Emergency Services and infrequent use of Skype

As a member of a small remote fire brigade with no mobile coverage and unreliable landline phone, I established a Skype account with credit.  The idea is to have the ability to call from a laptop via satellite Internet access in an emergency when there are no phone services.  This is not a service that will be regularly used (hopefully) but remains dormant.  Having to re-activate the credit defeats the purpose as this is likely to be required at a time of emergency.  Is there a way for emergency services to be exempted from this rule?

The most important part is that for most countries we do not actually terminate calls to emergency numbers. So you might want to revisit your set up in general.
No back to your question about credit reactivation:
This process is instantaneous: As soon as you click the reactivation link on your Skype web account page you will be able to use it right away. We don't have the capability to exclude individual accounts from that credit deactivation, I'm afraid.

    I only use my MBA on occasional trips. What's better for the MBA and the battery? - power the MBA off leaving it connected to a power source or disconnect it from the power and charge it only when needed.

    Stupid question but how do you tell if one your cores has shut down? Activity monitor?
    My MBA has been great since I bought it 3 months ago, quiet and cool. Just uploaded to iPhoto then closed then a bit of browsing and it's suddenly boiling hot on the left side and the fans are at 6200. I am charging it right now but that's not happened before. I usually don't push it at all - just word processing, internet, photos.
    Also, I never have it directly on my lap (as Apple states) - I have it on a thin bread board so blocked vents can't be the problem.

  • High CPU and memory use on Skype 7.4

    Hello Skype Community,
    Since we have release Skype 7.4 for Windows desktop we have seen a small number of users reporting sometimes high CPU usage and memory consumption by the Skype app.
    We are aware of the issue and are working to identify the root causes and identify all the conditions (internal and external) leading to abnormal memory and processor usage. Thanks for your reports confirming our internal telemetry.

    For further investigation of high CPU issues- Download process manager from https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb896645.aspx- Open the filter window <filter><filter>- add the filter <processname> <is> <skype.exe>- close the filter window- clear events <ctrl-x>- start capturing if it is not capturing already with <file><capture events>- wait for about 10 seconds- stop capturing events <file> <capture events> You should have only a few 100 events, if you have more(even 10s of thousands)  you can find out under <tools> <any summary> what has taken a lot of time and post your findings in the thread for further info. I found the root cause for my high CPU problem by doing this:http://community.skype.com/t5/Windows-desktop-client/High-CPU-7-5-Solved/m-p/3992130

  • How do I use hotmail via Blackberry services and not via phone network so not using up my data?

    I have a new Blackberry 9360 and am having trouble with it. They said in the shop that I can access my yahoo mail without using up my 250mb of internet data, so can access it using the Blackberry services rather than the internet. I can't work out how to do this and can only seem to use the email through the internet where the messages come into my 'Messages' on the 'Home' screen, therefore I'm using up my data every time I open an email message when it comes in.
    Can anyone please help me as I'm wishing I could go back to Nokia at the mo!

    They gave me the impresssion in the shop that I could access my existing yahoo hotmail, send and receive messages on it for free via the BlackBerry services and not use up my data allowance and they didn't mean the Blackberry email which is a different thing. Have they misled me with this?

    I have an iPhone 4S with iOS 5.1.1. My "Location Services" is turned on and so is my "Cellular Data". My question is, could someone use my "Location Services" feature wirelessly and find out where I am at the moment? If not then why is the pruple arrow appearing next to my battery icon at the top bar all the time, except ofcourse when I turn this feature off or when I turn the wi-fi and the cellular data off. This is problem started on June 13. Since that day it comes and goes. What makes me think that someone is spying one me is that when I go to "Settings" then to "Location Services" a list will show with all the apps that might use this feature, I usually allow all my apps to use this feature and the thing is when an app is using this feature at the moment or at a past time a purple or a gray arrow appears next to that app. It is not appearing next to any app and still there is a pruple arrow in the top bar. Please help I am afraid someone is spying on me.

    I found out what was using my Location Services. I went to "System Services" in "Location Services" and there were six system services that use location service. One of them is "Setting Time Zone" and that what was using the location services and still using. I just don't why now it is using it the whole time. Anyway I just wanted to let you know.     Where are you and where did you get the phone.  This sounds like a classic symptom of someone who bought an iPhone that originated in the U.S. which was then hacked so it would run on a carrier network other than AT&T... Then, when updating the phone, it becare re-locked to AT&T.
    If that's what happened, you now own a paperweight. AT&T will NOT unlock them for any reason.
    If this isn't the case, please clarify where you are, what carrier you have and where you got the phone so we can begin troubleshooting.

    I was having syncing issues with my iPhone (an original) and ultimately took the step to restore the factory default settings in an attempt to start over from fresh...iTunes 'sees' the iPhone device and seems to go through all the requisite restore, load, verify steps, but I can't get the iPhone to load the main menu. I continue to get a window that shows a USB Cable pointing to iTunes...I have had 800 call support technicians and genius bar techs look at the problem without result.

    If you experience difficulty reaching Skype Customer Service, try again using a different web browser and choosing a different path through the various drop-down menu options presented. Also, look to approve a pop-up dialogue box which would connect you to start an instant message chat with a customer service agent. If you have pop-ups blocked in your browser settings, this will also impede reaching an agent.

    Find my Phone requires a data connection. If cellular data is turned off, it will be pretty much useless unless you are constantly connected to WiFi, which of course you won't be. Same with Skype, data connection required, so will work when connected to WiFi. Unlees the mapping data is stored locally on your phone, GPS will be useless, as the built in Maps app requires a data connection as none of the data is stored on your phone.

    Not sure what you are asking here.  The AirPort Extreme is only going to be as fast as the Internet connection that it receives.....which is 75/75. It cannot take a 75/75 connection and make it go any faster.
    If you locate the AirPort Extreme in an area where you need more wireless signal coverage, the AirPort Extreme would deliver 75/75 in that area.  But, keep in mind that the AirPort Extreme must connect to the FIOS router using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection.
    If you are asking if the AirPort Extreme can wirelessly connect to the FIOS modem router, and extend the FIOS wireless network, the AirPort Extreme would not be compatible with a FIOS product for that purpose.
