Embedding traditional chinese fonts in pdf

Hi,
I am trying to embed traditional chinese fonts in the mdf template.
I created a soft font catridge using Angsana font and with symbolsets big5 and GB.
I have also made the registry changes as mentioned in the below specified article:
http://www.adobe.com/support/products/enterprise/knowledgecenter/c4230.pdf
But when i test the mdf it shows junk chracters instead of chinese...
Can any one help me out...?
Thanks in advance
Bhagya.

Thanks Tom. Yeah, I understand that PDFs are not designed to work like word-processing files, etc., and the need to have the Chinese text copy over well is really just to prove that the document is searchable (i.e. if it can copy a short section of text Ok, then it means the characters are recognized by the PDF reader and I can search the document, which is my main goal.)
The problem I mentioned with Preview, etc., is actually a new one; one that has become a big problem for me only in the last few weeks. Before, I never had this issue. I'm not sure what changed, but I was suspecting MacKeeper and their "language cluster" cleaning feature, where it "helps" you by removing unused fonts. Though, I can't quite confirm that this has played a role. I just completely reinstalled the OS thinking that this would fix the issue by installing all the original fonts again, if MacKeeper did indeed remove the fonts these PDF programs use when editing or saving PDF files. However.....unfortunately....the problem is still here.
So, that developer I mentioned in the first thread who said this is an OS X issue may indeed be correct.
And just to be clear, I have confirmed that the PDF's I working with do have the fonts embedded already. It is only when I alter them and then save or export from Preview, Skim, Nomad, etc., that the character information gets stripped out and I'm left with a document that one can read but cannot search. I can't even OCR it because this problem also affects my OCR software, as if it can't get access to the fonts needed to embed in the recognized PDF.
Any other thoughts? I'd appreciate any you have.

I found that my iphone can not always display the traditional chinese font.
Sometimes it just show some symbol.
Can you give us some detail about exactly when that happens? On a web page? If so, what url? Email? Text Message?
In any case, I suspect there is nothing you can do about it other than give Apple the details so they can fix it:

  • Problems Embedding Traditional Chinese

    Hello,
I am trying to embed Traditional Chinese characters and I'm having issues.
I've embeded the font through the Flash IDE (property inspector), and I've used a regular TextField
    and a TLFTextField.
The TLFTextField doesn't seem to embed all the characters properly and I don't understand what
the issue is and how to fix it.
Here is a screenshot of the SWF. As you can see, some characters look like the device font.
On Windows, some characters do not display/were not properly embedded.
Has anyone else come across this issue ? Am I missing something ?
Any reason why no all the Traditional Chinese characters get embeedded ?
    Thanks,

  • Cannot display Chinese font in PDF Report

I am using Oracle Report Server 11g currently. I have met a problem that the chinese font cannot be displayed in the PDF report which is generated by oracle report. Can anyone help ?

    Hi...
You can achieve this in XML report.
As per metalink Note id ID 842856.1,
    1. Copy the following font files from $FND_TOP/resource to the /lib/fonts directory (under OA_JRE_TOP).
    ALBANYWT.ttf - "single-byte" characters only
ALBANWTJ.ttf - Unicode font with Japanese Han Ideographs
ALBANWTK.ttf - Unicode font with Korean Han Ideographs
ALBANWTS.ttf - Unicode font with Simplified Chinese Han Ideographs
ALBANWTT.ttf - Unicode font with Traditional Chinese Han Ideographs
    2. Restart the Apache.

    Sathiya.

  • I need a traditional Chinese font

I am having a number of graphics designed for a Mandarin audience. The translated documents have arrived in traditional Chinese, described as Symbol MingLiU in microsoft software. Where do I get access to the same or similiar font for use in Illustrator?

    You can purchase it here:
    http://www.ascenderfonts.com/font/mingliu-traditional-chinese.aspx
The characters should be readable with any Unicode font that comprises the Chinese glyphs, such as Arial Unicode MS. Note, however, that MingLiU is a "Mincho" (serif) style face, whereas Arial is a "Gothic" (sans serif) style face.
You might get by with MS Mincho, which you might already have on your system. (It ships with MS Office, although you might have to actively install it.)

  • Safari and Traditional Chinese Fonts

Quick question...Why isn't Safari 3.0.4 rendering Traditional Chinese text on some websites anymore? The older Tiger version rendered everything beautifully. Specifically having problems with pull down tabs with hyperlinked text within. Having no problems with Firefox on the same sites. Am I able to run an older version of Safari in Leopard?
    Thanks!

I do not think it has anything to do with the fact that it is Traditional Chinese in particular. It is probably something generic with any encoding in that kind of position. The same problem appears in Safari for Windows, btw.
Unfortunately I do not have any fix. Changing language of Mac OS to Traditional Chinese does not help, and neither does changing to Big 5 encoding manually. The best work around is probably to use Firefox.
If you do not get any further help here, you could try asking at http://groups.google.com/group/chinesemac .

