Emergency booting, Emergency booting

Stuck cd in superdrive does not allow booting. Is there a way to boot the imac? Snow leopard. I mac 2009.

Hold down the option key when powering on the computer (hold power to turn it off first) when a row of icons appears, keep pressing the eject key on a built in or wired keyboard.
BTW, you already have a thread going on your issue, why are you posting twice?

  • [SOLVED] Suddenly booting in emergency mode, why?

    Hi,
i already searched here and with google and I could find problems regarding the emergency mode but none fitting to mine
I really dont know what I shall do now.
I just rebooted because my wifi was connected but i had no internet connection although it was there on other devices. after reboot it showed emergency mode like in the pictures below.
plus i posted the error parts of the journal output.
can someone help me with that?
    thank you very much

But how can I prevent this? I guess it was because my notebook booted into windows and because II didn't want it to boot I just restarted while booting. not the gentle way but usually I had no problems with that. I mean I won't do that again now but can I maybe fix something in my fstab?
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nodev,nosuid 0 0
    # /dev/sdb8 UUID=3699c7ac-8e3e-42c6-b215-19965446990e
    LABEL=arch / ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 2
    # /dev/sdb7 UUID=570f4617-353e-4631-9825-2bc569f35af0
    LABEL=swap none swap defaults 0 0
    LABEL=stuff /media/stuff ntfs defaults,rw 0 2
why is there a swap at all? When I installed arch I especially tried doing it without a swap drive because I have 16gb of ram, so I thought I don't need that?
but to be safe I should exchange all the labels with UUIDs right?
afterwards I will mark this thread as solved.
UUID's are generally safer because they won't change over time. I got mixed up with labels referring to "/dev/sdb8" or "arch", so your current definitions should be fine as long as you don't introduce a new drive labelled arch.
To get rid of mounting the swap partition, (This WILL disable hibernation) you can just prefix the swap line with a hash so it isn't parsed.
To allow skipping of the Windows partition if it's in HybridBoot, add "nofail" to the options region. E.G: LABEL=stuff /media/stuff ntfs defaults,rw,nofail 0 0
Last thing (Hopefully), the pass field, (the digit 2 in the "stuff" line) should be a zero, as fsck cannot scan NTFS as far as I know.

  • Systemd Emergency Mode on Boot

I am sorry if this is in the wrong forum section.
When I boot my Archlinux computer, I am taken to an "emergency mode" screen. It is clearly part of systemd, and I cannot start my regular graphical environment. I have been using Arch for a few months, and I have had minor systemd troubles but nothing as serious as this. I am currently in a Linux Mint Live CD so I can post this.
I researched the problem, and found that the systemd may have failed to mount critical drives. I looked at my /etc/fstab file, and it seems to be kind of wonky (my boot partition is after my root partition, UUIDs seem to be wrong). I do not know how to fix this emergency mode problem.
Please help; any help is appreciated.

By now, I didn't do something that solve the problem. Sorry by my side.
Idea's goal: try to login in a tty using rescue.target. And from there launch systemd's multi-user.target to see what fails. I don't know if it'll used for something (I'm saying something like "press all keys to see what's up").
For boot in rescue.target. You can use a kernel parameter:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sy … ent_target
or another way (if kernel parameter points to default.target): change symbolic link from default.target to rescue.target
    ln -sf /usr/lib/systemd/system/rescue.target /etc/systemd/system/default.target
If you get a login try to change current run level.
    Edit:
but, maybe it is the same that grub's fallback mode.
    emergency.target???

  • How to boot to emergency.target and have a functional USB keyboard?

I appending systemd.unit=emergency.target to my kernel line in GRUB while booting so I could manually do an e2fsck.  I was unable to enter my password; my USB keyboard was not activate.  Seems like systemd didn't load a module or something.  Thoughts?

ataraxia wrote:You don't have the udev hook, so none of the modules included by usbinput are actually getting loaded. Figure out the module your keyboard needs (probably just hid-generic) and add it to MODULES.
    Good observation.

Is there an emergency eject hole on the newer iMacs? I have a disk stuck in the drive and the computer won't boot. Need to get this disk out to load repair disk.

If you are getting nothing at all you should take it in for repairs.

  • Emergency time.. Mac wont boot using my new SSD

I recently aquired a new Crucial SSD and installed it in my Macbook late 2008. I had cloned it from origonal hard drive, and everything worked like a dream!
Tonight, i replaced my optical drive with my old HDD using the HDD optical drive Caddy. That all went relativley smooth, everything going back where it should, except one thing, i broke the four prong sub woofer plug, while spurging it out. This isnt my emergency though.
After everything was put back in its rightful place, and i powered up. My screen started flashing the folder with a question mark... so i powered off and booted pressing option key for Startup Disk. Now the problem came.
My new SSD was no longer anywhere to be seen! The only disk bootable was my old hard drive named 'Funks Brain' and a recovery disk.
I have rebooted a few times now, and i cannot seem to locate my SSD drive, which is installed in the origonal hard drive section of my computer!
Please help me. I am at a loss.

Trouble shooting hardware issues from a distance is iffy at the best of times. It is a process of elimination. My first thought would be to reinstall the SSD physically. Go through the whole process of installing the SSD once again. The idea here is something might have come loose. (Obviously the software installation on the SSD worked since you were able to boot from it.)
If that does not get you anywhere, I would reomve the SSD and put it an external enclosure and see if you can boot from it that way. That will tell you if the SSD suddenly decided to go belly up - doubtful, but worth checking.

