Embedding .WMV and other Windows Files on Wiki

Hi everyone. We just moved to cross platform MacBooks for the project I manage. Teachers are creating videos and other things in Photoshop and Premiere on the Windows side. Obviously they can attach the video as an attachment, but is there any way to embed the videos in Snow Leopard Wiki Pages like you can do with Quicktime? Any plug ins or anything like that?
Thanks!

See if [messageID=9232112|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9232112] and [messageID=11560901|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11560901 ] helps with your quest, and see page 33ff in the [Wiki Deployment manual|http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/WikiDeploymentv10.6.pdf] for the steps and for the formats.
Files using the Microsoft Windows-specific WMV format will very likely need to be converted, and media format conversion tools are available.

• Just got a new Macbook Air. How can I get quicktime to play wmv and other video formats?

I just purchased a new Macbook Air. I have loaded quicktime, but it doesn't play all formats such as wmv and others. What is the best way to accomplish this?

Download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac and operating system, of:
RealPlayer SP for Mac from:
http://www.real.com/realplayer/mac
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac-wmv/overview.htm (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
Perian from http://perian.org/
You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs. In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them), particularly any DivX extension to Safari. However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/en/software/mac
The latest version of Adobe FlashPlayer can be obtained from here:
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFl ash
You can check here what version of Flash player you actually have installed:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/155/tn_15507.html
You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.
You should first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/909/cpsid_90906.html
and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.

• Is there a way to designate automatically returning to your homepage when closing other windows/files/tabs etc.? Could do it on the Mini, but haven't found magic spell for new iMac. Thanks!

Is there a way to automatically return to homepage after closing other windows/files/tabs etc.? Was able to do this on Mini, but have been unable to find setting to do it on new iMac. Thanks in advance!

If you were able to do it on the Mini you should be able to on an iMac, they use the same versions of OS X. You just have to recall how you set it up.

• Activation of links to embedded ".kmz" and "Animated GIF" files.

I recently upgraded from Adobe Acrobat Pro X to Adobe Acrobat Pro XI and noticed a slight difference on how documents linked in an Adobe Acrobat File are activated for display.
I have placed files I want to display in my Adobe Acrobat file as file attachments. I then link to those files, so that the user can click on an icon area within the document and open the file in a new window.
After a little effort, I was able to make the correct links to .pdf file attachments, but ran into problems linking to and displaying files that utilize external applications to view the file. If I was able to convert this file to a .pdf file, I could open it with no problem.
However, I am having trouble linking the following file types for display from file attachments already embedded in the Adobe Acrobat document file.
They are...Portable Network Graphic (PNG), Animated Graphic Interchange Format (GIF), and Keyhole Mark-up Language - Zipped (.KMZ) and Microsoft Word (PPT) files.
The .pdf file was originally convered from a Microsoft Word file in which all of the links worked fine.
I thought I had the problem solved in Adobe Acrobat Pro X, but cannot seem to open the same files iin Adobe Acrobat Pro XI.
Would appreciate some guidance.

Thank you for your offer, I do appreciae it. But I think the better question to ask at this point is : What is the last version of Photoshop Elements that supports editing animated gif files. This is too important to me to lose this ability and after checking further I see CS4 is out of my price and needed features range. I would rather hang on to my old laptop to manipulate photos than lose the ability to edit my .gif files.
Can anybody help with this question?

• Convert DVD and other video files for playback on iPhone, iPod, PSP, etc.

So, how are your holidays going? Or, if you're reading this on the weekend, how'd they go? Watching various sorts of DVD movies and videos is a better idea for a pastime during your free time. To make your holiday be more colorful with movies, I prefer to recommend an application to help you guys deal with different kinds of video resources, no matter the DVD files or footages shot by camcorders, or videos in formats of FLV, AVI, MKV, etc., in a word, the converted videos will be supported by whatever portable devices you have, including PSP, iPod Classic, iPod Touch, iPod Nano, iPhone (3G), iPhone, Zune, Zune 2, Blackberry, Nokia, Creative Zen, Sony Walkman, iRiver PMP, Archos, PS3, Apple TV, Xbox, iPAQ, Pocket PC, Mobile Phone, etc. The software is Pavtube Video DVD Converter Ultimate, which combines DVD ripper and Video Converter together, and enables you to edit and convert any DVD, video, audio and image files to other popular formats including MP4, 3GP, FLV, MPEG-4, AVI, MPG, MOV, 3G2, VOB, FLAC, MKA, OGG, WAV, AC3, M4A with super fast conversion speed and excellent image and sound quality.
The detailed user guide will be shown in the following part:
Step 1: Add video and DVD file
You are allowed to add videos to this program via clicking "Add Video", and add DVD files to it via clicking "Load DVD". DVD files can be loaded in three ways: "Load DVD ROM", "Load DVD Folder", and "Load ISO/IFO".
Step 2: Select output format and set destination folder
Videos and DVD files can be added to this program at the same time, after that, you can click the drop-down list of "Format" to select an output format for your portable devices. The format profile provides you with formats for iPod, iPhone, PSP, PS3, BlackBerry, etc. Meanwhile, you can click the folder icon at the end of "Output" to decide where to save the output files. Moreover, if you want to combine multiple files to be a single file, you can tick "Merge into one file".
Step 3: Set advanced settings
If you have the needs of adjusting video and audio parameters to make good control of the output file quality and size, you can click "Settings" button to do it, and all the options like codec, aspect ratio, bit rate, frame rate, audio channel, etc. are changeable on the following window.
Step 4: Start conversion
As soon as the above steps are finished, you can click "Convert" button to start conversion, the following ripping window will show you clearly about all the conversion info. After finished, you are able to find out the output files via clicking "Open" button.

