Empathy 3.0.2 Chat Windows

Hi All,
I'm having trouble getting Empathy 3.0.2 to behave in Gnome Shell.  Whenever I chat with someone, Empathy will open two chat windows per conversation, one of which isn't functional.  The non-functional one only displays messages from the other person.  While this doesn't really impair functionality, it does get slightly irritating, and would be great if a workaround was available.
I have all the latest system updates, and have installed all the telepathy packages.  I've looked around in Empathy's preference window with no success.  Any ideas?
Thanks.

Hm, well it sounds like it may very well be an issue with how GNOME Shell handles IM notifications. I have largely the same set up as you, but without any major issues. All I've done is install Empathy and GNOME 3 from the stable packages, as you have, and installed all the telepathy plugins. Also, the Empathy configuration files are fairly sparse on closer inspection, so there's nothing I can see as having an effect on the situation, although you could wipe .config/Empathy just for good measure to regenerate those files.
I haven't found any similar bugs, so it may be something to report on the GNOME bugzilla, and see if there is any output from empathy on the CLI that may give a hint as to why this is happening. Also, how do you launch the chat conversations? Through the Empathy window, or the Shell? When exactly does the second window appear?

  • Open Buddy List instead of Chat Window

I remember at least with iChat, when you clicked on the icon in the dock, you could have it open the Buddy List to pick a name to start a conversation. Now with Messages, everytime I click on the icon, it just takes me to a new chat window. I've looked around in the options and can't find a way to default to opening the Buddy List instead of a window, even if I move a particular chat account above iMessage in the Accounts window.
Any workarounds? If not, I'd like to see this make it to the feature request list.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
The Window Menu (once Messages in Launched) and the keystrokes listed remains the only place that this can be done.
The option to Chose any Window that is Open from the DOCK icon has gone  (Used mainly when the app was Not "front")
The other method of using the Menu bar icon drop down to get to individual buddy List also does not work as it does not list which Buddy list is "Front"  (you can opt to show or not Show the Bonjour Buddies (making Bonjour the "Front" Buddy list but it does not tell which is when the Bonjour one is not)
Like you I am somewhat "iChat Centric" about this.

  • Is there a way to open a chat window with lookout?

I know there is a windows-chat embeded in Windows but our IT department has it blocked in all the machines. So I created, using a run object, a wordpad window to chat remotelly with the operator of the system using VNC4.0. Problem is that as soon as a new lookout screen is open, wordpad goes behind lookout. This VNC does not have chat windows.
I have secured lookout with passwords, the operator can not get inside the computer when lookout is open. No menu bar, no task bar. Lookout shutdwon the computer by a button on screen connected to a run object. When computer boots up, lookout opens automatically becasue its icon is in the start up file. This way of blocking the access to inside the PC works great but once wordpad windows goes back, I don't see a way to make it visible again without breaking the security of Lookout.
It will be really handy to have sort of chat window that lookout can open and close by itself, without asking for the blessing of the IT department.
    Any ideas?
Note: I tried also the web  server ponting to a wordpad file previously saved in some place. The inconcvenience of this is that the Web object cannot be moved around to uncover buttons of lookout screens. It doen't work 100% fine either as a chat windows.
    Again: Any ideas?

    Create Comments:
Create an Access database.  Table: Notepad Fields: Username (Text), ComputerName(Text),TimeStamp(DateTime),Comment(Memo)
    Create TextObject called ChatComment.
    Create PushButton called MakeComment.
Create and SQLExec object. Connect to the database.
    SQL Query  "INSERT INTO Notepad (Username,ComputerName,TimeStamp,ChatComment) VALUE "'" & $system.Username & "', '" & $system.Computername & "'," & now() & ", '" & ChatComment & "')"
(This SQL query is just PSEUDO CODE, it is not complete!)
    Connect SQLExec.Execute=MakeComment (pushbutton).
     Read Comments (Most Recent 15):
Create DataTable object, set as ODBC and connect to database.
SQL Query: "SELECT TOP 15 * FROM Notepad ORDER BY DateTime ASC"
Set a timer object or pushbutton to DataTable.ExecuteSQL
The datatable should have fields like A (Username), B (Computername), C(TimeStamp), D (ChatComment)
    Make your displays.
This is all pseudo-code type. But that will get you close to what you want.

