Employee left---need to accessa important/v file in his user account---cant

How caan I access an employees user account as admin? Password I knew must have been changed before he left. A really vital database can't be accessed. TIA
Seth

Is your set up such that you can use the 'install disk' method on the Mac concerned? That is boot from the disk and change the PW for the specified user per the installer utilities on said disk.

  • Can my husband access my itunes library from his user account on our shared mac?

    My husband and I share the use of our iMac and both sync to my itunes library. Because we both want to use the Cloud we've just set up a separate user account for my husband but I believe there is some way he can share my itunes library under his User Account.  Can anyone tell me how to do this please?  I've looked at the instructions to share the library with other devices that I may have but this doesn't seem to apply to sharing with my husband as he now has his own user a/c and he has his own Apple ID.

  • Files in other user account are restricted to admin account...

    Hi everyone.
    2 weeks ago, I've created a user account for my wife on my Mac Mini for iphone syncing purposes. My account is admin and hers is standard. Everything works great except restricted access to files.
    Besides regular Time Machine backups, I manually back up the iTunes, Address Book and iCal files on an external drive.
    Files on my user "side" are no problem, but when I try to access the files from Macintosh HD/Users/Wife path, I get all these folders with a small red "No Entry" sign just like the traffic one.
    I click "Get Info" and see that only my wife's user acc has "Read and Write", everyone is marked as "No access" and I'm not even there.
    Funny thing is, system asks for my permission to do the changes, but I'm not listed.
    What I do so far is to click "Get Info", go to permissions, unlock (a window pops up with my name as admin and I have to enter my main pass), add my name to the permitted users list, change it from "Read Only" to "Read & Write".
    Repeating these steps for each folder is becoming a bore. Can anyone give me a shortcut where I can have access to all files on any user account?

    Kappy,
    I think you've misunderstood my point. My wife has her own netbook and uses my PC at home just for syncing her phone. Reason is I'm the able one with computing related issues and she is distant to Mac.
    I created the user account for her, but she is the one who insisted on not having admin privileges as she wanted to avoid changing sth irreversibly by mistake.
    I log into her account for backup, but spend a lot of time moving media files from my locations to her itunes folders. That's when I need access to those restricted folders.
    Security in our household is not an issue as my trustworthiness is a BIG yes-yes.
    Now, apart from your guidance on moral issues and appropriate log-in 101, thank you for your clarification.

  • I have converted a pdf to word. How can I access the Word file from my online account?

    I have converted a pdf to word. How can I access the Word file from my online account? When it says 'download the converted file' I choose a location on my PC and click, but nothing happens. It seems that it can only save the converted file to my online account. I went to my online account but I see no way to look for the file

    Hey Fabrizio,
    You might need to sign up at "https://cloud.acrobat.com/exportpdf" using your Adobe ID credentials to convert your PDF file to Word.
    Do you get the 'download' prompt?
    Also, you can find the converted files by clicking at the 'Files' tab.
    Please try the same using a different browser and check.
    Hope to hear from you.

  • Can you transfer files between two user accounts on the same macbook pro?

    Can you transfer files between two user accounts on the same MacBook Pro?
    Specifically, I used the Migration Assistant to move music and photos from my old PC to my new MacBook.
    Somehow, I missed the fact that it was creating a new user account when it was doing this.  So none of music and photos are in the user account I originally set-up.  Instead, all these files are now in a different account.
    I'd like to consolidate all my files on the one user account and delete the other one.
    Is this possible and, if so, how do I do it?
    Thank you.

    you can crop files from one account to another using the Public Dropbox which every user account has.  Log into the user that has the files you want to move, then drag the folder you want to the new users' dropbox:
    I suggest a small scale test on a few files first before moving gigabytes of files.

  • Why can't i import photos from a different user account?

    Why when i import photos to iphoto from my user account it works fine. If i try importing them from the other user account it the photo it shows the event folder in the events page but when you go into it there are no photos, and when you close the app it dissappears completely. I dont understand why it is doing this? The iphoto library is actually from the other user account so there shoudnlt be any sharing issues. The only thing is that i iorignially installed on the other user account but it all started when i updated it to iphoto11 and installed it on my account. that shouldnt make a difference though??
    Also if it is not possible to be able to import from both accounts how can i change it so that the other account is able to import only and not from my account?

    I have the same iphoto library selected for both user acounts
    How?
    and share my photos is checked on both accounts from preferences.
    If they use the same Library, why are you sharing this way?

  • Badly in need of help: Importing asf-files to iTunes

    Hi all,
    I have a truely oldfashioned problem. I work as a teacher and some of the materials I use are on cd-rom using asf-format. I'd really like to import the files to iTunes (and then to my iPad, 3rd gen.) so that it's easier to handle when I don't have access to a cd-rom/dvd drive.
    Do you have any suggestions?
    Best
    The Danish teacher

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Systems_Format
    It might be very, very difficult to work with the files.  It is strange that a CD would use a streaming format since that is usually a web page format.  If it is in a proprietary format you will need a player specifically designed to accommodate that.  then too they may be in WMA format instide that stream which means proprietary format inside proprietary format.  That format is designed primarily for Windos systems so add on a third hurdle.
    You can check out VLC media player and see if it will play them.  You can likely copy the CD to your computer and use if from there.  I don't know if you can find anything to convert though.