We're not supposed to talk about DVD conversion according to the terms of service ...
So I'll assume these VOB files are from your HOME MOVIE DVDs you burned yourself and suggest the Videora iPod Classic Video Converter.
http://www.videora.com/
It's a really nice program that converts not only your HOME MOVIE DVD VOB files, but AVI, MPEG, and others. You can set the CPU usage from high to low with five settings, it has a queue which you can add multiple files to, and it will minimize to the taskbar for compact convenience. There are other Windows programs that do much the same, but I prefer Videora. Oh ... and it's freeware!!

• Mac not reading Disc full of .VOB and other DVD files

Hi all! I wasn't sure where to put this so here I am.
I'm currently transferring old VHS cassettes to DVD-R using the Sony RDR VX530. The disc plays in the Sony. I finalize it and take all appropriate steps. When I insert the DVD-R into my MacBook, it says "Burnable Disc" and shows no files. None at all. I took the disc to my sister's house and put the disc in her Windows laptop and ::BAM:: all the files were there and playable on the windows machine. What gives? I can put other dvds in the drive and see the Video_TS and Audio_TS files, but not the ones I record on this machine. The machine only has two recording options, VR and Video, both of which have to be finalized. Is there a solution besides me having to go borrow a windows laptop to connect to the network so I can pull the .vob files onto my mac?

It sounds to me like you didn't finalize your DVD!
Most DVD recorders and DVD cameras don't finalize the DVD until you specifically tell them to. This finishes writing things like file system information on to the disk but it also makes it so that more data cannot be written to the disk in the future. (This is why it doesn't do it until you tell it to).
Some Windows computers have software that allows them to read disks that haven't been finalized yet. I actually think its a feature of Vista and 7 but I'm not sure about that. Either way, look in your DVD recorder's manual about finalizing the disk to get it to work on your Mac.

-Ryan

• Differences between 10G intallations for vista and other windows systems

I need Informations about how the installationfiles for vista are differing from the files to install oracle on other windows systems.
And why can't i simply install Oracle Database 10g release 2 (10.2) for Microsoft Windows on a Windows Vista System.

Because Microsoft has changed the API with Vista - the system calls that programs such as Oracle (and Symantec, Word Perfect, and so on) use to performs their operations.
It is a strange thing indeed that things stop working when a program (such as Oracle) asks "fetch me data from disk" and the operating system says "fetch has been changed to get and I no longer respond to fetch"
Also because Microsoft has changed the security model, and requests made by Oracle are now denied due to insufficient, or differences in, security.
An analogy - you have a device with a plug to use in North America. Why can you not simply plug it in to the wall socket in other countries?
The information you need should probably come from Microsoft, not Oracle.

• Jquery.js and other .js file includes problem

Hello!
I have a problem with external .js files.
If I link them in the
field at the page properties section, nothing happens.
I saw that Muse put it's .js files at the end of the
tag. If I open the html file, with notepad, and put my includes manually right after the Muse's section my codes are working, but there are error messages in the browser.
So if my code is above the generated JS Includes they won't work, but after them they are working, but with error message. And If I change something on the site, I have to manually put them there again. That wouldn't be nice.
How can I Include jquery to make my other .js files, and .css work?
Hope somebody can help.
Regards,
Tom

Just figured out.
When activated, the hidden feature inserts into web.config the following:
<location path="_layouts">
<system.web>
<authorization>
<deny users="?" />
</authorization>
</system.web>
</location>
The fix:
Keep the tag inserted, then, add the following
<location path="_layouts/1046/core.js">
<system.web>
<authorization>
<allow users="?" />
</authorization>
</system.web>
</location>
<location path="_layouts/1046/search.js">
<system.web>
<authorization>
<allow users="?" />
</authorization>
</system.web>
</location>
<location path="_layouts/1046/NON_IE.JS">
<system.web>
<authorization>
<allow users="?" />
</authorization>
</system.web>
</location>
<location path="_layouts/1046/init.js">
<system.web>
<authorization>
<allow users="?" />
</authorization>
</system.web>
</location>
Remember to change de "1046" to your specific language.
Hope it helps you as much as it helped me

• How do I uninstall Firefox and other related files from a Mac laptop computer?

