't working in any Asian languages you can remove it without system instability. To be safe and follow Apple's guidelines you can keep it.

• Exception thrown while processing pdf file with composite fonts using adobe pdf library (v 9.1 )

Hi All,
I have an issue with processing composite fonts with adobe pdf library (v 9.1 ).
While processing a pdf file having composite fonts, the pdf library is throwing an exception.
The api which throwed exception is "PDPageAcquirePDEContent()". In my code i am calling PDDocGetNumPages(), PDDocAcquirePage() before this api is called, but all those functions suceeded. In the HANDLER, using the ASGetErrorString(), i got this exception error as "The encoding (CMap) specified by a font is missing."
Now coming to the input file (which is also attached), this document have three different composite fonts ( details are given below )
Font Name : TicketBold, Bold(Embedded)
Font Type : Trueype (CID)
Encoding : Identity-H
Font Name : Times-Roman (Embedded)
Font Type : Type 1 (CID)
Encoding : Identity-H
Font Name : TimesNewRomanPSMT (embedded)
Font Type : TrueType(CID)
Encoding: Identity-H
If i convert all the composite fonts to outline using pitstop before processing, it works fine.
So my question is that whether pdf library doesnt support composite fonts (which i dont think so ) or i need to do a special handling for these kinds of fonts in my application ( which i strongly belive ). If its the latter case, please let me know how to handle it in my application.
thanks in advance
best regards

Hi Leonard,
Thanks for your reply. May i ask you which sample of the PDF Library you used to test my scenario.
One question i would like to put to you beofre going for filing a formal issue to Adobe will be does this issue has anything to do with the initialization of the pdf library?
What i meant is that when we call the PDFLInit() we pass a PDFLDataRec structure which is initialized by various path to font folders, cmap folders and unicode folders. Whether if i miss any of these folders will it cause this issue???
thanks again

• Missing Fonts from Imported PDFs

I have a document that has several PDF documents "Placed" in it. When I go to print, it tells me that I have missing fonts.
From Find Font, I can see the missing fonts and what PDF they came from. Only, Find Font won't let me substitute it.
I can't change the font on the PDF either since it was not made by my department. I've tried Placing with and without a Frame. Tried embedded and linked.

>
I totally agree. I'd be a lot less stressed if that's how things were done here. We are a State University who's funding suddenly got cut. Work study students are cheap (though not as cheap as fixing up any messes they make). It's also cheaper to hire people who don't have complete training. Every program I use, I've learned on my own. I'm at least smart enough to ask questions and read the manual. When training that my employers can afford (i.e., free) comes up, I attend. The only saving grace of Aspergers - I learn programs (and programming) quickly - maybe not as efficiently as you - but better than those around me. I at least knew about embedding fonts, linking graphics and packaging (my old days on Mac OS7 with PageMaker and Photoshop)
And at least I can read instructions. "Place missing fonts in the Fonts Folder, which is located in the InDesign Application Folder." - Adobe Manual
I just looked. The folder is empty. And I gave them a print out of the instructions.
As for the Plug-in I asked to have installed "Missing Fonts Loader", they just dumped the plug-in into the Plug-in folder and didn't bother to read the "how to install" instructions. IT must have sent a work study student. Every time one touches my computer, something goes wrong or missing. Once they even installed the same program twice - 1 per partition.
Thank goodness the 'work around' did actually work. I'll will be working on fixing the problem the correct way, but I have to has this project ready now - not months from now.

• Embedding Adobe fonts in a folio: any issues?

Adobe's font licensing terms/faq don't seem to address embedding Adobe fonts in a DPS folio.
I'm assuming that folio-embedding terms will be the same as PDFs -- that is, fonts that are okay for print and preview embedding in a PDF are okay for folios, too.
Is there an official policy for folio embedding? Anyone have this issue come up already?
Thanks!

There's actually two issues here that need attention. If you're just outputting to default DPS folios then the pages become for all intents and purposes images so there's no real font-related issues. The more difficult area is if you're embedding your own html files that use Adobe fonts. I'd imagine things get more coplicated here.