  • Import PST files for multiple users at the same time?

    While importing PST files into archive mailboxes, the Exchange 2010 mailbox server went to 100% CPU and memory usage and I could not stop the imports because the EMS stopped responding.  We had to restart the whole server to get back to normal.
    Not sure if importing PSTs was the cause of it it was a coincidence.  We have done imports the same way before without this issue.
    How many PST imports can be done at the same time and how do we queue up multiple users and have the mailbox imports have unique names for each user?  I noticed they are always called MailboxImport and MailboxImport1 and then it starts over as MailboxImport
    again for additional users. So, if more than one user's PSTs are being imported at the same time, we will have multiple identically named imports running.
    We would like multiple users' PST imports to queue up and start automatically when the previous users' imports complete.

    Please try like this. Rename folder name same as alias.  i.e. \\server\share\<alias>. below are examples.
    "\\server\share\jsmith"
    "\\server\share\tjones"
    "\\server\share\rsmith"
    "\\server\share\bspears"
    "\\server\share\mmouse"
    And run below command to take PST from the corresponding
    foreach ($i in (Get-Mailbox)) { New-MailboxImportRequest -Mailbox $i -FilePath "\\Server\share\$($i.Alias)\$($i.Alias).pst" -baditemlimit 50 -acceptlargedataloss ;while ((Get-MailboxImportRequest -mailbox $i | ? {$_.Status -eq "Queued" -or $_.Status -eq "InProgress"})) { sleep 180 } }
    If a folder missing with the alias you will see an error similar to this.I think this will work for you. You just keep only the required PST folders to import in the "\\Server\share" folder.
    "Unable to open PST file '\\server\share\mmouse\mmouse.pst'.
    Error details: Could
     not find a part of the path '\\server\share\mmouse\mmouse.pst'.

  • Read/Write App Files Under Limited User Account

    Hi All,
    My desktop app is intended for Windows only. I'm writing files to the hard disk to store app specific configuration.
    The applications main data source is a ZIp file that consists several XML files. The user can store this ZIP anywehre they like and the application will extract the necessary files to a temp dir so that it can read in data.
    When logged into a PC as either an Administrator or Power User, I am able to read write my config files and extract XML files from the ZIP with no problem.
    When logged in as a user with "limited" access, I can only read and write the config files. But when I go to extract any XML files from the ZIP, it seem to get denied due to insufficient permissions.
    The working directory for storeing all these files is: C:\Documents and Settings\<USER NAME>\Application Data\<MY APP>\
    Don't users with limited access have full read/write permissions to their own home directory?
    If not, what can be done to give them full read write access? Is there perhaps some other location I should be using?
    Also, would code signing from some place like Verisign do any good?
    I'm targeting Windows 2000/XP.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Jim

    You can also access the user folder through the registry:
         public static final String APP_DATA_FOLDER_CMD = REG_QUERY_UTIL
              + "\"HKCU\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\"
              + "Explorer\\Shell Folders\" /v AppData";
          * Gets the current user Application Data folder path defined in the
          * registry.
          * @return The current user Application Data folder path.
         public static String getCurrentUserAppDataFolderPath()
              return queryREG_SZ(APP_DATA_FOLDER_CMD);
          * Performs the query in the registry for the specified value type.
          * @param queryString The query to be performed.
          * @param valueType The value type.
          * @return The value data for the specified value name in the registry.
         public static String queryREG_SZ(String queryString, String valueType)
              try
                   Process process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(queryString);
                   StreamReader reader = new StreamReader(process.getInputStream());
                   reader.start();
                   process.waitFor();
                   reader.join();
                   String result = reader.getResult();
                   int p = result.indexOf("REG_SZ");
                   if (p == -1)
                        return null;
                   return result.substring(p + valueType.length()).trim();
              catch (Exception e)
                   return null;
         }This will get you the user directory from the registry. However, my issue is
    that the value returned was:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<USER NAME>\Application Data
    Which is great, but that folder didn't exists on my computer. I cannot find
    any documentation to say why it would be there. Except I had no Application
    Data folders under any user. I have XP.
    So when running the program on one computer, I had no valid folder to write
    to and it wouldn't let me create it. Said the <USER NAME> folder could not
    be written to. canWrite() returned false and the directory could not be
    created.
    On another computer, I had the Application Data folder, the canWrite()
    returned false, yet I was able to create a folder and file inside.
    I checked the default <ALL USERS> directory and the Application Data folder
    did not exist there.
    I don't understand how I am supposed to work around it...
    If the folder doesn't exist, I need to be able to create it, whether it's in the
    <ALL USER> or <USER NAME> folder.
    I guess I am counting on the canWrite() to be accurate. Yet it appears that
    I cannot rely on the canWrite() since a false was returned. I wrote!!
    So confused ... need to be able to write to this folder on any computer...