I want to remove Firefox and other files that may not be removed from my Mac laptop computer. How do I do this?

Firefox also stores personal data in the Firefox profile folder in two locations (main profile and cache files, see about:cache).
*/Users/<user>/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/<profile>/
*/Users/<user>/Library/Caches/Firefox/Profiles/<profile>/Cache
*http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
In Mac OS X v10.7 and later, the ~/Library folder is a hidden folder.

• [BI4] CFS Files and other temp file

Dear All,
I'm checking the size of FRS and its is about 17 GB. In order to decrease the size of FRS I changed up the level of indexing to Platform
Metadata rather than Full Content so that a lot of CFS files are going to be deleted. There is any other way in order to delete the CFS
files inside the FRS.Beside.
P.S.
"Are there any other temp files inside the FRS that needs to be deleted ?"
Best Regards,
MJ

17 GB is not a very big size for FRS. FRS includes only the objects in your repository. There will not be any temp files.
You can also run Reposcan to delete any orphan folders and files.

• How to play .wma and other Windows Media Player-format files/videos on Mac?

Hi again,
I will be asking stupid questions as I'm a newbie to Mac, so please bear with me. There are some video format that QuickTime player doesn't play e.g. .wma files. I tried a couple of times to download Windows Media Player for Mac but it doesn't install on my Mac! Do I require a software similar to Zipfile or does Mac has it all build in?
PS - What is the coequal of "delete" button here in Mac (keyboard)?

Download and install Flip4Mac - VersionTracker or MacUpdate - to play Windows Media files via Quicktime. Also get Perian to provide additional codecs for other video formats.
The Delete key is on the keyboard next to the "=" key.

• Converting WMV and non apple files on the net

I'm very new to apple, and I love my new machine, however, I cannot open any microsoft based files eg. wmv files on the internet and I thought that the conversion would be much simpler. I called tec support and was directed to flip4mac.com, however I couldn't install the wmv converter onto the macbook, has anyone figured this out??
Please Help
Drew

Flip4mac.com will have a Universal version of their plugin soon. It is the best option as it will run natively on the Intel chip.
You might be able to find an old version of Windows Media Player for the Mac but it is being discontinued.

• How do you change the default location of the library xml and other related files?

After the most recent software update of iTunes for Windows, the new software resorts to going to a folder on my hard drive for the files that determine your library:
\Users\username\Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl
\Users\username\Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.xml
My itl and xlm files are located at on an exgternal network connected drive in a iTunes\ folder.
Asa temporary solution I replated and copied my itl and xml files into the C drive folders but I would like to modifiy the defualt settings in the solftware?
Is that possible?

This question should not be in the "ITunes for Mac" dicusiosn but in Itunes for PC.
Unrelated to this quesiton but related to the software update, I noticed that not all settings for my albums's artwork came over. I would prefer avoiding going into each album to modify album art info.... >:-(

• Library and other windows refusing to show up

Hi,
I'm currently running Motion 3 and when I want to start from scratch it goes through the normal setup but then the main window doesn't appear so I would have to goto file - New Project and it will then appear, but the library browser and File browser doesn't show up at all, I've pressed the button at the top of the window and even went to the Window drop down but it still will not show up. It used to work but now it doesn't. Could someone please help me?
Thanks
Leon

Could be a preferences file problem - to quote Mark Spencer:
You need to delete the preferences file
1) Quit Motion.
2) Navigate to User/Library/Preferences.
3) Locate com.apple.motion.plist and delete

• What is the best way to install OSX and other computer files?

Hi,
Long story short my Mac OSX got rewritten over with Windows XP so have to do a fresh install. So do I do the fresh install first and then transfer over all the stuff from my sister's computer to mine via Firewire?
You know when you first get a Mac it says do you want to transfer your files from another computer, well that is what I want to do since my sister's computer has a lot of what I used on my computer. So do I do a fresh install first and then is there an option to transfer over all her stuff after the fresh install? Or do I have to manually grab what I can off her computer?
Basically just want to know which comes first.
S.

I think it's offered as an option at some point during the installation. But you can always start the Migration Assistant at any later point (it's located in Applications/Utilities) - that's the same application.
That's what I did, actually. I did a clean install first and only after everything was up and running did I hook up my old G4 and transferred things over with the help of the Migration Assitant.
