Empty applet windows on desktop (gnome + compiz)
Hi,
After an update a couple of month ago I'm stuck with five empty applet windows starting on the desktop (4x wnck-applet 1x clock-applet). The windows of these applets are really small and are all positioned in the top left of the desktop. This behavoir is very annoying since I have to close these windows manually each time after login. The applets that I do want start up in the panels just fine. Does anybody know what the problem is and how this can be fixed?

If you are having problems with your panel you can reset the panel to a default config by moving the copying the current panel config then deleting
cp -r .gconf .gconf.old
rm -r .gconf/apps/panel
Then logout and back in to test.

Gnome+compiz - window border issue

I am a longtime ubuntu user and just transitioned into Arch over the weekend (from karmic 9.10). I am very, very impressed so far, everything works on my thinkpad R50p without issues.
I have gnome+compiz installed with the opensource ATI driver and everything works , but I have a strange issue. Whenever I maximize a window to fit fullscreen the top window border (with the window name, maximize/minimize/close buttons) doesn't display properly. I am able to 'unmaximize' windows by right clicking and choosing the proper option on the top window border.

He suggests to open ccsm (run it as a command from the terminal, or start it from the system menu) and find windows decoration.
Make sure it is enabled (it allready was, in my case). Now click on it, to edit the options. In my case command was empty. So, I put gtk-window-decorator
there, as suggested on the blog, I mentioned earlier. Click on Back and Close. The borders should appear now.

I need help with java on windowsXP after updating iTunes to the latest version. My java will not work and I get error message need java virtual machine to run applet window. Did not have this problem prior to the iTunes update.

Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

Use gnome with a window manager that can do this. I don't think metacity can be configured (hardly at all) to do this. Consider integrating XFWM or one of the *box'es. When you've grown used to it, you'll thank me -
9i forms_mdi_window maximize doesn't truly maximize Applett window
When I start a 9i Form it pops up in a separate Applett window, and then the form does a:
set_window_property(FORMS_MDI_WINDOW,WINDOW_STATE, MAXIMIZE);
However, this does not exactly maximize the Applett window. It just makes it as big as the whole desktop, which incidentally extends the status bar below the Task Bar/Start Menu on the MS Windows desktop.
Manually pressing the maximize button on the MDI windows is, however, able to do a maximize. However, setting it programmatically does not work the same as under 6i (which did it correctly).
Is there a way to actually make it maximize the MDI window programmatically?

I can still see the staus bar and message bar and the browser window does not obsure the windows task bar.
The forms window within the java applet does not maximise as it used to in 6i client server.
Previously the minimise/restore/close buttons were directly under the main runtime window (is that the MDI window?)
Now there is an extra window bar underneath the menu and toolbar canvas. It is maximised but doesn't integrate itself into the MDI window as previously. -

1. An empty browser window appears upon startup. I can't figure out how to eliminate this problem.
2. The old Verizon buttons still appear on the desktop. If I sign in with these I get the old home page??
Is anyone one else experiencing similar problems? Otherwise, FIOS is working well.Actually none of that would be related to the service at all. The icons that are installed on your desktop simply are bookmarks to different Verizon pages. I actually removed all of that to clean up my desktop. Your issue could be due to the fact that they have changed around some webpages or where they direct people, but they wouldn't have the ability to change a saved bookmark on your desktop.
Regarding the window popping up, I honestly have no idea why that would be happening -- do you notice another program appearing with it? Does that empty window vanish after some time? That would definitely throw up a red flag for me if my computer started doing that. I am not fond of programs running when I don't expect them to. -
Windows 7 desktop and windows 8 desktop connected to router
I have a windows 7 64 bit desktop and a 7510 e photosmart printer connected wireless, though the desktop is wired, I purchased a windows 8 desktop and connected it to my router and set up my email account and it did pick up my printer and could print but not scan or EFax, now I get a 1625 message and cannot print from it.
I tried to download the print and scan wizard from HP web site but my PC froze up.
Do i have to run the disc or set up a home group, not bothered about being able to E Fax or scan to email with it, just need it to print as it did before.
Also on my windows 7 I can log into HP connected and my printer shows up ok, when I press the icon on the printer for Eprint it shows my HP email address but when I press the Fax icon it says NOT CONNECTED TO ANY NETWORK. Cloud services set up a static IP address for me last year as each time we had a power outage I lost my connection to my printer. If anyone can help I would appreciate it.