  • Buddy Pictures not showing in Messages Chat window

Is anyone else having the same problem with Messages in OS X Yosemite showing Buddy Pictures just fine in the Buddy List window but NOT in the actual chat window?
I have already gone to 'View' 'Show All Buddy Pictures in Conversations' and it doesn't change anything.
    Please help!

This option does not appear under the View menu. I found it at View - folder.
Thanks! That solves the old email issue. Now, how can I permanently turn off threading?

  • IChat 4 (Leopard) Chat Window Location always the same

Anytime I get an incoming chat or if I start one, the chat window always appears in the same (annoying) place. If I rearrange the window, it doesn't stay for the next time. I never had this problem with Leopard on other Macs, and I don't know how to go about "fixing" this annoying quirk. Any ideas? Thanks.

    Hi,
iChat windows follow two sets of rules depending on whether they are incoming of outgoing Chats.
    This applies to all forms.
Incoming chat invites are always in the same place.
Top Right for any Incoming Text chat.
    Slightly lower for Audio chats.
Video Chats are always top centre of the screen.
As you can have more than one Text chat going On subsequent Invites stack down and slightly right on each one until you get to the edge of the Screen and then start left of the first and continue (much like opening multiple Documents)
    Outgoing chats are simple.
It will always be in the place you left the last chat (if you dismissed the Window).
If you do not dismiss the window then subsequent windows do the same multiple Document thing.
Chax an iChat Add-On does allow some control over the windows but I am not sure about the specifics about Incoming windows.

  • Useless chat window in skype 6.18 with coloured b...

WTH is this on new Skype with the chat window and coloured boxes you can only see about 3 posts at a time. How can I get the normal chat text back?
and the supid profile picture in the chat window too. Oh this is too much now Skype is just getting ridiculous

Thanks for the link to the earlier version of Skype, version 7.0 is just bl**dy awful. I simply do not understand MS, they seem to be hell bent on destroying Skype which, until MS took over, was a nice simple slick program to use. I think there may be a great many profssional users like me that want to throw up with all this 'social media' bulldust and what seems to be a 'dumbing down' of the application (this also applies to the latest incarnation of 'hotmail', yuck). Sometimes I feel that MS think all their users are morons that need their hands held all the time!!!
Version 7 stuck pictures again my contacts list, at a stroke leaving only 30% of my contacts visible. Oh yes you can turn the pictures off (thank goodness) BUT the space the pictures took up remains so my list was STILL showing only 30% as many names as it did. Then there is the appalling colour scheme in the chat window. The pale shade of blue made it pretty near impossible to see the date stamp at the right!  MUCH happier with the older version 6 back in place, I still prefer version 5 but MS won't allow that to run
Needless to say this time I have made certain that automatic updates are off!!

  • Flash Player Chat Window

    Hi
I clicked a Flash Player upgrade notification from my system tray. I am not sure wether this caused my problem.
I go to a chat site and it uses a Flash Player for people to chat to each other. It has always worked perfectly.
Now the chat window pops up but what normally happens is in the chat window a little counter comes up as the chat window loads with the persons photo name details and thier greeting and you just begin chating. The shell comes up but there is no content in the middle where you can actually chat. It just remains white.
So far I have deleted Flash Player 10 and reinsalled. Checked Scripting enabled, Updated Java, checked Java scripting enabled. Ensured 'pop ups' are not blocked. Checked security level is "Medium". Tested that the 'F' rotates on Adobe site and Adobe site says Flash Player Installed. I can view youtube videos no problem. In fact EVERYTHING is working beautifuly other than the chat window on my chat website.
The site does a check and says Flash all ok no de bugging required.
    Details:
    IE8
    Vista Home Edition
"F" rotates when entering Adobe website
    10,1,85,3 Installed
It is driving me crazy I have tried everything to get it working.
If anyone can help I would really appreciate it.
    Regards
    Michael

