Empty desktop folders

Hi,
Sorry if this has been answered before.
I recently installed a 2012 R2 server into my old 2008 R2 domain. Updated the schema, made my new 2012 server the master in all respects. I find that when my Windows 8 clients log on, any folders with shortcuts in them on their redirected desktops are empty
but only for about ten to fifteen minutes, at which point they become populated. Any ideas?
Also, I notice that the policy templates on my 2008 server are different to my 2012 server. Is this because I need to set up a central store? Replication seems fine.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
i'll answer your second question first:
the adm files are local to a machine (no replication involved here). There is no need for a central store. The adm files are only used for cosmetic purposes (to display settigns in rsop or group policy editor). When the policies are applied ,the adm files
do not matter.
You can install updated adm files on the 2008 servers to get around the cosmetic/display issue or if you want to configure 2012 specific settings from your 2008 dc.
Your first question is not entirely clear to me. let me re-phrase; please correct my statements:
Your users have redirected desktops.
the folder they redirect to contains shortcuts
if users click the shortcut, they see an empty folder
After a while the shortcuts seem to redirect to valid destinations
Do you have offline files turned on? Are the shortcut destinations included in offline files?

  • Firewire Drives creating desktop folders

    Hi,
I have 2 external firewire drives (one Lacie 160GB and one Maxtor 300GB). Both are partitioned in 2. The 4 volume creates an empty desktop folder. I throw them on the trash but they always come back. Well its not a serious problem but it bothers me a lot. Anyone ? thx
    G5 Dual 2.3 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Some more information: Well, inside the apparent empty desktop folders there are two invisible files: ".localized" and an empty folder "VISE temp folder".

why do all my desktop folders appear to be empty?..all of  a sudden....If I do an 'open,' I see a little red circle on the upper right hand corner with an arrow. When I click it, it tells me I have  number X files in the folder. But...I cannot see them....

You have done something which change the permissions and your user is not able to access anymore. You can play around and try to correct permissions manually by going to your home folder, right click on the Desktop folder and choose get info and when new window will be open, at the bottom of it, check if your username is listed and if has Read & Write permissions.
Other option is to boot to recovery mode (after starting up your computer press and hold CMD+R), then from top panel click on Utilities and choose Terminal. Once terminal is open, type in it resetpassword and when new window will be open, select Macintosh HD as your system drive, select your password and click on the RESET button which is next to "Reset home folder permissions and ACL". NOTE: do not reset your password, you don't have to.
Second options would be better in case if permissions on other folders been changed too.

  • New desktop folders on Lion aren't empty

When I create new folders on my desktop, they aren't empty as they should be. They instead contain the folders already created on the desktop: it's as if instead of creating a new folder, I'm creating new desktops over and over. Rebooting, turning off and on made no difference in this behavior. I currently have three folders on my desktop, and they all have this problem. If I create a fourth one, it will have all four directories in it, even if the new folder is unnamed.
Is anybody else seeing this behavior? How can I make empty new folders on my desktop?

In the Finder, simply click on 'new folder' in the File menu (menu bar at top with Finder showing at left).
You'll get a new empty folder on the desktop with the name "untitled". Highlight that, hit the Return key, and the field changes so you can type in - name your folder whatever you want, i.e. Pictures. Then you move your pics or whatever into it. After that, you can file it away so it doesn't clutter up your desktop:
As you can see from mine: I have several folders in my Documents Folder.
And, (the next column), I have my most important folder ' B's Docs' that has many subfolders in it which hold all sorts of files, docs, etc.
When done, I'd simply move those strange folders you have now into the trash and empty it.

  • All desktop folders disappeared

One day after I started up my ibook, I noticed all my desktop folders and info were gone. No where to be found. Luckily there wasn't a lot of important info there.
Everything on the hard drive is still there, all my apps, etc.
Is there anything I can do to retrieve the folders without paying someone to try to retrieve the info? The trash is empty so nothing is there.
When I search for something that was on the desktop, the search results say
"The alias could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found."
Then the options are: Delete Alias, Fix Alias, OK.
Any suggestions? Any options that don't involve painstaking code etc.?

    Hi cornelius,
This is so odd, I just posted almost the identical reply at about the same time you did but mine is not showing up in thread for me. It does show in my posts but by no method going back to the thread is it showing for me....very strange.
Looks like Discussions is having another prolonged delay to posting again for some reason.....I'll hop over to Feedback About Discussions to see if others are seeing this...of course by the time you see this my post will most likely be showing up....
hope all is well with you,

edit: Yep, there they are....strange that the posts are taking so long to post to the thread...

  • Desktop folders won't open

None of my desktop folders will open. My Macintosh HD icon will also not open when it is on the desktop. The folders will open if I navigate to the Finder/File/Open menu. Similarly all the dock icons will open. The desktop location seems to be the problem. Any ideas?

I've never had that problem before. My first response would be to log out, and log back in. If that doesn't work, then you could try rebooting.
This may not do the trick, but it's worth a shot:
Go to your Home folder, then Library, then Caches. Select all of the files within that folder and press command + delete. Log out, and log back in. Empty the trash.

  • Desktop folders populating my user folder

    Hi,
I'm not sure this is normal, but in my
    users/me/
folder I have too many "Desktop 1", "Desktop 1-1", "Desktop 2" (and so on, up to 21) folders
They are empty and don't seem to be doing any harm, but I would really like to understand where do they come from.
My OS 10.4.10 is in spanish, so my real desktop folder is named "Escritorio", there is only one of it with the nice mini desktop icon on my user folder and it works fine.
Any hints on why is this happening and how can it be avoided would be appreciated.

