Embedding items from Illustrator into Indesign

I am working on a 100-page book. Instead of importing or placing my Illustrator charts and graphs, I am embedding them into the Indesign file. I am doing this because for the most part they come in crisper and clearer than when importing them. The client wants to be able to see the charts clearly and it also makes it easier for me to line them up in the layout.
Everything works like a charm except that with every few charts, I get this message when pasting:
"This command would create a large number of page items and would severely degrade performance.Data will be placed as an embedded file."
In this case, I get the rough preview image as though I had imported the files. It is hard to predict when this happens. Does anyone know a fix for this?
I am using CS3; System 10.5.8.

There's no fix (That I know of). After a certain amount of vector points, InDesign places an embedded file only.
I tend to place alot of vectors in InDesign for ease of editing, but I keep them simple.
Note: Placed vectors will not export to epub, so You'd have to put them back in illustrator, if you need that function.
For " crisper and clearer", I'm not sure what you mean? For looking at onscreen? It shouldn't affect a PDF.
And, are you using high quality preview when you place the illustator images?

  • Jagged vector graphics from Illustrator in Indesign

Using CS3, Leopard, have all updates.
I'm having problems with vector graphics created in Illustrator getting jagged when dragged from Illustrator to Indesign (or copied and pasted or placed as Illustrator file). They look jagged (stair stepped) in InDesign, also in Acrobat after exporting a pdf, and after printing. The vector image in question is a rectangle with rounded corners with an "Envelope Distort - make with warp" applied to it. Is the problem that I'm trying to drag an envelope distorted graphic into InDesign? Are there settings to make this work?

"They look jagged (stair stepped) in InDesign, also in Acrobat after exporting a pdf, and after printing."
Doesn't sound like a screen preview issue to me.
If a placed AI file has jagged edges on print and in PDF, but looks good in Illy, then something is amiss. Your transparency settings could be set to rasterize the line art. Make sure you're using one of the canned flattener presets (high, med, low) if there is any transparency in your page (little checkered icon by the page icon in the page palette).

  • Copy & Paste from Illustrator to InDesign CS4

    Hi,
I am aware that there are issues when copying/pasting from Illustrator to InDesign, in particular:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/InDesign/6.0/WSa285fff53dea4f8617383751001ea8cb3f-6bdda.html
    I have the following problems:
1- I copy and paste text from Illustrator to InDesign on the same platform and some (not all) of the text is converted to outline in InDesign. The same font is available to both applications. Why this behaviour?
2- I copy and paste objects containing text from Illustrator to InDesign and some of the objects appear to have moved respective positions when pasted into InDesign. Is this to be expected?
Are there solutions to these problems? Note that if I expand everything in Illustrator prior to copying and pasting into InDesign, none of these issues occur, but everything is obviously in outline form, with the limitations it entails.
My clipboard settings are as indicated in the link above, but I have tried other settings with no more luck.
(Important: Before pasting a graphic, make sure that Illustrator is configured to copy as AICB (see Illustrator Help). In InDesign, make sure that Prefer PDF When Pasting isn’t selected in the Clipboard Handling preferences. If these options aren’t set properly, the Illustrator graphic cannot be edited in InDesign.)
It is not practical for me to create an Illustrator file for each of the Illustrator graphics and import those files via Place into InDesign. I must use Copy/Paste.
    I use CS4.
    Thanks.

You can copy/paste from Illy to ID by selecting the text with the type tool in Illy and then pasting it into ID. You will not be able to maintain the formatting. If you want to maintain the appearance the text will be converted to outlines.
If you need to get anything other than very simple objects from Illy to ID then you should save as AI and use the file > place command to place those objects as linked graphics into ID.
Your closing statement is irrelevant. Whether you like it or not, this is the way it is.

  • Best practice from illustrator to indesign

So im a student and Im just figuring things out...
what is the best practice of importing from illustrator to indesign?
    making an eps file?
what is an eps file? is it editable in indesign or illustrator?
    thanks

Actually, in the general case, Adobe Illustrator is absolutely not a general purpose EPS editor. Adobe Illustrator is capable of fully and properly editing only EPS files saved from the current or earlier versions of Adobe Illustrator and even then, you must have any and all fonts referenced by the EPS file, even if the font is embedded in the EPS file, installed on your computer system. Adobe Illustrator's imaging model is a subset of Adobe PostScript and as such, opening an EPS file generated by any software other than the current or earlier version of Adobe Illustrator may yield corrupted, modified, or otherwise incorrect results and this is especially true if the EPS references more than one color space. This includes EPS saved or exported from Acrobat and InDesign.

  • Import live objects from Illustrator to InDesign

Hi, I want to import objecs from Illustrator to InDesign. However, I need live objects (including e.g. texts, styles, swatches). Currently, I know only two possibilities:
    1. copy in AI and paste in ID. This will copy the objects but e.g. text is broken into curves, no styles are copied.
    2. place AI document. This way I cannot modify the document in ID (I have to go back to AI), I also cannot use the text styles from the original document for other texts created directly in ID
Is there any other possibility? In reality I don't need to do the import via GUI. If I can make a plugin or script for this it would be enough. I have experience with creating plugins for AI but ID is very different internally. I have studied the SDK but I still did not find any possibility how to import the data.
    can anybody help me? thanks.

Sorry, but you've already discovered all there is.

