Embedding Adobe fonts in a folio: any issues?

Adobe's font licensing terms/faq don't seem to address embedding Adobe fonts in a DPS folio.
I'm assuming that folio-embedding terms will be the same as PDFs -- that is, fonts that are okay for print and preview embedding in a PDF are okay for folios, too.
Is there an official policy for folio embedding? Anyone have this issue come up already?
Thanks!

There's actually two issues here that need attention. If you're just outputting to default DPS folios then the pages become for all intents and purposes images so there's no real font-related issues. The more difficult area is if you're embedding your own html files that use Adobe fonts. I'd imagine things get more coplicated here.

  • Why does embedding Adobe fonts in EPUB cause all text to display as oblique?

I have been having this problem for a while now to various degrees, and I stopped using InDesign to build and export EPUB files for a long time because of it. Lately I have decided to try reintroducing InDesign into my EPUB workflow. However, I have found that whenever I try to export an EPUB 2 file from InDesign CC 2014.1 while embedding Adobe fonts, all the text in the EPUB displays as oblique when I open the resulting file in Sigil or Calibre. Removing and then re-adding the fonts with no obfuscation does not correct the issue. Not embedding the fonts during export -- or removing them from the EPUB entirely -- eliminates the display problem, but obviously I can't expect people to have these fonts installed on their computers.
I do believe most Adobe font licenses allow for embedding, so I don't think this is a security issue. For the sake of this discussion the issue I am having is with Arno Pro OTF (Regular, Italic, Bold).
I can't find anything about this on the web. Can anyone help me with this issue, or has anyone else experienced this at least?
    Thanks!
    Allen

Here's another piece of information to add to the puzzle. The first screenshot is from Calibre on an PC with Windows 8.1 (using Google Chrome as default search engine). The second is from Calibre on a Mac with Yosemite 10.10.1 (using Safari 8.0.2 as default search engine). Both with the same ePub file created on CC2014 on the Mac using Arno Pro for the Latin text, Adobe Song for Chinese, and Deja Vu Sans for the Hexagram

    Hi TacoRye.
Welcome to the club. When I saw this post, my eye twitched, my shoulders tensed up and I was brought back to a time (http://forums.adobe.com/message/4714549#4714549) when hitting stop did things that were wrong...just wrong. But as one who's been shut down and locked out of that topic, I'll kindly say that yes, multicam is a bit more enjoyable and free of that design flaw in Premiere CC. In fact, you'll probably like it for a few more things in CC as it's true that they have implemented several FCP favorites in the recent releases that even old schoolers probably say "hmmm, well now this is useful". I was a convert to CS6 from FCP this time last year and open to new things but that stop/pause issue drove me nuts. But it's fixed now in CC. And although I'm dealing with equally frustrating issues in CC on a daily basis unrelated to multcam, unless you use Warp Stabilizer a lot you probably won't experience them. All new software will have its bugs, etc. and I'm still holding out hope that the upcoming release will fix these issues. I have faith. Lots of exciting new features are coming in the next week or so which is all nice and good, but if the actual issues and bugs are fixed, I for one will be even happier.
Bottom line: I encourage you to update to Premiere CC if you do a lot of multicam. Just be sure to update to at least 7.0.1 (the current version as of this post) because the regular 7.0.0 version has a pretty awful multicam bug unrelated to the CS6 thing.
    Enjoy...and don't be scared.

  • Adobe Fonts Causing strange Issue

Out of the blue any of my installed Adobe fonts are causing me strange issues. I've even tried removing the fonts and reinstalling. Basically what is happen is when I change the font it changes certain characters to superscripts.
I've tried these same fonts in font managers, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, and other software programs and they work perfectly. This just started happening last night when working with another Adobe font.
Did I accidently set something or how should I fix this?
    Thanks

Could these be fake fonts? I have only downloaded free fonts from Font.com. I don't remember any of these names and they have only been here since I installed CS4. Plus the free fonts they offer are not Adobe and generally one typeface, and these have many. This is very strange.

  • Which fonts are in the Adobe 'Font Folio Select' and can be embedded in software and apps for distri

    Hi,
I need to select a few fonts for our client to choose from that can be legally embedded into their software for distribution.
    After reading this article:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/jlockman/2011/06/06/fonts-and-where-can-i-use-them/
it sounds like there is an Adobe 'Font Folio Select' that contains fonts we can use but I can't find any information about where to get hold of it.
I have spent hours hunting for fonts we can legally use and read lots of EULAs and still have no idea what fonts are available to developers!
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks

Thanks for reaching out to the Adobe Type Team.
While the James Lockman blog you referred to is correct that our product, Font Folio Select, contains only fonts that we control and for which we can offer the broadest rights, it is mistaken in its description of how it is offered.  Font Folio Select is actually a collection of fonts which we offer for server usage - for customers who need fonts for automated printing services, or for web based services which offer a font selection.  I'm very sorry for the misinformation.
Font licensing for applications is something for which we can provide you a direct quote.  If you would like to email me directly at the address listed below, I can get you in touch with a sales associate who can help you.  Additionally, if you provide me with a list of fonts you are interested in licensing, if there are fonts which are not ours, I can also provide you with foundry contact information so you can reach out to them directly.

