I started to have a problem to empty the trash, is taking longer than normal to empty. This started two months ago. Any ideas of what coud it be?

Disk ultility taking longer than normal

I just got an external hard drive. I want to convert it to Mac os x journaled so I can run back ups on it. I clicked erase and convert and for the past hour it has been "unmounting" the disk. It is showing he striped white and blue bar in stead of the solid blue. The application is responding fine. Just wondering if that's normal not to see the solid blue progress bar for so long. Also wondering how long it will take to erase and convert (there is nothingon it)? -thanks.

Hit the Skip button if there is one, if not then you may have to wait it out.
To only reset the Partition Map Scheme and Format for OS X without erasing the drive.
1. Highlight the new HD in the list of drives and select the Partition tab.
2. Under Volume Scheme select 1 Partition and click on the Options... button.
3. Select GUID Partition Table in the drop down window and click OK.
4. Set the Format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), name it and click the Apply button.

Why is the trash taking so long to empty?

I recently migated my music files to iCloud through Match tumes and have put my music lrary folder in the Trash. I then emptied the trash and there were almost 10k files to delete. The first 9,000 or so went fairly nornal as afar as delete speed, but starting at file 1028, it's now taking up to an hour per file deleted.
I've tried a bunch of things including a PRAM reboot, but no luck so far. The files were on my external fire-wire drive. suggestions? Thanks!

Select  ▹ Force Quit... from the menu bar, then select Finder and press return. From the Finder menu bar, select Finder ▹ Preferences ▹ Advanced and uncheck the box labeled Empty Trash securely. My question is what is the open source or terminal language code used to tell my mac to look in the DVD rom drive for startup info? I know that im not the only person in this world who has deleted the "PRIVATE" folder and emptied the trash so it no longer exists on their machine...
That said theres gotta be a common fix for a Power PC G4 that has the OS X dvd in the rom drive but wont look to it to reinstall the vital contents of the PRIVATE folder.
Once again there is not a copy of this file or its contents in the recycle bin...
Also rebooting the machine , pressing and holding the letter C does not prompt the machine to look to the dvd rom drive.
I was reinstalling pro tools and figured I would make some room by cleaning my computers HD...

Okay sorry it took forever to respond... But for a while there I gave up on this computer!!!!
Money's been tight lately , so taking it in to a professional was not yet an option... though I did consider it eventhough.
Anyway long story short im glad I didnt spend any money because I already had all the tools necessary to fix this issue but was going about it in the wrong way. Okay so here is my scenario and the breakdown... Though this may not fix the issue for everyone :( which *****... But I know we all will have different circumstances.
Anyway here we go...
Okay so first things first.... Years ago I purchased the OS 10.5.1 disk ... So that has always been in my possession!!!!
I realize that some may not have a disk to reflash your OS to your hard drive... but if you do your in luck.
2ndly ... I had an external harddrive with all of my itunes downloaded music so it was more than okay with me to delete my primary HD because all the important stuff could either be copied over or repathed to be located.

Okay so now the SOLUTION!!!!
By trial and error , and pure boredom I opened up my computer to clean the inside...
AND
"Disconnected the primary HD"
and just because ....... REBOOTED my computer. Just to see what it would do.
Upon restart and though it looked like it would repeat its usual cycle...
About 1 minute in to that process my computer froze for about 2 seconds and flashed to the OS installation screen.
Mind you I havent seen this screen yet... Probably hasnt been since I installed the OS years ago.
After a bit of trial and error...
I decided to tell my computer to startup from the OS 10.5 disk located in my dvd rom drive and restarted once again...
this setting is under
Utilities / startup disk
After a little more trial and error ... I realized that I could reconnect the primary HD , restart the machine and return to the OS installation menu.
So upon this discovery
I went to the Disk Utility located under Utilities
Highlighted my primary HD located in the left hand column
Once highlighted ...
In the heading section on the right I selected the option
Erase
in which I erased My current OS on my primary HD ...
I used the first option in the list under security... Because it seemed like the least invasive and would take the least amount of time to see if this process would actually work.
I FORGOT to add something...
Another reason why I deleted my primary HD!!!!!
I forgot to say that it WOULD NOT!!!!! Show up in the STARTUP list as an option...Even After multiple reboots....
But like clockwork... Once I deleted its name IT SHOWED UP as an option!!!!
So back to the next step...
I returned to the STARTUP option under utilities ... And was then able to see MY primary HD now as a startup option...
But ofcourse it had no name because it we previously erased it.
So when Clicking my newly erased HD ... I was almost immediately prompted to REINSTALL the OS ...
Which said it would take about 57 minutes ... But I believe was alot less...
My issue was resolved ... My computer then stated the install was SUCCESSFUL!!!!!!! :))))))))))) lol ;)
It was like I was setting up for the first time ;) asking for my registration info...
The dilemma of deleting the private folder and emptying the trash is finally over resolved. Done ... and no extra money spent!!!!!!!!!
Its really crazy that the information for such a simple thing is not readily available. Especially being such a simple fix.
I know im not the only person who's had this issue , because i've seen numerous posts with similar wording.
I also know I wont be the last person to have this issue... So I hope this synopsis makes sense.
-------One more time the fix------
*Insert your OS dvd into your dvd rom drive.
*Unplug your primary HD or corrupted startup disk
*Reboot your machine...
Upon restart your primary HD will not be recognized...
* you will then be prompted to select your language.
Once selected
*Click Utilities/startup... Highlight the the selection that refers to the OS dvd located in the dvd rom drive.
* Click restart...
!!!!!!!!!!Be sure to reconnect your Primary HD Before your computer restarts and you hear the chime!!!!!!!!
If you do not replug your HD before the chime it will not be recognized.
In that case restart again.
Upon restart once again
*Choose your language...
*Click Utilities / disk utility
In the left column select and
*Highlight your HD ...
Then towards the top portion / center of the page
*Click the heading Erase
Then on the page toward the bottom
*Click security options
This will then provide erase options.
I USED THE FIRST OPTION
"Dont erase data"...
*click OK
* click erase...
Once erased which should take a few seconds
*Cancel the disk utility...
* Click Utilities / startup
And your newly erased HD should now appear in the list.
* Select your drive from the list by highlighting
It should no longer have a name.
*Once selected, you will then be prompted to restart and install the OS to your newly erased HD...
Thats it!!!!
Once everything reinstalls re-add your personal info or registration info and you are up and running.