  • How do you Place rtf files from LibreOffice into InDesign CS6

I am new to InDesign CS6. I am having a problem Placing LibreOffice rtf files into InDesign.
I am using LibreOffice 4.3.2.2, Lotus WordPro, and Windows 7. I am saving my work in rtf files. Each page has two columns.
Placing rtf files from WordPro into InDesign works with no problems, but - I wonder just how long WordPro will continue to work with Windows 7 so I would like to switch to LibreOffice.
When I Place a rtf file that has two columns from LibreOffice into InDesign, I get a loaded text cursor, but nothing loads. I can take this same file, remove the columns so there is only one column, and it loads just as it should. Further, if I load the one column file into a Master set up for two columns, the file loads into two columns with all the proper formating.
Please guide me in how to Place the LibreOffice two column rtf files into InDesign.
      Thanks.

Thanks to everyone who read about my problem. I have solved it myself by using "RTF Import Options."

  • Is it possible to preserve the layer name when I copy and paste from Illustrator into Photoshop?

Is it possible to preserve the layer name when I copy and paste from Illustrator into Photoshop?
At the moment it just appears as "Vector Smart Object" in Photoshop and I have to take another step and change the layer name.
    Thank you!

Not that I know. PS doesn't care for these kinds of things and uses its own naming system.

Third-party plugins for InDesign can automate the process. Here's a thread from InDesignSecrets.com forums:

  • Smart objects from Illustrator and Indesign dimensions problem

I have been trying to find an answer to this problem for 6 months now and surprised no one else has tried to find any answers.
When we import something from illustrator or indesign as a smart object, for some reason the objects width and height will not keep their  dimensions in proportion.
When the asset is first imported as a smart object it says the width and height are exactly 100%. However after that if you try to change the dimensions they will be out of proportion, usually the width will be 100% but the height will be out by about 1% to begin with. When you scale up, the percentages fall further and further apart. See image attached.
This has become a real problem for our workflow as the creative director insists we must  correct every layer which has this issue by typing in the sizes manually, but then this doesnt always fix the problem either depending on which version of photoshop you are using.
Why does this happen, and how can we fix it for good?
    Thanks, Chris.

I do not have the answer for I don't have illustrator and indesign.  I do have Photoshop and have notice that it try to match resolutions and maintain sizes but it may also scale placed object etc. There are some some Photoshop preferences setting that can effect some operations. Photoshop also has support for non square pixels.
Make some test if illustrator and indesign have setting for pixel aspect ratio and DPI resolution. Make sure all documents have the same pixel aspect ratio and same DPI resolution and that the vector object to be imported are not larger then the Photoshop document their being imported to.
Thanks for the suggestions, but none of these would be the answer. Illustrator is Vector so it does not use DPI / Pixel aspect ratios etc.

  • Placing Named Ranges from Excel into InDesign

    InDesign CS3 5.0.4, Excel 2003, Windows XP.
I have placed named ranges from Excel into InDesign and linked them. The Excel file consists of multiple worksheets. I go back now a few months later to update the files. I go to place a couple of new ranges from new worksheets and they don't show up under the correct sheet. ALL my named ranges now show up under the first worksheet only.
    Anybody ever had this happen?
    JAG

I've upgraded to CS5.5. Ninety-nine times out of a hundred placing named ranges into InDesign from Excel works fine. One time out of a hundred I still see all my named ranges on the first worksheet and none on the rest of the worksheets where I originally named them.
I save the Excel files as XLS.
Am I the only one in the universe having this problem?
    Can I get an answer?

  • Importing from Illustrator into Photoshop

    Hello
I am struggling to learn Creative Suite CS4, and it is very hard.
Can anyone help me with the following problem.
I have made some line art in Illustrator CS4 using a wacom pen and the pencil tool. it has about 8 layers.
I have brought the artwork into Photoshop CS4 so that I can color it in Photoshop. I find that it has been merged into just one layer in Photoshop.
Is this what is supposed to happen? I expected the drawing to still have all the layers intact.
can anyone tell me how to move stuff from Illustrator into Photoshop and keep the layers structure?
    Thanks for any advice.

How did you bring the art into Photoshop?
Try File > Export > PSD in Illustrator and tick the "Write Layers" option in teh second dialog window.
Be aware though... you can't maintain layers and have traditional smart objects at the same time.
If you want smart objects and layers, you need to select an AI layer, copy. Move to PS, create a new layer, paste. Then repeat for each AI layer. And finally realign all the layers in PS so they are positioned correctly.

  • How to get color group from illustrator into flash

    Hi,
I have difficulties with the color management between Illustrator and Flash.
I have the original vector files in Illustrator and would like to use the color groups, I have in Illustrator, also in Flash.
One way doing it is using the Kuler.
But I can not get the colors from Illustrator into Kuler.
Can someone advice how to manage that process?
    Many thanks in advance!

I'm fairly new to this having only recently started using these tools again after six years, but will try to help! Go to "Explore", find a theme you like and click the "Edit" selection when you mouse over it. From there you can edit it or save a copy of it as is as whatever name you wish. In Photoshop or Illustrator, they will now show up in Adobe Color Themes (Window > Extensions > Adobe Color Themes) under "All Themes" in the drop menu. In these apps (and others that are Adobe Color Theme aware), any themes that you favorite on the site will show up under "My Favorites".
If you're using Fireworks, it's different as it still uses Kuler (Window > Extensions > Kuler).  Themes you save or favorite on the site don't automatically show up there, however you can search for themes by name, and if you select "Custom" from the theme group dropdown, you can enter up to four names that will show up in that dropdown menu and produce as many results as the window can hold for an individual term. For instance, I saved a theme as "Copy of Industrial Calm" which if I enter in the search box, the "group" is a group of one. However, if I just type "Industrial", the window fills with options, yet there are MANY more results on the Adobe Color site and you would have to be specific to get the right one in that window.
    Hope that helps.
