Emoticons in Messages on Mavericks

I just upgraded from 10.8.x to Mavericks. One thing I noticed in Messages is emoticons are no longer translated to icons. For example, ":-)" stays text, not an icon. I did some poking around and found com.apple.messageshelper.MessageController for "automaticEmojiSubstitutionEnabledLegacy" to swap the emoticons out for Emoji icons in non-iMessage messages. The issue is, it Messages seems to replace the characters with the emoji unicode character, which means it usually shows up as a box for most receivers.
Any one know of a way to make the emoticons render as icons, without changing text, like in the past?

Hi,
It matters little if the connection is always On.
What I was trying to get across was the iMessages account gives off no indication it is On line  (your contacts can't tell you are On line) and shows no contact you have is On line until such time you try and send an iMessage.
The Messages Menu > Status reveals this drop down
It is the same as the Drop Down in a Buddy List
Which is the same as the Menu Bar Drop down if you are displaying the Menu Bar Icon for Messages.
As iMessages can send as if it were your iPhone Number or the Registered Apple ID or other linked email I do have a sort of fuzzy logic idea that might explain why the Avatar pic does not show sometimes.
The My Card in my Contacts app shows my iPhone Number and the Apple ID I use for iMessages.
As I have a second iPhone Messages has tries to add that iPhone Number and Apple ID to the Same Send And Recieve spots despite being associated with a different Address Card.
I can see that - possibly - if the iPhone Number (or Apple ID) is not on the Address card then the Messages app may not pick up a pic for the avatar.
Now that you have set a Buddy pic this should now be used irrespective of the Address Card entry in the Contacts.app
Previously in iChat the Smileys were not actual pictures that were sent.
The App recognised the various keystroke combinations in the incoming and outgoing text and then displayed the correct smiley at your end. (if you had ther "Show Smileys" enabled)
In fact if you and your Buddy had the same Add-on Smiley Pack you could extend the range of smileys.
(Faulty smiley packs led to the discovery of the way to reinstall iChat 2)
The current Messages 8.0 versions seems to automatically convert some keystrokes to the previous Smileys.
I am not sure how close these are the the Emoji ones.
However these are now converted before sending and are actual pics that are sent.
Some of  the Emoji icon pictures also seem to take up two characters worth of data.
However my suggestion that any given keystroke combo might not match the conversion table as it were still stands.

  • How do I get the old emoticons in Messages back?

I recently upgraded to Mavericks and hate the emoji emoticons in Messages.  How do I get the old emoticons back?

You can turn the Emoji off here:
    Edit->Substitutions->Text Replacement->Emoji
Apple is using the Emoji as their standard now. The old emoticons are gone.

  • Messages in Mavericks:  How do we invoke "iChat Theater?"

Has the "iChat Theater" feature been removed from Messages?  I can't find it anywhere.  We used to be able to drag in files (video, pictures, documents) to view them "live" with our videoconferencing partner, like so:
And now it appears that all we can do is send the file?
Has this feature been removed?  Why?  If not, how do we invoke it, in Messages on Mavericks?  I use it all the time!

I suggest each user have their own Apple ID, iCloud account and purchase apps and music individually.
But if you must share the one account use the Settings app to stop syncing Contacts.
Settings > iCloud > Turn off Contacts.

  • How to ENABLE detection of duplicate messages in Mavericks Mail?

    Hello,
There was a good discussion of how to disable detection of duplicate messages in Lion mail - https://discussions.apple.com/message/18265121#18265121
but unfortunately nothing seems to work to turn them ON in Mavericks.
In Lion or Mt. Lion I do see duplicate messages - but in Mavericks I do not - but I want to see if there are duplicates for a variety of reasons.
In the post referenced above none of the command line suggestions seem to make a difference. My mail perference settings are idential on each system, be it Lion, Mr. Lion or Mavericks. Settings as follows:
Please note 'include related messages' seems to make no difference either way.
Can anyone please tell me how to display duplicates in Mavericks. Thank you very much in advance.
    E.

As a quick update, the following command DOES in fact show the duplicates in the mail folder:
defaults write com.apple.mail AlwaysShowDuplicates -bool true
So, if there are two exact messages (one sent to me at [email protected] and one forwarded to that email address and sent to me at [email protected], BOTH will show up as separate messages.
But to be clear, what I want to see is a single message with the '1 Duplicate' indicated in the message header.
Any way to do that in Mavericks?
    Again, thanks in advance.

  • Mail Upgrade message in Mavericks won't go away

Have upgraded from 10.8 to 10.9 Mavericks on my Macbook Pro, everything pretty much went fine, except for a problem with Mail.
Everytime I open it, I get the below screenshot, saying "Welcome to Mail. To use the new features in Mail, your Mail messages need to be downloaded to this computer...."
If I click continue, I get a "bing" sound and then my Mail opens up, but I get the same message each time I open Mail.
    Annoying.

I don't get the message anymore by doing the following:
Try to repair disk permissions first.
If your mail is also on a server and provided that you have a backup of your rules, signatures, etc, you can try the following:
    go to ~/Library/Mail
Delete all contents of the Mail folder. Don't delete the Mail folder.
    Go to ~/Library/Preferences
    Delete the file com.apple.mail.plist
The above actions will delete all local mail and reset the app completely! If you don't have a backup of your mail don't follow these actions!