  • Embedding an Adobe font using Cufon

Hi all, I need some clear clarification from Adobe or someone in the know on whether I can legally embed a font like VAG Rounded which has a 'Print & Preview' license using a technique such as Cufon (similar to sIFR)? The Cufon website (http://cufon.shoqolate.com/generate/) suggests that all Adobe fonts are 'Known to be safe' but I'd like to be sure to be sure!

I have been researching this for a while, to no avail. Adobe is probably freaking out about the possible, unforeseen implications of a blanket "Sure, go ahead" statement.
    Legalese Mumbo Jumbo
Reading through their SLA, Section 14.7.4 states (emphasis added):
You may convert and install the font software into another format for use in other environments, subject to the following conditions: A computer on which the converted font software is used or installed will be considered as one of your Permitted Number of Computers. Use of the font software you have converted will be pursuant to all the terms and conditions of this agreement. Such converted font software may be used only for your own customary internal business or personal use and may not be distributed or transferred for any purpose, except in accordance with Section 4.4 of this agreement.
Section 4.4 simply states that you can't transfer the "software" unless you forfeit your claims to it (ie. sharing).
    What's clear:
You can convert the font: The Cufón Generator converts your fonts to another format.
You can put the converted font on your web server: it's just another "permitted" computer.
    What's not so clear:
What in the world does "customary internal" use mean? I'm convinced that this is superseded by Section 14.7.5 (see below)
Just because you can put the font on your web server, doesn't mean you can make it available to the rest of the world. I'm convinced that the Cufón version, with it's attempts at domain-level restrictions and font subsetting, is not "distributing" the font. Bad people will always try to steal and always have some level of success. If they steal the font from my personal or business computer, am I guilty of "distributing"? So what is the difference between my web server and my laptop at Starbucks? They are both "permitted" computers, they are both accessible to the public, and neither of them are actively "handing over" Adobe's intellectual property.
    Is "embedding" the key?
    Section 14.7.5 states:
You may embed copies of the font software into your electronic documents for the purpose of printing and viewing the document. If the font software you are embedding is identified as “licensed for editable embedding” on Adobe’s website at http://www.adobe.com/type/browser/legal/embeddingeula.html, you may also embed copies of that font software for the additional purpose of editing your electronic documents. No other embedding rights are implied or permitted under this license.
A web page is an electronic document. It is intended for printing and viewing. If you don't allow your visitors to edit your page, it seems like you could ignore the "additional purpose of editing your electronic documents".
This isn't a formal legal opinion; Adobe are you listening?
Proceed at your own risk. Clearly, I'm not a lawyer or an official Adobe spokesperson. That being said, unless Adobe takes a stand on this issue, they are losing out on a potential revenue stream. Why? Because they either miss the opportunity to sell "web page embeddable" licenses OR their fonts get converted into clones and freely distributed all around the 'net. That last point includes the ability to produce print products in addition to web page rendering.
Adobe, sIRF is NOT the answer. It can be decompiled and the fonts extracted. Flash is NOT always an acceptable solution for the web. I have a ton of money invested in fonts, money I have willingly parted with. Just give us a sign that doesn't require lawyers and courts to interpret.
    Push this issue!
Fonts on the web were one of the first complaints of early web designers. Now, we can do some amazing and previously unthinkable things, yet the crown jewel is missing.

  • Lion, Font Book & Adobe Font Folio

    Howdy All,
I have a brand new Mac mini with Lion installed (of course) and I'm having a bear of a time loading the Adobe Font Folio. In general, I'm having a really hard time with Font Book on other Lion, late vintage, machines. I've tried every counter measure in my bag of tricks: boot in safe mode, Onyx cleaning, new user accounts, deleting plists, etc. At first I ignored the Font Book warnings, then I've heeded every one and not loaded the fonts. On my latest attempt, with a new user account account I have 444 fonts loaded, with the vast majority turned off, but Font Book hangs. I suppose I can always flatten the machine and start from scratch, but I'm just wondering if someone has an insight into the Lion/Font Book situation that I don't have. For the record, I have about 600 fonts running on about 30 Snow Leopard machines without any drama.
    Thanks in advance for ideas.

    Same here. My thread: https://discussions.apple.com/message/15995212#15995212
I've had no replies. Have you looked at Activity Monitor while this is happening? check it out. I think i'm just going to go back to Leopard, don't know what else to do. Do you have an SSD in there?

