Emergency time.. Mac wont boot using my new SSD

I recently aquired a new Crucial SSD and installed it in my Macbook late 2008. I had cloned it from origonal hard drive, and everything worked like a dream!
Tonight, i replaced my optical drive with my old HDD using the HDD optical drive Caddy. That all went relativley smooth, everything going back where it should, except one thing, i broke the four prong sub woofer plug, while spurging it out. This isnt my emergency though.
After everything was put back in its rightful place, and i powered up. My screen started flashing the folder with a question mark... so i powered off and booted pressing option key for Startup Disk. Now the problem came.
My new SSD was no longer anywhere to be seen! The only disk bootable was my old hard drive named 'Funks Brain' and a recovery disk.
I have rebooted a few times now, and i cannot seem to locate my SSD drive, which is installed in the origonal hard drive section of my computer!
Please help me. I am at a loss.

Trouble shooting hardware issues from a distance is iffy at the best of times. It is a process of elimination. My first thought would be to reinstall the SSD physically. Go through the whole process of installing the SSD once again. The idea here is something might have come loose. (Obviously the software installation on the SSD worked since you were able to boot from it.)
If that does not get you anywhere, I would reomve the SSD and put it an external enclosure and see if you can boot from it that way. That will tell you if the SSD suddenly decided to go belly up - doubtful, but worth checking.

  • My late 2012 mac mini boots slow with new ssd drive

So here is the situation.  I purchased a 128gb ssd drive, installed it a usb enclosure, formatted it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), cloned it with carbon copy cloner 3,   used the option key during boot up and selected the ssd drive and it booted my mac mini and it functioned perfectly.  I than tested it for dozens of reboots and it worked fine.  I then took apart my mac mini and removed the original hard drive and installed the new ssd drive.  When I boot to the ssd drive it still takes 47 to 53 seconds just like the old drive.  Aren't ssd drives supposed to be a lot faster?
My solution or tip is as follows; The reason it takes so long to boot is because the mac mini doesn't know you replaced the old drive and it is looking for it during the boot process.  Finally it can't find the drive so it boots to the ssd drive.  All you have to do to correct this is click on "system preferences", select and click on "startup disk" and select your ssd drive and click on "restart".  After these steps your mac mini will now boot in about 17 seconds.  Issues solved.

Yes, my solution fixed the issue.  I went from a 47 to 53 second boot time to a 17 second boot time.  The ssd drive is significantly faster than the original drive that came with my late 2012 mac-mini.   This is my first post and I wasn't sure how to post this as a tip.  I have another tip regarding usb 3.0 hubs.

My old mac was requested to upgrade Firefox to 14.0.1. After the sucessfully installation, I received a message saying my old Mac couldn't use the new Firefox and Safari crashes. I have NO browser now! Any help would be appreciated.

Hmmm...  So you upgraded Firefox and now neither Firefox or Safari will work?  Very weird.  I have no idea what might have gone wrong.  That said, when things start acting wierd, I always try a bit of maintenance first.  About 95% of the time, I luck out and it works.
I use the free program Onyx.  I run all the clean up routines.  Then I boot to the recovery partition (Lion) or the OS X Install Disc and repair permissions and verify/repair the hard disk.
    Hope this helps.

    Hi there Peter,
Not cheap anyway you look at it sorry, professional Data Recovery being the most expensive.
Unfortunately, Disk Utility can't fix all that much, and the only other Apple Options are erasing the HD, or installing OSX to a second drive, then using Migration Assistant to move stuff over to the new HD.
If Disk Utility or fsck should fail to repair it, your best bet is DiskWarrior from Alsoft, you'll need the CD to boot from if you don't have another boot drive...

This one would require another HD with plenty of space to recover to.
You should use another Boot Disk or other Mac with this one in Target mode to do the recovery.
They have a free demo to see what it could recover.

  • HT1338 Time Machine wont boot!

Time Machine wont boot although it still is backing up and works in the preferences. How can I fix this? Any ideas?