I have the same problem. I then parked the real desktop icon in the trash so that I could delete the other desktop marked folders safely. Now I cannot drag the real desktop icon out of the trash. the system is now making more desktop folders.
How do I get back to just the real desktop icon?

  • OBIEE 11.1.1.6.X MUD - Empty Presentation Folders Disappearing after checkout

    Hello ,
We are facing an issue when checking out a project from Master Repository configured in MUD environment.
Empty presentation folders in subject area's are disappearing when a project is checked out.
I confirmed Master repository has all the empty folders in Presentation Layer Subject Area, but the checked out repository does not have them.
Did anyone encounter this issue? Do you know if there is a patch supporting OBIEE 11.1.1.6.X version.
If "Yes" Can you please share the bug number?
    Thanks Again.

You most probably haven't set Application Roles in EM for external users.
Users belonging to application roles are only allowed to access OBI.
Check the existing BIConsumer application role, see if you can add external users, and if not, use 'Create Like'.

  • All Desktop Folders COPY items to and from, not move

I just installed 10.6 on one of my computers, my tricked-out Mac Pro.... but now when I go to move anything in or out of any of the desktop folders, the files COPY to the desktop and do not MOVE to the desktop.
I have looked for some setting and can't find it. This is just really weird... do I need to re-install?

Hey CT, I'm have the same problem which is how I found you guys tonight talking about this. I used to be annoyed enough when XP or Vista took 45 mins to "move" 3 GB of data but I fell out out of my chair when 10.6 wanted to take 8 hours to copy 80GB from one folder up one level to the top directory. I was so baffeled and ******, I put a fan on the MacBook Pro and went to the gym when it "COPIED" one level up.
I do have a contact at Apple and would love to get to the bottom of this because this is something I can't even bring up at a party with PC people at!!

  • Desktop folders will not move

I accidentally hit a combination of keys and now all my desktop folders and files are aligned on the right side of the screen.
If I try to move any of them they automatically bounce back.
I've searched the preferences and the option bar without success.
Can someone guide me back to where I can position them anywhere on the screen.
    Thank you.

Control (right) click on your desktop and in the little popup box select Show View Options, next change the last box from Name to Snap to Grid
and then re-arrange your Desktop Icons.

  • Desktop Folders now restrict minimum size

    Desktop folders.
Apple, and the world's technical press, celebrate, as they should all the great NEW features in Lion, and every OS upgrade,
for the all the new an innovative great features.
It is left to a small minority of people who need computers to get a day's work done, and whose voice is seldom heard by Apple,
to encounter the endless surprises in great features that are put in the trash by Apple for no good reason. Each OS upgrade
takes away great features, an Lion does this as well.
The topic at this email is desktop folders.
You could, until now, drag the folder border to encompass a single file name, whic I sometimes really like to do. NOW there is
an arbitrary and pointless SIZE LIMITATION to how small you can make an open folder on your desktop. The minimum size
is rather large, about the space for 10 files in list view.
Why Apple engineers so gleefully and unapologetically trash great features while celebrating what they call new features
    is incomprehensible to me.
Folder views in Lion are the sloppiest and most unpredicatble so far.
For all of its celebrated innovation, Apple engineers also have a really long shadow of destruction and removal
that is not encouraging, that is in many ways rather offensive, as it flys in the face of common sense
and is a rotten spot in the endless posturing Apple makes about respect for their customers, in particular
the long-standing base of users that have stayed with Apple when it was almost down the tubes. I have been
an Apple user since OS 5 at least.

Widen the grid spacing; however, if the name is still too long, it will display like that.
Use List or Column view, or hover over the name and it will popup the full name.

  • Why does double clicking not open desktop folders?

After installing OpenOffice, my Mac Mini suddenly lost the ability to open desktop folders by double clicking.
Open Office does not have a de-installer that I can locate.
    Please advise.
    Thank you!

You may have to log out and back into your account, or restart the computer, for the system to work correctly after a software installation; at times one could also try other things in what may be an exercise in futility just in case something comes from any frustration and accidentally helps resolve any issue that may be in hiding...
The 'safe boot' and 'repair disk permissions' and other antics sometimes will work to scare the gremlins out of a testy Mac. Or, perhaps it really is as simple as the man says. Adjust the mouse/trackpad in system preference? Could be the settings changed and it may be trying to interpret your clicks too fast.
I'd not tried 'open office' but some time ago did try the NeoOffice version and it was OK. Then again, so was old AppleWorks back in the day; unless you require some kind of need to parrot MS Office regularly.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Empty Untitled Folders in Aperture

I migrated all of my events from IPhoto to Aperture, and I now have a bunch of empty Untitled Folders that create themselves every time I open Aperture. They are essentially ghost folders because they don't contain anything. I can delete them, but they continue to come back. Any thoughts?

What is your Aperture 3 version?
In Aperture 3,3 these untitled projects (not folders) can be created by the autpmatic import from Photo Stream. I'd disable the automatic import, if you have imported all images that you want and toggle the photo stream off and on the System Preferences "iCloud" panel.
I migrated all of my events from IPhoto to Aperture,
How did you do this? Are you using your iPhoto Library as Aperture library?  Then check in iPhoto for hidden photos. Any event with hidden photos will show as empty project in Aperture, and you csnnot unhide the photos in Aperture, only in iPhoto.

  • Why doesn't Mail empty Junk folders at every quit?

I select "empty Junk at quit" but still Mail doesn't empty those folders at every quit. Anyone know why this happens?

This is still happening to me with Mail v6.0 (1485) after updating to Mountain Lion.  I have to quit and restart Mail after resuming from sleep to get it to connect to any of my accounts.  One iCloud and one GMail account.
I have tried starting from scratch by removing all accounts, files in my Library ("Application Support" and "Caches" folders) and cleaned up my keychain, but still the problem persists.