  • Developer / Commercial License for Embedding an Adobe Font

I'm developing an application in which I'd like to embed one of the Adobe fonts. Customers using this application will be able to create documents that would be passed to a professional printer. The font would be encrypted and embedded in the application. The PDF files are transitory and for print only and would not be for any other use.
I'd like to know what kind of license that I would need from Adobe for this and who exactly I could talk to about getting the license. I've talked with direct sales, customer support, and volume licensing. No one was able to help me. Any additional information would be helpful.
    Thank you.

  • Adobe Font Folio - no single user version?

As my business has grown, I had decided it was time to purchase a full Adobe
font library. I just looked at Adobe.com and see that their Adobe Font Folio
only comes in 5,10 or 20 user versions. As I am a one-person office, any of
those is overkill (and over priced). Is there truly no single user version
available? I would even consider an older version than the present (11) if
it is OT (I am unfamiliar with when Adobe switched over to all OT in font
    folio).
    Any ideas?

Your comment about Adobe going out of their way to hide the licensing agreement is blatantly untrue and inflammatory. Unlike many other software companies, Adobe makes it EULAs (End User License Agreements)
    freely and
readily available for end-user download and/or inspection
at any time via its web site. At the bottom of the home page
    is a link to
Product license agreements bringing you to
. On that page you will find every Adobe product listed including all the
Type products, each with a pointer to web pages with the respective EULAs.
In terms of the number of users permitted to use a particular license and restrictions (such as not sharing one license amongst a group of five independent designers, for example), this is spelled out specifically fairly early in the EULA for Type products.
Adobe hides no aspects of its EULAs and does not claim rights to change those EULAs after you agree to them.

  • Adobe font folio 10

    Hi Everyone,
Anyone have list of Adobe font folio 10 fonts?
I have searched all over but not found.
It would be great if anyone give me the list of Font folio 10.
    Thanks,
    Shonky

    Thanks, Thomas.
All involved are on Macs. We are contracted to edit and then PDF the
InDesign files--we're a design and production house, rather than a
printer--so unfortunately we can't just get PDFs from them.
We are going to try running all PDFs on their end, and see if the
problem runs both ways--that is, see if they have similar problems
PDFing files with the newer font, as we have had PDFing files with
    the older font.
I will let you know how it goes. It's still quite a mystery. I'm
asking them to double-check that they aren't accidentally running Type
1 instead of OTF on their end.
    Thanks again,

  • Adobe Font Folio 11 for Mobile Devices

    Hi,
I wonder if it is allowed to embed any font from Adobe Font Folio 11 family to use in a paid mobile application. If not, could anyone please give me a suggestion on the best font solution for a multi-language mobile application?
    Thanks in advance,
    Genc

I don't believe you have the right to embed a font into a device or its application for your use. Into a pdf used on the device no problem. Raster the images of letters also no problem.

  • Has anyone had any issues using Adobe CS or Pro Tools on the LATEST MacBook

I am about to purchase a new MacBook Pro and would like to know if there has been any issues with the latest MacBook Pro with programs such as Pro Tools, Adobe Creative Suite, or any programs that have anything to do with rendering. Please let me know what's up.

No problems with CS5, the only suggestion is that if you're going to do a lot of rendering get the i7 CPU, max out the RAM (not necessarily from Apple, OWC have very good quality and prices) and get the 7200rpm hard drive.

my photos are not printing right with adobe manages color but works when i use printer manages color. never had any issues untill a week ago.

We use CS6, yes we calibrate using x-rite. I have always had adobe manage colors when printing. This problem just occurred, all my settings are the same as they have been for years. The only thing we did lately is do an update to CS6. We thought it might be our printer but when we use the printer manages color it works fine, The problem with adobe manages color is it is not blending the light highlights like on top of the cheeks with the colors around the cheeks  and its putting a faint red between the two it just does not have a smooth transition. I printed a photo that I had printed 4 months ago with no issue, and this time it had the issue that I am dealing with now. Somehow the photo shop manages color is not getting the right info to my printer.
    I set paper type
    set quality
    no color adjustment

I realy have defficulty getting embedded "Adobe Arabic" font to work, beleive me, I have tried lots of different approaches, but it won't join the glyphs properly using it as Embedded font.
Please try typing the word مُعَلِم into the textlayout component. notice this words uses the combination of letters and ligatures. if you choose to use the "Adobe Arabic" as a system Font assuming you have already installed the Adobe Arabic into the system, it shows as مُعَلِم, which is correct.
However if you choose to use the Adobe Arabic font as an Embeded font, it displays the word as the above but puts spaces between each letter.
I have tried brian's solution "Using a font SWF in a Flash Profession CS4 application" the World Language application, and still shows wrong and it does not join the glyphs properly if and only if you use letter and ligatures like the word مُعَلِم.
in your example you have used the word الإخاء which renders properly but try using مُعَلِم and see what happens.
Please have a look at the attached file for more information.
