Empty Trash with Time Machine

Time Machine backed up some files I do not want backed up. I dragged them to the trash and tried secured delete, option delete and tried "chflags -R nouchg " in terminal and the trash will not empty. I cannot drag these files anywhere.

Recovering Files in Trash with Time Machine?

Hey guys,
So I have some files that I desperately need to recover that I put in my trash a while ago. I am certain they were still in there when I recently backed up my Macbook Pro to Time Machine, but then a week later I accidentally emptied the trash, forgetting I'd left valuable files in there.
I've since tried to search through my time machine backup, but however cannot find a folder that contains the files anywhere. I tried making hidden files, but still can't find a folder that would contain the files that were in my trash.
Is there any way to recover files that were in the trash in a time machine backup?
Further details (may not all be necessary, just in case):
Computer: MacBook Pro (13-inch, mid 2012)
OSX: Was running Mavericks at time of aforementioned events, now running Yosemite
Type of Files Trying To Find: Videos
Any suggestions?

Time Machine doesn't back up the Trash. You would have to recover the files from wherever they were before you put them in the Trash.

Recovering emptied trash without Time Machine?

I had a .wav file in the trash that I accidentally deleted. This happened a few hours ago. I do not have time machine set up. Is there any possible way to recover this deleted file?
Is there also a way to make time machine work with an external 70gb hard drive? It says that the HD is not large enough.
I'm mainly concerned with the wav file though. Is there a way to recover the file at all? Thank you for your help.

How do I retrieve a file from Trash using Time Machine in Mavericks?

Is it even possible to retrieve a file from Trash from a Time Machine backup? Does Time Machine even back up the Trash? I've been told a total restore from a Time Machine backup will put the past Trash back on the Mac, but what if I just want to restore an individual file?
Shortly after emptying my Trash on my Mac (10.9.4) for the first time in weeks, I realized I needed one of the files I'd just erased. Trying to retrieve with Time Machine was not fruitful, however, because I couldn't find the file on any of the past backups using the normal Enter Time Machine interface. However, I know it would have been in the Trash during all of the most recent backups.
So I researched how to find the backups of Trash with Time Machine, but I think all of the solutions I found on various online forums were pre-Mavericks and do not seem to work now. I've basically tried 2 things:
Show Trash in Finder using the Terminal command: open ~/.Trash
It shows the hidden Trash folder in Finder, located in Macintosh HD/Users/User. For easy access, I added the .Trash folder to the Finder Sidebar. But I can't get to it in the backups. The Trash shortcut in the Finder Sidebar is always grayed out in the old backups using the Time Machine app. And it does not show up in ~ when looking through the backups.backupdb folder on my external HD.
I also tried the Terminal command to show all hidden files in Finder: defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
But while many hidden files do suddenly appear in Finder, curiously, the User's .Trash folder is not one. This is true for the Finder of the Mac, the backups.backupdb folder on the External HD, and Time Machine app.

How do I retrieve a file from my backup in Time Capsule?
It depends on the type of file that you are trying to retreive.
In general.....
Open Time Machine by clicking on the clock icon on the dock
Wait a few minutes for Time Machine to fully load
Use the timeline at the far right of the window to go back in time to a date when the file was still on your Mac
Click that date
Navigate using the Finder interface to locate the file that you want
Click on the file to highlight it
Click Restore at the lower right of the window to be brought back to the present

Unable to empty trash with data from Time Machine Drive

Hi there,
Cause of the current issue:
I am hoping the experts can help me with this one. I have an external hard drive which is used for my Time Machine Backups. Recently there has been an error on the backup to this drive on occasion. This error only occurs when the system does the back up, and appears only periodically, never when I do the back up manually. One of the threads I read to solve this issue is to delete some older backup files from your time machine drive, and all is good. This worked for awhile.... but now a new problem:

I have been able to empty all of the trash save one particular set of folders. So the trash always appears with content.
The structure of the trash content appears as such...

The library folder always has the time/date of the last time I tried to empty the trash.
What I have tried:
1. I have tried to empty the trash Securely. No good.

3. I have tried this terminal command : sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/* with no success
4. I have tried just plain old Empty Trash. But I get the message "This operation cannot be completed because the item 'FK6T0KGc9y4KBB' is in use.
Any thoughts, recommendations?

FCP X Crash. Restored with Time Machine, but Timeline still empty.

I just started with FCP X (Trial Version).
After 2 days of hard work I had a crash (spinning wheel, forced closing).
The Timeline is empty now.
I restored the folders "Final Cut Projects" & "Final Cut Events" completely with Time Machine, but no matter how far I go back, the timeline remains empty.
(event and imported media are visible, though)
Does FCP X save project data anyplace else on my mac ???

So under the partition tab, I should reformat to one partition, reinstall Leopard, and see what happens from there? Selectively restore applications, music, pictures to my system once it's reinstalled and properly updated? Anything else I may need to do or restore?
Why not reformat under the erase tab, zero out the disk, and reinstall? Any difference?
Just a little worried and unsure is all. If it's a hardware thing, I can accept that and take it in to be serviced. But, if it is a software issue, I don't want to do any irreparable harm during the erase-and-reinstall process. Just want to make sure I get it right.