Windows 7 and windows 8 desktop wired and 7510e printer connected to win 7 wireless
I have a windows 7 64 bit HPavilion Elite 150f desktop set up wired with a 7510e photosmart printer connected to it wireless, now I have purchased a windows 8 desktop HP envy 700-019 desktop.
When I set up my new windows 8 desktop I just plugged it into my wireless router/modem combo and it found my printer and I could just print from it, I did not download any software or drivers for my printer or set up a home group as I was not sure how to set it up but last night I tried to set up a homegroup,
I used my wireless network key and entered it and pressed connect, then I entered the Homegroup password that was downloaded for me from Microsoft, but my windows 7 says homegroup and my windows 8 shows private network so I am not sure what I have done wrong, I chose to only share music and printers, can anyone tell me how to do this correctly as I am not sure that I have done it properly.
On my windows 8 I can go to my printers web site by entering the static IP address that cloud support set up for me and it shows as connected but I do not want to enter any printer code as that is already set up on my windows 7, I can also scan to email on my windows 8 but I am not sure what if any security I have on my windows 8. The last time I had a homegroup set up I payed someone to do it for me so I did it by guess work more than anything, if someone can lead me through it step by step I would appreciate it.Hi @emma22
I would like to do my best to help, but please bear in mind the issue you are expressing is an inquiry for Microsoft not HP. I did find something I think will be most helpful, and I hope it resolves the issue, but if the issue persists, or you have additional questions, it might be best to reach out to the Microsoft community.
Here is what I found; HomeGroup from start to finish.
In the top right hand corner of the article, you can change it from WIndows 7 to Windows 8. I hope this helps.

I have an Epson printer on a Wifi network. Windows 7 desktop is running the network, and my wife's HP Win 7 laptop prints to it just fine. My MacBook Pro running Yosemite won't detect it, and I do have the latest driver installed. I didn't have a problem when I had a Canon Pixma on the network, but when I replaced it with the Epson nothing seems to work. I go to add a printer to the queue and only the FAX function of the printer shows up - not the WS-4530 print function. Does anyone out there have any suggestions? Please??? :-)

I can't find any answer to why EMET 5.1 blocks Internet Explorer from running in Windows 8 Desktop version. Initially Google Chrome wouldn't work either but after uninstalling EMET 5.1 and reinstalling it Chrome now works. Also it prevents Microsoft
Office 2003 Word, Excel, Access, Outlook and Publisher from running. It says DEP mitigation and closing application. I also get the error that Microsoft Office Access or other applications has stopped working and they only work under safe mode.
How do you get these applications to work in EMET 5.1? Do I need to get rid of EMET 5.1? Or are there other solutions.

Adobe Reader Touch doesn't show more than one file on screen and doesn't show them on the desktop. Apparently these are very old fashioned things that Microsoft doesn't think we'll want to do any more and calls them "legacy" to make them sound antiquated.
If you want to do these things use the legacy Adobe Reader, a much more powerful and flexible app (and not obsolete in the slightest). http://get.adobe.com/reader . There are no legacy apps in the Windows App Store. -
I have tried and failed to copy my iTunes library and playlists from my Windows 8 desktop to my Windows 7 laptop using an external hard drive. Can it be done? Help would be appreciated. I have followed instructions found online but the library of music doesn't pull in. Thanks!
NateMigrate an iTunes library from one computer to another
These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entireiTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one, with ratings, play counts, playlists etc. preserved. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd normally recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library and unlike copying with Windows Explorer the process can be resumed if it is interrupted and it will continue to the next item if there are any read/access errors.
Note if you have iOS devices and haven't moved your contacts and calendar items across then you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See Make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then seeRecover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

I changed permission setting on main disk...took forever now when I bootup I get the chime...apple icon...fan noise...thats it...internal drive is broken...no Mac install disk..I have a windows XP desktop with installation disk..if I was to get external drive ...could I use windows XP styartup disk just to boot the "17"Powerbook-G4...have no intention of downloading XP on the Mac...just want to boot it up...or is there a way to boot the Mac from the XP desktop...cables...etc?

Since updating to 3.6.1 I don’t get an empty browser window in my tool bar when it opens --- just a list of search engines. I can’t find anything in “Help” or the FAQ’s that seem to address this.
My only choice seems to go back to Safari.I am not sure what your problem is, can you give more details.
One possibility is you may be in full screen mode, for details on fixing that see the [[menu bar is missing]] article.
If you are missing various toolbar items, see the [[back and forward or other toolbar items are missing]] article.
If your problem is something else please give more details.