    Hi eidnolb
Oh I see the hardware accelerator hooks up your graphics card on your computer to give better quality video. Very clever.
Thanks for giving me the directions to retrieve these files. I wouldn't be able to find them by myself.
    Flash File contents:
    Flash10k.ocx
    FlashInstall
    FlashUti10k_ActiveX.dll
    FlashUtil10k_ActiveX
    Install
    NPSWF32.dll
Not sure if those files correct.
Found Shockwave Flash Object and it is Version 10.1.85.3 and is definately 'enabled'
I saw a post complaining about McAfee being loaded without actual permision. I have a Dell computer and McAfee was included with my computer so I am not sure if the included McAfee download when updating Flash Player would effect that.
Under McAfee in manage ad ons:
    scriptproxy disabled
    McAfee phishing filter disabled.
I didn't meet any random people on my travels today. Although I did meet this guy who told me a joke which I thought was quite funny. I will share it with you if that is ok.
A delivery guy knocks on a door to deliver a parcel. The door opens and a gentleman with a dog is standing there. Before the delivery man pats the dog he asks the man if his dog bites. The man says no. The dilevery man goes to pat the dog and the dog immediately bites his hand and growls. The delivery man says. I thought you said your dog doesn't bite. The guy says my dog doesn't bite that's not my dog.
Well I thought it was funny
    Thanks for the help eidnolb

  • Skype chat window suddenly turned portrait mode

I was chatting with my friend, and I tapped my trackpad a few times, then my chat window suddenly turned into a portrait-like mode. I'm not sure if this is a glitch, or if it's just a feature I don't know about. I can't figure out how to get it back to normal, and it's getting annoying. Can anyone help? I've added a screenshot in case you don't know what I'm talking about. The problem stays even after switching to full screen mode.

  • IChat chat window creates strange white bar in chat box when typing.

I made a topic about this before, but it was archived and not able to reply.
I wanted to include an image of the glitch. Here is a link to it.
    http://imgur.com/2YQd0.jpg
This is not an original screen shot, just a very close photoshopped version of it. Which looks exactly like what happens.
As you can see, there is a white bar that appears in iChat chat window after it gets a scroll bar. It appears for me after I type something (so the "..." bubble appears), then delete all of it (so the "..." bubble disappears). After the "..." bubble disappears, this is when I get this white bar at the bottom of the chat window, which disappears in a split second, almost like a flash.
I know this problem is really small, but it never existed in the pervious version of iChat. And the flashing white bar bothers me!! haha. Please fix this Apple! :P

This issue seems to happen regardless of other windows open. I tried resizing the box, I do not see any white. My background image tiles itself. Without a background, you will just have white anyway, so the white bar, if it does appear, is not visible by eye.
After replicating this issue myself again, I noticed this... The person you are chatting with must of responded at least once. Also, you must delete all the text you typed in the text area, not some of it. (You have to make your "..." bubble disappear from the chat window by deleting all of what you just typed.) Once your "..." bubble goes away, it is then where you see the white bar appear over where your "..." bubble just was. And it almost slides/pans down within the chat window.
Also I just noticed, that my whole background slides/pans downward with the white box. As the white box appears, it literally pushes my background image up and then it slides back into place as the white bar slides down and disappears.
By the way, this never happened on OSX 10.4 Tiger's version of iChat. I also believe it did not happen with Leopard as well, but I would have to check with that. But from what I've seen, this is definitely an issue that appeared in the newer version(s) of iChat.
I have recorded a video of the problem so you can see it in action. It should help explain what I just wrote. Here's the link. http://tinypic.com/player.php?v=20gd4hv&s=6
Right now it's to the point where I'm just curious to why it is happening. But I would like to see it go away.