Please try each of the steps below that you haven't already taken.
    Step 1
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Time Machine
and make sure that at least one backup destination is selected and available.
    Step 2
If you're entering Time Machine from the Finder, make sure no Finder windows are open in other Desktop spaces in Mission Control. You must enter from a window open in the current space.
    Step 3
If you're backing up to an external hard drive attached to your Mac, open the backup volume in the Finder. You should see a folder with the name "Backups.backupdb". If you instead see a file with a name ending in "sparsebundle," the backup was created over a network. You have to mount the backup volume manually when you want to restore from it by double-clicking the sparsebundle file.
    Step 4
Select the "Backups.backupdb" folder and open the Info dialog. Either "staff" or "everyone" should have Read onlyaccess. If not, click the lock icon to unlock the access settings and make the necessary change. If you're not sure how to do that, consult the built-in help or ask.
    Step 5
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V) and press return.
A folder will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the folder open for now.
Relaunch the Finder by selecting  ▹ Force Quit from the menu bar, then selecting Finder and pressing return. Your Finder settings will be lost.
Try again to enter Time Machine. If you still can't, put back the file you moved to the Desktop, replacing the newer one that will have been created in its place.
Otherwise, close the folder you opened and delete the file you moved to the Desktop. Recreate your Finder preferences.
    Step 6
Do as in Step 5, but with this line:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
This time you may be prompted for your administrator password. Reboot, recreate your settings in the Time Machine preference pane, and run a backup to test.
    Step 7
Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the backup drive in the pane on the left (not any of the volume icons below it.) At the bottom of the window, you should see this:
Partition Map Scheme : GUID Partition Table
If the partition scheme is anything else, the drive has to be repartitioned (with the loss of all data.)
    Step 8
Skip this step if you're backing up to a network device, such as a Time Capsule.
Boot in safe mode. Try again to enter Time Machine.
Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
    Step 9
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Try again to enter Time Machine. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

I have a MAC Pro from 2011 currently running MAC OS 10.9.5.  This weekend I cloned the MAC HD drive to a new SSD drive for improved performance.  The clone was completed successfully with no errors.  After the clone completed I successfully restarted my system using the SSD as the boot device.  I then successfully tested all of my products, including Photoshop CS6 and all of its plug-ins.  I successfully tested the key features that I frequently use.  Today while attempting to launch Photoshop CS6 a message is being displayed indicating that a scratch disk cannot be found.  All drives are available on the system via the Finder and Disk Utility.  I can access all drives including the old MAC HD which is no longer the boot device.  I've even attempted to launch Photoshop from the old device yet the same error persist.  Is there a way to review/edit/change Photoshop preferences if Photoshop doesn't launch?  I've even restarted my system several times to see if that would resolve the issues.  Does anyone have any recommendations for this issue?  Have you previously address this issue?
    Thank you Gregg Williams

  • Install Mac OS X on a new SSD

I am looking at getting an SSD installed on my iMac. If I get the SSD installed, it will have no OS it will be blank. How would I get Mac OS X back on the hard drive? If I were to purchase a hard drive inclosure and put my old hard drive in the enclosure, could I bootup from my old hard drive and install Mac OS X on the new SSD? Would that work?

If your comtpuer came with lion or moutnian lion when you install the new SSD drive make sure you boot into the internet recovery.
    Options + CMND + R
and when you do go into disk utiltyi adn partiotion the drive.
As GUID 1 partition formated mac os extended jorunaled.
Then when you close disk utility youll see and option to reinstall > choose reinstall and conenct tot he itnernet adn let it go.
If you put the external into and encloser your should be able to boot to it using the startup manager.
    Option while turningthe comptuer on.
If your lucky you might be able to use thast drive recovery Partition > May show up int he start up manger.but thats a iffy part

  • How do I install Yosemite on a 2nd HDD I have added and have the Mac Pro boot from the new HDD?

My MacPro's HD seems to be failing. None of the tests I run indicate that, but I get constant spinning balls and everything takes a long time. I bought a 2nd HDD and installed it in the 2nd bayou my Early 2009 Mac Pro. I formatted it and want to install Yosemite and have the Mac boot off the new drive. It is currently running OS X 10.9.5. When I go to update to Yosemite it begins to download. Will it give me the option of which drive to install on? Or will it just upgrade the original Mac's HD?

