Empty Trash Can

I downloaded a Media Player, and I created a copy of the shortcut on accedent, and now when I try and delete it in the trash can, it won't let me. It says these little pictures that must be in the shortcut, even though it says it is unlocked. Is there a way to override this, or to somhow get them off my trash can?

  • IPhoto '08:  Emptying Trash Can Hangs Application - Must FORCE QUIT

    Hi there,
I currently have about 1700 photos in my iPhoto trash can. When i try to 'empty trash', i am prompted with the confirm message, to which i reply "OK" ......... and that's IT! It hangs.
I have no choice but to 'force quit', as it is 'not responding'.
I did find a topic about this exact problem, but it was for iPhoto 6. I recommends holding down the Command and Option keys, opening iPhoto, then 'rebuilding the iPhoto Library database'. I am using iPhoto '08.. so i wasn't sure that that option would be still valid.
Can anybody help me get those photos out of my trash can??

Hi iWoman, and welcome to  Discussions.
This is the panther forum iWoman, but that shouldn't matter.
...recommends holding down the Command and Option keys, opening iPhoto, then 'rebuilding the iPhoto Library database'. I am using iPhoto '08.. so i wasn't sure that that option would be still valid.
It is still valid, so give it a try.
+In iPhoto ’08, you can rebuild your library by holding down both the Command and Option keys on your keyboard while you launch iPhoto. Keep those keys pressed until you are asked if you want to rebuild your library.+
Then see how you go, remember that 1700 photos is a lot so give iPhoto some time to do all of that work.

  • Cannot empty trash can in iMac. Says I have no access to some of the items. Any ideas?

I created some files and folders on my iMac and deleted them. This time around when I try to empty the trash can via secure emptying it says I have no access to some of the items... Very strange. I had done same a while ago and worked with same files and folders. I restarted system. Same problem persisting. "Get Info" on files shows read and write. It is my own personal Mac... Any ideas? Thank you.

  • Emptying trash can

If I want to empty out my trash can, but am not quite certain about 1 item (for the time being), how can I keep the 1 item and get rid of everything else?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
One thing you can do is to open the Trash, select all the items (select Edit menu > Select All) and then, deselect the file you don't want to delete with the Command key. Then, just right-click the selected items and delete them from your Trash

  • Emptied trash--can I get my pictures back?!

    Help!
I didn't realize that some important photos had gotten into my iPhoto trash. To make more room, I emptied the trash without checking what was in it. Now my pictures are gone.
Is there some way to get them back? I saw in another post about "filesalvage." Would this work for me? I don't have an external drive to boot from and it costs $80. Is there anything else I can do. Would I likely get my pictures back if I use it?
    Thanks,
    Barbara

    Hello, Barbara,
Unfortunately, photos deleted from iPhoto Library are deleted from the hard drive when iPhoto's trash is emptied. You should have had a warning box pop up when you asked iPhoto to delete its trash.
The recovery program FileSalvage may help. Have a look at their web site: http://www.subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1
It appears that you can use the free download to see if your photos are recoverable, and then pay only if you want to retrieve them.

  • Won't shut down, won't empty trash, can't force quit, hangs forever

Hi all. Multiple problems here with MacBook Air. Can't even give you the specific OS because of the hanging problem. In brief the issues are:
    1. It won't shut down unless by using the power button.
    2. It won't empty the trash. Nor will it stop emptying the trash. All attempts to do so are met with either the warning that an application is in use (only the trash is in use) or it hangs
    3. It is impossible  to force quit. The usual keystrokes have no effect and in any case the third keystroke - usually esc- is shown under the Finder as an arrow comIng out of the upper left (open) corner of a semi-circle. Although this is a Spanish keyboard there is no corresponding key anywhere on the computer
    4. Any attempts to open any other application while engaging in the fruitless attempts to empty the trash are met with the dreaded beach all of death.
As a consequence I can only use the MacBook Air by not emptying an ever growing amount of trash. This can't possibly be good.

    David ...
Hopefully you can boot in Safe Mode so you can find out which OS X is installed. Troubleshooting advice can depend on that information.
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes much longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Then click the Apple menu  top left in the screen. From the drop down menu click: About This Mac
    Note the version number.
Then click Restart from the Apple () menu.
Post back with the OS X version please.

  • After emptying trash, can't follow instructions to reboot. Novice. Can someone help?

the following text appears when i follow the instructions, but cant find the apple logo and reboot that way.
"This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility."
This is a late 2009 IMac, and had over 500,000 files to be deleted (all in trash). After 30 hours (large photo files) it finished, and I am trying to clean the hard disk (I am an old PC user so i assume that is what you do)
Can you helpin fixing the hard disk?
    Thanks

First before you do anything back up your computer using Time Machine or create a bootable clone.
The Apple logo is in the upper left of your display. Restart the machine, when you hear the start-up tone hold down the Option key and select the Recovery Partition. Then open Disk Utility, highlight your internal HD and then run Repair Disk 2-3 times. If errors continue you have a damaged HD that needs to be replaced.

  • Cannot empty trash: "The operation can't be completed because the item ...

I've been having trouble emptying the trash. I get the following error, "The operation can’t be completed because the item "_file name_" is in use."
I've tried unlocking the files, but the unlock doesn't seem to stick.
I'm not sure if this is related, but a couple of months ago, I had a repair done and since then some of my software have required me to enter my license information again; apparently it looked as if I was running the programs on a different machine.
    Anyone have tips/solns?

    Thank you!
I ended up sticking the startup disc in, restarting while holding down the "c" key, and "using the Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs function of the Reset Paswoord function of the Utilities menu."
It worked perfectly; I now have an empty trash can.

  • Unable to empty trash in verizon cloud

The trash is using 2.4GB of storage in verizon cloud.  Whenever I attempt to empty trash can it gives me an internal server error and doesn't delete it.  Any workaround or way to get a trouble ticket opened?

        Hello TinyBurrito,
We're here to help get your Verizon Cloud working again! I'm sorry you're having trouble removing items from the trash folder. If you attempt to delete individual items, are you able to do that? When did you first attempt to empty the trash can?

  • Empty trash shortcut

I cannot use the "shortcuts" for empty trash & move to trash.
I can see the shortcut is, but it is not working.
    What should I do?

There's a new option in "Finder" > "Preferences" (⌘,) under the "Advanced" tab, for "Empty trash securely". If that option is selected, the usual keyboard combination will invoke "secure empty Trash" instead of the standard empty Trash.
However, note that unlike Tiger or Panther, "secure empty Trash" itself in Leopard is somewhat insecure. In the past, if it failed, the file remained in the "Trash" making it obvious that it did not work. In Leopard, under some circumstances, "secure empty Trash" can fail silently, yet the file is removed from the "Trash", i.e. it is insecurely deleted. Unbeknownst to the user, sensitive information could be left in a recoverable state on the hard drive.
So I wouldn't trust the feature at all in its current state.

I have an iMac purchased in May 2011.  OSX Lion 10.7.3.  I deleted backup file from the external hard drive which operates from Time Machine.
Now, the trash can will not empty some of the files deleted from the backup harddrive.
The trash contains-- File folder: "Core Services" which contains a locked file: "boot.efi".
    It will not delete.
How do I get the trash can empty of these files?

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?
