Emptying trash does not free up HD capacity

Hi there
I just posted a similar question about my SSD problem.  250gb total capacity.  Only found 120gb in files/folders/apps.  Should have 120-25gb free.  But instead I have 25gb free (and SHRINKING).
Everytime I use the trash, and empty, there is no INCREASE in capacity.  This does not make sense.  PS:  I have just had my SSD inspected by Genius Bar, and they created a new partition.  I reloaded my files (etc) from timemachine, and same problem.
Ouch!

  • Empty Trash does not delete photo from Masters File.  Why?

When I delete a photo and then empty the trash the file still remains in the Masters File in the iPhoto Library. This is concerning since these are large files that don't need to be there. Am I doing something wrong. How do I get rid of these unwanted picture files?

Make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select options #1, #2, #5 and #6.
    Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If you have a lot of photos that you've deleted and the Masters copy is still in the library Fix #3 may be the only one that will remove those rogue files from the library. You'll just have to check after running each.

  • Exfat drive does not free up space after deleting files

My external exfat formatted drive does not free up space after deleting files using a mac....however if I delete files using a PC, it will free up space.
I've even tried the *erase free space* using Disk Utility, but nothing.....
    Thoughts/Suggestions??

    Thanks for the suggestion.
I ran WhatSize and here is the result. Oddly, it says there is 40.2 GB used (in the top-left) which conflicts with the information directly below it: "Capacity 108 GB, Used 103GB, Available 4.27 GB". Not so helpful.
Disk Inventory X solved the problem, however. Much thanks! I wasted most of my weekend troubleshooting this sad issue. Anyway, Disk Inventory X revealed a bug where my external hard drive for photos was still appearing as a mounted volume, even though the HD was no longer connected. Freaky.
After moving it to the trash and deleting it, I've recovered the space.
Again, thanks! Contact me if you're curious about the details, as this might help you diagnose similar problems in the future.

  • I am getting disc full messages on my Mac, unable to empty trash because not enough space, how do I proceed or do I need to increase my 4gig of memory

I am getting disc full messages on my Mac, unable to empty trash because not enough space, how do I proceed or do I need to increase my 4gig of memory in which case how do I go about this process.

You are confusing RAM (Random Access Memory) with hard drive data storage space.
Your hard drive storage is getting too full if you can't empty your Mac's main trash.
Here are some general tips to keep your Mac's hard drive trim and slim as possible
You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your Mac's Trash icon in the Dock?
( as you mentioned, you can't empty this as your hard drive is too full.)
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
To find other large files, download an app called Omni Disk Sweeper.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

Tom at the Genius Bar told me that Option Delete would work. It does not.
I had to upgrade to iTunes 11.1.(I26) because it is required with OS7 on my iPod Touch (5th Gen). I have tried shutting down iTunes, then shutting down the entire system. This is the first in many visits that the Genius Bar gave me a solution that did not work.
This is a big awkward computer locked to my desk. I would rather not unlock it and then carry it through a shopping center to the Genius Bar if i can avoid oit.
When I installed iTunes 11.1, I discovered that Ihad to resubscribe to virtually all of the podcasts that I had previously been subscribed to. That was a surprise.

    Hello Achates:
I did not read the rather long post. If you wish to reinstall OS X 10.4, use your software install DVD. Backup is essential. To minimize your risk, I would use an archive and install:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
In that way, you will have a fresh copy of OS X and your current settings will be preserved.
Incidentally, I do not agree that the printer problem is best solved by reinstalling OS X. I have had HP printers for sometime and, on one occasion, had difficulty after an upgrade. HP technical support walked me through uninstalling all traces of the HP driver and then reinstalling.

  • Trash does not empty

    Hi
Hope you can help. I have a folder in trash (and a sub folder & html file) that I cannot get out of trash.
I have tried ctrl / Alt Empty Trash.
I have tried the program Trash it!, and no luck
I have done the reboot thing *** well - also tried cleaning cache / running Onyx in case that helped (you never know) - but it did not.
    Any ideas? Running 10.4.7
The file is showing in the .trash folder in Get Info.
The file is called Tiếng Việt.html (From Adobe uninstall).
    Cheers
    Jon

Restart with a Mac OS X installation CD or DVD and then use the Disk Utility on that disk to repair your hard disk; after this has been done, try emptying the Trash again.

I keep trying to empty trash, it seems to do something but the bin is still full.

Try Trash it!, it'll trash anything. I use it a lot to force trash those pesky PDF files.

  • Help needed: Disk space does not free up even after deleting files.