    A Samsung 850 EVO 128GB SSD $75 now and makes a huge improvement. But get the 250GB which is $99. 500GB $199
Wish you asked us first   Awesome prices and performance.
Output from Etrecheck is an easy "quick check" of what your system is carrying around and what baggage it has.
Move data to a 'data and media library" drive.
Use CCC to skip the user data folders except ~/Library and clone to SSD
And might want to save the installer .ESD package for use as clean installer and to be able to boot from.

  • Time Machine To Be Used On New Internal Hard Drive

    Hi
I recently bought a new 500GB internal hard drive, on which I have copied (not migrated) my files and applications to. I have used Time Machine on the old 120GB drive with a 1TB external hard drive. I have this drive partitioned such that only 320GB was dedicated to Time Machine and because I spent the last 6 months downloading files (mainly itunes music) onto my old internal drive, and copying it onto another part of the partition on the 1TB external, then updating Time Machine, I only have 135GB left in the Time Machine part of the partition.
I have not yet backed up my new internal onto Time Machine as I am worried about space.
I tried changing the sizes of the partitions in disk utility so I could put more space in Time Machine (I have 3 other partitions) by dragging the sizes of the other partitions to make them smaller. I received the error message "file system or repair failed."
Is there a way to make more space in the Time Machine partition?
Will a new back-up add all the files I have copied for a second time (they are now on different locations on the hard disk)?
Can I copy the folders of Time Machine back ups to another partition to free up space in order to use Time Machine from scratch with the new internal drive?
    What is the best solution?
    Thanks
    Steve

Do you mean you copied files into the TM partition, or a different partition on the same disk as your TM backups?
I mean I copied the files from my old internal drive onto my new drive - I haven't done anything with Time Machine yet.
I only have 135GB left in the Time Machine part of the partition.
How much of the 320 gb is used by TM backups and how much by the other files?
As far as I know all of the used space is TM backups, so 185 GB
Will a new back-up add all the files I have copied for a second time (they are now on different locations on the hard disk)?
    Yes.
Can I copy the folders of Time Machine back ups to another partition to free up space in order to use Time Machine from scratch with the new internal drive?
As khassani noted, you can't just copy them. SuperDuper! will do it, but so will the Restore tab of Disk Utility. But you must copy an entire partition to another entire partition, and select Erase Destination.
Roughly how much data have you put on the new drive?
How old is the oldest backup in TM?
I have put 140 GB on the new drive so far (60GB from the old drive, 45GB with files for Logic Studio, which I would be happy not to back up, and the rest with system files, library files, other new files and applications)
The oldest back up is October '08. I have been backing up manually about once a week if that makes a difference.
You may be able to let TM back-up the new drive, then manually delete the old backups of the items you moved, via the TM interface. See item 12 of the Frequently Asked Questions post at the top of this forum.
Thanks very much for all of your help. Please let me know if you can offer further advice based on my extra information here.

  • Help! my mac wont boot

    help! my mac wont boot

    Have you tried Safe Boot?
You also might reset PRAM and reset SMC.
Have you tried booting with the Recovery System? See its possibilities here.
From there you can make repairs to your primary startup partition.
Do you have a backup? If not, do you have an external drive large enough to back up your primary drive? It would be good to have one in case your drive needs repair or replacement.

  • Mac wont boot, stuck on white screen

    Hi
After doing a software update and restart, my iMac wont boot. It will chime on, Grey screen w/ apple logo, then flashes to a white screen with a larger loading dial. It will keep doing this over and over, never actually getting to the login screen.
Have done safe mode start-up, tried repairing disks, and reinstalling OSX, which it won't let me do.
Not a computer expert so wondering if there are any more things I can try before taking it into get repaired?
    Thanks ahead of time!

Try booting from the install disc. A quick search should pull up the precise method for your particular iMac. If this started happening after and update, then it is likely something corrupted in your system software that may be an easy fix.  Do you have an external backup drive you could boot from?