"Connecting to the network is taking longer than usual" message after I wake my computer from sleep

Connecting wirelessly after waking computer from sleep yields the message "connecting to the network is taking longer than usual". This only occurs after sleep, it also does not allow it to autoconnect like when starting the computer up. All
drivers seem to be up to date and happens at more than one wireless location, home and school. I have a windows 7 opperating system.

I just had the same problem with my HP Pavilion dv6 laptop.
I was able to resolve the problem by uninstalling my Intel Centrino Wireless Network adapter (but I did not delete the driver). I did this by right-clicking My Computer, Manage, Device Manager, expanded the Network Adapters group, and right-click the
Wireless Network Adapter and click Uninstall. I recommend that you reboot once this is done.
My laptop now connects to Wifi immediately after waking the laptop from sleep.
This is what finally resolved my problem. Sony Vaio with 64bit Windows 7. Wireless would sometimes take up to 3 minutes after Windows started to connect. After following these instructions, I first removed all wireless networks, then from the System Control
Panel I deleted (along with the driver) the Wireless Adapter. I then installed a fresh driver directly from the maker (not OEM).
I now connect to Wifi immediately after booting or waking from hibernation.

It seems that somehow I no longer have permission to empty the trash...

Recently, I have run into a problem in that I can't empty the trash because, according to the pop up, I do not have permission to delete some items that are in the trash. ***?
The items I currently can't delte were put there from a jump (flash) drive. Is this the issue? I didn't have that probelm before upgrading to Lion. How can I get permission to empty the trash so that these things come off the flash drive and the trash get emptied?

In the case of the parenthisis, my name is showing as my actual name--although the last letter of name has an s added to it, whcih sometimes shows up as a dollar sign, and the password in parenthisis is the correct password.
Still nothing as far as getting the file out of the trash
Could the 'unlink file' string have something to do with OS X doesn't remove the file totally from the flash drive until it's been erased in the trash And if it isn't getting it erased in the trash, it won't be erased on the flash drive. It should be noted that within the flash drive is an unhighlighted file named .Trashes.
Really confused and frustrated at this point.

I have been through and deleted as much as I can, transferred movies to an external drive and emptied the trash, but it keeps coming up as full again after a while even though I haven't loaed anything else on......what do I do? It sounds like a runaway process is filling up your volume.
Boot in safe mode. First, disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including your login items.
Use a tool such as the one linked below to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space:

I tried to empty the trash, full of back up file from my hard disk and it just says: "The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8003)"

I have an external hard disk of 319.73 GB that I use as back up memory and where I put all the movies and other files that I can't leave on the computer as they occupy too much memory space . One day I was deleting all the previous dated back up to have more space on it , but had to stop the trash for doing it cause it was taking too long and now every time that I try to empty the trash it just says "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8003)" and even if I press CONTINUE it won't empting it . I'm not really pratical with this things and I tried already to find out the solution here and on Google but apparently nobody ever had a similar error code and I don't know what else to do.
I've a MacBook Pro with a Mac OS X 10.6.8 Version.

Non-destructive editing is an important feature of iMovie HD 6.
iMovie preserves the entire copy of every clip you place into your movie in case you change your mind at a later stage.
So, if you have cut out one minute from a 45 minute clip, iMovie will have stored two complete copies of that clip. This is why is helps to set import as 3-5 minute clips rather than one huge chunk. As DV runs at 13GB per hour your project files can get very big.
One workaround is to complete the editing of a section of the movie, then export that to Quicktime: highlight the clip/s, choose Share-Quicktime, turn on Share selected clips only, and choose Full Quality from the pop-ip menu.
Once you have saved the stand-alone clip to your hard drive, you can re-import it into your project using the File/Import command, and delete the original long clip/s from the project.