Background information for this problem: I have my iPhoto library on an external HD, and was importing files from that same drive into iPhoto, and began receiving messages that I was very low on disk space on my internal HD. From here, it seemed like iPhoto was using my boot drive for some kind of cache. Regardless of the actual reason, I began moving files from my internal HD to fix this problem temporarily (while I was importing).
At this point, I started fiddling with my files and found that no matter how many files I would delete from my HD, the available space in the finder would not free up. *At this point, I have less than 20GB on my HD, yet it says I have 1.23 GB available out of 108 GB.*
Here is what I have already tried to fix the problem, to no avail:
    a) Original user was using Filevault. I backed up all the files, created a new user without Filevault, and restored the files.
    b) Booted from CD and used Disk Utility to erase free space.
    c) Verified and fixed permissions
    d) Deleted all app and system caches (via CacheOut X)
    e) Fixed/Repaired all user/system preferences (via Preferential Treatment)
*Does anyone have any idea what's going on?*

  • Putting photos etc into trash does not clear space on hard drive

When I move photos etc into the trash there is no increase in available space on the hard drive.

If you've installed third-party software called "Disk Drill," I suggest you remove it according to the developer's  instructions. If you prefer to keep the software, refer to the developer for support. Otherwise, see below.
For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
              iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation—not the mythical 10%, 15%, or any other percentage. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Trash does not like a file

I am trying to empty the Trash with a .mov file that I created yesterday. When I try to empty the Trash, I get a opaque black screen that tells me in several languages that I need to shut down my computer, and the file stays in the Trash. I tried overwriting the file, but the same thing happens. I even tried changing the name and extention, but to no avail.
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    utbman-
    Bummer.
Select the file and do the "get info" thing and make sure that it is not locked.
Does the file play normally? Not that it should matter, but did you try the "empty trash securely" thing?

  • Finder requires password to delete files, Trash does not show deleted files. Please help me resolve.

Deleting folders/files causes the password pop up interface to appear, does not seem to matter where the file/folder is. After deleting, it should appear in the trash, but does not. Moving files is not affected, with the exception of moving files into Trash. This did not happen in the morning.
Accessing ~/.Trash gives following message "The folder “.Trash” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents." .Trash is hidden, and i can't view its permission from the Get info page.
I am the owner of the laptop, i don't understand why this is happening. The other thread with similar problems involved a software upgrade and had problems with moving files also, whereas my MBP was okay this morning, i didn't do anything else from then till now.
i did a ls -al ~ on the terminal, relevant lines as follows
    drwx------
    10 root  staff
    340 Jan 18 02:09 .Trash
compared to desktop, which i had no problems (yet, not sure)
    drwx------+
    30 Mac   staff
    1020 Jan 18 02:08 Desktop
i don't understand the notation, reading up about them does not clarify any more then to confuse me further.
My user is "Mac", ~/ goes to folder "Mac"
Please help, I have tried booting from save mode, and it is the same.

Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on solving Trash issues. You can also try using Trash It! 5.1 to fix the problem. Or you can try this:
Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder and paste the following at the prompt:
        sudo rm -Rf ~/.Trash
Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted. It will not echo to the screen. Press RETURN again.
(Should anyone tell you this is dangerous or unnecessary, please ignore the comment.)

  • My Secure Empty Transh does not work, How can I fix it?

When I open Trash, it displays all the files that are there to be deleted. However, when I select from Actions the Secure Empty Transh, the computer launches the application to empty trash, it asks me if I want to delete unlocked items or all items. Independently of what option I select, the program closes and all the files are where they were before. Any ideas on what to do?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • Empty trash, finder not working

I have a imac G5 w i sight. I just installed leopard and when it came to the reg screen on the internet. it could not find the internet, so i quit. now when i try and start the mac the screen comes up but "finder" not running. other programs run. I tryed re-installing it and it needed 11 gb room. not usually a problem, but i could not empty trash. is there a way to fix this problem.

Hold down the option key and try again. Your task will be a lot faster if you remove from the Trash all items that don't really need to be deleted securely.

  • IE 10/11 does not free up, hangs - unkillable process

    Hi!
I have a problem with IE since about 2 years now. IE does not close/exit correctly, i have always to do a system reboot!
IE 9 worked fine, never had a problem with this version. Since v10 and now v11 i cannot close IE completely. If i close the open tabs and exit IE, the program window closes, but there are still one or more 'iexplore.exe *32' processes running in the background
(with massive RAM consumption - non growing). I always try to kill the open process(es), with no luck, it will not exit! I can restart IE again and can use it, but after exiting the hanged processes are still running. So i have always to do a system

I tried following things till now to get rid of the problem (nothing worked!):

  • Secure Empty Trash Setting not working HELP!!!

Im trying to turn off the secure empty trash I dont know how it got turned on
    but its not working
Ive tried going to Finder > Preference > advanced > uncheck the secure empty box
but it doesnt work it keeps asking me if im sure to delete the item
I dont want secure empty trash i like keeping the files for a while just in case
    HELP please

Click on the item in the Finder's sidebar with the house icon and verify that you are able to write to this folder in the Ownership & Permissions section of the Get Info window, and that it isn't locked; if it is already set this way and you get that error, open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and run the following:
    mkdir ~/.Trash
If you get a message stating that the folder exists, run the following:
    sudo chown $UID ~/.Trash
    chmod u+rwx ~/.Trash
The first command in the second set will prompt you for your administrator password; nothing will appear in the Terminal window while it is being typed. In either case, click on the Finder icon in the Dock with the Control and Option keys pressed, and relaunch it.