  • Messages in Mavericks Server 3.0.1 Not Working

I have set up Mavericks Server. Most things are working fine but messages, won't. When I sign into the server via the Messages app, it just says that the login is incorrect. I added the server account via System Preferences. I'm not sure what is wrong but a look in the logs shows me this:
connection to router closed Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds
I'm not sure what this means or if there is any way to fix this. I have port forwarded the ports for Jabber/XMPP that are on this site.

    Hello Elgringito,
    thank you for your replay.
I rebooted from the Maveriks server disk (during the day we use the ML server since it works with mo problems).
    I started Server 3.0.1 app
I entered Terminal and did the command you suggested: sudo serveradmin fullstatus vpn

  • Messages in Mavericks missing option to enable Smileys

I'm unable to substitue text emoticons sent by other users to me for real emoticons (pictures). In older version of Messages I was able to enable emoticons but now I cant find that option
Cant find this anywhere! View Menu > Messages > Show Smiley

Make sure Emoji has a check next to it. Voila, you should be good. Let me know if that works for you.

  • Sort messages in Mavericks Mail

    Hello,
I upgraded from Snow Leopard directly to Mavericks. With respect to the previous version of Mail, I find the following functions not easily accessed as before. In a work environment this means wasting more time to do the same thing.
    1) There is no possibility to quickly "sort" messages like before. Previously it was very quick to do it by selecting date, addressee, etc.
I can do this by selecting "Classic layout" but in that case I lose the side preview panel which I have now, and the old WideMail plugin doesn't work anymore.
    2) When you write a new message there is no "save draft" button anymore.
    3) When you make a search in Mail there is a lot of information coming out, which are not needed.
    Thanks

    Jean...hi
like you I am going from Snow Leopard to Mavericks.....a whole new world...Mail for me is the programme with the steepest learning curve .
can help you with this perhaps:
---sort: note above the inbox panel/window thare are sorting functions:
click the tiny arrow and for sorting options.
----also when searching, choose options from drop down.
---when switching to classic view: the preview panel is below, like it was before...
    ---save draft: cmd s
----check out the mail preference...Yes, I have spent so much time at work figuring out the new way. also youtube tutorials on Lion and maybe Mt. Lion give instructions on Mails new look.
good luck....i feel your pain, brother....

  • Help - Fail message during Mavericks upgrade!

Everything was perfectly fine with my MacBook, yes it was old but the hard drive wasn't failing. So I go to update to OS Mavericks, I did a Time Machine backup and then downloaded Mavericks. When I went to install it, it went through a good clip and then failed with this horrible message:
    http://teamcorcoran.smugmug.com/2014/Share/i-FPtJ63p/A
    Install failed.
OS X could not be installed on your computer.
The OS X could not be started because the disc Mac Hybrid is damaged and can't be repaired. After your computer restarts, back up your data, erase your disc and try installing again.
    Click to restart.
Then, when I did that and chose Restore from backup, it finds the full backup on my Time Capsule, but can't find the hard drive (Mac Hybrid) to install it back on the computer?!
Only notes - 1) I had just done a backup of some data so I had an external drive plugged in, but I've done that before on my iMac and didn't have a problem?
    2) the download stopped a couple times while trying to download, when I clicked "Retry" it would resume the download. Could that have messed it up?
Now I can't get back to my old system to do anything. Help!

More information - when I click on Mac Hybrid (my hard drive) and click First Aid, it only gives me Verify Disk. Click that and here are screenshots of screen. Sorry these are all so bad but having to take from my iPhone, obviously can't take on my computer!

Disk Utility stopped verifying "Mac Hybrid"
This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk.
    OK
Then "Repair Disk" button isn't available.

  • How can i use encoding message in Mavericks mail

i have to use when i send mail. On maverick it's gone.

OK I just precise that the mail is displayed in RTF mode and not in HTML mode
There is no "RTF". Mail is either HTML (=Rich Text) or Plain Text.
I have already selected in Prefs "display distant images in HTML message" but it seems not be efficient.
    You never see any graphics?

  • "Speak an announcement" an option for Messages in Mavericks?

    Hello,
I recently upgraded to Maverics, which  is great except for the fact that my Messages app no monger speacks to me when a message is recieved.  I often have much background noise and can often miss even the loudest notification sound, that's why I liked the Speak an announcement option that used to be available.  Is it still around in Mavericks and I'm just missing it somewhere?
    thanks.

    HI,
Messages > Preferences > General Section
Enable the Sound in the top section for Message Received (the only changeable sound Left)
At the bottom is the only place to enable Apple Script
    Chose the Speak one.
I am presuming this speaks the Message and may not be what you want.
All the others (alerts) from Mountain Lion and Messages 7  and earlier are gone.
Well actually the sounds are there and play (you have no choice in this)  but all the option about changing them, dock icon bouncing  and the Speakable bits that did the announcing thing for certain actions cannot be accessed.

  • Messages in Mavericks has no Buddy List?

Can anyone who updated to Mavericks check to see if you have a Buddy List window in your Messages app (fka iChat)? I don't, nor is there an option for Buddies List window under its Window menu, as normal. The only window that opens is the Messages window, which works fine. But there's no way to see who's online, ones Buddies, etc.
I'm attaching a screen shot of what I see.

I figured out my own issue: bypass the new Accounts offerings, and select Other... This allows you to create an AIM account, and this then reveals a Buddy List window.