Can not copy any file or empty the trash

I'm using a Macbook (white) with OSX 10.6.4 and am having an extremely annoying problem which has three symptoms:
1. I *can not empty the trash* (safely or not) at all.
2. I *can not copy any file*, anywhere.
3. I *can not move anything to the "Applications"* folder.
I try restarting the computer, repairing the permissions, running the latest version of Onyx and so on, but nothing works. I always get the following error message (when copying a file or emptying the trash)
"The operation can't be completed because you don't have the permission to access some of the items".
And this even though I repaired the permissions three times today.
To be honest, this makes my Mac pretty useless, and is very frustrating.
Can anybody help? I've browsed a lot of other threads about this, tried everything, but to no avail.
Come on, this is my first Mac, don't tell me I have to reinstall the OS from zero, Windows-style.

Those are the normal permissions but if you are logged in as admin, hit the unlock button and enter your password they should no longer be greyed out.
You can try chmoding them from root through the terminal if you are up for it. I'd also try booting up in SafeMode and seeing if that allows access.

Emptying the trash issue

My trash is empty. I throw 1 item in there and then empty the trash. It says it is emptying FOUR items. It takes a long time to empty the 1 item. After it empties and I verify it has no items in it, I do it again and the same thing happens. And it keep shappening over and over. What is going on with my trash and how do I fix it? It does NOT acknowledge the 3 extra items in it once the trash is deleted, but mysteriously puts in 3 extra items which can;t be seen when I go to do the next cleaning. What is going on????

Eric, thank you. This solved my problem of having the trash take forever to empty. The 4 files versus only 1 file problem however, kept showing up when I went to delete only 1 file in the trash.

Seventy One: You prompted me to realize there is an "Empty Trash" and a "Secure Empty Trash" toggle and when I switched it back to "Empty Trash", I no longer get the 4 files prompt (even though Secure Empty Trash has 3 extra files each time I empty it). The "Empty Trash" feature just empties it and is done with it. SO the answer to my problem ws a hybrid between both you and Eric.

Emptying the Trash causes Finder freeze

I recently added more RAM, installed a new hard drive and then upgraded the OS to Leopard. So this is my problem. When there are many files in the trash (2k or more) the emptying trash window comes up and shows as the files are deleted and then the window freezes. If I wait for several minutes, the Finder window disappears and then relaunches and the trash is empty. If I empty the trash when there are less than 2,000 files it empties like normal. I ran permissions, and verified the hard drive. All are normal with no errors. I also ran my virus checker but no viruses. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

First, if you have any third-party contextual menu items installed try removing them and restarting.
Try deleting the /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist preference file.
Try booting into safe mode to see if the problem persists.

If I empty the trash, will my iMac run any better?

And while we're at it... I heard there are two (2) ways to empty the trash? One is permanent and the other is just make-believe? What is all that about? I'd like to find ways to make my iMac run a little faster... like it did when I first got it LOL. That's probably impossible, but any tips would be appreciated.

Yes you can set it up in the Energy Saver Pane of System Preferences - actually, it would be good if you took at look at all the Preference Panes there; that is where you set up how you want a particular app to respond. So, back to the sleep issue: in your manual, it says to let it sleep if not in use unless you won't be using it for a while (exactly what is 'a while'?). In any case, there are two sets of opinions: one to follow Apple's suggestion and put it to sleep (it is good to let your display sleep to avoid image persistance) and the other (which I belong to): if you don't need it, turn it off (preserve natural resources). My own personal opinion is that if I start it up/shut it down once a day, that is not putting that much stress on it - but I'm sure there'll be an opposing opinion. I've done it my way since I started with my first Mac in 1995 with no apparent damaging effects. But, again, there are two sides to this issue, so this will be your own decision. In any case, you can leave it on if you wish, let it sleep, or shut it down. Shut down does have some advantages sometimes: it performs certain checks and sequences which can sometimes fix some odd behavior.
It is good to repair permissions after any software update or install - the last update 10.6.7 messed up a bunch of them. You do this by going to Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities), highlighting your drive and hit repair permissions (no need to verify first). As long as it says "permissions repair complete" at the end, you're good (do not worry about some recurring messages there which have been showing up since 10.6.6). Also good to know: you can verify your hard disk there - if needed. If it needs repair, Disk Utility can handle a simple repair, but you'll need to boot from your install disk or a bootable clone to do this.

I don't have permission to empty the trash securely.

The initial cause of the problem may be that accidentally dragged my downloads folder from the tool bar into the trash. I do not see the downloads folder in the trash. When I try to empty the trash, I see indication that many files are being deleted. I eventually get a message telling me that I do not have sufficient permission to empty the trash. My options are STOP or CONTINUE. Seems that no matter what option I choose, no more trash disappears. Please advise. Thanks in advance.

Repairing permissions is important, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two in Tiger, but much longer in Leopard.

If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

Once I enter password for myself (administrator) spinning takes longer than normal and doesn't log in but displays a no sign (circle w line through it) when attempting to login from guest account it takes me to screen that says that the computer will restart to a safe safari system for the guest user. I waited for a longer time and the grey denim screen comes up. By the apple in left upper corner it said I think LSA? Then safari menu bar.