  • Creating an Emergency Boot CD for tiger for use on a powerbook

Hi need to create the cd or dvd, i understand bootcd and carbon copy cloner work, but CCC does not work as i only have once hard drive, bootcd is incompatible with tiger so what do i use as i want to put diskwarrior on an emergency cd or dvd and teechtool any help please peeps would be good. many thanks or a image file would be nice so i can download that.

Both Techtool and Disk Warrior are available on bootable CD format. Contact their vendors to request the latest CD version if you bought their software.
Most importantly, you should first backup your data as my FAQ* explains. Utilities can help you get up and running quicker than recovery from backup, but they should be no substitute as errors requiring these utilities can frequently look identical to a dying hard drive, and there is really no way to tell the difference until it happens.

  • Boot camp emergency

I installed a second drive to use for boot camp. i selected that drive after creating the driver disc and inserted the WinXp OS cd. system goes to blank screen after a short flash of "setup is inspecting your system, black, not blue screen- pre installation") and hangs. no activity. i cannot get the cd out nor can i boot to OS X. any ideas?

To get the CD out try booting the system with the left button held down on a wired mouse.
Otherwise, to get back into Mac OS X hold down the option key while booting. Again use a wired keyboard. Hopefully you'll get into the startup manager to allow you to select a boot drive.

Absolutely a multi core processor can run a 32bit OS. It will just not take full advantage of the multiple cores.
I'd try an XP install and make sure you wipe all the partitions. Then stop the install and start over with whichever OS you want.

  • Emergency!!! boot camp made my macbook forget it was a mac

hello, I was using leopard, and tried to install windows, for some World in conflict, as I was partitioning the drive, i got the grey screen of death, telling me to reboot, I reboot to find all of my space was used in OS X, so i thought, "no problem none of the data on this is important, ill reformat and reinstall OS X" I got out my cd and pushed Option to choose the boot device, I was greeted with to options, my defunct leopard install, or a picture of a CD that said under it "Windows". I went "???" pulled the cd and looked at it, it was indeed a Leopard install disc, that came with my macbook, put it back in and thought, it was a quirk, then the same thing happened, I said,"lets just try booting from the disc" it brought me to a black screen with a blinking cursor, couldn't type anything or do anything outside of hard booting the computer,
    what should I DO?
im posting this from my Alienware desktop running...... vista....... sp1.....

isn't doing option and choseing the Cd as the boot device the same as just pushing "C"
Almost. "C" forces a DVD boot, Option allows a selection of bootable objects.
I wonder if you have some other hardware problem. Is your keyboard hardwired?
    You might try resetting NV-RAM
    Resetting PRAM:
    ■ Shut down your computer. Turn the computer back on and immediately hold down Command-Option-P-R, continuing to press until you hear the startup sound for the second time. This resets the computer’s parameter random-access memory (PRAM).
IMPORTANT: Resetting PRAM may change some system settings and preferences. Use System Preferences to restore your settings.
    ■ If resetting PRAM doesn’t solve the problem, reset non-volatile random access memory (NVRAM). When the “To continue booting ...” message appears, type “reset-nvram” and press Return. Then type “reset-all” and press Return

  • Bootable MacOSX 10.6 Snow Leopard emergency USB flash drive boot disk

I want to create a minimal recovery boot disk for SL. I've followed how-to's on creating one for 10.4 and 10.5, but so far it I couldn't get it to work with 10.6.
If you have successfully done this, or can point me to a pre-made image or how-to, it would be much appreciated.

    I found this article:
[2009 Live DVD, howto make a simple, working osx livedvd|http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=144128]
Here's the overview of the method presented there:
    How it works:
This method works because OSX has a disk image boot system in place to support its network boot system. IOHDIXController and kernel can take a path to disk image supplied to them, and mount it as /, via "imageboot", which recognizes a disk image as an attachable filesystem.
Further, Apple has setup a system to take a read-only disk image and attach a shadowfile to it, so that it is writeable. Intended to support a network boot system by making the user's session local and non-persistent, it is implemented in /etc/rc.netboot. Basically, vndevice (/usr/libexec/vndevice) attaches a shadow file to the dmg, and enables a copy-on-write strategy on that device--writes to the dmg are diverted to the temporary shadow file. This is much like what happens on a linux live dvd, albeit with Unionfs.
Normally the shadowfile is created on a local disk or network share, on either nfs or hfs. Under my method, the shadowfile is created on ramdisk formatted with hfs, and the system behaves exactly as if it were booted with netboot. The difference is that I specify that the dmg to boot from is local(file:///), and then manually start a customized rc script. The script behaves like rc.netboot, except i create a ramdisk and setup the shadowfile there instead of on a local disk. After that / is R/W and OS X boots normally into finder...and beyond.
    Got that?!

  • Freezing and wont boot! Emergency!

    Hello.
I have a quite big problem with mg Macbook pro. Its a 2010 mid, 15 inch. I have a normal harddisk, and not a SSD. The problem is that, about once an hour, all my programs/desktop freezes, and only the Mouse is working. And, either it Will turn of and shut Down, and boot with The Grey map with a White question Mark, or The Apple and The loading bar and load forever. Will a New disk Work out?
    Thanks for your help.
Ny exams Are soon, so really need help!

Possibly it's the hard drive or hard drive cable.
Unfortunately is could also be this:
computer crash, restarts - mountain lion.
    Where Linc says:
"Unfortunately, you have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs."
There was a recall on this model that has unfortunately ended.