  • PDF in Chinese Font

    Hi all,
I found that the adobe reader can not open a PDF file embedded with chinese font "Ming(for ISO10646)", but other PDF readers do it, say Foxit, google doc. I've attached the PDF file.
    Thanks a lot.

The document wasn't created with Adobe Acrobat. Why did you post your question in the forum for Adobe Acrobat?
At open I get the error message: "Dictionary keys must be direct name objects."

  • EMBEDDING POSTSCRIPT FONTS INTO PDFS

Used Quark Xpress 3.31 on Windows 98/Millenium/2000, made ps file, distilled to PDF. Worked great. All fonts embedded in PDF. Files worked great for prepress. Can't update Quark because of maths program I use that won't work on later Quark versions and can’t get math program upgrade. Trying to update to Windows XP. With XP postscript fonts will not embed in PDFs via Quark 3.31/Acrobat Distiller 4. Fonts will only show in Courier on PDF, although using Word same fonts will distill and show in PDF preferences/fonts list – so fonts are working. Have tried Universal Document Converter 5.3 as straight PDF converter. Fonts show on PDF but not showing as fonts embedded in preferences/fonts in PDF. Trying Adobe Acrobat Pro 10 but does not seem to work either. I think it is an issue with Quark 3.31 and later Windows platforms. Any suggestions out there on problem/solution? I may have to be stuck in the middle ages with software. Thanks

I may have to be stuck in the middle ages with software
People have the best experience when their application software, their OS software and their hardware are moving forward together. But you've pretty much just stuck with what you have for the past 16 years.
I'd guess that the problem is that QuarkXPress 3.31 (which came out in 1996, according to Wikipedia) is probably incompatible with Windows XP (which came out in 2001).
Either you stick with what you have or you'll have to replace all your software. Assuming you want to stick with QuarkXPress, you'll have to find new math software which works with a later version of QuarkXPress. This will then require you to probably upgrade your hardware and update your Windows software. Since you waited so long, this will take some work.

  • Convert simplified to traditional chinese

I have opened an epub in digital editions and it is showing up with simplified chinese font.  Is there a setting to change the display to traditional chinese font?

    Hi,
I have a .html file created be FrontPage. The encoding was automatically set to Windows1252 (I did not pay attention). I did not change it. I can manually edit it to include Chinese characters, without problem. But the Chinese characters in the files are special code, something like:
    有三个部分
There is not problem to edit them or showing them using FrontPage, or FireFox. But, now, I want to convert them from simplified Chinese characters to traditional ones. There are many tools to convert Chinese chars, but they do not convert &#26377 in html files.
Where can I find the mapping table for these kind of coding?
Any information would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. You have a character set 1 and a character set 2. You assume that you have a character that is in set 1 which also has a representation in set 2.
If in fact there is such a mapping then you simply look for the characters in the source, look the mapping up, and the write out to a new location replacing the old character (data) with the new.
The first step of course is identifying explicitly what character set 1 and set 2 are. Then you find something that has a full representation of each of those. And then you map, manually, from one to the other.
Note that in the above there is in fact the possiblity that there is no mapping. And actually since it appears that you have used tools that map many characters but not this one then it is likely that this is exactly the case.

  • Interactive pdf form with text fields. Chinese fonts

    Hi All
We have designed an interactive pdf with text fields. We need the text fields to be in a Chinese font. I understand that this cant be done in Indesign (change the inputting font to Chinese) I have moved the file over to Acrobat Pro and used the text property to amend the font to Simsun but when we try it out the font is still in English. Any ideas on how to remedy the problem??
    Thank you in advance
    Paul

Basically, you need to create a pdf form.
Add a text field to your form.
There you can choose which font your want the text to appear in.
The trick is, when you export from InDesign, in the "Advanced Tab" — set "Subset fonts when percentage…" to 0%, so the whole font embeds.'
I believe there's an option in Acrobat to embed the font as well, but I'm not recalling what it it.
But that will ensure the font appears correctly.

  • Fully embedding fonts in PDF

    Hi,
I had a piece of information but I can't seem to find it anymore so I have to ask ...
This is about understanding limitations of fully embedding fonts in a PDF (from Indesign Server). Actually it's about one limitation in particular. I know fonts with licensing issues or fonts that are marked "embedded not allowed" will not be embedded. Also, there is a threshold that I need to set.
So, I recall reading somewhere that Indesign will not fully embed "standard" fonts. Is that correct and what is this standard fonts category?
Oh, reading through some posts, I noticed lots of people and experts ask why does one need fully embedded fonts. That's a good question and I don't know the root reason but in my case it seems that some regulatory agencies (in the life sciences/pharma domain) require PDFs with fully embedded fonts.
    Many thanks
    Cristian

