The items in the trash are off of the external drives. Please help, my trash can overfloweth!

Have you tried unmounting and disconnecting the drives, then emptying trash?

  • Possible solution for Empty Trash crashing

iPhoto continues to crash on me when emptying trash. I would think Apple could have fixed this by now, but I found something that works MOST of the time. After sending pics to trash, I open trash, move the scaling slider to smallest possible image, and then empty trash. Doesn't always work on the first try, but results are better than constantly restarting and emptying trash from normal views.

Replying to my own post? OK, I fixed my connectivity problem and did not need to uninstall iTunes. Originally I'd installed via System Update and had the aforementioned problem. So...I then downloaded iTunes directly from Apple and ran the installer...over top of my existing 8.2.1. When I did this I noticed that "custom" install includes two components. There's iTunes and there is mobile device somethingorother. By default they were both checked but I don't remember if that was the case with the install via System Update. It may have been but I hadn't chosen "custom." So...voila...now my iTouch connects and I didn't even have to restart the computer, let alone uninstall iTunes. Your mileage may vary but I'd suggest this reinstall as an easy first step if your Mac won't recognize your iTouch after installing iTunes from System Update.

  • IPhoto 6 Empty Trash Crashing Issue (Resolved?)

Having suffered from this for months now, I am still no closer to solving this issue. I believe I have done most things suggested here with varying degrees of partial sucess. Have not re-installed 6.0 or gone back to 5.0.
Can anyone offer anything new to try and resolve this or just sit back and wait for Apple to do something. Any advise appreciated.

    Hi Kevin,
I don't have any definite resolution for you, but here is another thread I can refer you to:

"I spoke with Apple just now (Apple Care) They said I-photo will not work right with photos on an external drive (I don't know where we are going to store the 250,000 photos it says it will work with). So here is what we did
    1. Place my I photo library back in my home folder in the picture folder
    2. Open I-photo and you will be asked to find the photo library, mine still crashed so on to step 3
    3. Restarted MAC in Safe mode by holding down the shift key after the restart chimes and releasing it after the Apple and the little spinning gear icon showed up.
    4. log into the account in safe mode.
    5. open I-photo and delete the files from the file menu it worked for me 8000+photos gone
    6. restart in normal mode and try I-photo again, and it still works"

  • IPhoto6 Empty Trash Crashes iPhoto

I've been cleaning out my iPhoto Library (from within iPhoto) and have over 600 photos in the iPhoto Trash. When I select Empty Trash from the iPhoto window, iPhoto unexpectedly quits. I seem to be unable to clear out my iPhoto Trash. Any suggestions? - Peter.

    Well, I tried this procedure:
    1. Call library
    2. Use slide rule to minimize picture size
    3. Select photos to delete
    4. Use >Back-Key< to move to trash
    5. Click and activite trash
    6. Use slide rule to increase size of all pictures
    7. Important: Use slide rule to minimize size of all pictures to lowest size
    8. Klick and activite trash and
    9. Use >ctrl-key< and klick on mouse
    10. choose >empty trash< this way, but stay on >ctrl-key<
    11. trash is empty (work for bunches of picts of about 40-50;didn`t go for more)
    12. after half a sunday experimenting I was happy but depleted too

I've used the Disc Utility and even Drive Genius but it does not solve the problem.

  • IPhoto 6 Still Crashing when Emptying Trash

Even after following Apple's advice to rebuild this and rebuild that and reinstall and delete preferences, etc., etc., iPhoto crashes when trying to empty trash of certain files, especially those imported with previous versions of iPhoto. Never have a problem with files imported using ver 6. I now have many files with no images, the file names.
Apple, this can't just be happening to me.

  • Computer stalling between transfers & emptying trash

I'm trying to organize my external hard drives by moving data around.  If I copy too many GB's at a time the transfer, not the computer, freezes.  No matter how long I leave it there, it will just stall a X amount of data transferred & won't move.  Now I'm trying to transfer small amounts at a time, but when I'm done copying from one location to the new one, I send the old one to the trash, but now there's too much data in my trash can, that I try & empty it and it stops as well, or most of the time, never gets out of the preparing to delete phase.  And if I try to stop the process, it gets stuck on stopping, won't let me restart the computer & I have to manually turn it off & back on.  And some of the large folders in the trash don't give me the put back option so I can try & do smaller amounts at a time.  And I know cutting & pasting from one location to another might be easier, but I don't trust it with these problems.  And when I try to get the folder info, to make sure the old & new locations are the same size so I can delete the old one, it takes forever, if at all just to calculate the size of the folder.  It's also sometimes been getting stuck on the little rainbow colored wheel at times, where it moves, I can move the folders that are open, but can't do anything else.  I'm more used to PC's, so I don't think that if something moves it's freezing, but perhaps that IS freezing for a Mac? If anyone has any info on how to fix this I'd greatly appreciate it.  Thanks

    Hey Dennis,
Appriciate the advice, but no, they have both only ever been used on my Mac Mini & I ran the Mac Install driver on both hard drives.  I'm aware of the different formats as I've tried connecting hard drives from my PC before.  And though they show up, it didn't let me move anything on or off.  My problem is, though I'm able to successfully copy the files/folders from one external drive to another, if I try to do too many GBs at once it gets stuck & doesn't finish, or sometimes even start the process.
    1. Sorry, what is "Mac Install drive" do you mean Disk Utility or something else?
    2. What exactly is the Partition Map Scheme (MS-DOS, Apple or GUID) and Format (FAT-32, or Mac OS Extended) of those drives?
    3. What if any messages are you getting, when you try to copy or empty trash?