No. When you removed the photos via the finder you damage the library. Photos should always be removed from the library using iPhoto, never with the Finder.
If you have a Time Machine backup of the library from before you deleted the photos you can restore the library to the Desktop and export that album from it to import into your current library.
It's been too long to be able to try one of the file recovery applications. You sure to have overwritten those files with new files since them.

Don't underestimate how amazing Time machine is --
After the initial backup, it will wirelessly backup your system every hour -- it only takes a few minutes and basically you are unaware of it even happening except for the sync icon turning in your menu bar.
Acccidently erase an e-mail?...Go back a day, and viola it's back.
Throw out a bunch of photos from a disc and then empty the trash? Go back a few days and there it is.
I find I use it far more than I ever thought I would -- and ironically, because Macs basically just plain old work, I've never in 8 years had to go look for a backup of files or anything that accidently disappeared the way things do on Windows based computers.

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight as described here. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can also use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

Restore exchange account with time machine

Hello,
Using Mail under Maverick, when making a rules and apply it, this rules doesn't works like I expect, and suppress about 400 hundred mails in my inbox (account exchange 365).
I go to TimeMachine to restore the Inbox like 30 minutes before. I see all the losted mails, but when I clik on Restore, a message say something like "restoring box Outlook 365"... and nothing... My inbox stay empty !
In fact, if it's not possible to restore an Mail Exchange Account with Time Machine, it should send me an alert, or propose to restore the mails to a temporary local box.
Could you help me ?

Yes, I have a suggestion. Im not in front of the Mac where I have had the problem, but I remember that at the bottom of the "On my Mac" mail folders, there is a new folder created by Time Machine. In this folder, the restored send and received mailbox !

New to Mac, Help with Time Machine! Partition External HDD or not?

I need help with time machine
I wanted to know how time machine works and what all does it back up?
I have 2 hard drives one is of 1TB and one is of 320gb
In the 1TB hard drive i store all my music videos and work stuff it is windows formatted
The 320gb hard drive is mac formatted and I was thinking of making a partition on it one with 250gb for time machine and the remaining 70 gb for mac softwares and files. The ssd of my mac has a capacity of 256gb. I have read for time machine you need at least 2x the space of your ssd on your external hard drive but i don't understand if my ssd is only 256 and can store files worth 256gb why do i need double the space? Secondly if I choose to use the complete 320 gb for time machine will that be okay or even if i choose to partition it to 250gb for time machine will that be fine too? Or will I need to format my 1TB hard disk out of which currently only 300 gb is empty and partition that to 500 gb for time machine?
I'm really confused every tells me to use time machine but do I need it? And what does it exactly do?

The reason that you want a partition (or drive) of 2-3 times the size of your boot drive for Time Machine is so that you can keep backups further back than just the current boot drive state - for that you'd need to make a clone of the drive rather than using Time Machine (see -> http://pondini.org/TM/Clones.html).

Note that you can't use Time Machine to backup a Windows partition.

Restoring with Time Machine help!!!

I have searched for many hours for an answer to my problem to no avail. I have seen multiple discussions on here about this issue, but none seem quiet the same.
I use an Intel iMac, 500GB, Snow leopard, and all the most current updates.
While trying to cmd+q Safari from the ESPN fantasy page I received the spinning rainbow ball. I gave it about ten minutes to quit and nothing. I tried to key a force quit and nothing. So I then did a hard reset pressing the power button. Once it restarted the screen froze on the grey startup and seconds later gave me the Folder with a question mark icon flashing. I found the Snow Leopard install disc and put it in to restart. I restarted and held "c" while doing so.
Mac OS X Installer appears and I follow it to a point where I can select >utilities and select disk utility or restart from back up.
I first tried to use my Time Machine backups that are stored on a Lacie 1TB external, but I receive a message that "this disk does have enough space." I tried selecting all the way back a year ago when I started using it to restore. No luck.
Next I tried going to the >utilities >disk utility selection and it only shows the install cd and a hard disk labeled "Media" but in the Total cpacity: it reads 0 Bytes. I don't know where to go from there.
Now I am am deleting the back ups from August 1, 2010 and before to try and free up space and attempt a restore with Time Machine.
Does anyone have any ideas or solutions or anything. I have 120GB of music, CS5, Logic Pro 9, Office, and many other programs all at risk. Yes, I paid for all of them. I just don't have time to spend installing it all again, especially when some of my work depends on them.

I have already erased some of the backups from August 1 2010 and before. I still have from this past sunday, 21st until August 2nd. Please elaborate how it will corrupt the backups. I plugged the external into my macbook pro and trashed those backups mentioned before.
The message you were getting was that there wasn't enough space on the internal (since it showed zero), not the backups.
If you did that via the Finder or Terminal, they may be corrupted.
Unfortunately, Apple doesn't do a very good job of warning folks not to do that.
You shouldn't have to delete things there, since Time Machine will do it automatically when the disk gets full. But if you want or need to, you can do it via Time Machine without harm. See #12 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
So, repair them per #A5 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). If they're ok, or can be repaired, your best bet when you get your Mac back is to do a full system restore, per #14 in the FAQ.

Try getting the free "Preference Manger" applicaiton from Digital Rebellion (dot com). Use it to trash the FCP X preference files. See if that helps.
Also, on the new Mac, go into the App Store, under the Store menu, make sure you are signed in.
