Embedding audio in EPUBs

Hi,
Is it possible to embed audio in EPUBs created with InDesign CS6?
When I try to place an mp3 or mp4 in InDesign, I get "Cannot place this file. No filter found for requested operation" and "Import failed", respectively ...

I just tried it with CS6 8.0.1 and iBooks on the latest iPad, and it worked without having to edit the XHTML.
I placed a headline ("VIDEO"), followed by an MP4 video, followed by "AUDIO", followed by an MP3 audio onto a page.
I used the Media panel to choose a skin for the movie and checked the Show Controller button. I gave the audio a default preview appearance.
I used the Articles panel to choose export order, but set everything else as default, exported as EPUB 2.01.
I copied to iTunes and synced it to my iPad.
Both video and audio played the first time:
In CS5 and 5.5, the video and audio elements weren't correctly written into the XHTML but it seems to be working fine for me in CS6 8.0.1

  • Audio in Epub Ebooks

I'm hoping someone can help me.
I have a problem that is unique to the ebook I  am currently working on: it has mp3 files embedded into many of the  chapters. Everything works great when I convert my Indesign file to pdf.  Unfortunately, when I convert to epub, and because of the severe  limitations of e-readers (including the Kindle), I have to come up with a new strategy. The mp3 files, 63 minutes in total, are crucial to the story (nonfiction espionage).
The options I believe open to me at this point are:
    1)  have a companion folder of all audio that I can zip with the epub file.  The reader can then download both and save the audio files in his  e-reader's audio section. Then I can have links from the epub file to a  specific  mp3  file in the audio folder.
    2) have URL links in the ebook  where the reader can go and listen to a particular mp3. This might be  preferable since the reader can't tamper with my mp3 files
Problem  is, I can't figure out how to do either 1) or 2). Can anyone please help  me? Also, if someone has a better idea for getting audio into an epub  ebook, please let me know.
Of course there's a final option, do  an epub ebook without the audio -- but I would really hate to do that  since I feel it will be an inferior product. I strongly believe that ebooks should be moving in the direction of interactivity -- embedded audio or video. That gives an ebook a huge advantage over print editions. I've already done a  pre-release sale (of the pdf version only) and readers have told me that  the mp3s make the ebook come alive.
    Thank you in advance,
    John Pansini

I'm just learning ePub myself, but I'll try to help you as much as I can. What you're trying to do is on the cutting edge, and you may have difficulties implementing it.
Regarding the two options you list, I'm pretty sure #1 will not work. I don't think ePub files can reliably link to a folder of files outside of the ePub which would reside somewhere on the reader's file system. I think #2 would be worth exploring. I think you'd need to have a web server where you could post your audio files, and create URLs to each of them. That probably falls the the category of using XHTML and CSS, and you'd either have to learn that yourself by using Dreamweaver or similar application, or by hand-coding (or you'd have to find someone who could set it up for you).
That seems to be changing in the future. Currently the iBook application (iPad and iPhone) supports video files. According to Liz Castro's excellent book "EPUB Straight to the Point," "The iPad only supports video compressed with H.264 and saved in MP4/M4V format." I know you can create video files which are audio only. I've done that with QuickTime, and I'm sure you could convert that to MP4/M4V. But that would not work with other eBook readers. In particular, the Kindle is pretty lame for supporting anything other than text.
I believe I've heard that a newer ePUB standard just announced (the name of which escapes me at the moment) will also support embedded video files.

  • Safari 3.2.1 on mac fails to play embedded audio content.

my homepage, http://bloodnok.net/ has an embedded audio snippet. the audio snippet is loaded using an <object> tag. the page is xhtml transitional (don't want to be strict) & validates on the w3c site.
when i visit the site with firefox or opera from my mac, the audio plays on page load as expected. when i visit it from winxp (in fusion) using firefox, opera, safari, or google chrome, the audio also plays. ie6, of course, doesn't work, but who cares?
but here's the thing; when i visit the site with safari 3.2.1 from the mac, the audio doesn't play. if i open the "web inspector" (from the develop menu), it indicates the audio file wasn't even downloaded.
i've "reset" safari with no change in behaviour.
is there a known bug in the handling of <object> tag requests specific to the osx implementation? given this works on almost all other browsers & with safari on winxp, it's curious that it doesn't on safari 3.2.1 on the mac.
or does it work on yours & there's something else going on with my mac?

yeah i did, thanks. that breaks all the other browsers & it made no difference on safari.
i'm playing with a macbook at the apple store & its safari won't autoplay the audio, so it's apparently not my mac ...

