Emptied trash.. now I need to retrieve a .doc

Deleted a MS word doc by accident (obviously).
called Apple Cust Service a few times this afternoon hoping for advice. They offered forward me to Tech Support and/or Sales each time. Each time I was disconnected but not before it being suggested that Tech Tool 4 might work, but they were unsure.
I am by no means tech-literate. But I am desperate to retrieve this document.
If I were to feel somewhat certain that a resource (Tech Tool 4 or any other) would work I would be happy to give it a go as I am really in a pinch.
Hoping someone could confirm that an idiot w/ out much technical know how has a fair chance of retrieving a document, or advise another course.

As a word of warning, do not use your computer until you have a means of getting the "lost" .doc file in question. At some point the hard drive will use the space where the .doc file was sitting. I have used Data Rescue to reclaim files from a hard drive which was in real bad shape. Saved my bacon.

Now I backup my computer hard drive everyday. Start backing up externally once this .doc mess is sorted. Also, having Leopard and using the Time Machine option, your file would be found. Too late for this road, you need to look at other options once the "lost" .doc file is found. This happens once to most of us, twice and more to the ill prepared.

Can't empty trash, tried secure (option-cmd-shift-del) & Terminal

Have had this issue for a while and searched the Community for answers before.
Had over a million items in the Trash (after trying to clean stuff up) - I know, I know.
I usually do the Secure Empty Trash, with no problems, but now that so much was in the Trash, it kept quitting the emptying process, and not actually emptying.
Then I tried the Option-Command-Shift-Delete, and am down to about 17,000+ items.
When I try to empty Trash now, it empties about 500-1000 items, then stops/quits emptying.
Then if I try it again, it counts up the items to empty and I still have that same 17k+ items.
Today I tried the Terminal commands, but the trash was still full when I signed back in...
So now what?

Relaunch the Finder, then from the Finder menu bar, select
Finder ▹ Preferences... ▹ Advanced
and uncheck the box marked
Empty Trash securely
Try again to empty the Trash.

You can use officecontrol UI element for displaying doc files.

I need to retrieve my trash "Do You want to empty"

After reading email and I go to empty trash, there is a tab that comes to say "are you sure that you want to empty trash" I am not sure what happened when I closed Thunderbird but now when I empty trash that tab does not come up any more. How to get it back as sometimes I empty my trash in error. Thanks

* click on 'Config editor' button
it will tell you to be careful :)
* in top search type: trash
* look for this line: mailnews.emptyTrash.dontAskAgain; true
* Double click to toggle 'true' to 'false' or right click on line and select 'Toggle'
* Close config editor - top right X
* click on OK to save changes in Options.

You usually have to use the program's uninstaller utility for such things as Symantec. Read this:

You may need to install it all over again, just to use its uninstaller.

Lightroom 5.5 grid view fails to load some images. These do load in develop, then re-appear in grid. Re-installed 5.4 (after deleting 5.5, then emptying trash in 10.9.5) and it now exhibits same behavior. Suggestions?

These same images fail to load in slideshows; "loading" appears without the image ever appearing. I can export these grayed-out images and retrieve the image content in the exported file. Not being able to see all images in grid view is an inconvenience for sure; e.g., I can't review all the contents of a collection before posting it. This behavior didn't occur until I upgraded to 5.5. Now it has migrated back into 5.4, despite having selected 5.5 and emptying trash before the re-install.

Retrieval of files from emptied trash

I sent all files in Documents to trash and emptied it because I never used "Documents". I had all my needed files in "My Documents". After emptying all "Documents" from trash, I found my "My Documents" folder was gone. The "Documents"folder was still there, but of course, empty. Is there any to retrieve the "My Documents" folder? I thought the "Document" and "My Documents" folders to be separate folders. Looks like I made a big mistake. Any chance of retrieving the files in " My Documents?
Most of my photos are backed up, and not lost. I had no back up for the text files. Thank you for any help I may receive on this problem.

Both have free trial versions that let you see if the software will help before you decide to buy. You will also need a second hard drive equal to or larger in size than your first drive.
It is critical that you do not use the computer or even turn it on until you have rescued your files. Files only have the directory reference to them removed when you empty the trash and are still present on the computer. However, their space is marked as available to any other file creation done on the computer (even done by you booting the computer) and there is risk that your files will be overwritten by the computer.

If you delete songs (and other items) from the main iTunes library, yes, you need to empty the Trash because iTunes puts the song files into the Trash. When deleting items from an iPod, the items are not being deleted from the main iTunes library, so nothing should end up in the Trash.
Hopefully, you are not deleting items from your main iTunes library, just to sync those deletions from the iPod. If you are, there is a better way. You can post back if you want more info...

In an effort to preserve Hard Drive space, I inadvertently ended up "trashing" my entire 2600 selection or so iTunes inventory (but NOT emptied!). Also, I somehow also moved that same collection to the Desktop section of my Finder. My ORIGINAL INTENT was only to MOVE my iTunes Library to one of my Lacie external hard drives.....thereby freeing up main Hard Drive space. In the initial "move", it was only my aim to Trash JUST THE DUPLICATE SELECTIONS from the iTunes Library. Is there a way to "clean up that library by eliminating duplicates"....once I (hopefully!) get this mess straightened out....?? Any and all help greatly appreciated. .....Don Perry, Peaks Island, Maine.....

On reboot hold down the shift key. It is similar to booting with extensions off in the old days. You might also try setting up a test account and see if you can dump the trash from there.

didn't question the amount of over 600,000 files as I thought Maverick was updating my system from snow leopard - right? I missed something? HELP PLEASE

Accidently Renamed Trash, now I can't empty it.

i accidently renamed the .trash folder to trash. now i can't empty it. when i tried to rename it, it said that the folder name was already reserved. how do i get it back to normal?

this most likely means that a new .trash folder was created. either way, log out/in and trash the Trash folder normally (just drag it to Trash). you should be able to do it.