    On behalf of Adobe:
    (1)     For both InDesign “PDF export” (including InDesign Server) and Illustrator “save as PDF” functions, most but not all of the .joboptions file font embedding options are totally and utterly ignored. The options that are ignored are the Embed all fonts, Embed OpenType fonts, Always embed, and Never embed. Those options are observed by Distiller and the PDFMaker components of Acrobat.
    (2)     These applications will attempt to embed all fonts referenced by the document, regardless of the settings of the .joboptions file. The only reason why a font would not be embedded in a PDF file would be if (a) the font was unavailable (i.e., not installed on the system) or (b) the font's embedding permissions do not permit embedding for at least preview and print privileges. Thus, if you use the so-called Standard .joboptions (strongly not recommended for any graphic arts purposes), even the base 14 fonts (four faces each of Helvetica, Times, and Courier along with Symbol and ITC Zapf Dingbats will be embedded if your document references them.
    (3)     The subset threshold value of 0 (zero) may effectively cause all the glyphs of a font to be embedded in some, but not all cases. This will work for many if not most Type 1 fonts and some smaller TrueType and OpenType CFF fonts. Note that embedding all glyphs in a font is not the same as embedding a full font. For OpenType and TrueType fonts, InDesign and Illustrator never embed all the tables of the font. Such unembedded tables include those used for pair kerning, advanced OpenType features (such as ligatures, alternate representations, contextual alternates, small caps, old style figures, etc.), and extended metrics.
    (4)     There are plenty of bubbameissas out there with regards to the benefits or liabilities of either fully embedding or subset embedding fonts. What is true is that: (a) Acrobat never uses the embedded font for text editing - you must have the font installed on the system in order to do such edits. (b) Subset embedding or not is totally irrelevant to what a RIP does when rendering text, either for PostScript or direct PDF RIPs. Neither subset or full embedding is any more reliable than the other and the specifications of PostScript and PDF do not permit the RIP to replace the embedded font with a font with a similar name - urban legend notwithstanding!!!! (c) Third party plug-ins to Acrobat or applications that claim to allow you to edit PDF files with embedded fonts may be illegally letting you do so if the embedding permissions do not permit embedding for editable embedding or installable embedding - most fonts do not provide such embedding permissions and since the fonts are missing metric information, such editing may be somewhat lacking in quality or features.
    (5)     In fact some very non-tech-savvy organizations have posted requirements for full embedding of fonts in submitted PDF files (I have personally seen one such requirement by some international bureaucracy). They can post such bone-headed requirements based on limited understanding of PDF and PDF workflows, but that doesn't mean that anybody actually provides such PDF files. If in fact you run into such requirements, I would appreciate it if references to same can be forwarded to my attention by private message on these forums.

  • Embedded fonts in PDF

    Hello
we need to embed our own font "Frutiger" in our AdobeForms.
I installed fonts (TTF) in the Adobe Directory already and
edited XFA.XCI File already but Fonts are not embedded.
I attached a screenshot of the File and the TTF Font.
Any ideas why this is not working ?
    BR,
    Sebastian

    Dear Sebastian,
I checked your PS fonts from folder "Frutiger Next PC PS Single",
    please see my steps below:
    1) I copied this two folders from "Frutiger Next PC PS Single",
"Condensed" and "Standard" to ADS server folder /usr/sap/
<SID>/SYS/global/AdobeDocumentServices/FontManagerService/fonts/customerMore information you can find in manual:

    2) I edited a custom_xfa.xci file (can be a xfa.xci file).
More information in SAP Note: 1815722 - How to embed specific font on
    PDF output
    3) I created PDF and fonts Frutiger are embedded.
Please check my PDF attached "sample.pdf". You can find there also my
    custom_xfa.xci file.
    Your question:
Where to find in TTF and PS (*.afm,*.inf, *.pfb) the font name to be
    noted in xfa.xci?
Please look at SAP Note 1815722 - How to embed specific font on PDF
output -> Solution -> 1. Find out correct font name
If issue still exist please send to us second time an ADS font trace
information (SAP Note 1717189) and please create a PDF (print preview)
with additional info (template, data, ...) by the note 944221 chapter
    "Generated PDF with additional information".
    1. Call the Form Builder (transaction SFP).
    2. Choose "Utilities -> Settings".
    3. In the dialog box, choose the option "Very Detailed Trace" for
    "Trace Level" under "Runtime Information".
After that generate the PDF and send to us.

        Thanks,
Sorry, the option CJK_USE_BOLD_IT does not exist in report RSTXPDF3 when I run this report.
I found only CJK_SMALL_FONT such as u2018CJK*u2019 in my system.
Is there a way to add CJK_USE_BOLD_IT?
When I check RSTXPDF3,I found all the options are hard copy in RSTXPDF3 list by Constants.

  • How remove embedded font from PDF

When I print to PDF on Mac OS 10.6.8 by default embed fonts to PDF-file. It add unnecessary bites to PDF-file (the file is huge size).
How to remove this option of fonts embedding? Or how remove embedded font from PDF file?

After opening dozens and dozens of linked files,I finally found the offending "empty line of text" in one of the AI files I placed in the INDD file. Open > Select All.... then check the font panel. With mixed fonts, it was empty, but if everything was the correct font, it was filled in. It was just one AI file.