  • A way to link to embedded audio player

I am very new to this and am trying to add the audio (mp3)
from a conference that my office held to our website. I wanted to
have a list of the presenters at the conference to the left of my
page with each name being a link to one embedded audio player on
the right. Is this possible to do? I can figure out how to embed
the player with a playlist and just have the viewer control it from
the player but I would prefer to use a sleeker player that does not
incorporate a playlist viewer - so the ability to be able to link
multiple links to the one embedded player would be perfect.

Search Google for "free flash mp3 player". There are many
    that you can
    incorporate.

  • Embedded audio file won't play in Safari

I'm trying to plan an embedded audio file in safari, but it just never loads. Similar files on the same page are marked 'Flash 9 is required to listen to audio' - I have listened to these files before without any problems.
I have Flash 11.5 installed, have tried uninstalling/reinstalling Flash and all the fixes for when YouTube videos won't play in Safari but to no avail.
    Any suggestions?

You will really need to upload it if you want someone to help you troubleshoot the problem.  It could be any number of reasons.
If and when you do upload, make sure that you upload the supporting folder that is created when you create a swf on a page.

  • Capturing SDI + EMbedded Audio with DeckLink Pro HD

    Hi,
Has anyone captured multiple audio streams with the DeckLink card ?
I wish to capture the embedded audio + video direct to the timeline using Premiere CS3 [ currently using trial version ]
    Thanks
    Mark

Yes Mark, I do it all the time with CS2 (haven't got around to doing it in CS3). I have a few Blackmagic products so all you do when capturing via SDI is go to the capture settings and set it to capture audio as 5.1 which really means capture 6 audio streams. Obviously 2 steams would be empty when capturing a digibeta.

  • Movies: Embedded audio sometimes exporting, sometimes not...?

Hi, I'm working on a project right now synching to a .mov file running in Logic. When I go to 'Export Audio to Movie...', Logic is also putting the embedded audio from the .mov file into my export which I don't want. Weirdly, yesterday morning when I did it, this didn't happen. Logic 7 used to bring up a dialogue box where you could select the embedded audio if you wanted it in the bounce. This doesn't seem to be happening anymore, or has something changed?
In the Video 'Settings' the Sound Output is set to Mute and the Movie Volume is right down. I need to send this off today, so if someone can help clear this up I'd be very grateful. I'll happily supply any more info.
    Thanks!

Hi, Looks like I'm WAY too late to actually help but... I recently encountered the same infuriating issue!!! In the end it was resolved when I realized that I actually had to deselect (click the space away from the text) the original audio file on the dialogue box. It's the last one to come up when your exporting (saving etc...). the one that says:
**Select the audio tracks of movie to keep in new movie**
I'm not sure I articulated that one too cleanly but I hope you get the gist.

  • Embedded audio

    Hi,
after some years I finally managed to install Adobe Reader for PPC, after I set the right registry key. Now I wanted to view a PDF with embedded audio. I tried two ways: 1st I copied the pdf directly on the SD-card. This PDF I can display but on all adio-links I just get red question-marks. 2nd I used ActiveSync to copy the PDF including some conversion. This PDF brings the PDA to a halt when I load it with Adobe Reader. The same happens with the "Adobe Reader-Benutzerhandbuch" (manual/German). So is it possible to get the audio?
    Dimitri

    Brian,
If I choose the Fixed Timing option in KN '08 and delete the default duration values, it doesn't let me save the file. Nothing happens when I click Next. If I instead try to set either value to zero, it doesn't let me edit the other value. This is a definite change from KN 3.
However, if I instead choose manual advance, my timings are preserved in the exported movie except for the first slide, which requires a click or other action to advance.
    Weird.

  • Video embedded audio track names wrong in iOS6?