I've actually copied everything I need to for now, my bigger problem is that I can't empty the trash.  I'm assuming it's a related problem though, that it's trying to delete too much at once.  And like I said, I've tried the 'Put Back' option, to delete smaller amounts at a time(just as I've had to with transfers), but it doesn't list that as an option on a couple of the biggest folders.  Any other ideas on what could be causing or how to fix the problem?

  • Emptying Trash makes Snow Leopard crash.

    Hi,
When I attempt to empty my trash bin my iMac crashes and I have to hold the power button to restart: http://i56.tinypic.com/2vwe7ac.jpg
These files I'm trying to empty from my trash bin were on my external hard drive if that helps in anyway. I tried using "MainMenu" to see if I could empty the trash that way but once again my iMac crashed.
When I click empty trash the crash happens straight away so it doesn't even get a chance to delete some files first.
Has anyone come across this problem before? If I eject my external drive my trash bin is empty. Once it's plugged back in, all the files are back.
    Thanks for any help.

The first thing I'd do is to run a Disk Utility "repair disk" operation on that external drive. If that doesn't help, then if you're willing to use Terminal to fix the problem, use these commands, where "xyz" is the name of the external drive and your user number is presumed to be 501:
    cd /Volumes/"xyz"/.Trashes/501
    ls
(You should now see the files you can't delete. If you don't, do not proceed! If you see any error messages, don't proceed.)
    rm -rfi *
(The "i" switch tells the command to inquire about deleting each file. Without that switch, the "rm" command is extremely dangerous. With the switch, it's only slightly less so. After each deleting inquiry, press the letter "y" without the quotes and press "return". If you see a message about permissions, there's a variation of the "rm" command that can fix that, but it also makes it more dangerous.

  • IPhoto  7.1 Crashes when emptying Trash!!!

iPhoto 7.1 chronically crashes when emptying trash ..............any thoughts ? I have reinstalled and thrown out the com.iphoto.plist more than once but it still happens.

So I went into a guest account and was able to empty the trash..
    In that case try the following;
    Trouble Shooting Preferences
Go to HD/Users/Your_name/Library. Move the Preferences folder (in its entirety) to the Desktop and make a second copy of it so you have Copy A and B. Now try the the process again and determine if problem is fixed.
If the problem IS fixed, then go to the new Prefs folder that the OS will have created and open it up.
Open Copy B on the Desktop and select all of the items inside. Drag them into the open new library folder. When the Copy window comes up check the Apply to All check box and then click on the Don't Replace button as seen here. That will keep the new files created and bring back all of the others.
If the problem is NOT fixed, trash the new Prefs folder and move the intact Copy A folder back to the Library folder .
    Do you Twango?
It may be a bad preference file other than iPhoto's.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Iphoto crashing on empty trash, reopen and the trash is still full...

i've got about 6000 pics in my trash in iphoto, and when i tell it to empty the trash, it hangs, and then unexpectedly quits. when i reopen it the trashed photos are still there and it asks me to rebuild the thumbnail cache.
i'm trying to trim the fat off my system so i can do a back up. as i'm about to blank my system drive and start fresh. any other iphoto friendly back up tips would be nice, i've got about 15000 pics, and making dvds or exporting everything is a massive chore.
also, have i lost my marbles or is there no longer a search function in the forums?

    austin m
I'm happy to report that your marbles are reasonably intact: the search of the fora has been turned off because the iPhone users, apparently a slow bunch, are overloading the system and this is one of the measures to keep the system flowing until they surge passes.
No, not an especially bright solution, I agree.
Anyway... Go to iPhoto -> Preferences -> General and uncheck 'Show Item Counts'. This often helps with this trashing crash.
Otherwise, the workaround is to restore the pics to you library and trash them in smaller groups.

  • Empty trash = iPhoto crash ???

    Hey all,
When I delete pictures from iPhoto, they go to the iPhoto trash can. When trying to empty the trash can, nothing happens for 2 sec and then it just shuts down. After that I get a message saying that it closed unexpectedly and I can choose CLOSE, REPORT or REOPEN. I tried it all and nothing works. I just crashes each time.
    Anyone had this too?
Another one: can you tell iPhoto to just change the image and not make a duplicate in a modified folder? This is taking up HD space at a very fast rate...
    Thanks,
    Bjorn

    Bjorn:
Regarding the duplicates: no, you can't have iPhoto just modify the original file and not have a modified version. That because if you crop a photo for a 4 x 6 image and then want a 5 x 7 at a later time, without being able to revert to the original for that second crop, you'd lose considerable image quality each time. You always want to have that original file available to go back to. It's just good image management practice.
Regarding the Trash crash, most of the cases I remember were from those trying to delete large numbers of files at once. They solved the problem by removing those files from the trash and then deleting a smaller number at a time. By smaller for those cases was around 50. It doesn't sound like that's a factor in your problem.
I suggest you try rebuilding the library as follows: launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select all options except the "orphaned" file one. See if that will help. Also download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administartive name in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field. This may be overkill but it might have something to do with it. Won't hurt to run it anyway.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. Can't empty trash in OSX10.6.8. Used Trashit unsucessfully. If I run sudo rm -ri ~/.Trash, terminal crashes. PowerMac G-5

This should do the job without all the Ys. BUT you must be 100% certain you have entered the command EXACTLY as written below. One typo and you could lose all the data in your user. Copy/paste only and TRIPLE check it's entered properly in Terminal. The -f option, instead of the -i option will force empty and delete immediately. No questions. (rm is remove/delete, -r is everything inside the folder, -f is force, no questions)
    sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash
There is a single space between sudo and rm
                                               "          rm and -rf
                                               "        -rf and ~/.Trash
    NO SPACES IN  ~/.Trash
It may take a while, depending on how many items are being deleted. You'll know it's done when you get a new $ sign prompt.