  • Move Files To New User Account.

    Hello,
       I set up a new account with admin access and noticed that I didn't have access to all data like movies, documents as well as app registrations! I would like to move my files to the new acc and delete the old one. Should I move the support files and delete the old acc, or should I start over?

    As an admin user, you can change the permissions on the folders. Use "Get Info" on the folders and at the bottom add yourself as a new user. You'll need to click on the padlock to unlock it. And, after you add yourself, click on the little star dialog box and select, "Apply to all enclosed items..."
    What was wrong with the old user account? Why did you add a new one?

  • Sharing files among different user accounts -- file/folder permissions?

    I have two main user accounts that I switch between during the day (essentially a PERSONAL account and a WORK account). This allows me to keep separate Mail, iCal, etc -- as well as desktop applications and file organization. However, I am having some major issues with sharing data between the user accounts.
    WHAT I WANT: A local drop box for shared communal files between these two primary users. Seems simple enough, right?
    WHAT I DID: I created a subfolder in /Users/Shared/ called "COMMUNAL DROP BOX" and set the permissions to R/W for both my user accounts, and no access for the other accounts. However, when I copy files into this folder from my PERSONAL account -- it retains the file level permissions. For example, I grabbed some photos from my iPhone that I shot of a display for work -- I grabbed them off the phone and then dragged them into the drop box. They are in the shared folder, but the file perms are set to PERSONAL_ACCOUNT "Read & Write" and Everyone "No Access." There's no way I can continue to individually change every single file's permission -- how do I set it up to automatically match the folder, so that files like this are then readable by my work account?
    -Jason M.

    On my machine I've created a directory(folder) in the /Users directory called localshare. Since the directory can have just one owner, I've made root own the folder.
    sudo mkdir /Users/localshare
    Every user on my machine belongs to the group-Staff. I need to change the group class on the localshare directory that I've created.
    sudo chown :staff /Users/localshare
    As a reference, I changed the traditional permissions to reflect my desired results and lock down the permissions some.
    sudo chmod 770 /Users/localshare
    I have added an ACL on the localshare directory that allows the group staff to do anything within the directory- make file and directories, modify files that they do not owner, etc.
    sudo chmod +ai "staff allow list,addfile,search,delete,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,readextattr,writeextattr,readsecurity,file_inherit,directoryinherit" /Users/localshare
    This works well for me with one issue. Files or folders must be copied to the localshare directory. They cannot be moved.

  • How can i share files across multiple user accounts?

    I have four user accounts on the same iMac and I'd like to be able to view the files within each account.  When I try access one of the other three accounts through Finder, the folders have red minus signs on them.  If I try to open one, I get an error message about not have the right authorities.  However, I've given all four user accounts administrator access.  Thanks.

    Thanks for the response.  Do I change the rights by opening the folder, clicking "Get Info" and chaning the permissions to "write and read?"  If so, I did that.  Is there anything else I need to do?

  • File permissions between user accounts on one computer

    Hi!!!
    I have an iMac PowerPC G5 computer which I set with 2 accounts, one for me (the administrator) and another for some workers.
    I´m having problems regarding writing and using files. I have some documents which both accounts need to use, read and save. The original files are not in the administrator account, but on the normal one. What I do when I want to read and write on a file located on the normal account is access to it going into the other user account and open it from the document folder. BUT i have to be givening permissions all the time because it lose them when I switch between both accounts
    Sorry for my english, i´ll try to explain better:
    1-I open a file which is in the normal account from my administrator account
    2- It wont let me save anything so i have to give writing permissions
    3-I switch to the normal account and wont allow me to write again, so I have to give permission again
    4- Everytime I switch accounts i will have to give permission
    How can i solve this?
    Thanks!!

    I wondered if it might be possible to modify files copied into such a shared folder with the aid of an AppleScript or Automator action saved as an application
    nothing you can do with applescript or automator can come anywhere close to be as simple or as effective as the ACL method. folder actions only watch the top level of the folder they are attached to and plus they are extremely unreliable. what could be simpler than the method outlined above? you run two terminal commands and you are set. no scripts to run, no cron or launch daemons to make to run some periodic change of permissions scripts. file system does everything itself.
    or would opening a file and then doing a simple 'Save As' to the folder do the trick?
    only if you don't mind creating multiple copies of the same file any time you need to change it.
    the only real problem with the ACL method is that inherited ACLs are not applied to items moved into the shared folder, only to copied or new files. this is not normally an issue except with some applications like photoshop which like to utilize temp files. when photoshop saves chages to a file it does the following. it saves the changed file to a temp file in a temporary directory, deletes the current file and then moves the temp file to where the original file was. because moving is involved this washes out the ACLs. very bad of photoshop. if you are unlucky enough to be using an app like this then there is a different method that can be used that does not have the deficiency of ACLs with respect to moved files but it requires some more prep. although once the prep is complete it works quite well. see my os x hint here
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20100202195536952
    on how to do that. However, in most situations the ACL method is perfectly suitable and is much easier to set up so I recommend you go with that.