I have an iPad 1 (iOS 5) and iPad 2 (iOS4) and an iPad 3 (new iPad) with iOS6
For our application we have a webapp that can show video. The video is transcoded to m4v and containst embedded subtitles and languages.
In the iOS4 and iOS 5 device I can maximize the video and select an audio track from the list (Englis, French, Spanish). If I run the same webapp in iOS6 and select the same movie I can select languages as well but they are named "Stereo, Stereo, Stereo".
To make it even worse: i also have an iPod touch with iOS6. If I press the "Language and subtitle" button while playing the movie (again same webapp and movie) the player removes the bottom controls at all, and it is not possible to play/pause etc anymore.
Are these bugs in the iOS6 player? If so, is Apple working on a hotfix update to solve them ?

Additional info that I just found:
the movie runs in an webapp in the video tag
I start the movie with embedded audio and subtitles in portrait orientation of the device
When the movie is playing I turn the device to landscape
Now the subtitle button shows up. Press the subtitle button
The controls at the bottom seem to dissappear
Turn the device back to portrait
    Press the Done button
See the Audio / Subitle selection menu popping up shortly above the movie
    The controls now are restored.
Seems that the audio / subtitle selection menu is opening behind the movie. This happens in iPod only, it does not happen in iPad with iOS6. It also does not happen with the normal video player App.
Any way to use the iOS builtin video player app for the video tag in a web app?

  • Embedded audio doesn't play on iPad or iPhone

I have embedded HTML code in my homepage for audio to play:
    <embed src="playit.mp3" autostart="true" loop="false" hidden="true"></embed>
which plays OK on desktops and laptops, but does not play on iPads or iPhones.
Does anyone else experience this with their embedded audio code?
Is this phenomenon a quirk of iPad/iPhone that requires some special coding?
    All feedback welcome.

If you're hosting with Business Catalyst, please re-try publishing All Files through Upload options (and not just the modified files), clear mobile browser cache and check again. If that doesn't help, please share the site URL.

  • Embedding audio into indesign for playback in pdf

Hello, i'm trying to create a pdf book of educational lectures with audio of the transcribed lectures embedded into the pdf so the user can read and listen along as they like. my solution to this was break up the audio into sections and embed using buttons.  this way, the user just has to mouseroll over a button in the margin to play the particular section they want to listen to.  there are about three sections per page. the downside of this solution is that the audio doesn't keep playing of course, it just plays that section then stops. i'm now wondering if it might be possible to just have one audio file instead of 60, and make buttons (for each section) that open up the file at a particular point in the audio corresponding to the section; in other words (my question), is it possible to make a button that opens an audio file and plays it from a particular point, not just from the start?  I would appreciate any suggestions.

no pardon necessary! i need to embed the audio file because it contains the original lecture, that's what I want the reader to have access to while reading the transcription, since the transcription is not meant to substitute for but rather supplement the audio. for example, in the transcribed text I have put "[...]" for segments of the recording that are inaudible. If I put the original audio into the file then the reader has the option of going to that specific section and listening to it themselves. basically i want to create a pdf document of a lecture. I want to be able to highlight important parts of the lecture, search the lecture for key-words, and scan it quickly for specific items of interest, but I also want easy access to the original audio because tone of voice isn't translatable into text (and the tone of voice in this case is important for meaning), and because there are many segments that I couldn't hear, so I'm trying to figure out the best way to link sections of the text to specific sections of the audio.

  • Possible to play a single embedded audio clip over multiple pages?

    hi
i'm wondering if it's possible to have a single audio clip play over more than one page in an interactive pdf generated in indesign cs5.5?  in the media preview it seems to work but when i export to pdf the audio stops playing when i move to the next page, even when the "stop on page flip" is NOT checked in the media object options box.
what i want is the oppositite of an object with multiple states; looking for a single media object with multiple pages.  thoughts?  i'm publishing song lyrics, need to have the audio playing through the whole text of the piece when it runs to the next page.
    thanks

In the other forum I stated:
It can be done by choosing the right option but it has been my experience that the continuous playback only works in Adobe Acrobat and not in any version of Adobe Reader across different devices including computers.
Your best bet would be to publish an interactive Flash file and if you need that to be on an iOS device get someone with an iOS developer license to convert the published Flash file into an iOS app.  You might even be able to convert the Flash file into an epub like a digital magazine but I am inexperienced with this aspect of InDesign.  There are good tutorials that I've seen briefly on creating epub digital magazines from InDesign though so do some research on it and report back.
Have you explored any of this thus far?  I hope you get some good results.
