"Emergency Call" button- Is it ONLY for 9-1-1?

Is it possible to program your own emergency numbers in there? Are there any options?

Only for 911 (and perhaps 611 for your provider) in usa (other countries might have different ones) but no way to program in one for your use at this time...
theory is: if its your phone you can enter the passcode and dial any number... if its an emergency and your unable to dial etc then anyone could call 911 using your phone i believe its a fcc requirement in the usa to allow emergency calls(even on non activated phones)

I see this is an old thread and I happened to find it searching for information about the "Emergency Call" button. I just got my first iPhone, a 4S, on Friday. I have had an iPod Touch 4 and iPad 2 for a while but they lack the "Emergency Call" feature so my question never came up before. Is there a way to make ICE contacts available when the phone is locked under iOS 5? I can see this as a useful new feature to the "Contacts" app if there was a way to mark certain entries as "emergency contact" which would then make them, and only them, available for browsing and calling from the lock screen.

Iphone emergency call button gave me a shock

HI, today as i flipped the 'slide to unlock' to enter my pin. I accidentally hit the "emergency call" button left corner of the screen. This immediately gave me a shock I could feel in the top of me head. i do have a plastic casing on my iphone 4 and did not touch the antenna. What was this.
Will hitting this "emergency-call" button switch the iphone4 to a stronger signal tramsmission (in case of for emergency situations) maybe ?
Never felt this before yikes!

I also live an hr away from the Apple store, so its not the best thing to go there just to ask a question and find out what to do

Emergency call button dosnt work

I press the emergency call button on the lock screen, it dosnt work, i lock my phone then try again dosnt work, i spam the button still dosnt work, i think this is something apple should really try to fix because it does it on my friends phone aswell

Quick access to place an emergency call

With a regular mobile I can just dial an emergency number even if the phone is locked. How can I do this with an iPhone without going through the procedure of unlocking, select the phone app, select dial pad and then dial.

Are you getting a message about an unsupported SIM? It sounds like you had a phone that had been hacked to work on a network other than the one it was locked to and updating it has re-locked the phone to the original network.
Where exactly did you get the phone? What network are you on? If you did not purchase your phone directly from DU or from Etisalat (assuming you are using a carrier in the UAE) or from a carrier in the country where you purchased the phone or directly from Apple, then you got a gray market phone and it was most likely hacked to unlock it in the first place. Most of these gray market, hacked phones come from the US and were originally locked to AT&T.
Only the carrier the phone is locked to can authorize an unlock. If it is locked to AT&T, they will NOT authorize an unlock.
If any of my assumptions are incorrect, I apologize. We need more information, though to make a recommendation.

No signal for over an hour now. Emergency calls only!

Sounds like your phone has been re-locked to the carrier it was originally locked to, which is not O2. Where & from whom did you get this phone?

Enter the pass code you set up when locking the phone or the screen lock code already in use on the phone if you weren't required to set one up when you locked it.

I lost my iphone (4). I ended up buying a new 4S. NOW my original iphone has been found. I had had the 4 disabled and it can only be utilized now for emergency calls. How do I backup my original phone and get all the contacts?

In Regards to this, You possibly wont be able to get the contacts from the iPhone 4 unless there is a back up file on your computer.
The original phone would be disabled due to alot of attempts of the wrong passcode. If all your contacts are on the cloud at the moment, you would be able to just set the iPhone 4S up with iCloud on it then Turn On "Contacts".
This would be bring all the contacts down from your iCloud onto your 4S.
But you will only be able to merge your contacts with the cloud when your original iPhone either has been enabled or the passcode was entered.
If you have previously already had iCloud on that device and have contacts Turned on, you will be able to just enter the same Apple ID you used for iCLoud on your original phone and use it on your new one.
Your able to check what content your iCloud holds via www.icloud.com
If you are unable to get past the disabled screen, then unfortunately the device will have to be put into recovery mode and then restored via iTunes NOTE: This will delete all data.

HT1338 I have unsuccessfully tried for a month to fix phone is disabled I have tried everything I have 2 iPhones with 2 separate phone numbers my tablet and 1st phone works perfectly this other phone is totally disabled only screen says for emergency call