  • Chat window stuck in minimize mode

I have a chat window that is stuck in minimize mode, unable to exit the window. Red window appears when receiving messages from buddy but cannot maximize the window. I have restarted my computer, force quit my iChat and every time I sign on that window is still minimized. Also I have tried deleting the buddy from my buddy list and adding them, that also did not work.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
I am a little confused as to what you mean.
An Invite window will resolve in to a Chat window.
A Window that is open will show up the next time iChat is Opened in the place you left it.
However I have not heard of a Invite window staying on Screen and not being able to Dismiss it.
Now there are some things that might explain it.
Any Outgoing Chat window will always occupy the space it was last in when you sent an Invite and had a chat.
This can mean your Video Chat one appears near where your camera is so it appears you are looking at the camera.
A Text chat one can be dragged so low that the Text field is off the bottom of the Screen.
This can mean you cannot reach the bottom right hand corner to resize it.
You may have dragged it so low that it is hidden by the DOCK and you cannot now grab the top bar and pull it out. (Leopard will not let you do this and if Dock Hiding was On will move it upwards if the DOCK Hiding is turned Off - I cannot check Snow Leopard at the moment but expect it is the same)
If none of these covers what you have then delete com.apple.iChat.plist found in your Home Folder (Little House icon)/Library/Preferences and then restart iChat.
Amongst other things it will return Windows to their Default positions.
You will lose any settings made in the iChat Preferences that have been changed from Default (Font, Colour, Background to IM colour, Alert Sounds, Saved Transcripts etc.) and Saved Status Messages.

  • Wasted space in chat window

I got the 7.2.0.103 upgrade this morning..
what's with the silly polka-dot column on the right side of the chat window?  Is there some slight-of-hand to get rid of it??  I want to maximize the width of the chat window, but after I make it more than about 2 inches wide... the polka-dots get added.... yuck.

Looks like you are right, camickr -- The default wrapped tab layout policy must be leaving extra space for wrapping the tabs. When I switch to SCROLL_TAB_LAYOUT the wasted space disappears. I had originally assumed that the panel would simply grow in size when it needs to wrap tabs, but apparently it's doesn't work like that. For the particular instance where it was troubling me, I'll just switch to the scroll tab layout. Thanks.

  • JAWS Screen Reader and Chat Window in AdobeConnect

Hello, I recently hosted a webinar for a group of people with disabilities from around the world. I noticed that the blind and low vision participants were not participating in the chat window and followed up with one of them afterwards. A participant from India who uses JAWS screen reading technology said:
"I didn’t face much of accessibility issues, but somehow I couldn’t use the Chat Window. As you had made me aware, I understand, that it should have been accessible with JAWS, but somehow, I couldn’t use it. May be, it is accessible with an upgraded version of JAWS."
Is there a certain version of JAWS that users must have in order to be compatible with the Chat window feature? Or might it have been user error? Let me know if there are any tips that we can give to future webinar attendees, as we often have participants with various disabilities. Thank you!
    - Ashley
    United States

    Hello Ashley!
The whitepaper http://wwwimages.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/education/pdfs/adobe-connect-accessibility -wp.pdf states JAWS 11 as a benchmark.
A much longer and broader thread on Connect & accessibility is at http://webaim.org/discussion/mail_thread?thread=4392. You may want to mine some information and see if it is useful. Unfortunately, a user could not use Connect UI with JAWS. Could be some edge case or a bug.
If and when you use Connect via JAWS, please do share your experience and feedback in this thread.

  • Keeping old chats after closing the chat window?

Is iChat capable of saving a conversation so I can still see it in the same chat window after I had closed it (say, accidentally or something)?
++ I don't need for it to save the WHOLE transcript, just the conversation for the session at the time.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
IF you have a chat window open that has chat that lasts several days then the Sub options of Last 5 (or whatever you chose) IMs will reduce the content down to just those if you close the window and want to see it again.
Also with iChat 6 you can set the option to have app remember what window were open on Quit and have them re-open on application launch.
This setting is for all apps and is in System Preferences > General (What used to be Appearance, top row, left end)
(I also think EZ Jim told me there is a similar Setting in the Window Menu of iChat but I can't find the chat he mentioned it in at the moment - it might have been on my other computer)
This will re-open chats that were present when iChat was last shut down (if the computer was Shut down say)
I know of no way to do this without Saving the chats.
